This was mostly a book discussing what not to do and naturalizing your water feature. This is not a good how-to type book.

5 out of 5 stars So natural, yet man-made !!.......2005-01-22

Keith Davitt takes water features to the next (natural)level with careful scrutiny of stone shapes, colors, sizes, placement. With the same attention to detail, he has an uncanny feel for scale (how large to make the feature given the amount of space there is to work with). I really like the photos that demonstrate his points. The ponds and growth really look like they belong there. Great work!!

5 out of 5 stars on Keith Davitt's book, Water Features for Small Gardens.......2005-01-15

This is a gorgeous book! The pictures (by the author) are luscious, the gardens are inspiring: it does the heart good just to look at them, even if you haven't got a garden, or have one but can't afford to remake it. He doesn't just rate his own gardens, he also commends other well-made water gardens, so the scope is wider than might be expected. The writing is clear, friendly, and concise. Even the book design is inviting and elegant. Very highly recommended for gardeners of all skill levels--and wistful nongardeners, too. I loved it!

5 out of 5 stars A Must.......2005-01-07

Water Features for Small Gardens is a wonderful book.
Most books of this sort show incredible water features only for the very wealthy but this book not only shows beautiful, attainable water features but explains, with photos and diagrams, how to build them. Mr. Davitt includes virtually every type of water feature from tub gardens to streams and shows a wide range of styles, many of his own creations and many from other designers. For anyone wanting a comprehensive,
beautifully illustrated book on water features, this is a must.

3 out of 5 stars Warning.......2007-08-04

This is a good book for those who want to paint watercolour copies of photographs. Unfortunately, Mr Toogood doesn't show that part of his working method involved in tracing the photographs he copies. If you're looking for more expressive styles, study the work of Winslow Homer or John Singer Sargent. If you want a good instructional book on watercolour, check out Mastering Atmosphere and Mood in Watercolor by Joseph Zbukvic.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible, Mr. Toogood!.......2007-03-27

Initially I bought this book for its beautiful and inspiring watercolors. Is there nothing this man can't paint? Breathtaking clouds, the wettest water I've ever seen in paint. You wouldn't know it from the cover, but the book also contains a chapter on portrait painting, step by step. He is as proficient in portrait painting as he is in landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes. I teach a "portraits in watercolor" class and I recommend this book to every student of the medium who is searching for an artist they can admire, who is willing to part with his "secrets".

5 out of 5 stars Great Art, Great Instruction.......2007-01-25

There are watercolor books with great artwork, and then there are watercolor books with great instruction. This book combines both. Toogood's realistic style is gorgeous. His instructions are very clear and concise. I am a professional artist and own over a hundred books on painting, yet I was able to learn get quite a few tips from this author--expecially about painting water. An alltogether excellent book.

3 out of 5 stars Incredible Light and Color in Water Color.......2006-08-22

This was not what I was looking for in watercolor books. I did not like the realism that he taught, but it may well be that for those looking for intense realism this may be a good book.

5 out of 5 stars Had to own this one!.......2005-10-03

I checked this book out from my local library 3 times. When my husband saw it sitting on my table again he said, "Why don't you just buy it for yourself." I did. James Toogood has an incredible way of using watercolor to portray texture. His examples are clear and easy to follow. His paintings which are reprinted in the book are marvelously detailed and clear. I also recommend getting his demo DVD in which he shows several of the paintings in the book step-by-step. I learned so much from him.

Book Description

For more than 20 years, the books of photographer Charlie Waite have enthralled lovers of landscape photography everywhere. Now, in a very special collection, he has tried something new; the first volume devoted solely to his black and white images--more than 50 breathtaking plates--many never before published. In the great tradition of Edward Weston and Ansel Adams, he finds in black-and-white a perfect vehicle for revealing his creative voice. These photographs are rich in reflective surfaces, filled with texture, luminosity, and mystery; they capture the subtle shades of desert sand and sky as camels trek through; the vivid personalities of three old men sitting side-by-side in Lijiang, China; the twisted beauty of an unusually shaped tree in Lombardy. Amateur photographers will particularly appreciate the plate index with information on the camera used, the lens, film, exposure, and filter.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great photos from a master.......2007-07-26

Charlie Waite's black and white photographs are every bit as good as his colour work. I particularly appreciate his infrared work shown in this book. Although I am a digital photographer now and this book features only film based pictures, it is very educational just to look and absorb Charlie Waite's images. Well worth the price. Highly recommended (by me!)

1 out of 5 stars Design Is Not A Subject.......2004-03-18

In the nicest possible way, it is difficult to argue with successful published photographers who lead classes to exotic destinations, but let me try. Into every camera, besides film or flash card, is loaded the aesthetics of the medium. Each release of the shutter a photographer tests their knowledge of it and against what they see "In Their Minds Eye." The first part of seeing with "The Mind's Eye" is choosing a subject to photograph and then coaxing design to help organize the image. Mr. Waite's travel snapshots of the world fall below this threshold. The SUBJECT takes a back seat to DESIGN. A few of the images, like the terra cotta face with water pipe at the mouth, page 101, is not worth film, paper or ink. Many of Mr. Waite's images are bad forgeries of SUBJECTS other photographers' have done with greater care and ability. Mr. Waite's travels took him to America and his subject was the jaws of an earth mover and rock. If he could have spent a few of his travel days moving through the "Grand Circle" in the Southwestern Landscape of America, he would not of included so many cliché photographs of Tuscany. When I buy a book, what I am thinking about is to revisit it, and feel the same way about the photographer's efforts as when I purchased it. For Mr. Waite's book "In My Mind's Eye, Seeing In Black & White", this purchase was returned for the lack of the latter. Craig Carlson, Chula Vista, California, carlson1@mail.sdsu.edu.

3 out of 5 stars Ah, the low-brow memories..........2004-04-03

Being both a fan of the Beavis and Butt-Head show and a comic-book nut back in the day, it was pretty much a given that I'd start collecting the Marvel comic series based on the show when it first came out... which I did of course. I snapped up all of the issues that Marvel printed (including issues 1 through 4, which are collected in this particular TPB), and enjoyed every single low-rent yuk and juvenile antic of this not-so-dynamic duo as they had fun making the Maxi-Mart clerk go postal, hit the tattoo parlor, tried their moves out at a local mud wrestling match against a couple of hideously overdeveloped ladies, and took a walk down to the local funeral parlor in the hopes of seeing a zombie.

I was surprised by how well writer Mike Lackey translated the show's brand of humor from the boob tube to the four-color medium; there was more than enough of the usual dumb double-entendre and "Huh-Huh, you said..." shenanigans to keep just about any Butt-Phile reasonably entertained. And their hilarious music video reviews from the TV show were adapted into occasionally funny critiques of such Marvel Comics heroes as The Punisher™, Wolverine™, Spider-Man™, and... Devil Dinosaur®?! Artist Rick Parker, known among Marvelites for his creative lettering and silly cartoon art, did pretty dead-on renderings of the title characters and the supporting cast (i.e. Stewart, Principal McVicker, Tom Anderson, Stewart, Daria, etc.) as they looked on the show. Also thrown in for kicks were several activity pages featuring various subversive pranks, gags, and very wrong arts `n' crafts any aspiring teenage miscreant could have fun with to while away those long stretches of boredom.

Sadly, after picking this TPB up again recently and reading it for the first time in many years, I found the humor to be, for the most part, less than entertaining. A lot of the so-called "yuks" tended to be more dumb than they were funny, as well as gratingly repetitive. On the upside, there were a few bits here `n' there that still gave me a good guffaw, but overall these comics aren't not quite as hilarious as I remembered `em being the first time `round. Guess I'll hafta stick with the TV show for the big laughs...

Book Description

"What has happened to me over the course of the past seven decades has in one way or another happened to many if not all present-day American women -- from the almost dizzyingly rapid ringing of changes to the discovery of that in our lives which is never changing."

One of the nation's most renowned female conservatives, Midge Decter is known for her frequently controversial stands on modern social issues. An Old Wife's Tale is her thoughtful examination of the lives of American women and men over the last sixty years, as viewed through the lens of her own life. From stories of her youth during World War II -- when Decter and her friends learned that "only the class beauty and the class tramp had no difficulty with the dating system" -- to a surprising and often hilarious picture of what the 1950s were really like to an account of her later roles as a single mother, publishing executive, happily married woman, political iconoclast, and doting grandmother, Decter paints a singular portrait of a life lived on the front lines of American culture.

By turns serious, wry, and deeply personal, An Old Wife's Tale brings us an important new perspective on twentieth-century American life.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Freaking Brilliant...........2004-04-07

Midge Decter may be the most eloquent female "Don Giovanni" since the Wife of Bath! Incredible stuff -- particularly her long (and sometimes painfully clinical) study of the clitoral orgasm.

Decter may no longer consider herself a feminist, but her book is positively jam-packed with what Simone de Beauvoir called the "joie de Tel Aviv."

1 out of 5 stars How saddening.......2003-11-01

The perpetuation of women's subjugation by their own members is one of the saddest chapters in the millenia-long history of women's struggle for equality. I see it in my own grandmother's attitude toward my mother: a bitterness bordering on rage. How dare my mother pursue a successful career outside the home? I have not suffered because of it. Children have only to gain from the success of mothers outside the home, for it only increases their respect for their mothers in this increasingly economically-driven society to see the mom contribute tangibly to the economic life of the family. (This, of course, is not to say that the mothers who do stay home do not contribute economically to their families; rather, they support in intangible ways.)

It makes me sad to see the complete internalization of subjugation by Ms. Decter.

1 out of 5 stars Not a well-written memoir.......2003-01-10

Midge Decter was a publishing executive, the executive editor of Harper's, a single mom in New York, studied at the Jewish Theological Center, and held a variety of other postions and roles, and yet fails to paint a portrait of any of the places or people she has encountered. I bought this book because it was described as a "Memoir," but it should be classified as an Essay instead. She spends plenty of time discussing her views on life, but none describing the colorful characters she has met and worked with, or the personal experiences that led to her political views. As a fan of autobiographies, I was dissappointed, and would suggest this book only to those who are interested in reading an essay about extremely conservative values and extremely traditional roles for women.

5 out of 5 stars I have waited decades to read what she wrote........2003-01-03

I am of the same generation as Decter. She followed the lives of women chronologically during the past about fifty years up to the present. Her observations are exactly correct. It is very obvious how and why the lives of many of the younger women today are confused and in turmoil as a direct result of the feminist movement. We older gals are thankful that we were not and are not a part of the victimization imposed upon women the past thirty or so years. We like and love ourselves, our families and friends, and our men.

4 out of 5 stars Claims to be Everywoman.......2002-09-04

I was initially put off by Decter's claim that she is a sort of Everywoman of the past 30 or so years. But I was surprised at how true it turned out to be. Her comments on most women's inner fears over the sexual revolution and the prospect of life without "a man" jived completely with my memories of the period. Her descriptions of the political climates of recent presidencies were also right on target.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Foods That Fight Disease.......2001-02-05

Feed your mind to improve your health with a great new book by Registered Dietitian Laurie Deutsch Mozian. Her book, Foods That Fight Disease, conveys a positive message about taking charge of your health through the foods you eat.

Intended for both consumers and health experts, Mozian takes very technical research and makes it understandable. Because of the nature of the information, expect technical discussions and scientific terms. Luckily, most detailed explanations are followed by easy to understand analogies, like where free radicals are described as "...roving gangs of thug molecules, looking to start trouble in the cell...".

Making it easier to read and use, the book is divided into three parts. The sum of the parts yields an understanding of what phytochemicals are, what they do, where to find them and recipes for turning nutrient rich foods into meals.

The first section gives background on phytochemicals, which are naturally occurring food components that my have health-promoting potential.

Part two suggests how nutrient rich foods are used in treatment and hopefully, prevention of specific diseases. Included are discussions of cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and menopause (not an illness, but certainly a condition in which alleviating symptoms is desirable), just to name a few.

The third part is dedicated to phytochemical-rich recipes. Each recipe has comments and nutrition information. Practical dishes like apple crisp and tamale pie incorporate one or two nutritional powerhouses, thereby making them more appealing to skeptical eaters.

Mozian's nutrition expertise (she has a Master's degree in nutrition and food science, and is a Registered Dietitian) is evident throughout. In this book you'll find what most health-conscience people want - discussions of basic foods to eat for better health, complete with menus, recipes, serving suggestions and calorie estimates.

This book falls into the small category of `excellent diet and nutrition books' available.

        Book Description

Based on a vast range of primary sources from Europe and India, this thorough study explores the wider geo-political, cultural and institutional context of the Mughal military. It also details practical and technological aspects of combat, such as gunpowder technologies and the animals used in battle. It's comparative analysis throws new light on much-contested theories of gunpowder empires and the spread of the military revolution.

4 out of 5 stars excellent survey of Mughal military establishment.......2006-12-20

This book provides a good description of the Mughal military and its role in the development and maintenance of the Mughal state. The only drawback is that, like all Routledge titles, it is quite expensive. Routledge caters to large academic libraries and has relatively short print runs. I wonder whether the other reviewer of this work has read it, since he refers to it as a novel.

        1 out of 5 stars Poorly Written.......2006-10-18

It's more like a mind teaser than a novel. You're constantly rereading previous chapter's so that you can understand a thimble size of information. 1 Star is being generous.

          Book Description

This comprehensive introduction to the study of war and genocide presents a disturbing case that the potential for slaughter is deeply rooted in the political, economic, social and ideological relations of the modern world. Most accounts of war and genocide treat them as separate phenomena. This book thoroughly examines the links between these two most inhuman of human activities. It shows that the generally legitimate business of war and the monstrous crime of genocide are closely related. This is not just because genocide usually occurs in the midst of war, but because genocide is a form of war directed against civilian populations. The book shows how fine the line has been, in modern history, between lsquo;degenerate warrsquo; involving the mass destruction of civilian populations, and lsquo;genocidersquo;, the deliberate destruction of civilian groups as such. Written by one of the foremost sociological writers on war, War and Genocide has four main features: middot; an original argument about the meaning and causes of mass killing in the modern world; middot; a guide to the main intellectual resources ndash; military, political and social theories ndash; necessary to understand war and genocide; middot; summaries of the main historical episodes of slaughter, from the trenches of the First World War to the Nazi Holocaust and the killing fields of Cambodia, Bosnia and Rwanda; middot; practical guides to further reading, courses and websites. This book examines war and genocide together with their opposites, peace and justice. It looks at them from the standpoint of victims as well as perpetrators. It is an important book for anyone wanting to understand ndash; and overcome ndash; the continuing salience of destructive forces in modern society.

3 out of 5 stars War and Genocide is a gender biased read.......2005-04-12

Martin Shaw , according to the previous reviewer - "(rightly) dismisses psychological and sociological explanations about why one group commits genocide over another". In doing so, his study has become majorly flawed when it comes to women, and sexual minorities. Shaw discards "feminist interpretations" of rape during war time, adding that "more men are killed then women", where the real 'gendricide' to war can be noted. From the experience of Albania to all war, women are raped "to humilitate menfolk", according to Shaw. This does strike a note of 'psychological explanation' but is the only one that Shaw takes into account. Homosexuals murdered by the Nazi's are briefly mentioned as well as heterosexual women, lesbians and gays serving in the military. Shaw's minority and gender "asides" are conspicuous in what they say as well as don't say. As such, read against the grain of this recent study.

Other generalizations: Sweden is referred to as an 'international' peace culture' because Shaw has adoped the myth of 'war time neutrality' here without the benefit of new research. "Left wing journalists" are presented in quotation marks to disclaim them as a group. Shaw's bias against feminism is notable. His study is an example of how 'gender studies' exclude from scrutiny notable differences between men and women. His study is also framed within a fairly heteronormative perspective.

Minority and gender representation, which Shaw eliminates in his theory of 'total war' turn out to be the areas where his study falls short. Had he spent some time in illuminating these areas then dismissing or trivializing them, his study might be a better read. Since Shaw has discarded them, the study is biased in its attempts to free itself from psychological profile - at the expense of women and minorities.

5 out of 5 stars An explanation of Genocide that makes sense.......2004-08-04

After a genocide occurs, people always ask, "How could this happen?" Martin Shaw provides an answer that is simple, insightful and chilling.

Martin Shaw's premise is that war has devolved from "total war" where the entire state (both soldiers and civilians) are at war against an enemy to "degenerative war" where both soldiers and innocent civilians of the enemy state are treated as compatants to "genocide" where innocent civilians are perceived as the enemy and treated as combatants. It is no coincidence that genocide and war go hand-in-hand. The Holocaust, the Khmer Rouge killing fields, East Timor, Bosnia, Rwanda, Darfur... all of these atrocities occured in the midst of war. Even in Stalin's purges and Mao's "Cultural Revolution" and "Great Leap Forward" the pretext for mass-killing was a kind of civil war against perceived enemies of the state.

Shaw (rightly) dismisses psychological and sociological explanations about why one group commits genocide over another. (i.e., there was something deep in the German psyche that caused the Holocaust) Instead he treats genocide as a natural by-product of autocratic states that produce and mobilize machines for mass killing, then turn those machines against a group of unarmed civilians.

The book can be a bit repetitive at times in stating the case, but all-in-all an excellent introduction to the subject of genocide.

            Book Description

Following it's discovery in E.coli by Kundig, Ghosh and Rosema thirty seven years ago, a wealth of information has accumulated on the bacterial Phosphotransferase system (PTS). Since then the PTS has been found in a wide variety of different bacteria where it has been recognised to play a pivotal role in numerious aspects of bacterial cellular physiology. While the primary functions of this system involve sugar reception, transport and phosphorylation, the secondary functions include the regulation, both directly and indirectly, of important metabolic pathways. In this book, Internationally recognised authors review the current research on the PTS, discuss the multifaceted structural and functional aspects of the system and attempt to provide a realistic forecast of future discoveries. Study of this important system will contribute to our understanding of prokaryotic physiology and pathogenesis, will allow major advances in biotechnology, and will result in the development of agents capable of effectively combating harmful microorganisms.
