Divided into three convenient parts, Architect's Essentials of Marketing is extremely informative and easily digestible. Part I: Marketing Strategy, Part II: The Business Development Cycle, Part III: Marketing Tools and Resources.
Similar to the best professors I had in college, author, David Koren is passionate and to the point. The material is presented in a well-written, upbeat and positive tone. Explanation of major points is supported by easy-to-understand tables and diagrams. In addition to the valuable insights found in the main text, margins throughout the book are packed with short thought provoking sidebars.
Architect's Essentials of Marketing is a must-read for any individual or firm serious about building long-term success. Heck, this book would help professionals in any field.

"The meaning of art is not authenticity but the expression of authenticity," wrote the Hungarian-born photographer Gyula Halász, better known as Brassaï, whose unflinching yet deeply sensual portraits of the seamier side of Paris nightlife during the 1930s and 1940s summon up an era when decadence and desperation ran side by side. Brassaï's curiosity about his subjects and the originality of his approach highlight the depth of his identification with Paris, his adopted city. The son of a professor of French literature, Brassaï had first visited the city at the age of 5; later, in the early 1920s, he returned to make it his home after completion of studies in fine art in Budapest and Berlin. Settling in the bohemian arrondissement of Montparnasse, mixing with artists and writers, Brassaï took up photography "in order to capture the beauty of streets and gardens in the rain and fog, and to capture Paris by night." He lures us into the smoky, highly charged world of clubs and cafés, where nicotine-stained lovers in cheap clothes become impossibly desirable through the camera's lens. Streets, stairways, and canals are moodily lit; even a man rummaging for food in a rubbish bin takes on a cinematic aura. Yet Brassaï's photographs contain a strange mixture of seediness and resilience that ultimately triumphs over any false notions of glamour. He depicts scenes of poverty and its trappings--alcoholism, prostitution, violence, hunger. The chaotic social whirl of 1930s Paris dies down to the quiet suffering of a city under occupation, with its two great literary lights, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, sitting out the war, stony-faced in the Café de Flore. Accompanied by extracts from Brassaï's own writings, contemporaries such as Henry Miller, and essays from other contributors, and containing 308 images, Brassaï is a fine testament to an artist whose images of one city have proved so enduring. --Catherine Taylor, Amazon.co.uk
Book Description
One of the major photographers of the century, Brassa is best known for his chronicling of demimonde Paris in the 1930s and his classic portraits of artists such as Matisse, Picasso, and countless Surrealists. Along with the superb duotone reproduction of Brassas work, this monograph will include an interview with his widow and essays on his distinguished career.

Extensive, In-Depth Look at the Breadth of Brassai's Work.......2000-11-13
This book deserves more than five stars.
Before going further, let me mention that Brassai's images contain many sinners and show the seamier side of Paris. For example, there are many photographs of prostitutes here. If such subjects upset you, do avoid this volume.
The collection of Brassai's work at the Musee National d'Art Moderne at the Pompidou Centre in Paris was recently expanded from 300 to 500 items due to a large deposit by Mme. Gilberte Brassai, his widow. This monograph greatly benefits from these additions. The monograph also commemorates the 100th anniversary of his birth in 1899.
Best known for his photography, Brassai had many other dimensions: collector, scholar, sketcher, sculptor, and writer. His self description was as "a creator of images." This book does an excellent job of capturing all of these elements so we can better understand the entire man and his work.
As Brassai said, "The meaning of art is not authenticity . . . but the expression of authenticity." Why does he say that? Well, his method of photography required careful staging because of the bulkiness of his equipment and its slow speed. So, although an image may seem like something taken by a news photographer from the Daily Blurb, Brassai's techniques required that subjects hold their poses for long periods of time. Much like Cindy Sherman does today using herself as the model, those in the photographs were often friends of Brassai's who were posing as someone else. So what is remarkable about these "candid" photos is his "use of re-creation and reconstruction" to produce them.
Taking the photograph was really just the beginning. Using darkness as his ally, it is the print that makes the difference to his representations. "A negative means nothing for my kind of photographer." "It's the artist's proof that counts."
Here are my favorite photographic images in the book:
Notre-Dame, c. 1930-32
The Pont Neuf, c. 1932
The Viaduc d'Auteiul, 1932
The Baker, c. 1930-32
Public Urinals, c. 1932
For a Detective Story, 1931-32
The Big Night at Longchamp, July 1937
False Sky, 1934-35
Nudes of 1934
Matches, c. 1930
Picasso, His Studio and Works, 1932-46
Montmartre, c. 1935-37
Metro Pillar, 1934 (you will see a man's face in the shadow of the pillar)
Odalisque Transmutation, 1934/1967 (this is clearly influenced by Picasso)
The essays in the book are excellent. I especially liked Alain Sayag's comparison of his work to Chinese painting.
I also learned a lot about his life. Like many famous photographers he had to earn a living by doing more commercial work. These images often were done on his own time, late at night. Interestingly, many great photographic images were created in only 1-3 takes. In part, this reflected his poverty.
Actually, he had earlier earned a living from writing about France for German newspapers. The Depression began to cut off that source of funds, and photography was taken up in part to supplement his income. By selling the story and the images, he could get paid a little more. He also worked for Harper's Bazaar taking photographs by day for many years.
The text also contains many selections from what Henry Miller and he had to say about each other and their long-term friendship. This emphasizes "seeing only what is."
My appreciation of the photography was improved by seeing his drawings and sculptures. Clearly influenced by prehistoric and primitive art, many of these images look like fertility gods. His women are all bottom. From these, I could understand his graffiti photographs of images that could literally have come from the caves at Lescaux. So in looking for the "reality" Brassai was reaching deeper into our ancient psyches than other photographers before and since.
I came away very much more interested in Brassai, as I am sure you will be.
After you finish consider Brassai, I suggest you ask yourself how you could add more dimensions of expression to your personal life. What can you share that is both "real" and important for others? How can you best accomplish that?
Au revoir.
For the Love of Brassai.......2000-09-06
It was only several years ago that I had noticed the brilliant work of Brassai. The Chicago Institute of Art was having a special exhibit featuring his work. I stood before each photograph for what seemed like an eternity. The way that he captures the essence of the human life, the laughter along with the tears, brings a flood of emotions to any observer. My interest in Brassai only grew from this exhibit. I then started to hunt out books on him, his life, his work but I wound up a little disappointed due to most of his work is out-of-print. When I had been scanning Amazon.com and found a new book, Brassai, I was highly interested. I awaited the day that it would finally be published. That day came. As I turned the pages of the book, I felt as if I am back in the Art Institute. The quality of the photographs, the meaning of the words, by close friends, and from Brassai himself add to the pleasure and overall joy of the book. He depicts a time in history that is meant and needed to be cherished. Brassai reaches into the human heart and soul and brings out strength, determiniation, and a smile. These feelings are only emphasized on the pages of this magnificant book. I only hope that more will follow so that Brassai can touch more lives, touch more hearts, and bring emotions to the forefront of everyone's lives.
At last, a superior Brassai monograph.......2000-08-01
When Abrams released their long-delayed book on Brassai last December, THE EYE OF PARIS, I was very critical of the entire piece. The images weren't well-printed, the selection was mundane, and the whole thing had an oddly slapped together quality, especially for such a major publisher. Now we have Bullfinch's answer to the recent Brassai gap, and it is a clear success, head and shoulders above this earlier release. After only a relatively cursory look at the book, it is clear that this is what we've been waiting for. The selction of images is deep and varied, mixing both the iconic with the lesser known, the printing is lustrous and dimensional, and the layout is both attractive and compelling. The production may not match the incredible PARIS BY NIGHT reissue of the late 80's, but nothing probably ever will. That said, this book looks very good indeed. I haven't read the impressively credited text yet, but the visuals are certainly terrific, the most important thing, obviously, in a photography book. It is hard to imagine a superior monograph on this seminal figure forthcoming anytime soon. Grab it and feast.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Scarlet, the femme fatale of the text, learns a few not so pleasant things about her own family and order. Alex and his mentor and vampire teacher go their own separate ways. There is also an evil vampire queen hanging around. Really, how many good vampire queens are there? Not too many, really. If you set out to create a race of bloodsuckers you aren't likely to be a happy community volunteer.
Riding the wave.......2001-07-29
After the great first volume ("Loyalty & Loss") and a little less good second volume ("Heaven & Earth") this volume (which collects #13-18) rides the upwards tide of the wave again, it being the best volume of the series so far. It starts of with an Angel who falls from Grace and now has to learn to adjust on earth. A character that proves to be a key character along the way. Lighthearted but of importance to the story still. Alex still doesn't know exactly what all this 'Chosen One' stuff is supposed to be about but he draws his own conclussions and tries to be the boundary between humanity and Hell by keeping the killing level as low as possible. Something that not all his friends can appreciate (Joe). Alex' puberty kicks in too. Scarlet X starts her own quest to learn what she really is after hearing an unsettling revelation about her kin in the previous volume. Something which tells her she and Alex haven't met for the last time yet. On Christmas Eve Alex meets Satan for the second time who gives him something of which he thought he always wanted it (really by far the best issue of the volume, although it doesn't add much to the main story). After that Alex and Ekimus each go on their way to prepare themselves for what's thoughtto be the final confrontation with uber-vampire Lisseth.
I'm glad to see the serie get back to his starting quality again and people who stuck along so far will enjoy this volume very much. It's a must to read the other volumes prior to this one though, so don't use this as a starting point. If you've been here all along you'll enjoy it a lot. Take into consideration btw that the funny-level of volume I still isn't reached here. It's a good read but the story remains quite serious and the oneliners of volume 1 belong to the past.
Note: People who enjoy the Crimson series would do well to pick up the first "Wetworks" TPB. The genres and main storyline are alike and Portacio's artwork is also very much worth it.
Gripping vampiric tales.......2001-04-07
The world did not start as we had known. I mean, it has, but some of creation has been forgotten or ignored. Like that hateful Lisseth and her Grigorian mate, Ekimus who came together to give birth to an evil race which rules the night: Vampires. Alex Elder is one such vampire, but a bit different. He has retained his humanity even though for his horrible transformation. He now travels the world and believed to be a 'Chosen One' who shall become our last stand when the fated day comes. Alex is somewhat of a reluctant hero, and his struggle in this new dark world is the base for Crimson, in my honest opinion one of the best comics to come out in the last few years or ever. This incredible read, masterfully penciled by Humberto Ramos, is a must read for fans of the vampire-horror genre, or for anyone that is looking for something different. It is a 24 issue series, so you can be sure you're getting yourself a solid story with a solid beginning and ending.

Book Description
On September 13, 2000, Michel Auger was walking away from his car in a parking lot across the street from the offices of Le Journal de Montréal when he was shot in the back six times. Miraculously, although at least one bullet lodged in his spine, no vital organs were damaged. Auger was on his feet again within weeks, and able to resume his normal life.
The practice of journalism is dangerous in many parts of the world. But in Canada? The idea that an assassin would attempt to take the life of a journalist because of something he wrote is almost unthinkable. Either a deadly new threat has appeared on the scene or Michel Auger has learned something that is truly dangerous to know. Or perhaps both propositions are true.
Michel Auger has been a crime reporter for some 30 years. He has covered mafia trials and corruption scandals, notorious murders and government inquiries. What he has seen and recorded has ranged from the sordid to the bizarre. He has interviewed notorious criminals, like Alvin "Creepy" Karpis, a member of the Ma Barker gang whose capture helped make J. Edgar Hoover’s name, and infamous Canadians, like the Montreal drug dealer Lucien Rivard, who escaped from Bordeaux jail while awaiting extradition to the United States. He has travelled to the Far East to see for himself where the drug trade begins, and to Sicily where he traced the origins of organized crime. Michel Auger’s knowledge of Canada’s underworld is as comprehensive as that of any reporter alive.
In recent years he has developed a particular interest in the criminal activities of biker gangs, especially the Hell’s Angels and their rivals, the Rock Machine. Without a doubt, it was his series of articles in the spring of 2000 about the growing links between the Angels and other criminal organizations that led to the attempt on his life. Both the threat to civil society posed by the Angels and Michel Auger’s knowledge of their affairs had become so great that violence was the natural outcome.
But, amazingly, Michel Auger survived the attempt on his life. In this frank, fascinating, and sometimes funny memoir, he tells about the bad guys he has known, the strange scenes he has witnessed, and above all, the true story of his deadly encounter with the bikers.

Book Description
Life in Morgana is an account of what happened in the town of Morgana during author Ottavio Pejrano's first two years of residence.
Morgana is located in the northern Apennines of Italy and the story starts with the trial of a woman for attempted murder:
"And so, according to circumstantial evidence, you appear to be guilty of attempted murder of Riccardo Buonaventura, nicknamed the Bloodsucker. Do you deny that?" Asked the judge lowering her spectacles to the tip of her nose and peering at the defendant over the rim of her glasses.
"I certainly do!" exclaimed Marta, the notorious lesbian of Morgana. "And to prove my innocence, I have with me the diary of a newcomer to our town, who settled on a nearby farm two years ago. Can you grant me the time to read this manuscript?"
"Well," said the judge, "what else is there to do in this forgotten town? It's a rainy day, all the roads are full of mud and I am very comfortable here, with a full pot of hot coffee by my side. Might as well hear your story. Go ahead!"

This is the Mother"s "Bible" on the obvious things that you usally learn by mistakes. With this book you need not "Learn by mistake" These mothers who wrote this found out and are now sharing their mistakes to the world.
I use it as part of evey baby gift I send out to new Moms
Finally the FUN part of parenting.......2007-06-12
Too bad this book was too late for me but I have given it to my new mother nieces and they have loved it. I got a lot of, "Are you kidding me?" and "Shut up!" when they read about all the stuff they never even knew existed. And I said, "Oh, yes, all true." Parenthood is a minefield and THIS is the map that gets you thru it without blowing up your kid or yourself. And it's a quick easy read that you can absorb without stress because the stuff is so funny you can't forget it. Even my nephews-in-law picked it up so you know it's good if a father will read it. Now I wish they'd write one about what they know about menopause. Quick!
Perfect for first time parents!.......2007-06-09
LOVED THIS BOOK!!
I'm not a mom. I'm a dad, of an only child, now 24 and on her own. So, my wife and I went through all the panic and angst of first-time parents a long time ago, facing each new crisis ("Arghh! What do we do now?") as it came, stumbling through as best as we could, seeking advice from others who had trod the parenting path before us. Our poor kid must've felt like a science experiment as we tried "A," "B" and "C" until we finally got it right. When we saw this book, my wife and I bought it with a mind to giving it to "first time" moms (and dads) like we were. It is fabulous. Doesn't claim to be the be-all-end-all parenting book. Rather, it delivers wonderfully on its subtitle:
"A practical guide to child rearing told in a really nice, funny way that won't make you feel like a complete idiot the way all those other parenting books do."
Written by three working moms who combined their years of practical experience along with that of lots of "Other Mothers" so that we can learn all those lessons the "easy way," not the "hard way." Full of tidbits and tips from birth up into elementary school, ranging from the obvious to the devious. Funny, great perspective on dealing with that new person in the family which seems so tiny, yet changes us so fundamentally. Very easy to read. The book we wish we had when our child was an infant.
We have given this book to three first-time parents so far. Each of them has loved it, and thanked us profusely. We will give it to every single first time parent we know, and are telling all our younger friends about it.
Not your run of the mill parenting book.......2007-06-03
I've read more parenting books over the years then I care to count. Each book had it's points that I related to, while others I just skimmed over. This book has something for everyone. It's funny, honest, and while some may not agree about the many social pressures of child rearing, or feeding your kid macaroni and cheese, they are facts of life. It's a little "out of the box" which appeals to me. I enjoyed it.
Perfect to read in between gassing up your hummer & your next cell phone call..........2007-05-31
If this represents the current status of parenting I think we should all be concerned:
* "One mother's opinion is that child proofing has become a high end industry only after nannies became more affordable to the middle class. She says we have to childproof because we're afraid the nannies aren't watching the kids as closely as they should be."
*Staples for the kitchen of any home with children under the age of twelve: all purpose flour, sugar, confectioner's sugar, hidden valley ranch dressing, hot dogs, chicken tenders, macaroni & cheese, canned soup and chocolate chips >In fairness to the authors they did include the ever nutritious celery and tiny bagged carrots as the vegetables on their list!
* Advice includes serving on Little League boards and sucking up to private school administrators to be sure your child is "treated well" and having multiple birthday parties when there are just too many kids to include in one party.
* One woman states that her instincts told her she didn't have time to be like these women yet she wanted to be sure her Jenny could "keep up" so she befriended some of them.
Have we as women become so numb that we no longer listen to our instincts?
It saddens me deeply to think that some of the women of our world are so concerned about their child being at the front of the line that they fail to see them for who they are rather than as another item to be managed on their blackberry.
Leave this one on the shelf and spend time directly with your child instead!

This is a REAL WORLD guide to raising your children........1999-08-23
Ms Herman takes you through pregnancy to adulthood in this all encompassing guide to raising your children to be creative, loving, and have high self esteem. This guide takes you through the REAL world along with Ms Herman as she spins examples of what has happened in her own life and how she and her children have dealt with various stages and experiences that her family has grown through. I appreciate this book for that. It is not all fluff, baby pink and blue, but it deals with life and how to live it and come out proud of your children and of YOU!
I also love the spiritual guidance that she has sprinkled throughout the book. This is not heavy handed, but given in love and it is good advice! She talks about the various spiritual lessons that one goes through in life and it is a resource that I will go back to again and again.
Overall, I would recommend and purchase this book for any parent and I have! The title itself is a stress reliever for new anxious parents and it is a hit at showers. The contents of the book reinforces that angle as it lets you know in a loving way that everyone makes mistakes and it is never too late to start correcting them for your child's sake.

Six stars!!.......2006-05-14
Richards' book on the Shays's Rebellion (or the "Regulation", as the rebels referred to it) is absolutely first rate. Six stars!
During the course of other research in the Massachusetts state archives, Richards came across a list of 4000 people who, upon participating in and losing the Shays Rebellion, had signed an oath of loyalty to the state of Massachusetts in order to be given clemency. Apparently, this list was in barely legible handwriting and had never been translated. The amazing breakthrough came when Richards decided to take this list, decipher the names, and find out who all the participants were, person by person. What he produces is a tremendously revealing and much more accurate account of the rebellion.
Through what must have been months of painstaking, dogged research Richards attempts to prove that we, today, have many misconceptions about the rebellion. Particularly, Richards makes a point that the rebels were more upset by very understandable abuses by the Boston-centered Massachusetts state government than by poverty. He also shows that the most important factor in recruiting rebels was their clan association. People joined almost exclusively as part of a clan, and this explains why some towns had widespread participation and others had minimal. He does a great job of fleshing out who the leaders and opponents were. A true local history project.
Richards also does a nice job of relating how the rebellion fit in with the national movement to form a stronger union among the states. This occurred in Philadelphia the next year at the Constitutional Convention. The rebellion played a very important part in our history that many today do not fully appreciate, and Richards does a fantastic job of putting it all together.
Last, three things. One, after reading this book I have a much better understanding of why the rural parts of the new nation feared Hamilton and his drive to strengthen Federal control. I also have a much better understanding for Hamilton's genius. You will, too. Two, I think it helps tremendously that Richards himself is a history professor based in Amherst, Massachusetts, in the heart of Shays country. You get the feeling that telling this story accurately is a labor of love for Richards, close to his heart. And three, apparently the possessive form of Shays in all the places I've seen it written is spelled "Shays's". That's right, "s's". It seems wrong, but that's how professor Richards and everyone else spell it. Go figure.
Shay's Rebellion Revisited.......2006-03-10
Do you hold dear, the Constitution of the United States? If you do, then you can thank the farmers involved in the Shay's Rebellion. This pivotal piece of early American history has been revisited by Professor Leonard L. Richards of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, in his book SHAY'S REBELLION: THE AMERICAN REVOLUTIONS FINAL BATTLE, and has brilliantly clarified some of the misconceptions revolving around the event, particularly its cause.
In previous popular belief, it has been widely held that the farmers revolted due to their being dragged into a global market, which forced them into debt. This rather simplistic view misses many crucial elements, to which Dr. Richards superbly lends enlightment. The principle causes ran much deeper than that. Primarily, the farmers were being overtaxed and forced to pay creditors at the benefit of Revolutionary War bondholders, who were typically, either members of the Massachusetts Legislature or closely related to someone who was.
Ultimately, their revolt ended up helping in the ratification of the Constitution that we enjoy today. Richard's book also gives a slant contrary to popular thought, that the farmers of the Shay's Rebellion did in fact gain victory. Though they opposed the Constitution and their rebellion was squashed, it did result in substantial tax relief from the legislature.
I was also delighted to find a cameo appearance in the book of Mumbet, aka Elizabeth Freeman, the slave who sued for her freedom. Upon the outcome of her successful lawsuit, all slaves in Massachusetts were emancipated. Her story appears in Richard's book for her part in protecting from the Regulators, the valuables of Theodore Sedgwick, for whom she worked and had also served as her legal counsel.
At just over 200 pages, this is a quick and easy read, with no fluff added to fill more pages. Richard's writes succinctly and has done a brilliant job of shedding new light on the Shay's Rebellion.

Taxes, debts, shortages of legal tender, gov structure.......2004-08-03
The revolutionary war was won leaving America the victory and states burdened with the debt to pay for the war. War notes were issued by each state to pay military men for their service. Most of these men were farmers. Because legal tender was scarce, the men exchanged their notes for hard currency with speculators willing to pay cents on the dollar. In Massachusetts, these speculators were Boston merchants; merchants, who maintained a significant influence on the political machinery and helped, formulate tax policy requiring the citizen to pay tax money used to shed state debt and interesting the notes would be paid back at original issued value.
In 1780, the notes debt were consolidated and 6 percent bonds secured against the debt and L265,000 paid to make good on the interest with the state making four installment payments. Consolidation worked to the advantage of the Boston merchants capitalized on incredible buying leverage gaining 1/40 depreciation value of the note, it was a bonanza for the speculators.
One possibility explaining Shay's rebellion was the rebels were protest unfair tax policy. When the legislature decided to pay the original value of the note rather than the purchase price, the people of Massachusetts insisted they only receive the purchase value of the note. This cry went unheard as the state earmarked L1,250,000 for the holder, L270,000 for the holders of the original note; 80 percent of the state debt made it into the hands of the speculators, who were gambling on the future; 35 men held 40 percent of the state debt; the future did not look bleak because the new tax system benefited the speculators, by 1786 the increased tax burden impacted the farmer five to six times the preexisting tax burden providing the state a property tax and a poll tax on all male 16 year olds.
The farmers wanted the state to provide more money for debt relief: the back country was in bad shape, creditors wanted the farmers to pay their debts with hard currency; the court systems had numerous layers and fees and the people felt that it needed restructuring and additionally they wanted the state constitution to be revised or a new constitution formed; the people questioned why there was a state senate claiming the existing senate was a bastion for the privileged of Boston and the political machinery being influence by the merchants to pay back the war debt.
What were the laws of debt? The confession act of 1782 required debtors to go before a justice of the peace and acknowledge their debt and avoid court costs and 790 men made 4,000 confessions. In 1654, an outgrowth of the English Common law, Debtors could be arrested for debt: 1. confined to reveal hidden debt or force relatives to pay the debt 2. Seizure of the debtor's property 3. or liquidation at "auction" price rather than fair market value to generate hard currency. The creditor paid for the debtor's jail time.
Farmers owning money got the screws as they were harassed by creditors for immediate payment of their debt. A chain of debt prevailed with almost everyone owning debt of one sort. Farmers did not expect to pay in full their debt immediately. Boston Merchants pressed for local merchants to pay. The reason for the panic was result of England closing their West Indies trade. Now, wholesalers had no way to trade out their debt. Wholesalers imported English goods and sold these goods to local merchants extending an immense credit. In 1787, the wholesalers sued the back country, who sued the farmers. In 1786, Connecticut creditor filed 60,000 suites. 1/3 of the men in court were involved in a credit dispute and 20 percent of the tax payers were taken to court. The credit pressure caused a revolt to revise or redo the state constitution and restore the republic.
Farmers were facing new taxes; notes IOUs for service that could not be used as collateral to buy land, pay debts, or be used as currency; shortages of legal tender; and a government restructuring. The state constitution was in question, the people was to abolish the upper house of the state legislature and revise the lower house to force re election of government officials each year and the lower house to set the salaries. Included in the people's demands were the abolishment of the "Court of Common Pleas" and the "General Session of Peace".
A meticulous, thoroughly researched, deftly written study.......2002-10-11
Shay's Rebellion: The American Revolution's Final Battle by Leonard L. Richards (Professor of History, University of Massachusetts) provides a detailed and scholarly look at the farmer's revolt in 1786-87 that drew General George Washington out of retirement, and ultimately forced the Articles of Confederation of a fledgling nation to be scrapped in exchange for what was to become the American Constitution. A meticulous, thoroughly researched, deftly written study of a pivotal point in American political and military history, Shays's Rebellion is very highly recommended reading for students and scholars of American History.

Book Description
On September 11, 2001 the world bit into an apple in the modern garden and acquired a troublesome new self-knowledge. The Venezuelan scholar and diplomat Alfredo Hardy explores the fault lines that led to this terrible tremor, and takes readings of the forces of history that were building under the World Trade Center. He describes the sudden emergence of 'global village' economic culture into the world of actual villages. September 11 was a senseless act but not an a-historic one, and Toro-Hardy argues convincingly, these tragedies were not merely one more confrontation between the homogenizing Western economies and the currents of traditional cultures. The plates of international order are moving under us with a fluidity that no other time has known; when they stop we will be looking at a new international order.

Book Description
The bowerbirds are confined to the great island of New Guinea and the island continent of Australia, and their immediately adjacent islands. They are medium-sized birds, omnivorous and largely solitary. They are unique in the avian world in that the males build elaborate 'bowers': structures of sticks, grasses or other plant stems on or close to the ground for display and courtship, often incorporating objects such as colourful fruits, flowers, feathers, bones, stones, shells, insect skeletons, and numerous other natural (and human-made) objects. The highly sophisticated building, decorating, collecting, arranging, thieving, singing, and courtship posturing and dancing by males is primarily to attract and impress females. As much of it is performed in the absence of females, however, some consider it possible that males may also enjoy such activities for their own sake. The bowers and the birds' behaviour associated with them have been much studied by behavioural ecologists searching for evolutionary and ecological explanations of behavioural patterns. The authors' aims include: (a) making the reader aware of the broader significance of bowerbirds to general biological studies and (b) providing references to key literature on theoretical issues. Part I contains general chapters on bowerbird evolution, behaviour, environment, demography, courtship patterns, breeding biology, and sexual selection. Part II follows with 21 species accounts, giving comprehensive information on the birds in their natural state, including distribution maps and sonographs. Complementing the species accounts are superb colour plates by Eustace Barnes, especially commissioned for this volume. The Bowerbirds, like its companions in the series, is an indispensable work of reference for everyone interested in birds.
