Book Description
The first comprehensive examination of the cinematographer's art, Making Pictures presents incisive analyses of 100 visually stunning films-radical classics like Battleship Potemkin (1925), Jules et Jim (1965), and The Elephant Man (1980)-along with a complete technical and creative history of the cameraperson's unique craft. Illustrated with 500 images in both color and black-and-white, it features a wealth of location shots and expository stills. Contributions by such seminal figures as director Bernardo Bertolucci, actor Marcello Mastroianni, and Ingmar Bergman's long-term collaborator, cinematographer Sven Nykvist, make this a unique study.
This remarkable book examines 100 European films that represent the art of cinematography at its best; they were specially chosen by a panel of cinematographers to represent either technical or creative mastery by the cameraman. This book will be an essential reference for all film students and cinematographers.
Customer Reviews:
An Inspirational Book.......2006-04-17
This is such an inspirational book, and a must for any aspiring cinematographer and those with a real interest in cinema. It covers the history of Europeon cinematography and is wonderfully illustrated. At the beginning there are pieces from Jack Cardiff, Sven Nykvist, Guiseppe Rotunno and Bernardo Bertolucci.
One of the things I liked best about this book are the pieces on the 100 different top rated films. For each film we are given the story and this is told with the emphasis on how the film was shot, how light was used and how effects were created. It outlines each cinematographers approach. It made me want to watch all 100 of these films.
At the end there is a large section on 'Tools of the Trade' describing many different camera systems, lighting and filters and the history of many great camera companies, among others Panavision, Auri, Kodak, Fuji and Aaton. This is a truly fascinating book. Christie Barraclough
A "must have" book.......2006-01-26
Sometimes, seeing a movie is not enough for photographers. Sometimes it is better to freeze everything around us, and take the time one wants to admire a beautiful composition, or lighting or an unforgettable face. This is what I found in this book. As if it wasn't enough, it has the most interesting information about the cinematographers who achieved all this in the most sublime stage of cinematic art. I encourage all of you, interested or practicing photography to buy this book, You will never regret it.
A must buy for Cinematographers!.......2005-05-28
An extraordinary book on many levels. It examines in surprisingly great detail the cinematography on over 100 films by Bergman, Fellini, Kubrick, Lean to name a just a few. The gorgeous accompanying stills from the films and also of the DP's setting up shots sealed the deal for me.

President Bush' gift........2005-07-07
When president George W. Bush July 5th and 6th 2005 visited Denmark he brought with him a present to the Danish prime minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen. It was "The Texas Cowboys".
Capturing the Texas Cowboy.......2002-10-16
This is a book of superlative photography, capturing the essence of the Texas cowboy and his life--the dirt, the work, the gear, the animals, the life. Stoecklein has a love for the West that dances joyously through his work.
If you liked Lonesome Dove you'll love The Texas Cowboy!.......1998-09-29
This is Mr. Stoecklein's finest work to date! Through his camera lens were able to get a close up view of the life of a Texas Cowboy and his natural surrondings. What is most interesting about this photo essay is that it shows the diversity of Texas and how the cowboys have adapted to the land. One of my best friends is a Cowboy from Pampa, Texas and he went nuts for this book. Full of beautiful photography and illustrations, and imformative text, this is a must for anybody who shares a passion for the American West and what it stands for.

Customer Reviews:
CRIME IN THE AFTERLIFE.......2006-07-31
When high school student Suh Rin seeks shelter from a rainstorm in a cozy little diner called Cafe Occult she cannot realize that she will be visiting it again after she is dead! Cafe Occult is a place where the human and the spirit worlds exist on the same dimensional plane. You would think that after you're dead that you would go to Heaven or Hell or at least you would learn about all the mysteries that are unknown to living beings. I hate to rain on your parade, but the spirit world is exactly the same as the living one! People look just the same. They still need to eat, sleep, etc. The city looks just the same, except that there happen to be spirits. Unfortunately, crime also exists among the spirits. You would think that dead people would be above such things, but there are actually ghost gangs that prey on newly dead spirits like Suh Rin. It doesn't help that she is labeled as a "special" spirit and so is even more highly sought after. Luckily for her the owner of Cafe Occult is in the business of helping out such spirits and employs Young, a John Waynesque Crow-like warrior that packs a cross-shaped pistol that fires "Holy Inverse" bullets. Will he be able to keep Suh Rin from being taken captive?
The plot point that I really had a problem with was the whole afterlife theory we have in Cafe Occult. How boring it is to think that after we die, we just continue hanging out in the semblance of a human life. Who wants to die and still have to deal with paying bills and worrying about being victims of crime? I mean, where's the tension in it? If you get shot, you'll just come back as a spirit again. How can you die if you're already dead? So what do any of these battles really mean? Another thing is it's hard to figure out who is alive and who is a spirit. The characters are pretty stereotypical and none of them really grabs your attention. The art is ok but the premise of the afterlife and the lack of characterization banishes this book to the below average category.

Henry R. Luce, Time, and the American Crusade in Asia
ASIN: 0801867169 |
Book Description
In this concise biography of the twentieth century's most influential magazine publisher, James L. Baughman describes Henry R. Luce's career and assesses his lasting contributions to American journalism. In 1923, Luce founded Time, an innovative magazine that revolutionized the news media. He went on to start such magazines as Fortune, Life, and Sports Illustrated. Baughman challenges the widely held assumption that Luce wielded extraordinary political power through his publications. His real significance in American history, Baughman concludes, lay instead in his impact on the press. Even as new technologies transform journalism once again, Luce's legacy continues to influence how the news is reported and understood. In a new afterword, Baughman chronicles the history of Time Inc. since its mergers with Warner and AOL.
Book Description
For most people, life comes down to a daily chore of pile management. But for a traveler like Ted Lerner, life often revolves around dealing with gate checkers. Gate checkers? Yes, those people given a badge, a stamp and the authority to stop you from getting where you want to go. In this his second book, the American author of the hilarious Philippine adventure, "Hey, Joe," takes to the road in the gate checker capital of the world, Asia. No matter the obstacles, though, Lerner never fails to uncover the juicy stories and one-of-a-kind experiences which can only be found in the world's largest and most populated continent. From the sheer madness, and brilliance, of tortuously crowded India, to the wildly popular and barbaric realm of Japanese professional wrestling, to high class Hong Kong and its notorious, low down landmark, to jaded Thailand and untouched Laos and, finally, revisiting the teeming and seedy heart of Manila, this collection of five original tr! avel tales will bring you decidedly off the beaten path, roaming as few foreigners dare, on journeys as unique as the countries themselves. Part travelogue, part reportage, part outrageously good fun, with everything from sex to death and all the colorful life in between, Ted Lerner's The Traveler and the Gate Checkers presents a fresh and unusual version of Asia. So open your heart and mind and get ready for the ride. But remember; watch out for those gate checkers!
Customer Reviews:
Traveling with Ted Lerner.......2007-01-05
After having finished reading 'Hey, Joe' by Ted Lerner I felt compelled to purchase another writing by this author. I'm glad I did for 'The Traveler and thge Gate Checkers' is really a good read. Well written, richer than the first book, Ted lerner takes us into the heart and soul of the places he visits. You can just feel the heat rising from the plains of India as the crushing noise of the wheels hammer on the tracks of the train he and his wife, Au are traveling on as Ted leans out between cars desperately seeking respite from the madness inside. Ted Lerner's ability at describing the experience, what a person must deal with and how he copes and absorbs his surroundings is a delight. You really grow to appreciate the journey these two are on, and Ted's ability to wrap up a section with some poignant humour or a funny remark from Au are wonderful.

Book Description
At the beginning of World War II, Prince Junio Valerio Borghese, dashing Italian nobleman, assembled the famous Decima MAS naval unit-the first modern naval commando squad. Borghese's "frogmen" were trained to fight undercover and underwater with small submarines and assault boats armed with a variety of destructive torpedoes. The covert tactics he and the Decima MAS developed, including the use of midget submarines, secret nighttime operations, and small teams armed with explosives, have become a standard for special forces around the world to this very day. After the Italian capitulation in 1943, Borghese determinedly fought on as a Fascist commando leader. After the war, he became a man of mystery, variously said to be involved with several right-wing conspiracies, abortive coups, and clandestine activity. The Prince's death in 1974 was every bit as mysterious as his life. Greene and Massignani have drawn upon official archives as well as information from Allied and Axis veterans in an unprecedented attempt to separate fact from fantasy in this detailed examination of Borghese, the Decima MAS, and the Italian naval special forces.
Customer Reviews:
The story of Prince Valerio Borghese .......2004-09-08
Jack Greene and Alessandro Massignani's The Black Prince And The Sea Devils is the story of Prince Valerio Borghese and his infamous World War II Italian naval commando unit will intrigue any with a special interest in World War II history beyond the generalist topics and scope. Green has authored four previous military titles and Massignani brings with him a special focus on Italian naval history: the two draw upon official archival sources and veteran accounts on both sides to separate fact from fantasy.
Before There Were SEALS, SAS, or Special Forces........2004-07-02
Every major military in the world has it's special elite units. The British have their SAS. The Americans the SEALS, Rangers, and Special Forces. Strangely enough, this trend began with the Italian Navy. Their Decima MAS unit pioneered the concept of small, specially trained units that did damage to their enemies far beyond their size. Movie buffs will recognize their exploits as shown in the 1958 movie 'The Silent Enemy' where frogmen attack the HMS Valiant and the HMS Queen Elizabeth using specially modified torpedoes that they ride into the harbour.
It is nice to see that the Italian military is portrayed here as something other than the bumbling fools so often shown in American films and books. This book treats the unit as they would any other unit, telling how it got started, their training, their failures and their successes. This book is also the basis for a new movie called 'The Sea Devils' although I understand that the project is now on hold.
