Altogether 103 styles of American housing are featured in this book, spanning the earth lodge (circa 300) to the projected space unit (circa 2000). There are full diagrams, history, and a description for each of the Native American and settler homes, including the pueblo, longhouse, and wigwam; the log cabin, garrison house, and saltbox; and on through the Georgian, Greek Revival, false front, Queen Anne, and neomodern. Whether you're a student of architecture, a dabbler in design, a house-history buff or a novice home-buyer attempting to decipher your realtor's descriptions, Lester Walker's American Shelter has a lot to offer.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Field Guide to American Domestic Architecture.......2005-08-17

In the world of architectural field guides, there is a division between the guides that rely heavily on photographs and those that use line drawings to represent buildings. Photographic field guides are good in that you can see actual historic homes. This is a valuable thing for people who like me live very far away from historic areas and rarely see a building over a hundred years old.

However, the great problem with photographic field guides is that it is often times difficult to understand a building style by looking at one or two representative photographs. What's worse is that often times the eye is drawn to details like electric lines or automobiles. One can spend more time trying to identify the decade the photo was taken than on concentrating on the image. For this reason, I prefer field guides that use line drawings to represent buildings. In my opinion, line drawings are a better tool for teaching the different architectural elements that come together to form a style.

Of the field guides that use line drawings, Lester Walker's "American Shelter" is the very best. It is the best for two reasons. First because of the sheer number of styles he identifies. In this book he details 103 styles whereas a typical field guide will usually identifies 20-30 unique styles. Second and foremost, Lester Walker is a very talented artist. His drawings are not hyper technical like the Historical American Building Survey (HABS) drawings which one finds in some field guides. They have a lot of personality which seperates them from what I call the illustrator school of architectural drawings.

I have been collecting field guides for a number of years and this is my favorite guide. That is not to say that there are not other very high quality guides. However, if you need to purchase just one field guide, this is the one. Hopefully, this book will inspire you to start collecting architectural field guides which in my opinion is a most worthy hobby.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for Planners and Designers.......2004-04-15

I purchased this book while I was an undergraduate studying city planning. This book has been on my shelf since it was published and I still use it quite frequently today. This is a fantastic reference for anyone interested in housing, architecture and urban design. In fact, I highly recommend this book to any planning students with a housing or preservation focus. You will not regret having made the investment!

5 out of 5 stars No historian should be without it.......2003-08-14

If you ever have reason to write (fictionally or otherwise) about American architecture (chiefly domestic), you shouldn't miss a chance to add this volume to your shelves. (It's included in the file I always send to Old-West mavens wanting to know what they should read.) Chapters range from two to eight pages in length and cover everything from the earth lodge of the Southeastern Plains Indians to the projected space station now three years past due. Typically, each includes the time and region in which the original style was most abundant, a few paragraphs explaining its history and salient features, and a number of finely detailed pen-and-ink sketches portraying exterior details and often cutaways and floor plans. The book can also be used as a field guide to help you decide what kind of house you happen to be looking at. From log cabins to Frank Lloyd Wright, Mount Vernon to the humble Quonset hut, every major kind of American house is here. This is an item that cries to be brought back into print. Until it is, don't miss a chance to pick up a used copy if you're afforded one.

4 out of 5 stars American Shelter.......2002-08-13

I own the poster American Shelter by the same author, and wanted to see the explanations behind the dates and titles. As an architectural historian, I've studied many of these styles, but there are some new variations of house styles that are not part of any other reference book. This book has fun graphics and easy to follow descriptions. For the trained historians, architects, etc., this book is an amusing addition to your collections. To the architectural housing enthusiasts, this could be a helpful resource.

5 out of 5 stars American Shelter: a definite "keeper".......2001-04-08

If your bookshelf only has room for one book on American architecture, this should be that book. Most of the books on architecture seem like a lot of style, but not much substance: many pages of pictures, often quite enticing, but leaving the reader with little knowledge of just what constitutes the various architecture styles so illustrated, or how styles relate to one another.

Lester Walker spent hundreds of hours researching various American architectural styles, going to such sources as the 1900's editions of Ladies Home Journal, which published plans for "A Small House With Lots of Room in it" by a young upstart named Frank Lloyd Wright. Walker gives us the first-floor house plans, along with a birds-eye view of Wright's "Small House." In this illustration Walker uses captions and arrows to innumerate the salient features of "Wrightian" architecture.

So it goes throughout American Shelter. Walker starts with the dwellings of American Indians and takes us through over 100 different styles that were popular at one time or another in our diverse history. A read through this book is a stroll through our history. The author not only points out the defining features of each style, but also tells why and how it came into vogue.

Color photos are not the only "must have" features conspicuously absent. Missing is also judgmental, cavalier, snobbery. No architectural style is treated as inferior, common, or "tiresome." Quonset Hut, Converted Train Car, and Prefabricated are given just as much respect as Victorian, International, and Prairie.

Examples of houses of various architects that typify or characterize each style are shown in line drawings with accompanying floor plans and often with illustrations on house building styles or techniques. For example, on page 71 a "method for making cedar clapboards" is illustrated. Balloon, Platform, and Post and Beam framing methods are explained with accompanying illustrations.

The book is about individual dwelling units, not apartment houses, and not commercial or industrial buildings. For what it is, and does, it is the definitive work. I have had many hours of enjoyable reading and learning from this book. My only complaint is with the bookbinder, not the author. Some of the pages of my copy are upside down! Perhaps, like the famous upside-down airplane stamp, my copy is rare and valuable? Then again: perhaps not, but right side up, or upside down, it has been well worth the purchase price.

One final piece of advise: buy the hardback copy, not the paperback. This book is a "keeper", one you will frequenly get down from the bookself to review, loan to friends (holding the friend's firstborn ransome for the book's return), and pass on in your will.

Book Description

A landmark of architectural history, AMERICAN HOMES surveys over 100 American housing styles and illustrates them through nearly 1000 line drawings. Using his own unique combination of "exploded" diagrams and floor plans and easy-to-follow text, award-winning architect and author Lester Walker has created the definitive bible of home design, fully practical but wonderful, too, for armchair browsing and dreaming.

Walker describes each style's signature features, and how, where, when, and why the style developed in response to the landscape. The full evolution of American residential architecture is represented, including Dutch Colonials, Log cabins, Southern plantation mansions, Carpenter Gothics, Neo-modern styles, and more.

For anyone who has ever designed or owned a home--or just lived in one--AMERICAN HOMES is the quintessential reference to our country's dwellings, past, present, and future.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A very good book -- but.......2005-05-12

I am interested in historic architecture -- mostly eastern coast architecture of the colonial period. And this book does a grand job of displaying it in its varied forms and regional and ethnic differences. As you can see I rated it at 4. Why not 5? Because I caught a couple of mistakes in the identification of some of the buildings -- both as to location and to period of history from which they came.
The first mistake I noticed is the octaginal blockhouse on Davis Island in Edgecome, Maine on page 67. Mr. Walker idenitifies it as a building from the 1650's. It was in fact built in 1805 as the central fortification of an earthwork and palsade gun battery to protect Sheepscot Bay. It is one of a whole string of idential coastal fortifications designed and built by the Army Corp of Engineers the specific engineer for this series of fortifications was Moses Porter -- at that time based at West Point. I have lived most of my life within 40 miles of this building.
The second building that I believe to be mislocated is found on page 95. It is correctly identified as an early georgian house. Where I disagree with Mr. Walker is it location. It is in fact a house that stands to this day in the city of Portmouth, New Hampshire and was the home of an 18th century merchant of that city. There is also a wooden example of the same house on route 1a just outside of the town of Newberryport, Massachusetts and another one built, 1782, in Saco, Maine.
With these exceptions I have enjoyed reading and re-reading this book

5 out of 5 stars A Splendid Architectural Overview.......2004-04-23

"American Homes" by Lester Walker is a bargain at the price Amazon is charging. It is a lavishly illustrated (albeit in black and white) comprehensive work detailing every style of American home in drawings, sections, and elevations emphasizing the differences that make a certain home or style unique. In this way it is extremely useful for anyone with even a passing interest in architecture to learn about the varying styles of American homes.

Mr. Walker does not visibly seem to favor any one style over another, and avoids editorializing for the most part. Instead he seems to love all the differing styles for what they are, in different ways, and for different reasons, depending of the particular house in question. In addition to specifics on certain examples and styles, Mr. Walker also gives the reader a historical perspective of housing developments in a developmental time frame, starting with Pueblo and Tipi styles to the Inflatable, Deconstruction, Brutalism, and Neomodern styles that are decidedly more recent. As a fan of creative contemporary architecture, I especially found the coverage of the International Revival movement, the quirky Silo and Yurt homes of the early 1970s, and Fantasy homes from the 1940s in the shapes of an elephant (Margate City, NJ), Mother Goose (Hazard, KY), and a pig (Los Angeles, CA), among others, to be delightful.

This is a wonderful volume and I highly endorse it to anyone from architectural historian to collectors of Americana.

5 out of 5 stars A Great History.......2003-01-05

I really love this book - it has given me some useful information on the kinds of houses and buildings I may see all over the country - an historical education that I have wanted. And this book makes it fun & easy to learn. The illustrations are cool and the format is very helpful.

    Book Description

Few subjects have more immediate appeal to children than animals, and few methods of teaching youngsters to appreciate fine art have proven more successful than those of art educator Gladys S. Blizzard. In COME LOOK WITH ME: Animals in Art, the third volume of her series of interactive art books, she makes the most of children's natural curiosity about animals to introduce them not only to twelve magnificent works of art, but also to a whole new way of encountering art. Using an approach which is as fun as it is effective, the author deftly guides her young audience toward their own understanding of and delight in the world of art.

The works featured in Animals in Art represent a variety of styles which youngsters will encounter again in museums and in books: the muscular realism of Rosa Bonheur's The Horse Fair, the delicate romanticism of Martin Johnson Heade's Cattleya Orchid and Tree Brazilian Hummingbirds, and the bold abstraction of Henri Matisse's The Snail. They also represent an intriguing menagerie of beasts, from the mysterious deer and horses stampeding across the wall of Lascaux cave to Paul Klee's whimsical heart -nosed cat dreaming of a bird.

Each work of art is accompanied by a brief biographical sketch of the artist and a series of open-ended questions designed to encourage discussion. Through her thought-provoking text, Mrs. Blizzard encourages children to imagine themselves in the paintings: striding among the solemn-eyed creatures in Edward Hick's The Peaceable Kingdom, setting out on a voyage aboard Roy DeForest's fantastical Canoe of Fate. In each work of art, children will discover the rewards of looking closely to find the details that bring a painting to life.

Whether enjoyed in a family or a classroom setting, COME LOOK WITH ME: Animals in Art offers art lovers of all ages the perfect way to celebrate what Gladys Blizzard calls "the pleasure of shared experience and to nurture a lifelong appreciations for the visual arts.

Anyone who was around the San Francisco club scene in the late 70s and early 80s knew this guy by sight. He's be scurrying through crowds and chatting with everyone. I knew I was on the right track musically when he was at just about every show I was.

There's some great pics in here and lots of fun memories. I was at the Ramones show the night he was killed out on Harrison St. as he worked his way into the road to take a picture of the crowd. It was a surreal night. SF was never quite as fun after that. He was a real character.

Few writers--and even fewer cartoonists--have captured the imagination of childhood more effectively than Watterson in his many Calvin and Hobbes cartoons--and apart from his Tenth Anniversary Book, this is probably my favorite Calvin and Hobbes collection.

    Book Description

In the world that Calvin and his tiger Hobbes share, treasures can be found in the most unlikely places, from the outer regions where Spaceman spiff travels to the rocks in the backyard - this curious duo roams their world in search of fortunes (and misfortunes!) to be experienced. Whether Calvin and Hobbes are blasting off on another interplanetary adventure or approaching warp speed on a downhill wagon ride, their capers are repartee consistantly charm and refresh their readers' days. On his own, Calvin is prey to the insidious killer bicycle, is the arbiter of the dad poll, is the creator of a legion of snowmen who provide an incisive social commentary, and Hobbes is always there as the perfect companion. Watterson's talen is evidenced by the range of thought provoking emotions the strip encompasses in addition to the laughs it induces: the loyalty and friendship between Calvin and Hobbes, the challenge of being a patient parents, and the sardonic viewpoint of a cynical six-year-old ("I'm a 21st-century kid trapped in a 19th-century family," laments Calvin) combine to make this one of the best-loved strips in cartoon history.

5 out of 5 stars Calvin and the Snowmen.......2006-09-07

Every "Calvin and Hobbes" book contains wonderful insight into our society, children, and parents in general. Bill Watterson has an excellent way of looking at us from a slightly twisted child's point of view, but a child who has to be a genius or near-genius.

This collection contains some of the best winter strips that Watterson ever created. The images of a snow man worshipping Calvin are funny, especially in the last portion of the strip. In another strip Calvin has created a group of small snow men, and has taken another one to the roof as a potential suicide. While this strip sounds very twisted, it's also humorous. Another winter strip sums up the parents feelings as they note that Calvin's activities have led to the neighbors planting really big trees along the boundaries of their property.

Hobbes is an integral part of Calvin's life, ranging from insulting to supporting to poignant. One of the best poignant strips is when Hobbes takes Calvin out to the school bus while it's raining, carrying an umbrella for him. Soon Calvin's parents look out the window to see Hobbes as a stuffed animal with an umbrella tucked under one arm. Calvin's father goes out to retrieve Hobbes and then we see another image of Calvin sitting in school staring at the clock, clearly worrying about Hobbes in the rain.

There are quite a few collections of "Calvin and Hobbes." Of the eight or nine collections that I have I have found every one to be a worthy addition to my library and hope to eventually have them all. Of the "Calvin and Hobbes" collections I have this one is one of the best.

    Enjoy!

Generation TreX: My Thoughts is a journal recounting the personal experiences and insights of a young man while he plans a 27-month non-motorized trek of service throughout America.

1/24/00 - What will become of this quest? Will anyone care? I don't have an answer for these questions and I'm not sure I really want to. To be honest, I'm feeling a little tired of this idealistic crusade. I have no desire to make it a big hoopla event. I've been writing that the success of the Trek depends upon my committment to the principles and not the attention it recieves. In reality, however, I have been living the opposite. I have gotten so focused on the image and organization of the Trek that I have stopped simply doing it. This Trek is about exemplifying certain qualities in life, not getting on a TV show. It is about having the courage to display an example for others to follow. I don't have control of its scale (how many people hear about it), I just have control of its success ( living its principles regardless of the circumstances). If I make it home it will be nothing short of a miracle. I don't know if I will complete the goal of the 10,350 mile Trek. I do know that I believe in its mission and have to try. I may set out on the Trek, but it is the support team and the people I meet along the way that will bring me home.

When traffic gets so congested that it can no longer move, engineers say it has reached a state of "gridlock". According to Ralph Keyes, many of us are in a state of "timelock". This is the condition that occurs when claims on our time grow so demanding that we find it impossible to wring one more second out of a crowded calendar. In this informative and entertaining book, which is filled with real-life examples, Keyes explains how we got ourselves into this position. He considers the "vanishing pause," "speed inflation," and "the convenience catch." Paradoxically, Keyes says, a key source of timelock are the very tools we've adopted to save time: computers, faxes, microwave ovens. Keyes doesn't just assess the sources of timelock but suggests how we can get out from under its pressure.

                    Book Description

This is a new collection of Ian Hernon's three previous books, Massacre and Retribution, The Savage Empire and Blood in the Sand. Much has been written about the great British military triumphs of the nineteenth century, but there are many more astonishing stories which have been largely forgotten. These forgotten wars cannot hope to compete in history with the Crimean War or the Boer War, but for acts of sheer courage and endurance, they deserve to be remembered. Using the actual words of the soldiers themselves, Ian Hernon presents a fascinating account which evokes Victorian colonial warfare in all its barbarity, and the self-righteous belief of the British in the rectitude of their cause.

                    5 out of 5 stars Savage & Bloody.......2006-08-21

This book is an excellent companion to "Queen Victoria's Little Wars". There is some time overlap, and a bit of repetition in the wars, but mostly this book (a compilation of three works by the same author) covers the really unknown battles and wars. Some of them were very brief, some took many years, but all of them were savage and bloody. The British looked for almost any excuse to impose their hegemony on a distant country inhabited by what they considered inferior peoples. Some of their opponents, however, were fairly adept at fighting, and it cost the Empire dearly in men and money to subdue them. My one quibble with this excellent book is the total lack of maps, which really would have helped in areas that are completely unfamiliar to the average reader.

                    Book Description

After leaving the office of the presidency in 1877, Ulysses S. Grant embarked on a journey worthy of his legendary namesake, an around-the-world tour that took him from Europe to the Middle East and Asia over two and one-half years. Accompanying Grant was journalist John Russell Young, a wartime associate who was working in Europe as a correspondent for the New York Herald when Grant first arrived in England. On assignment for the Herald, Young joined the former president's entourage and faithfully recorded every detail of the grand tour -- the sightseeing, official visits, travel conditions, and Grant's candid discussions with heads of state and other notables about the Civil War and other matters of state. So far from home, Grant felt free to speak his mind about his fellow Union officers, his Confederate adversaries, and the conduct of the war, at far more length than he would in his celebrated but close-to-the-vest memoirs. These salty reminiscences of the war give this travelogue its greatest importance for posterity.

First published in two volumes in 1879, Young's account has been carefully abridged by historian Michael Fellman and is now available to modern readers in a single volume that, besides his adventures abroad, distills Grant's unvarnished memories and judgments of his wartime and executive experiences. We read Grant's opinions of such Civil War figures as Stonewall Jackson ("Jackson's fame as a general depends upon achievements gained before his generalship was tested, before he had a chance of matching himself with a really great commander."); George McClellan ("It has always seemed to me that the critics of McClellan do not consider this vast and cruel responsibility--the war, a new thing to all of us, the army new, everything to do from the outset, with a restless people and Congress."); and Joe Johnston ("I have had nearly all of the Southern generals in high command in front of me, and Joe Johnston gave me more anxiety than any of the others. I was never half so anxious about Lee... Take it all in all, the South, in my opinion, had no better soldier than Joe Johnston."). An intimate portrait of one of America's most brilliant--and thoughtful--military men, Around the World with General Grant is a classic work of American journalism and history. It is also a vivid and insightful travel book, filled with reflections on exotic places and on Western, particularly British, imperialism as America was on the reluctant verge of entering the world stage.

                    4 out of 5 stars The U.S. Tour.......2005-04-25

A fine addition to the library of any serious student of U.S. Grant. But readers interested in what world travel was like in the late 1870s or those interested in the specific history and culture of countries such as Eygpt, Viet Nam, China, and Japan will also find this volume of interest.

This is not a biography of General Grant but a trip back into the time machine to a different era. I do quarrel with the editor, Professor Fellman, when he declares General Grant "...the oddest member of the American pantheon." The book itself disproves this "odd" assessment.

1 out of 5 stars Why Did They Bother?.......2003-10-24

When I first discovered the existence of this volume, I was frankly puzzled. Why reissue the dullest Grant book this side of Adam Badeau's "Military History"? Having read this abridgment, I am still pondering the strange ways of publishers. The editing on this book seems to have been done virtually at random--many of the few interesting anecdotes in Young's book have disappeared, while pages and pages of tedium remain in all their original glory.

The book's main selling point--the "Table talk" or informal interviews Young conducted with Grant--are mildly interesting in spots, but are not, on the whole, valuable enough to justify this new edition, particularly since Young's original two volumes are readily available at most libraries and on the internet's various used bookstores. Instead of wasting their time on such a relatively common and uninteresting work, I wish the publishers had turned their attention to reissuing more compelling old books on Grant that are less readily available.

4 out of 5 stars A great improvement over the original!.......2003-07-03

Initially I was flabbergasted that anyone would reprint this epic work from 1879. I have the original two-volume set and in its original form it is dated, to say the least. The voluminous set contained so much filler material that it resembled an elaborate travelogue when General and Mrs. Grant appear only occasionally. In thousands of pages of text and line drawings, Grant appears in only 25% of the total pages.

However, this new edition is edited by Michael Fellman and he does quite a nifty job in eliminating the extraneous material and retaining the essentially great elements of Young's original volumes. The heart of the book is Grant's table talk, where he spoke with rare candor about some of his civil war contemporaries such as Lee, Longstreet, Jackson, Sheridan and Sherman. These comments still resonate today, and rarely did Grant speak about these men at such length or with such perception.

John Russell Young idolized Grant and saw in him the qualities that make him the quintessential American hero. Grant was a bashful, hopelessly naive and honest man, and these traits come through in this work, illuminating his wry humor and extremely likeable character. Fellman has done well in editing this new version which focuses the reader on Grant and not trivial details about flowers, luggage or place settings. A nice book!

                                        Book Description

In the U.S., before any additive is added to a food product the manufacturer must submit it to the FDA for approval and prove that its use has a reasonable certainty of not causing harm. The Priority-Based Assessment of Food Additives (PAFA) Database, compiled and maintained by the U.S. FDA/CFSAN (Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition), is a team resource for evaluating the status of all food additives. Food Additives: Toxicology, Regulation, and Properties contains a wealth of facts regarding the chemical and toxicological effects of direct food additives. It consists of identifying/administrative information for nearly 2,000 compounds that are, could be, or have been added to the U.S. food supply. Limited information is also provided for an additional 1,000 compounds. Part 1, Administrative and Chemical Information, includes data such as the CAS registry number, name of the compound, other identifying numbers, exposure to the population, and much more. The toxicological data fields are divided into three main sections: Genetic Toxicity and Cytotoxicity Information, Acute Toxicology Information, and Oral Toxicology Information. These sections contain data from toxicological studies.
