Book Description
Green design is the major architectural movement of our time. Throughout the world architects are producing sustainable buildings in an attempt to preserve the environment and our globe's natural resources. However, current strategies for forming sustainable solutions are typically too general and fail to take advantage of critical geographical, environmental, and cultural factors particular to a specific place. By focusing on the Pacific Northwest, this book provides essential lessons to architects and students on how sustainable architecture can and should be shaped by the unique conditions of a region.
Pacific Northwest regionalism has consistently supported an architecture aimed at environmental needs and priorities. This book illuminates the history of a "green trail" in the work of key architects of the Northwest. It discusses environmental strategies that work in the region, organized according to nature's most basic elements--earth, air, water, and fire--and their underlying principles and forces. The book focuses on technologies, materials, and methods, with a final section that examines thirteen exceptional Northwest buildings in detail and in light of their contributions to sustainable architecture.
Critical case studies by Northwest architects illustrate some of the best environmental design work in North America. Architects in the book include, from Seattle, Mithun Architects and Planners, Jones and Jones Architecture and Landscape Architecture, and the Miller|Hull Partnership; from British Columbia, Peter Busby, Patkau Architects, and Terrence Williams; and from Portland, Allied Works. These projects include innovative design in water and site stewardship, intelligent technologies, passive energy strategies, ecologically sound building materials, and environmentally sensitive energy management systems.

While the many nuances and individual details of fine art may not be something that one can learn solely from a book, some how-to books, like The One-Hour Watercolorist, can really help in getting started. This book provides a valuable source of technical information that can help the paint-shy art lover take a big first step in putting brush to paper. The title may be slightly exaggerated, as many of the paintings take more than an hour, but the point is to show that by breaking down a work into steps, something substantial can be accomplished in a relatively short period.
Author Patrick Seslar uses examples from professional watercolorists to point out practical tips like color combinations, uses for liquid masking tape, and examples of different brush sizes and their respective strokes. There is the assumption that the reader will be somewhat comfortable with his or her drawing skills. For those who are not, Seslar advocates the use of a little technology such as photographs, slides, and opaque projectors as a means to create an image. Throughout the book we are shown watercolors in their various stages, and one can begin to see the dramatic differences that each layer of paint makes. The paintings shown vary in theme from children and animals to close-ups of flowers and fruit to trees and the ocean. Included are brief biographies of the watercolorists whose works are shown as examples throughout the book. --J.P. Cohen

Customer Reviews:
Success from the start with watercolors.......2001-02-24
I have been painting watercolors my entire life, but I picked up this book because of the title. One of the great secrets of watercolor painting is NOT to overwork a painting; hence, one hour (more or less) is enough. If you begin to overwork the painting, you run the risk of ruining it.
This book has no drawing instructions; if you are weak in drawing skills, pick up a drawing course book (they can really help) or use the suggestion in the book to project slides on a wall or to use an opaque projector. If that sounds like "cheating" be comforted that many professional artists use these tools to help, especially when doing large super-realistic paintings. Don't worry that this is "tracing" because the work of putting paint to paper takes skill and practice. It is NOT coloring book work.
This book also gives important advice about paper and paints; this is helpful as using the wrong paper will just frustrate you. In addition it helps to copy some of the exercises in the book and follow the stages of putting the layers of paint on. This again isn't "coloring book" copying; copying work is a very good artistic exercise to learn technique.
In short, if you are starting watercolor, this is an excellent book to try.

Book Description
While many photographs of Indians from the turn of the twentieth century pandered to insensitive stereotypes, those made by Frank A. Rinehart conveyed the dignity and pride of Native peoples. This book features one hundred outstanding images printed from Rinehart's original negatives and also includes 14 essays by modern Native American writers, artists, and educators--some of them descendants of the individuals photographed--reflecting on the place of these images in their heritage. Just as this collection offers today's Native Americans a unique connection to the past, this book offers all readers a positive understanding of continuity and endurance within the American Indian community.

Beyond the Reach of Time and Change: Native American Reflections on the Frank A. Rinehart Photograph Collection features one hundred photographic portraits taken during the very late nineteenth century by professional Frank A. Rinehart. Rinehart practiced his trade upon Native Americans in their traditional dress during the an event known as the Indian Congress; his landmark photography, which unlike that of others did not pander to shameless stereotypes, rests in the Haskell Indian Nations University today and is widely regarded as one of the best photographic documentaries of the era. In addition to the powerful black-and-white photographs of individuals and groups from a wide variety of native tribes, Beyond the Reach of Time and Change features 14 essays by modern Native American writers, artists and educators - including some descendants of the individuals photographed - offering various reflections upon the role of these timeless images in their heritage. Highly recommended for native studies shelves and personal collections, and an emotional collection to page through.

Book Description
Now, as we near the end of this century, Joe Falls has been a part of baseball for 50 years. His book, "Joe Falls: 50 Years of Sports Writing" recounts his love of baseball as a youth; his breaks as a rookie in the sports writing business from his job with The Associated Press in New York to "The Detroit News; " and his encounters with memorable sports personalities such as Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Jack Nicklaus, Walter Hagen, Gordie Howe, Michael Jordan, and, possibly his favorite, Secretariat. It also reveals his experiences of covering sports in various parts of the world, including seven Olympics, Wimbledon, the British Open and the Goodwill Games in Moscow.

An Outstanding Writer and Nice Man-------.......2007-08-24
I got to know Joe during my days with the Tigers. I kind man, and great writer. This book is telling and real.
Joe Falls Loves Sportswriting.......2004-03-21
Joe Falls has been and still remains one of the best and most knowledgeable writers in the nation.
Most readers find his writing style to be enjoyable and easy to read. He is an excellent teller of stories and has a wonderful sense of humor. He also can be a fierce protector of justice if he believes people are being wronged or mistreated. Falls is blunt and not afraid to tell the truth. He is extraordinarily intelligent and chooses to write in simple terms in order to reach the widest possible audience. What good is writing if no one understands it?
Falls is not perfect. He has made many mistakes, paid dearly, and does his best every day to improve. If you do not like his personal behavior, I suggest you speak with Joe about it before offering your gossip to others. Once you know the facts, you may decide it is better to keep your opinion yourself and leave people's private lives to themselves.
I suggest you enjoy Mr. Falls' writing and talent and leave gossip out of it.
I thought he was dead already.......2003-12-17
Don't give this pathetic loser any encouragement. After reading his columns occasionally for a few years, I finally gave up on this guy and realized he's an incredibly sad man, an unapologetic sycophant for anything with blue in it, and a total waste of time to continue to give the benefit of the doubt to.
If you like to read about how he thinks it's just so wonderful to enjoy a vanilla ice cream cone on a Sunday afternoon (coming from an alleged sportswriter?), you'll love this book. Otherwise don't waste your money. Give it to something even more deserving of your charity.
More Banality from an expert.......2003-12-13
Joe Falls not only doesn't know the difference between a slider and curve, he doesn't know the difference between a prostitute and an undercover cop. Joe was picked up for soliciting in the 1970s, but since he bleeds University of Michigan Maize and Blue, that fact gets overlooked when inducting him into various writing hall of fames. The only thing this book maybe useful for is to line the bottom of a birdcage.

Book Description
For as long as he could remember, Neil Steinberg had heard his father Bob talk obsessively about his season at sea in the mid-1950s as radio operator aboard the Empire State, the gleaming training ship of the New York State Maritime College. The rocky crossing from New York harbor to Bermuda, and then on to Spain, Greece, and France; the run-ins with drunken shipmates; the shock of death at sea–Neil knew it all by heart. Now, forty-five years later, Bob and Neil, father and son, are set to embark on that same voyage together aboard the Empire State II.
And Neil is scared as hell. Scared of shipwreck, disaster at sea, terror, humiliation, and his father. But scared, above all, of the prospect of a month at sea with a man he has never understood.
In Don’t Give Up the Ship, Neil Steinberg has written a courageous, gripping, and honest memoir of an unforgettable voyage–and an unbelievably fraught relationship. This is not a hugs-and-high-fives tale scripted by Hollywood. In fact, these two men have never spent three days together without an explosion. But underneath the bitterness and disappointment, there has always been something deeper, a bond neither could ever talk about or name. To Neil, facing down the demons of middle age, this trip is his best chance, maybe his only chance, to find the father he never knew and be the son he was never able to be.
A dual memoir about their lives together and apart, Don’t Give Up the Ship helps Neil to finally understand what his dad went through nearly half a century ago as a handsome nineteen year old kid living in the Bronx of the 1940s, in flight from his own oppressive father, in search of adventure, determined to see the world, fall in love, and make something of himself.
Steinberg is too truthful a writer for the easy epiphany or the pat reconciliation. But at the end, after the landing in Naples and the quick overland trip through Italy, father and son do arrive at an understanding that changes both their lives. Don’t Give Up the Ship is not only a ripping good story of men and the sea, it is also a brave, frank, and unflinchingly real exploration of the nature of family love and the possibility of adventure.
Customer Reviews:
Don't Give Up the Ship: Finding My Father While Lost at Sea.......2002-05-17
Mr Steinberg wrote an interesting little true tale. I especially enjoyed two sections of the book. The first section being the look into his father's past. It was well placed in the middle of the book. Until that time the only view given was of the present. I enjoy seeing how a person changes from a brave, young man to a fear-driven, elderly man. The other part I enjoyed was the dialogue between father and son. It is interested to see how they relate to each other. Some of the book is a bit slow. I found the descriptions about the boat alittle too detailed. I know there will be people who absolutely love boats and they will disagree with me. Overall story is interesting and well written.
A good read for good readers.......2002-05-11
Neil Steinberg's "Don't Give Up the Ship" is a good read, but not an easy one. If you are looking for a book which revels in syrupy emotionalism and demands little from the reader, then this is not the book. But, if you want an open and honest accounting of of an emotional journey, then this is your book. As usual for Steinberg, the book uses clear language to make its points. This isn't one of those books where you aren't sure what the author was trying to say. What I valued in the book was how Steinberg reflected on his relationship with his Dad and came away knowing more not just about himself, but also about life in general. The story about Steinberg and his father retracing his Dad's journey to Europe on a ship is far more than a travelogue. It's a journey into better understanding the human condition. Well worth reading!

Re-publish this Book! .......2005-12-16
This was an amazing book, one of my favorites by a good deal.
It tells the story of the USS Washington, from birth till victory in WWII (which effectively ended its life. In a real tragedy what's left of the Washington is probably razor blades and paper clips right now . . .)
The perspective is from the men who served on board her, but it does not follow any specific group, it weaves together different crewmembers experience into a composite of what the ship went through. You get an appreciation of what daily life must have been from the lowest ranks to the O-10 Admirals on board during the war. The writing enables this because it is so absorbing, detailed, and fluid.
The USS Washington was in a bit of an odd place historically. It was a battleship in what would prove to be a carrier war, so its prestige status in the fleet was cut short of its designers aspirations as soon as its brethren were settling on the silt in Pearl Harbor. Its technical prestige status would later be eclipsed by the Iowa class battleships, the largest U.S. and widely considered to be the most supreme battleships ever built, likely able to best even the Yamato and Musashi thanks to radar fire control and some other innovative design features. Yet despite this position it would be the USS Washington that would be the battleship to do the most to win the war.
The story follows the ship starting with its shakedown cruise, where you can see just how many teething problems a ship as large as 45,000 ton war wagon will inevitably have, especially considering the level of engineering analyses available to her designers at the time. Training then proceeded to the heat of the Caribbean, complete with Monkey stow-aways. After Pearl the USS Washington is surprisingly sent to the Northern Atlantic to help the British escort convoys on the Murmansk run. The comparison between the American and British navies was particularly interesting. The American radar control of the main and secondary batteries was essentially two orders of magnitude better than what any other nation had in WWII. The most amazing moment on the Murmansk run is when a British battleship slices in half a British destroyer, and how the fleet reacts. However the USS Washington is never fully committed to battle in the North Seas, much to the frustration of her crew.
The Washington then gets called to the Pacific for the eventual push all the way to Japan, starting with the Solomons. Here the Washington proves her worth, especially in the early naval battles around Guadalcanal where victory was very much in doubt. The most distinguished part of her career, and some of the most white knuckle, page turning reading in the book, is when the Washington and South Dakota go toe-to-toe with the Kirishima and Hiei, two Japanese ships of the line. Washington emerges victorious after sending Kirishima to the bottom. The Washington continues to make her presence known with multiple shore bombardment raids. Later in the war she primarily provides anti-aircraft cover for the Halsey's carriers. In another moment of sheer frustration Washington is flagship of TF 34 which is denied the opportunity to pursue Kurita's center force in the Battle of Leyte, despite Admiral Lee's request to Halsey. Had TF 34 engage Kurita it would have been the type of open ocean battleship to battleship engagement that the Navy had been built around for decades, but which never really came to pass.
Despite the intensity of the battles the book really is about life on board the ship, which could be downright tedious when not in the combat zone. There are plenty of foul-ups, lighthearted moments, and horseplay to shield the reader from any boredom however.
The Washington's collision with the Indiana is another astounding piece of real life history, and again expertly crafted into words by the author.
If anyone has a family member who served in the Navy during WWII, if anyone has ever wondered what it was like inside a ship at war, if anyone has an interest in battlehips or their history this book will be tremendously enjoyable. I only hope that someday it is re-published so that more people can be introduced to the amazing story of the Washington and the men who fought her in the greatest naval war in history.
Battleship at War- the epic story of the USS Washington.......2000-09-27
An excellant book which gives the average individual an insight to one of the most remarkable ships in the US Navy. Covers the history from the ships design to her scrapping. Tells in great detail, yet in a very readable text, the story of the crew, the officers and the ship in World War II.
A great book about the premier American Battleship of WW II.......1999-06-04
Battleship at War catalogs the relatively brief but action packed career of USS Washington, one of the great ships to serve in the Navy during World War Two. Of all the American battleships to serve during the war, Washington had the most distinguished career, serving in both the Atlantic and the Pacific, and sinking the Japanese battleship Kirishima during the Second Naval battle of Guadalcanal. This book righfully takes its place alongside Edward Stafford's "The Big E" (which narrates the career of the carrier Enterprise) as a premier work of the genre. It is incredible to me that both of these great titles are out of print, just as it is incredible to me that the richest country in the world could have failed to preserve these proud ships when other ships with much less distinguished careers survive to this day. Battleship at War is a must read for anybody who is serious about naval history.

Customer Reviews:
To many errors in tables and exemples. Content OK.......1997-12-10
Most text portions are very well structured and the content is appropriate. Important matters to the field are well covered and the list of bibliography at the end of each chapter is very usefull. This book provides a very good understanding of the state of the art in computer aided tolerance analysis. However, there are to many mistakes in the tables and examples. For example, the complete chapter #3 is based on the construction of a tolerance chart. The text, the drawings and the tolerance chart developped do not correspond.
