Henry Atterbury Smith's compilation provides an accurate and intriguing reference to the historical development of the modern suburban environment. This book represents a set of ideals aspired to by the Arts and Crafts movement, ideals which should be appreciated and emulated by the architects and builders of the twenty-first century.

If you like old houses, (or at least early 20th Century houses) or you want to get a feel for some of the social history of the period, this is a wonderful book. I think it complements nicely the other house catalog reprints from Dover. While the illustrations and plans are smaller than those in some of the other books such as the Sears 1926 house catalog or the Aladdin built in a day catalog, it does show 500 houses. It also has some interesting articles concerning the state of domestic architecture circa 1925 or so.

5 out of 5 stars A Reference Book for Memory Lane.......2000-07-05

Did you ever find yourself stopping your car to oggle and old brick or stucco bungalow, now a bit run down but free from "modernization"? Ever wonder how they were designed or what kind of floor plan they might have? For the amateur or the professional architect, Henry Atterbury Smith's compilation provides an accurate and intriguing reference to the historical developement of the modern suburban environment. For those of us who enjoy dreaming of one day designing and building our own bungalows, this book is pure delight. The house plans are displayed with the information which would have been available at the time of their initial distribution which can be quite amusing as well as historically informative. This book represents a set of ideals aspired to by the Arts and Crafts movement, ideals which should be appreciated and emulated by the architects and builders of the twenty-first century. Do plan on a long, leisurely perusal of this book if you enjoy history, architecture and craftsmanship as much as I do!

    Product Description

The spry and devilishly creative pin-up elder-statesman Archie Dickens is back with a new compendium of cuties to delight an appreciative public. A contemporary of such artistic greats as Elvgren and Vargas, Mr. Dickens was still kicking into the new millenium, still making naughty portraits of young ladies in various states of undress - all with a sly smile and an innocent demeanor. Each illustration features a delightful damsel doing something perfectly ordinary, but in such an extraordinary way! Dickens makes these girls shine! A real must-have for pin-up fans, and those who look fondly at the vintage age eye candy!

5 out of 5 stars MORE BEAUTIES FROM THE MASTER OF PIN-UP ART.......2005-08-02

Call him the Grandfather or the Godfather of pin-up art...or maybe just call him the best pin-up artist. You could not go wrong with any of these accolades. As his name suggests, Dickens was born in London although I do not know if he is related to his famous namesake author. While Dickens worked as a freelance commercial artist, pin-up art was his first love and it was the onset of World War II that gave Dickens his break as his drawings of sweet, beautiful women would become a hot property to lonely servicemen who were far from home and far from their wives and girlfriends. While Dickens' illustration style is clearly one of classical training it still holds up today and to today's younger artists who are very talented, but most of whom cannot capture that pure innocence of Dickens. Those of us who are fans of his suffered a great loss when he passed away in 2004 at a robust 98 years of age. Thankfully we will always have his prolific volume of work to remember him by.

This is the second volume of Dickens pin-up art from SQP and features 50 previously unpublished works. Dickens illustrated the all-American woman, even if they were not necessarily American. In fact his illustrations of Spanish, Mexican, Dutch, American Indian, and other women were some of his most memorable works, and many are on display in this latest collection. The Dickens woman was a classic beauty. A real woman with real curves that didn't require augmentation, and oh those big, bright, playful eyes! Dickens' use of soft colors accentuates the naughty, sexy, and spicy women he illustrates. This collection features a variety of Dickens women at their lighthearted best, and ready for activities like golf and tennis. There's a lovely witch, a good ol' cowgirl holding a mug of beer, a slave girl, and a gorgeous Veronica Lake-looking blond holding a little kitten. This is truly a marvelous collection of work.

The word legend is tossed around very lightly sometimes, but in the case of Archie Dickens it is not only fitting, but virtually the only word that works. Hats off to SQP for another great collection!

      2 out of 5 stars Vol.26: Not-So-Special "SM" Edition.......2005-08-26

The latest installment of MEATMEN was a bit of a disappointment. No Zack! No Patrick Fillion! And for the first time since Vol.12, no John Blackburn! Oy. Let's see what's left... Highlights:

"NEWCOMER Part Two" and "MOVE YOUR ASSES" by "STEPAN ZUBINSKI" - The follow-up to the stunner from last time features more submissive "training" in a far future world. The 2nd story involves a new guy on a football team. The art looks rushed on these; I'm not sure if less was put into it, or if the reproduction is just seriously "off". I'm wondering what the original art looked like?

"DADDY'S HOME" by "FARRADAY" - light-hearted romp where fantasy meets "true love". As usual, Farraday's writing far outshines the art.

"HAWK: BACK STAIRS" by GREG GARCIA - The biker returns to the house where he "served" 10 years earlier for a reunion and reminisce about the years in between.

"BAWDY BUCCANEERS" by "MIKE" - Pirates are the subject this time, with far more detail in the art than usual.

"GOLDENLOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS" by GERALD DONELAN - a 4-page variation on the fairy tale, plus 7 more of Donelan's light-hearted cartoons.

This book can be ordered direct from A Different Light Bookstore, or direct from Leyland Publications.

3 out of 5 stars Vol.21: Bathhouse Heat, Camp Antics, etc........2001-09-06

As usual, great & terribly amateurish art is presented side-by-side. Which is which may be a matter of personal taste, but I know what I like, and I keep wishing the excellent will one day outnumber the dreadful.

Highlights this volume: John Blackburn's Coley in "Body Heat", wherein the voodoo bi-boy helps a confused husband come to terms with who he really is; "Visitation Rites" by Sean, where leather-clad bikers meet (and "meat") campground guys; "The Sons Of Ramus" by Joe, a dive into Greek mythology with decent art if not very strong visual storytelling; "Link Up" by Kurt Erichsen, a fun story about a computer nerd with some nice cartoony art; and one-page cartoons by Gerard Donelan. Blackburn gets to shine IN COLOR on both front and back covers this time, and in fact the back is possibly my very favorite single illo of Coley I've seen to date. Can you say... "HHHHHOT"??

      Book Description

Based on his own extensive personal interviews with the writer, Santo L. Aricò provides the definitive biography of Oriana Fallaci, a popular and flamboyant Italian journalist, war correspondent, and novelist who, in the public imagination, approaches mythical proportions and who, with every work she produces, creates and re-creates that myth.

Pushing the boundaries of biography, Aricò maps out Fallaci’s personal psychological journey through life, paying particular attention to her ongoing and painstaking attempts to establish her own mythical status. He first examines her formation as a literary journalist, emphasizing the high quality of her writing throughout her career. From there, he concentrates on the way in which Fallaci’s personal image began to emerge in her writings as well as the way in which, through her powerful narratives, she catapulted herself into the public eye as her own main character.

Aricò shows how Fallaci is born and reborn in each work and how with each work she takes on a slightly different shape. She became the heroine of her first novel, and even in her reportage on NASA and her interviews with astronauts, she became the star. She kept the spotlight on herself as a war correspondent in Vietnam. In her articles on Mexico’s suppression of student protests during the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, she starred as a champion of liberty and bitter foe of totalitarianism. Her greatest starring roles, however, came in interviews with such political mammoths as Gandhi, Walesa, and Kissinger. In telling the story of how Fallaci built her own myth, Aricò explains the theory of mythmaking in general, showing how it motivated her writing. He explains how her childhood in Florence laid the foundation for her entire career and how at the start of that career, she often blurred the distinction between journalism and fiction. Drawn to acting—especially in her Hollywood stories—she managed to become the leading lady in all she wrote.

Aricò concludes that Fallaci’s literary, journalistic writings intimately fuse with her theatrics, forming a combination that relentlessly propelled her embellished, edited image before the public eye.

4 out of 5 stars An insightful view into the life a brilliant journalist.......1999-10-01

This unauthorized biography provided a rare view into the unusual life and career of one of the finest journalists of the 20th century. Oriana Fallaci has jealously guarded her own privacy, while making a career out of revealing often unflattering views of the movers and shakers of the 20th century. Oriana Fallaci's take her influence from her anti-fascist, intellectually idealistic upbringing. She worked tirelessly to break out of the limited existence most often reserved to a woman of her era. Her great political interviews and masterpieces like "A Letter to a Child Never Born" and "Inshallah" attest to her incisive, unconventional insight. I always wished to know more about her and now have had the opportunity.

Santo Arico is to be congratulated for finally shedding light on the incredible life journey of the most influential female journalist of our time.

The true story of one mans walk across America. The book weaves the experiences the author encountered in a lite and lively manner, covering everything from romance to history, nature and environmental concerns; to the people and places he met along the way.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this book.......2005-11-24

I think the previous reviewer is rather harsh with this book. My only complaint was that it had some typos. Rogers's plans and goals clearly changed as he made the hike, and rarely do huge-scale plans made long in advance go as planned. I thought it was a great read, and Rogers's stories really inspired me to do more adventuring of my own. He's an inspiration to me, more for his stick-to-it-ness than anything else.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing less than inspiring.......2004-11-28

Who doesn't want to quit their job and go live out a dream? Daniel Rogers proves that it is possible, enjoyable, and above all, inspiring. What a wonderful book. I couldn't put it down!

4 out of 5 stars Hitting The Trail in "Amercia: one Step At A Time".......2004-10-26

There are mornings when the rising sun lights the Texas horizon fiery gold, the air is crisp and pure, and I really wish I was off hiking somewhere. Growing up with a love of the outdoors, hiking was a major part of my life for many years. For a variety of reasons, those days have passed and hiking isn't possible anymore.

But for Dan Rodgers it still is and he did something that many of us wish we had done. Sitting at his desk at Colgate-Palmolive he realized that while he liked his job, it wasn't the answer for him. He wanted to be back on the trail and exploring again. While he appreciated the job and the financial security it gave him, he wanted something more. As many of us have thought and Dan wrote on page 2 of his book....

"It made even less sense to me to live only for the purpose of going to work each day and return home to rest up for another day at the office. I debated the dilemma and decided that while the cost of chasing dreams was very high-the cost being failure, for we will never achieve all we set out to do-the reward was even greater. The reward was life as opposed to mere existence, and I was tired of existing. I wanted to live again. "

With the support of friends, including his soon to be hiking companion Dodger, Dan quit his job, emptied his apartment and took what he wanted to keep to his Mom's in Ohio.

"After months of preparation, the time to walk out the door had finally arrived. I had prepared at length, studying maps and reading everything I could find about the many trails cross America. Six years, forty-eight states and twenty-four thousand miles lay ahead of me. America was waiting." (Page 7)

They head out, moving southeastward and the resulting book chronicles the hiking adventures of Dan with his buddy Dodger as they travel together. Sometimes they travel together and as the trip progresses, various events happen to cause Dan to travel alone or with others as he hikes the trails and roadways of America. As he crosses each state, he explains the local or regional history of the area he hiked as well as his own personal experiences. Part travel guide, part history book, the resulting memoir of an amazing 3400-mile walk recounts a journey that began before the devastating tragedy of September 11, 2004 and ended long after.

As he travels America, state by state, the author shifts from past tense to present tense and back again, often in the same sentence. This, along with the occasional typo and grammar problem, makes for a disconcerting read at times. However, these errors are relatively minor in the scope of the work and can be for the most part ignored as the reader follows his journey affected by missing signage, incorrect maps, weather and bodily injury. Through it all, Dan survives the elements and everything else with his goal in mind.

This is an interesting and enjoyable read about an amazing adventure. In a nation besieged by terror concerns and negative politics, it is nice to read how one man literally gave up the everyday working world to chase his dream. That willingness to do it and for so many folks to support it along the way is a reminder of how great people are despite the constant media reports to the contrary.

4 out of 5 stars If not now, when?.......2004-03-31

If you want to know more about the everyday America, you could do not better than to walk along with Dan Rogers from Ohio through Kentucky & Tennessee, cutting across the corner of Alabama into Mississippi. Turning north to Arkansas & along the border of Oklahoma into the panhandle of Texas & on through New Mexico, Arizona, & finally to the Pacific Ocean.

Rebeccasreads has interviewed Eagle Scout Dan Rogers & recommends AMERICA ONE STEP AT A TIME as a lively adventure of a mostly solitary walk along the back roads of this land, full of history & philosophy, simple humor & rare awe.

        5 out of 5 stars My Wake-Up Call.......2004-02-08

"The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation". When Henry David Thoreau penned these now famous words, he'd never met Daniel Rogers. "America One Step at a Time" is far more than the title implies. A common man undertakes the uncommon task of walking across America. Like most of us, Rogers lived by the alarm clock and on-ramp metering system, living a life of throttled dreams and ambitions. But unlike most of us, he awoke one morning and decided to throw "common-sense" to the wind and pursue his dream. In his alluring book, he gives us a delightful look at the essence of America, its people, its country-sides, and its history. But he tantalizes our latent fires of adventure and discovery. He tells a wonderful tail of adventure while fanning the flames of spiritual rebellion that lies within us all. It's captivating reading and it challenges us to awake to the real world around us and experience it before it's too late. A wonderful book.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to read, easy to do activities.......1999-11-22

The activities outlined in the books are easy to play with young children, sometimes, without any props at all. It inspired me on creating other activities to play with my sons. I strongly recommended this book to any parents who want to build a closer relationship with their children and to help their children to be more creative. This book also indicates the benefits of each activity (help to see things from different perspective).

            Book Description

Maine-born Dr. Sumner “Jack” Jackson joined the British Army as a volunteer physician during World War I. After the Battle of the Somme, he married a beautiful French Red Cross nurse. When the war was over, Jackson joined the staff of the American Hospital in Paris, where he quickly became a favorite physician of such Lost Generation figures as Hemingway and Fitzgerald.

During World War II, Jackson, his wife, and their teenage son joined the French Resistance. They hid and treated wounded Allied flyers and Resistance fighters, used the hospital as a cover for Resistance activities, photographed the German submarine base at Saint-Nazaire, and helped smuggle plans for the V-1 rocket to England. Just before the Americans liberated Paris, however, the family was betrayed to the Gestapo and deported to German concentration camps. The day before the war ended, tragedy struck.

Doctor to the Resistance is based on recently declassified records of the French Resistance, the National Archives, family letters and diaries, and the author’s interviews with Dr. Jackson’s son. Hal Vaughan recounts the Jacksons’ remarkable true story for the first time. It will captivate history buffs, World War II aficionados, and anyone interested in the Paris of that fascinating era.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Why They Call It "The Greatest Generation.".......2004-10-20

This is the true story of three remarkable people who sacrificed everything they had for what they believed in, and to fight against the evil that was Nazi Germany. Because it is written like a novel, the reader will not be able to put the book down. A must read for any serious student of WWII.
