Book Description
A lavishly illustrated survey of American Art Deco architecture.
Art deco architecture flourished in large cities and small towns throughout America in the 1920s and 1930s. Many of the best examplesoffice buildings, movie theaters, hotels, and churchesare still in use. Deco architects, artists, and designers drew on European styles but were most committed to a style that grew organically, as they saw it, from their native soil. Two themes bound Deco buildings and their decorative schemes together: a regional pride that tied buildings to their specific locales and functions, and a growing national symbolism that asserted the buildings' identity as uniquely, independently American.
American Art Decofeatures descriptionsand over 500 color photographsof seventy-five lavish and innovatively designed buildings across the country that have been preserved both outside and in, giving the full scope of this beloved, exciting style.

JAZZ AGE BEAUTY.......2006-10-10
This is quite simply a fantastic book, the images ara crisp and well presented and the text is easy to navigate. Every major Art Deco building in American is chronicled and presented in its best light. It is such a relief that so many of these great buildings have survived, unlike many other architectural styles, Art Deco has always had a huge throng of admirors, people who loved the style and fought very hard to help preserve it. Everytime I set foot in one of these great buildings, like the Louisiana State Capitol or Radio City Music Hall or the Chrysler Building I am reminded of the shear artistry that went into these buildings and am disappointed at the austere, crass styles that have followed. I highly recommend this wonderful book, frankly it is the best I have seen on American Art Deco.
A completely beautiful book.......2006-02-21
For many, a trip to downtown is a visit to something and for something. It is seldom seen as a time of reflection, to see the "what and why" of the great boundaries of concrete, glass and steel. Even our great structures specifically designed to create a feeling of wonder or awe appear to be less a creation for humans than a mere sidelight of structural shrugs, a busy nod to a slight deviation in the casting of the concrete, and, "This won't cost too much more to add this, this *thing* to the design, will it?"
It didn't always work this way.
This is a completely beautiful book. Criticisms are few and far between and are of the "Why didn't she make this a bigger book" variety. This is a big book.
Art Deco was, and is, one of the highest achievements of architecture ever - ever! One look at the Niagara - Mohawk building should convince just about anyone. This book is a required review of the remaining Art Deco buildings with the most integrity.
I only wish that there was more in the way of, say, South Miami Art Deco and more southern works extant but that is the point: You come away from this book looking for the momentous in your own city or area. when you find a (usually restored) specimen, you simply must stop and gawk for great periods of time.
What a great book!
Superb book on American Art Deco Architecture.......2006-01-06
This is the finest book presently available on American Art Deco Architecture, in my opinion. Beautifully photographed and printed in Italy (288 oversize pages in full color), it's a must have if you have an interest in Art Deco and/or Architecture.
All the finest American examples are here, the Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation Building in Syracuse, the Chrysler Building in New York, the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge, and the Eastern Columbia, Wiltern Theatre/Pellissier and Bullocks Wilshire Buildings in Los Angeles, just to name a few. Most of the buildings are photographed from the outside as well as inside, with numerous detail photographs of doors and moldings.
Carla Breeze is an architectural photographer by trade and she does a superb job with this book, I especially like the fact that perspective control has been used in the photographs (all the vertical lines are parallel) which makes for a much more pleasing look. The sleek and modernistic style of Art Deco, popular during the 1920's and 1930's, has yet to be matched, in my opinion, and Ms. Breeze captures the essence of it skillfully.
Glorious deco detail........2003-09-19
Architectural photographer Carla Breeze has focussed her camera on the best seventy-five Art Deco buildings across the Nation and produced a glorious book of color photos that perfectly captures the style. I really liked this book because she concentrates on the architectural detail of each building (with 450 photos) and in many cases, when this detail is on the outside, it is just not viewable from the ground.
The introduction has an interesting eighteen-page photo section dealing with materials, metal, concrete, terra cotta, mosaic, glass, wood and stone. I found this very useful when looking at the images. Each building starts on the spread (though some have more pages) with a street address and some background text and captions for the photos. The elegant layout does not interfere with the wonderful buildings (a tip of the hat to book designer Robert Wiser). Could anyone do anything to improve the photo of the stunning Niagara Mohawk Power headquarters in Syracuse on page seventy-three.
To complement this lovely book have a look at Rediscovering Art Deco USA: A Nationwide Tour of Architectural Delights by Barbara Capitman, Michael Kinerk and Dennis Wilhelm, a methodical nationwide survey, though it does concentrate on commercial buildings rather than houses. If you are Deco spotting on the road leave a space in the glove compartment for David Gebhard's excellent The National Trust Guide to Art Deco in America (Preservation Press) if it's not in this book then most likely it's not worth looking at.

Great book on many levels.......2007-01-20
This is a fantastic source of information for anyone interested in finding out what the career of photo styling entails but also offers lots of tips even for a veteran stylist like me. The author writes with insight, humor and obviously from a great deal of experience.
There are illustrations showing how things are done, many tips and "secrets" and very useful lists and websites.
The chapters on the business of styling and self promotion are alone are worth the price of the book.
Get this book if you want to work as a stylist or if you are working as one now. You'll learn something useful!!!

Genius in Disguise is more than a portrait of Harold Ross. Ross is one of those precious few magazine editors whose essence so richly permeates their publication that to speak of the early years of the New Yorker without speaking of Ross is as unthinkable as Playboy without Hefner or Ms. without Steinem. Everything we associate with the sophisticated, urban magazine that refused to address itself to the "little old lady in Dubuque"--the eclectic (and sometimes obscure) subject matter, the obsessive attention to factual and grammatical perfection, even the visual style of the cartoons--was shaped by Ross. But an editor is nothing without writers and artists, and so Kunkel presents Ross as a team captain of sorts, seamlessly weaving anecdotes about the players into his rich portrait of Ross's life.
Customer Reviews:
Genial and engrossing biography. .......2005-10-30
Genius in Disguise is the kind of biography which is entertaining beyond the limits of its subject matter. Even someone who would not think that they would enjoy a biography of a media figure should find a lot to like in this engaging book.
Using anecdote, history, and a wide range of sources, Kunkel paints a picture of Ross as a man, which in turn teaches us a lot about the New Yorker and the magazine industry. It is published with The New Yorker Prospectus, an article called "Theory and Practice of Editing New Yorker Articles", and Ross Query Sheets as appendices. Additionally, Kunkel provides a selected bibliography with helpful pointers to further reading.
This book would make a good companion piece to Remembering Mr. Shawn's New Yorker by Ved Mehta. I would recommend it for fans of The New Yorker, people interested in the Algonquin Round Table, or simply for anyone with an appreciation for well-written literary biography.
Enjoyed Every Word.......2002-08-08
This wonderful biography tells the story of Harold Ross, The New Yorker's founding editor, and his making and management of this magazine from 1925 until his death in 1951. In the book, Kunkel often takes the position, popular in Ross's time, that Ross's success was improbable, since he was, basically, a tramp newspaperman with a poor education, before he came to New York to build his career in publishing. But throughout his life, Ross made great professional (not personal) choices. And, he had a formidable intellect and curiosity, terrific taste, integrity, and an eye for talent.
In part, Ross was underestimated in his lifetime because he had the unfashionable style in the office of a neurotic worrier. Here's Ogden Nash describing the publisher on the job: "His expression is always that of a man who has just swallowed a bug. Once a day at least he calls you into his office and says, "This magazine is going to hell." He never varies the phrase. Then he says, "We haven't got any organization. I'm licked. We've got too many geniuses around and nobody to take any responsibility. He has smoked five cigarettes while saying that. Then he takes a drink of water, prowls up and down, cries "My God!" loudly and rapidly, and you go out and try to do some work." A captivating book.
"We're a family magazine, goddammit.".......1999-08-22
This book is a solid and readable biography not only of a man but of a magazine, for The New Yorker strikes many of us as a living entity in an age in which most magazines are stiffs. The most interesting part of it is the actual creation of the magazine, from the initial prospectus (still accurate of the current mag in many ways) to the gradual assembling of a poorly-paid but nonpareil team of writers nurtured by one of the most eccentric editors ever to helm a major publication. The rest is also interesting, if ultimately rather sad. Ross came from a modest background and got his feet wet in military publications. He was never easy to be around, and often bullied writers and friends and wives (several became ex-writers, -friends and -wives) over the course of his life. He struggled financially most of his life, and was cheated out of a fair amount of money by a personal secretary who committed suicide rather than face the truth. Yet he brought out the best in a cadre of brilliant writers and artists (Ross never thought of cartoonists who did interior drawings and covers as less than that), and the magazine, no matter what you think of it, changed what one can do and be. By the time that Ross died, he had become a legend. Kunkel does a fair amount of debunking of that legend, while making clear why Ross accomplished what he did. The overall view is one of guarded admiration of its central figure. The development is thematic rather than strictly chronological, so there are variations on certain themes as the story progresses, but I wasn't bothered by it. The book doesn't seem long despite its length. I recommend it for anyone interested in the people behind one of the publishing phenomenons of the modern era. (My subject line is something Ross said when complaints surfaced that The New Yorker was getting too liberal in its epithets. It's related to the statement in the original prospectus that The New Yorker is "not for the old lady from Dubuque".)
Ross and/or White should have edited it........1999-02-04
Maybe it's some kind of deliberate autodeconstructionism or god-knows-what, but this book is a poorly-edited and generally incoherent biography of a great editor who prized coherence. Ross would've been irked by it. The intent seems to have been to do something vaguely chronological, but "vague" is the key word here. Different chapters often cover the same ground in similar ways. The author will often mention something as if it were news, but the reader, if awake, will remember the same event having been covered in greater depth three chapters back. It's a mess. Kunkel is also fond of overusing idioms; five or six times, "foo 'allows as how' bar", and not in quotes, either. These things lunge forth out of otherwise normal prose. It's weird and distracting. After a few iterations, I really began to wonder if the book was edited at all. Another irritating little fact is that while there are photographs of most of the major people mentioned, they're scattered around almost arbitrarily. Wolcott Gibbs makes an appearance, and we're left wondering what he looks like for a hundred pages or so until Liebling or somebody turns up, accompanied by a very nice photograph of Gibbs. Sometimes the photos precede their subjects, leaving one wondering who these people are.
Of course, I did keep reading it. The subject matter is groovy enough to make up for the lousy execution, and Kunkel makes a valuable case for Ross as a serious person; not an idiot-savant, not a clown, but someone who got by on ability more than luck. Ross as human rather than cartoon? Why, yes. It's about time. There's also some fun coverage of Walter Winchell, which explains why Matt Drudge admires the guy so much -- Winchell was inaccurate, irresponsible, and vindictive, too :)
Comprehensive look at the inventor of the modern magazine..........1998-10-03
Harold Ross, a mostly forgotten man, gave his heart and soul to The NewYorker, and ultimately, to all of us. In this well-researched biography, we get a first-hand tour through the mind of Ross, a visionary/pessimist, described by James Thurber as "a man capable of mood-swings...from the wildest flights of fancy, to the darkest pessimism." It would almost seem Kunkel had ridden the rails with this "hobo", or had been a short-lived employee, perhaps one of "The Miracle Men." Ross's life was wonderful, full of the humanity of the day, and the pathos, the tragedy and heartache, the love and respect he enjoyed; albeit with great discomofort. Kunkel, himself a newspaperman, does not treat the editor with kid gloves, but with an honesty that is neither sensational, nor bludgeoning. Kunkel triumphs...

From MyShelf.com review by Lynda Lukow:
"The quest to explore America, to really see it, to feel the nation's strength and share her people's pride, to see where the country stood, to gauge it for ourselves..." Lori Hein, Ribbons of Highway: A Mother-Child Journey Across America.
Around the country in fifty days. No trains, no ships, just a reliable minivan captained by a loving mother determined to ensure that her children discover America's heart and each other.
After the 9/11 tragedy, newspaper columnist cum author Lori Hein consults her two children, plots her course and raids Wal-Mart in preparation for their 12,000-mile journey. They leave Boston, Massachusetts in June. Their route leads them south to Tennessee, then west to the Pacific Ocean, where they make a right turn at Oregon. They travel through the northern states, and then past the Great Lakes on their return to Boston in August.
Though this diary contains vivid descriptions of America's landscape, it is much more than a travelogue of tourist sights and accommodations. Ribbons of Highway is a captivating story of a family's bonding in a stressful time. Along their backroad journey, the Hein family shares their observations of American resilience and pride.
Though this well written, informative and inspiring journal may feed the reader's wanderlust, it will also remind us that our nation will continue to be strong and thriving, no matter what. Despite the lack of maps for the geographically challenged, I highly recommend sharing Ribbons of Highway with those you love. - Lynda Lukow, MyShelf.com

You'll love the trip........2004-02-08
The author vividly captures every mile of their journey with emotion, humor, and appreciation. Ribbons of Highway reminds us of the beauty of the country we live in, the goodness of the people within it, and the joy that comes from sharing life's experiences with those you love.
Great read, great journey........2004-01-19
I love this book! Just finished tonight: a relaxing - yet invigorating - read. I traveled to places I've been before, like the Tetons, and loved the descriptions; taking me back to my own memories. And, I traveled to places I haven't yet been, making a mental list of must-sees: Mackinac Island, Michigan; Fallingwaters, West Virginia; Bend, Oregon; Red Lodge, Montana... I traveled America with this trio, and I feel like I was there. Filled with American pride just by reading.
Discussion of traveler's intuition is right on. But, this is so much more than just a travel book. The personal touches are fantastic. Especially Dana's innocent journal entries, her love of anything horses, and her sweet selflessness. In the end, I too, was happy to be home. And happy to call America home.
fast paced, couldn't put it down, lots of sights and sounds.......2004-01-19
This book presents the joy, beauty, humility, helpfulness and resilience of America and the American people, told through the eyes of a Mom as she travels with her growing children: a son and daughter. I so enjoyed sitting in my big "comfy chair" while taking in the descriptions of their journey. I have heard the author speak of her travels in the past, so having an opportunity to sit and really soak it in made me feel as though I was right there in New Paint (their van) during every mile. What a great trip and beautiful family. I am happy to recommend this lovely book.

Book Description
The Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 has become synonymous with Britain's humiliating defeat at Isandlwana and the heroic defense of Rorke's Drift, where little more than 140 British soldiers kept over 3,000 Zulu warriors at bay. But these celebrated actions were only part of a campaign that lasted for more than six months and resulted in the Zulu Kingdom's destruction, leading to a decade of civil war. In Zulu Vanquished, Ron Lock and Peter Quantrill - authors of the critically acclaimed Zulu Victory - explore in unparalleled detail the events which not only led to the initial British defeat at Isandlwana, but, with King Cetshwayo's failure to follow up his victory and invade Natal, allowed Chelmsford the opportunity to launch his second invasion of Zululand. In this perceptive study, Lock and Quantrill expose the political maneuvering and strategic incompetence that resulted. They describe the disastrous Hlobane Mountain attack, with new primary-source material throwing a fresh slant on Wood's conduct. This is followed by the decisive battles of Kambula, Gingindlovu and the Relief of Eshowe, and the Prince Imperial's death. Finally, we are led to the eventual torching of the Zulu capital of Ondini on the Ulundi plain. Founded on a wealth of first-hand accounts, some published for the first time, as well as the authors' intimate knowledge of the history and terrain of Zululand, Zulu Vanquished is a groundbreaking work that sheds light on the wider Anglo-Zulu conflict and will prove indispensable for scholars and enthusiasts alike.
Customer Reviews:
Zulu's Fate.......2007-01-17
Zulu Vanquished proves to be a well written sequel to the authors' first book, Zulu Victory. However, unlike the first book where the prime subject was the Battle of Isandlwana (excellent account), this book deals with the second campaign against the Zulu Kingdom between February to July of 1879. Also missing from this book is the account of Rorke's Drift although with all honesty, there are enough books written about this battle to satisfied anyone and that Rorke's Drift is part of the initial campaign and won't fit into the premise of the second campaign.
The book covers the preparation and actions of the British forces as they recovered from the defeat at Isandlwana and Lord Chelmsford's race to finished off the campaign before his relief from command. One of the main characters of the book lies around the actions and generalship of Colonel Evelyn Wood whose major defeat at Hlobane Mountain one day was off set by his great victory at Kambula the next day. The account of both battles were excellently written and researched by the two authors.
Book continued on until the final battle of Ulundi where the Zulu Kingdom was finally overthrown. Zulu efforts to find a peaceful solution was totally rejected by Chelmsford who needed a military victory to redeemed himself from the shadow of Isandlwana. There's also a nice chapter on the death of Prince Louis Bonaparte which marked this war on the front pages of every European newsapers.
Its pretty clear that the authors' knowledge on this war proves to be very complete. They also seem to have clear understanding of the terrain it was fought under and its conditions. Many first hand sources were used to reflect on numerous incidents of the war. The book also come with clearly marked maps and color photographs.
If there was a weak point in this book, I thought the authors could have gone into the aftermath of the war more deeper. Fate of Lt. Carey whose's action led to the death of Prince Louis remains a mystery unless the reader have a prior background knowledge. However, while the book isn't as detailed as the first one, I believed that the book did great justice to the understanding of this war.
Review of Zulu Vanquished.......2006-05-07
This is a sequel to the authors' previous book, ZULU VICTORY (2004), the story of the disastrous British defeat at Isandlwanda early in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. ZULU VANQUISHED continues the story of the war from February through July 1879, culminating in the overthrow of the Zulu Kingdom after the Battle of Ulundi. This is a very well-written and fast-paced book, based on primary sources, memoirs, and secondary studies, with extensive use of eyewitness accounts by participants. The authors' assessment of the Battle of Hlobane (28 March 1879) is a major contribution that revises earlier studies, based on the previously-unused papers of a colonial officer. Outstanding photographs, many in color, assist the reader in understanding the distinctive terrain features. A must-have for anyone interested in the Zulu War.

Book Description
MacDonald develops a theory of anti-Semitism based on an evolutionary interpretation of social identity theory. Historical examples of anti-Semitism are analyzed as scientifically comprehensible gentile responses to a distinctive, segregated group. Anti-Semitism has historically been exacerbated by resource competition between Jews and gentiles. Jews have engaged in a wide range of strategies to try to combat it. These strategies include: crypsis, political activity, writing religious and intellectual apologia directed at both ingroup and outgroup members, and engaging in self-deception regarding both the nature of Judaism and gentile responses to Judaism.
Customer Reviews:
The Truth and Nothing but the Truth.......2007-01-23
This is the second part of MacDonald's magnificent trilogy, dealing with the history of disputes between Jews and the rest of the world. Most gentile writers would approach this from the viewpoint that any antipathy was the result of totally unwarranted hate-crime from the majority population, cowardly damning their own ancestors as racist and bigoted. Our hero is made of sterner stuff, clearly detailing what aspects of Jewish behaviour cause anti-semitism.
The bravest chapter is when he demonstrates that Nazism is an almost exact mirror of Judaism! The book is worth buying for this insight alone. Read this book and your view of the world will never be the same again.
Anti-semitism explained.......2006-12-28
Basically you can sum up the message of this book in a few words; the racialism and segregation of gentiles appear in response to Jewish racialism and segregation, and NOT the other way around. The book first deals with the theoretical aspects of group evolutionary theory, and then into the 3 main historical examples of the subject he provides; Jews in the Roman empire, Jews during the Inquisition and finally National Socialism as a gentile mirror-image of Judaism.
He then finds examples of Jewish strategies of minimizing anti-Semitism, of Jewish deception and self-deception, of Jewish rationalization of their own clannishness, and finally his views on why the continuity of Judaism is more than ensured in the current climate, contrary to what we hear from the Jews themselves, hence the hoax of the "ever dying people".
The first part of the book is a bit slow to read, I assume especially for those of us without training in evolutionary psychology, but it quickly picks up pace. You will find hundreds of good quotes in here that are of good use in this age of massive Judaization in the West.
The question we are left with after reading the book is this; since Judaism is more than just an universalistic religion, then what legitimacy is there for Jews defending their ethnic and racial interests, when we as gentiles are deemed pathological while doing the same? What makes Jews so special that they get to play by special exclusive rules that don't apply to gentiles?
Denial of Fact.......2005-08-19
Kevin Mac Donald has done the research and what he states is fact.He his critized by those who fear him.Author Schopehhauer the german philosopher said that the jews should not be prosecuted, and that they would develope as a people, but they should never be allowed to be involved in government other than their own country. Why,because they would always serve the interest of their own before others. The Zionist and U.S. government is an obvious example. What must be kept in mind is that gentile elite support the actions of the Zionist for their own ends. The New world order must degrade
western civilization to compete with India,China, etc. The tactics of the Zionist are degrading the american people. If one does not know their history, idenity,or culture, it is easy to overthrow a state in that condition. The bill of rights does not serve the interest of the king, and do not talk about Declaration of Independence.
Mac Donald states that immigration is a means to do away with white people of western european origen. Why because they are potential SS,yet again elites want this too who are not Zionist. We have to keep in mind that the reasons are the same and different considering the interest.
The news media, what is it selling these days.Is it supporting the dominant culture. What about the movie industry.Do we want to be like Israel, why are we acting the same.Oil,but what else.
EDucation is it better for most than it was in 1960.No child left behine even if it stops 50 percent from proceeding. Is civics taught. Are we proud to be americans. Are we inferior, and others really made america. Were we not the offspring of England. Is it not true that in 1960 90 percent of americans were of western european decent. What happen, and why.Never blame the Zionist alone they are parners who are supported by the senate and congress.Do you really believe the government does not know what is going on.Power, greed, fear,is it a sell out of america as we know it.
Last chance stand up and fight, or die.All you have to do is look and you will see.Illegal immigration,it is not needed.there is not full employment. Why should we subsidize the cooperatons to have cheap labor, and outsource jobs, and let illegal have wellfare benefits that you pay for.Why would you let them pay less to immigrants,so business can keep you from barganing,or having value. Why would one want to change the american culture.By the way western europe is going through the same thing. Why did France and Holland vote no to the european union. The governments for the most part want to degrade the west for expansion. The margin of profit will be less so you have to live and become third world. The elites think we are sheep, are we.What a state of affairs. When and if the elites win, they will fight each other,Zionist and others will never come together, they are not compatible. To tell other people to be multicultural and not be is rediculous, and this is what the Zionist are doing which our government advocates. Now you know why,the full story. If you say anything a jew does not like you are anti semitic. Why are they in the west bank.God gave it to them along with the U.S Harry needed votes.AIPAC what influnce. There are people that use others causes for their own ends.Always in defense of right, only to protect themselves, and to devide and conquer.Check the history of this people. Why have they had so many problems. They do not want to intergrate.Good Luck.Their IQ is on average higher than none jews,Maybe they are trying to teach us something.I am trying to learn, but we are slow.Forgive my less than correct.
An Anti-Semite's absurd and obscene theory of Anti- Semitism.......2005-07-27
Mr.Macdonald is now in the company of the Nazis and the Islamofascists, of those who preach hatred of the Jews.
True, he does not say this directly. But what he does in effect is try to argue that Jews are anti-Gentile, that this is the heart of their ' evolutionary strategy'(nu?) and that this leads to resentment hatred, and murder of Jews.
He in doing this ignores wholly the fundamental teachings of Judaism which teach that every human being is created in the image of God, and is thus of infinite value.
He ignores the fact that the most frequently mentioned commandment in the Jewish Bible is the one about honoring and respecting strangers because the Jews who were strangers in Egypt understand this kind of suffering.
He ignores the fact that among the great Jewish contributions to mankind is the idea of equality before the law.
And while ignoring the heart of Jewish teaching he also ignores the facts of Jewish history.
If Jews are so ' successful ' in evolutionary terms why is it that the Jews who numbered five to eight million people , one out of every ten citizens of the Roman Empire today are less than two tenths of one percent of mankind as a whole. That is had the Jews simply grown at the same rate as the world's population they would be over two - hundred million today, and not around thirteen million.
Jews would not be the Chinese but they would be among the larger peoples of mankind.
Another important area of distinction which escapes the author is that between the actions of individual Jews and that of those acting for the benefit of the Jewish community. The great majority of ' prominent Jews' have no direct relation to action for the Jewish community. And as Hannah Arendt pointed out often their ' prominence' works against the Jewish community as a whole.
One more point. To talk about Jewish successful 'evolutionary strategy' in the same century when over one- third of the Jewish people were murdered is obscene.
The Jews are the only people who have not replaced their losses from the time of the Second World War.
So where is their ' evolutionary numerical success'?
On the other hand , the Jews can say that among their contributions to mankind is the transmission of the idea of One Creator God who relates to each individual human being with love and consideration.
This teaching is however one which the author of this particular piece of hate- literature chooses to reject.
Instead of this work I strongly recommend readers look at works by two non- Jewish writers, Thomas Cahill's "Gifts of the Jews" and Paul Johnson's "History of the Jews" These works also have the advantage of being in readable prose.
Meet the new anti-semitism.......2004-11-26
In his frequent jousts with critics and reviewers, MacDonald always takes the stance that his books do not justify anti-semitism; they merely describe it as a scientifically understandable, indeed predictable, response to certain supposed Jewish traits that he has identified as elements of a long-term Jewish evolutionary strategy. (Many of these criticisms and rejoinders can be found on his own website.) In other words, he is claiming the neutrality of an investigating scientist, and always acts offended when people accuse him of racism or anti-semitism.
If that's the case, why is he a frequent contributor to The Occidental Quarterly? That journal's own statement of principles says, first, that "the West is a cultural compound of our Classical, Christian, and Germanic past," and, second, that "race informs culture." (You'll also find, under principle 4, the lovely statement that "the European identity of the United States and its people should be maintained.")
Case closed. This is an educated racist who is dressing up his bigotry in pseudo-academic language; all he means to say is that Jews have brought on their own persecution. And I'm shocked that he has taken in so many readers. Shame on Praeger for publishing these books.
