Inspiring.......2002-12-29
This is one of my favorite books. It is not for a beginner. I do a lot of sawdust firing and find this book so inspiring and helpful. If you have some instruction on this firing technique and have an understanding of different clay bodies, this book will enable you to continue to experimenting and improving your results.
somewhat helpful.......2002-06-24
I was disappointed in this book. I was hoping to find detailed information on firing techniques other than traditional kiln. It did provide this information; however, no detailed information was provided on how to use/position tin to preserve glazing...this was the essential information I was looking for and thought the book would give detailed instructions on how to do this. The book did give good information on a variety of techniques used by potters all over the world, and it was very interesting...but not the "how to" I was hoping for. There was information on building outdoor kilns...and how to fire, which would be helpful to more experienced potters. Not exactly a book for beginners, like me.
More How-Do Than How-To.......2001-05-29
"Sawdust Firing," through interviews with potters, sets forth how those potters do, rather than stepping through how-to's. This is NOT a book for beginners, except to give a taste of the medium. Brilliant photos of potters' works, 'though mostly UK potters and the editor's own, with a spattering from other countries. The vocabulary is distinctly UK-based, with some terms explained in the glossary. For a US reader, "ceramic fibre" may not instantly translate to "fiberglass," and "bin" to "garbage can." Having said all this, the book is worth the money just for the glimpses of Duncan Ross' work.
Unglazed pottery made accessible.......2000-05-31
This text is a great reference for the potter beginning to work with unglazed firing techinques, and for the experienced potter seeking new ideas. There are slip recipes, definition explanations, and interviews with contemporary working artists. Beautiful photos intersperrsed throughout the text, both color and black and white, illustrate a number of technique results. A variety of kiln assemblies are described, including pit fire kilns and above ground models. Sawdust Firing is an interesting, easy read packed with information and a number of artist's personal preferences regarding their techniques. I highly recommend it to any individual curious about the art - this book makes unglazed firing very accessible, even to beginners.

Description:
This paper summarizes the results of an experimental study on combustion of three distinct biomass fuels (sawdust, rice husk and pre-dried sugar cane bagasse) in a single fluidized-bed combustor (FBC) with a conical bed using silica sand as the inert bed material. Temperature, CO, NO and O"2 concentrations along the combustor height as well as in flue (stack) gas were measured in the experimental tests. The effects of fuel properties and operating conditions (load and excess air) on these variables were investigated. Both CO and NO axial profiles were found to have a maximum whose location divides conventionally the combustor volume into formation (lower) and reduction (upper) regions for these pollutants. Based on CO emission and unburned carbon content in fly ash, the combustion efficiency of the conical FBC was quantified for the selected biomass fuels fired under different operating conditions.

Description:
In the ceramic industry, burning of pore-forming agents in clay materials during firing leads to the emission of pollutant volatile organic compounds (VOC). Afterburning of such kinds of organics in a separate carbonization chamber for tunnel kilns is a possible solution for their further transformation into non-polluting species (H"2O, CO"2, ...). However, this requires important investments to be made in relation to major kiln modifications. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an alternative method of organic conversion through the addition of oxidizing agents such as peroxide and dioxide in the raw materials.

Gives you great idea's and creativity.......2003-11-10
I will keep it short. The book has a basic foundationu kodak l for photoshop and other image editing software. The information in this book is the equivalent of ten Imaging books in one. The benefit that can be derived from this book is that it shows what alotof the filters do. I masterd it and then had my pictures printed At Kellards Photo(www.kellards.com)and got beautiful Kodak prints for only .29 cents.
Get creative with your digital camera.......2002-08-04
This book showed me how I could use Photoshop to manipulate my digital photographs to remove errors, enhance quality, and make creative composites.
Photoshop was hard for me to learn and this book's examples helped me get over the threshold. I used Jim's techniques and found that I really could do "digital darkroom" fixes. I cut a butterfly from an uninteresting background, pasted it onto a palmetto frond, and made my first "realistic" composite. Then I increased the color saturation and it's a knockout image! I printed an 8x10 and even my wife thinks it looks great.
From the book's examples, I can see there are lots of other ways to improve photographs. Now that I have passed the Photoshop threshold, I plan to experiment to see what works best for me. I'm also going to be taking new kinds of photographs, such as "background" shots, that I wouldn't have considered before.
The book also has sections on creative photography, to make composite images that are surrealistic. Examples show how to turn a normal photograph into what looks like a painting, or combine multiple photographs to create an imaginary scene. Some of the results are beautiful, such as the mosaic portrait on page 113. I plan to play with these ideas and incorporate some into my personal style.
Other books I have looked at try to explain the functions of Photoshop. This book showed me how to use Photoshop in very specific ways to improve my photographs. It made it easy for me to get started. The examples showed why I might want to use a certain Photoshop function and how to do it.
When I started digital photography it amazed me, first because it was so fast and then because the printouts were of such high quality. Now I can see a whole new creative possibility in my hobby.
Great book!
A great idea book to explore what Photoshop can do.......2002-04-01
As someone who has worked with Photoshop a bit, I found the techniques the author uses to be a good idea starter for my own work. The book has a number of beautiful photos and is fun to flip through.
There are plenty of other manuals out there if you want to learn the basics of Photoshop. This will not do that. What it can do, and what it did for me, is help you develop a keener eye for recognizing the possibilities in image enhancement--how to realistically insert subjects between background and foreground, outline delicate items like whiskers, and merge subjects that have different perspectives.
It also shows work in other software programs like Kai's Power Tools, Color Efex Pro and Knockout.
Please back away from this photoshop book.......2002-03-13
I will keep it short. The book lacks a basic foundation for photoshop or any other image editing software. The information in this book is the equivalent of jacking around with photoshop for two hours. The only benefit that can be derived from this book is that it shows what about 12 of the filters do, However, The Photoshop Handbook breaks down every single filter, brush and effect and it only costs about four dollars...

Fascinating History in a Hurry.......2002-07-18
Just an incredible read. Gertrude Stein's advice to writers is worth the price of the book. You also get Hitler, Stalin, Scott Fitzgerald, Mae West, Arthur Miller -- etc. The interviews are from four to 15 pages long and all written by different people. Some appeared in newspapers first. You can easily pick this book up and read a little, and then pick it up again in a week or two, or keep it as a reference.
A journalistic chocolate box.......1997-09-28
This book is a journalistic chocolate box for the general reader. For journalists, it is a landmark study of the evolution of one of the key techniques of the profession. As such, it should have a place on the syllabus of every journalism school.

Lonely Planet South America on a Shoestring
ASIN: 1931160104 |
Book Description
With little more than backpacks and desire for adventure, Mark Mann and two friends set out on an expedition through Ecuador, Bolivia, and Colombia, submerging themselves in Latin culture. Through dense forests, daunting mountains, and pristine beaches, the trio makes its way — in a drug-induced haze. Soon the drugs become an all-consuming addiction that changes the lives of Mann and his friends forever. This is an engaging travelogue and frank memoir evokes the magical realism of South American literature. “Darkly comic, ultimately shocking, and packed with astute observations.” — Geographical

not for adults.......2007-04-17
The gringo trail is a list of bus stops along the Andes spliced between political diatribes lifted from books by Marxist academics. Little in this book is original. The author deplores Latin American cities and exalts the countryside. Both are extraordinary and deserve positive attention. Quito, is a very romantic city with an extraordinary history. The cities of Colombia are each unique and phenomenal but receive little attention from the author. Instead, the author focuses on the religious experience of South American drugs and the poverty of the indigenous community. Mann has little positive to say about the Latino community and culture. Instead, Mann wears the hair shirt of academics who would rather criticize what they see than see the positive. The climax of this book, which is a very real loss, is lost in a last minute explanation of what the author learned about nature. The philosophy of western culture sucks and nature is cool comes off as juvenile and myopic. If your looking for simple answers to Latin American issues according to a recent college graduate mixed with uninspired drama, this book might appeal to you. All in all, this book has very little in the way of insightful observations and is mostly pessimistic. This book strives to be political travel writing but fails at both aspirations.

An interesting read, especially if you love traveling.......2005-08-08
While the book did read much like a travel diary at points, it was very insightfull and introspective. It really gave me the feel of extended traveling around South America.
Not something you'll find at Lunpolly.......2005-04-27
Those of you who have the vaguest interest in travel and are keen to stray further adrift than the resorts of Costa del Sol will find that this book seriously inflames such ambitions. It would not surprise me if this book were the sole cause of the 'grown up gapers' trend that's apparently sweeping the nation.
From start to finish the sheer scope and breadth of historical content is staggering. Not only is such content woven into the narrative in discrete snippets, but entire sections of chapters are dedicated to revealing the astonishing tale of the conquest that shaped South America centuries ago. It is a common belief that genocide has not been committed on a greater scale in recent times than in Auschwitz at the hands of the Nazi's. This belief is actually a myth as the book tactfully points out.
The book is a vast oasis of vibrant escapism that temporarily blots out the dull realities of your 9 - 5 office job but at the same time is ordinary enough in its approach that it implies that such an experience is within everyone's reach. Fuelled by a style that incorporates dry wit and gentle drug humour, the book gnaws its way through a landscape of polar opposites in which the troublesome trio are frequently hindered by unpredictability and their own quirky incompatibility, which eventually turns to solidity and comradeship.
The theme of freedom runs throughout the book and is strongly embodied within Mark's flamboyant expressionism and Melissa's humble soulfulness. Traits used to contrast against a background of poverty and hidden racism. A truth which the conquest did little to change.
A must read for any budding anthropologist and a should - read for any self respecting literate human.
'ey gringo, is no' so bad man!!!!.......2004-06-16
For those of you who like your travel experiences to be wild and exciting, 'The Gringo Trail' has to be worth a read. Mark Mann cleverly strings together his experiences of travelling in Latin America, with astute cultural observations and hair raising experiences. From hold ups on public transport, to drug fuelled mayhem and Shamanism, Mann gorges himself on all the diversity that South america has to offer. An enjoyable read, sure to be exchanged on the travelling circuit for many years to come!!!

Book Description
The voices of three women convey the dilemmas faced by many young families in the armed services.
Download Description
Military manpower policy is often crafted by policymakers without an in-depth understanding of the life experiences and views of junior enlisted personnel. It is plausible to expect that some policymakers attribute the attitudes and experiences of these young soldiers to such features as youth or lack of an advanced education and may thus believethemselves able to empathize with this population group by recalling their own parallel life experiences. However, this approach oversimplifies the life experiences of these families and neglects the reality that most policymakers and professional managers have never experienced the compendium of problems these couples face, such as youth, lack ofeducation, financial difficulties, emotional and physical distance from extended family, and invisibility in a large bureaucracy. At the center of this book are the personal stories of three junior enlisted spouses, told in their own voices and selected to emphasize the dilemmas numerous enlisted families face. The stories provide insight into the experiencesand attitudes of other junior enlisted families. Those interested or involved in the military, or those who live a military lifestyle--at any pay grade--will find these stories both useful and engaging.
Customer Reviews:
Face the facts: This book isn't a fairy tale.......2007-09-28
After reading the other various opinions on this book, I have to disagree with the majority of reviewers. As an enlisted member of the military, I feel that I can support myself more than sufficiently. Money, even though I wish I had more, is never really a problem. However, I only support myself. I don't have 3 + mouths to feed, and I have risen to a comfortable pay scale.
Anyone who knows what Army life is like can empathize with this book. We have all seen E-1's and E-2's that are under 21 years old, married, and with multiple children. Many army bases are located in depressed areas, and work can be difficult to find if one is undeducated or has health issues. Just because you can't see it happening to you, doesnt mean it doesnt happen to someone.
I've had coworkers who were on WIC before, and truly seen people struggle to put food on the table. This is definately not the norm, but it is a situation that needs constant attention. Support systems do fail sometimes, and other times people just don't want to ask for help. It is the responsibility of senior officers and leaders to prevent this book from "coming true".
Common ground.......2004-06-23
I found this book enlightening. I understand what the author's purpose was: not to show an "average" junior enlisted spouse, but a broad range of experiences by these women. It was not to disparage, but to inform military, community and political leaders about some of the hardships these families often face. As the daughter of one Army officer, the wife of another, involved as I am in the Army community, I find this book helpful in giving me ideas on how to approach the junior enlisted spouses. Also, I found a lot of common ground with these women, although my Army and life experiences have been very different. Even though I don't have financial difficulties, I have a Masters degree and have actively sought out classes and help when needed, I too have felt vastly overwhelmed by the Army lifestyle, the experiences of being a new mom, dealing with separations from my husband, and running up against the bureaucracy. I believe this book can allow the leadership to understand the issues better and call attention to similarities between all Army spouses.
How Offensive can you get?.......2003-04-22
It is apparent that Ms. Harrell didn't do her homework very well. I could have given her a completely different view of military life. I did not marry my husband young, I have a college degree, I hold a job actually making more than my husband (an E-5) and never have I been more offended. The book does nothing to distroy the stereotypes of military wives and is just offensive.
Stirring a hornet's nest.......2002-10-20
I, like some of the other reviewers am an Army wife who has some concerns about Ms. Harrell's work. It seems to me that the Army is bending over backwards to hear the voices all Army families and in fact, they have much more of a voice than Harrell claims. The main problem I have with this book is the fact that Harrell passes it off as being a mere statement of the issues that it is totally unbaised. Not true! She states in several different ways that it is horrible how these women have been forgotten and that serious changes need to be made in how the military deals with families. In reality, the military is sacrificing readiness and the ability to prepare for conflict around the globe to hold the hands of people who do have resources available to them in the military community. I do think some of the points are valid, and raising discussion is always good, but the danger is that people in the upper echelons of the military are paying serious attention to a book that is neither unbaised nor the whole story.
How not to be a military wife.......2002-08-08
I'd like to point out, first of all, that I am an officer's wife. However, I have a much different perspective than that of the author. Apparently, she has known only a handful of enlisted spouses and is not aware of the many resources available in the community where she could have pointed these women toward for help rather than letting them flounder. I've seen enlisted women who went to college and held high paying jobs, I've seen those who were stay at home moms who made ends meet however they could, I've seen those who ran businesses, I've seen those who ran the post's spouses' club, their unit's Family Readiness Group or Red Cross chapters. This is a narrowly focused book, with a microscope on the worst of military life. What's sad is that no information was provided to the public on what help these wives could have found in the military community if they had reached out for help to the appropriate source.
Book Description
Written by a pilot for the non-aviator, Strike Eagle puts the reader inside the cockpit of one of the worldâs most advanced fightersâthe F-15E. It is a human-scale account of men at war.
Customer Reviews:
F-15E in the Gulf.......2006-06-29
Great book hands down. Down and dirty in the weeds. Great story
More about the pilots than the aircraft.......2003-02-14
A great book about F-15E pilots experience in that war. It does not however specifically tell you anything much about how the aircraft performs or how it functioned in the gulf war out side of the pilots personal accounts. If you are interested in pilots war time experience - great. If , like me, you are more interested about the aircraft itself you might want to consider some thing else.
"Cool".......2002-11-03
I have read some books about flight, this is the one make me a "deep" image in my brain in each battle scene it describes. No need to say more, all flight readers or hardcore flight simulation fans can't miss it. One word to say "Cool" :-)
Remedial English.......2001-08-17
As a fan of military flight sims, I looked forward to reading this book in order to enrich my understanding of modern aerial combat with the F-15E. Unfortunately, the author's ponderous, wooden narrative and puerile dialog dampened my initial enthusiasim. Though the book is filled with interesting anecdotes and insights that only a person who was actually there would know, they are squandered since the author's command of English is at the level of a grade schooler. I had to stop after only 2 chapters since I couldn't bear it, it was like being forced to watch Sesame Street. I didn't expect the Great American Novel, but the writing here was absymally poor.
Fantastic insight to the pilots and their missions.......2001-06-08
When I bought this book I expected a fairly dry and technical recounting of the planes' operation in the '91 Arabian Gulf war. While there is much attention to technical details this book spends a lot of time focusing on the people that flew and supported these remarkable aircraft.
If you're a fan of the "Mud Hen" or just interested in what it was really like to fly in Gulf War give this book a look. Well written and entertaining from cover to cover.

very informative.......2006-06-16
Just as informative about the life of the Common Soldierwho served in the Northern ranks as his book The Life of Johnny Reb is of the soldier who apposed him thoughcleary better developed by the author's experience.
Very informative. Very well written.
A must have for anyone interested in the Civil War.
The Classic Study of the Union Soldier.......2004-07-26
Bell Irvin Wiley (1906-1980) enjoyed a distinguished career as a professor at the University of Mississippi and Emory University and as the author or editor of over 20 books on the Civil War. His "The Life of Billy Yank: the Common Soldier of the Union" (1952) is, together with its companion volume "The Life of Johnny Reb, the Common Soldier of the Confederacy (1943), Wiley's best-known work. It presents an outstanding history of the day-to-day life of the soldier in the Union Army.
As Wiley stated in the preface to the book, his focus was "social rather than military". The book offers little of the military history of the various Civil War campaigns and little of the political aspects of the War. Rather, Wiley discusses soldering in the Union Army in all its detail and drudgery. It is an indispensable source for those wishing to understand the Civil War. The book would be of interest as well to reenactors wishing to get inside and recapture life in a Civil War Army.
The book is well-researched and documented. It draws upon the letters and diaries of innumerable Union soldiers, both published and unpublished and on other first-hand accounts. Much of the discussion is anecdotal, but Wiley makes good use of census and statistical data as well. The book is clearly written with an obvious empathy for the life of the Civil War soldier. The book leads the reader beyond its specific subject and encourages reflection of the Civil War, its terrible human cost, and its continuing importance to our country.
Wiley begins with a discussion of the recruitment process into the Union Army following the attack on Fort Sumter. The book gives a good picture of the complex relationship between state militia units, the regular army, the volunteers and the draftees -- the various units that uneasily combined to form the Union army. Bell discusses -- in a subject that continues to fascinate historians -- the motivations of the soldiers who served in the conflict. In particular, he discusses the Emancipation Proclamation and considers the extent to which Emancipation was or became a goal for a large number of Union troops. Wiley sees the many sides of this question, and the issue remains one that is vigorously discussed.
The book describes well the rigors of training and camp life, the diseases and unhealthy living conditions which plagued the army, the boredom and enforced routines, the bad food, temptations to vice, and experience of combat. There is excellent material in the book on the organization of the Union Army. Much of the material in Wiley's study is either presupposed or otherwise not covered in other well-known studies of the military of political history of the War. The book considers the morale and fighting spirit of the men and how it varied with the fortunes of war and with the support of people at home. Again, anticipating more recent studies, Wiley discusses the ambiguous, complicated relationships that developed during the War between the Union troops and their enemies in gray. This relationship, and the instances of fraternization during the midst of a total conflict, presaged the way for reconciliation, at long last, at the conclusion of the conflict. There is a brief discussion in the book of women soldiers who enlisted in the Union army and sometimes managed to avoid detection. This subject too has received much recent attention and it is interesting to see Wiley deal with it in his early account. The book ends with reflections on the way in which the Civil War helped forged the United States into a nation.
This is a study that wears its age well. It will bring the reader face-to-face with the life of the Union soldier during our nation's greatest combat.
Common heroes.......2004-06-28
Bell Irvin Wiley seems to have been the first historian/writer to realize that the Civil War was not just about Lee, Pickett, Grant or Stuart or any of the other guys with stars on their shoulders. The real truth about what happened on those battlefields had to do with the guys in the tattered uniforms and the rotted shoes, trying to fight with defective rifles.
As in his companion book, "The Life of Johnny Reb", "The Life of Billy Yank: The Common Soldier of the Union" is an unflinching look at the constant struggles of a Union soldier. This is a very sobering account, and some of the letters the soldiers wrote home are nothing short of heartbreaking. This is a truly admirable account of men who were more than common soldiers. I believe they were really common heroes.
Excellent.......2003-10-23
The late Bell Wiley had an advantage that many researchers of the Civil War did not have: FIRST HAND ACCOUNTS FROM THE VETERANS THEMSELVES. Starting his research in the 1940's, Wiley was able to interview the aging veterans of the War. You can imagine what was going through these warriors minds as they recalled their past. Wiley also spent countless hours combing through letters, diaries, official documents and other papers to get his facts. Billy Yank tells the story of the Union soldiers as few have been able to capture. It covers more than just what the soldier wore, ate, used, etc. From his reasons for fighting, opinions of Lincoln, emancipation (pro AND con) officers, the Southern people, the topics are well covered. Reenactors of the conflict would benefit from this book. This is a gold mine of information for the "first person" impression. Even Southerners will gain insight into their former foes.
Packed full of information and entertaining to read!.......2002-09-07
Similar to the book, "Life of Johnny Reb", Bell Irvin Wiley has put together the life of being a soldier in the Union army. From muster to homecoming this books covers many subjects. Subjects such as northern soldier views on visiting the South for the first time, civilians, slavery, camp life and more. There was a chapter which covered Union perspective about going into battle and fighting which I found especially interesting. Chapter content is backed by letters from actual soldiers that add important weight to the quality of information in this book. I simply hated to put the book down when I read it as it had some funny situations of soldier life mixed with the hard drama of warfare. This book is a must have for those seeking to understand the Union soldier from many perspectives. It doesn't get into boring battle detail or mention officers at length which I found refreshing for a change. It simply covers just about every aspect of being a Union soldier during the Civil War and should be in everyones' Civil War library! 5 STARS!!

Book Description
