    Book Description

Art Deco buildings, with their highly ornate facades and dramatic forms, are a vital part of our surroundings. The movie theaters, hotels, apartment blocks, and other landmarks of the twenties and thirties preserve the visual identity of this unmistakable style in towns and cities the world over. This exploration of Art Deco architectural design embraces many different times and places in its visual and verbal account of the movement's origins, development, and influence. Various types of architecture, the author explains, were termed Art Deco, and their antecedents were mixed and often surprising: Arts and Crafts, fin-de-sicle Vienna, Cubism, Expressionism, and the Bauhaus. Art Deco's sheer exuberance ensured its success across the globe, and it adapted to the most diverse situations, as shown by examples ranging from offices in Europe and gas stations in America to maharajahs' palaces in India and imperial dwellings in Japan. Public buildings of all kinds--whether fountain or state capitol, skyscraper or bus terminal--bear witness to its decades of popularity. Despite its historic pedigree, Art Deco design is very much alive today. Post-modernism has borrowed its repertoire of motifs and idioms to produce what, in some cases, amounts to a full-blown revival. Many of the original buildings still survive, now restored to their former glory, to be admired and enjoyed. Sumptuously illustrated, this unrivaled study provides a comprehensive guide to the best loved of all twentieth-century architectural styles.

Jack, as wonderfully irrelevant as he can be, is a mentor, a friend, and, most importantly, an example to live by. Not only does he teach by example, he teaches by quiet mentoring and suggestion. After studying under him for a mere four months, I found myself drawn to ceramics as an art form, a mode of self expression, and, most importantly, a passion through which to put my Self into solid being. Through Jack's teaching I was not only able to define my own artistic style but also to discover the multiple venues through which I could express my Self. I strongly suggest this and all his works as a mode through which to hone your own particular style and art form, may it be through glaze, firing, or sculpture.

                  Book Description

Tibet was once home to thousands of thriving Buddhist monasteries. But in 1959, following a Tibetan uprising against China's long occupation, nearly all were destroyed by the Chinese military, the practice of Buddhism was outlawed, and the Dalai Lama was forced into exile. In March of that year, Chinese tanks bombarded the 540-year-old Sera Jey Monastery in Lhasa, Tibet, killing hundreds of monks and destroying ancient texts and invaluable artifacts that had been collected over centuries. Thousands of survivors fled over perilous mountain passes to neighboring India, many with only thin robes and light footwear to shield them from the harsh winter conditions of the Himalayas.

The Sera Jey Monastery, reestablished near Mysore, India, now houses 5,000 Buddhist monks living in exile-including many who escaped the attack on the Tibetan monastery in 1959, and many more who have never known their ancestral homeland. Providing an intimate glimpse of this rarely seen world, Sera: The Way of the Tibetan Monk evokes the subtle moods and rhythms of this Buddhist community that has steadfastly carried on the legacy of the original Sera Jey. More than 100 duotone photographs capture daily rituals and sacred ceremonies, serious moments and playful gestures, compassionate faces and expressions of inspired serenity. Moving and unforgettable, Sheila Rock's portraits celebrate the tranquility, simple joys, and unadorned beauty of the ascetic life, offering a powerful testament to the strength and resilience of a persecuted people.

A percentage of the royalties from this book go to the Sera Jhe Health Care Committee in aid of various humanitarian projects

                      Book Description

Kicking off a new series of books from Fantasy Flight Games, SCHOOL OF ILLUSION contains everything you need to make illusion magic a key component of your game.

Featuring more than 60 new spells including the mind-twisting might of apocalypse, SCHOOL OF ILLUSION brings the concept of divine domains to arcane spellcasters in the form of "disciplines." Illusionists can now master invisibility, terror, true illusion, and six other disciplines on their path to ultimate power. Best of all, the visual guide to illusions shows at a glance which senses a spell affects.

This book also contains 9 new prestige classes and a new core class - the devoted illusionist. In addition, it contains dozens of new items - both magical and mundane - to delight players. Whether you're customizing your very own illusionist's robe or wielding the awesome might of the staff of the illusionist, you'll never look at illusion magic the same way again.

                      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great book but very short.......2004-06-01

me start off by saying that the prestige classes and general information included in this volume are well thought out and a pleasan change of pace. The new spells included in "School of Illusion" are fun and sync well with the prestige classes offered in the book. The spells are also original and not just simple knock off's of existing magic. Thats said I do have a few complaints -really just gripes - 1. The book is way to short, take out the useless "Visual guide to illusions section" which has no real use other than to take up page space and he book is only 55 pages long. I don't know why current gaming coumpanies feel that they can publish a book this short and still charge $14.95 for it when non-gaming books well over 400 pages sell for the same price-its realy disapointing to see. 2.The above mention "visual guide to illusions section" is such a ploy at filler its a joke. Five pages of charts for no reason. Fantasy Flight Games should make a compendium out of all of their School "of" books and quit selling these tiny little single school books. Ok, I am over that now. If you can get past the high price for small book thing the info is usefull, the magic items are unique and the prestige classes fun-my favorites are the Master of the Unseen and the Devoted Illusionist. Hope this help. Jake (JK)

Having lived aboard a sailboat for several years, Migael Scherer had never before raced over water. So when an invitation came to join a six-person crew on a race, she said yes. Three years prior, Scherer's life had almost ended in a violent, near-fatal rape; the race becomes a personal voyage of recovery. She addresses the wonders and horrors, beauty and dangers of both the natural and “civilized” world. Throughout, she keeps an account of the race and its intricacies with the knowledge of a seasoned sailor and the freshness of a novice racer. Photographs and her story illuminate Scherer's successful struggle to recapture her love of life.

the author had a gift for "Painting with words." I found this to be a wonderful, touching true story of one woman's relation to the sea, her husband, and the world around her. So very different from the typical "cruising the world" stories.

Written by a survivor of a traumatic and life-threatening sexual assault, Migael Scherer's Back Under Sail: Recovering The Spirit Of Adventure is about restoring a passion for experiencing life after having to endure unspeakable atrocity. Blending the challenges of learning to work with a skilled racing crew with the sometimes painful recovery from physical and emotional trauma, Back Under Sail is a powerful and life-affirming personal testimony. Edited and annotated by Charles M. Robinson (history instructor at South Texas Community College and a fellow of the Texas State Historical Association), The Diaries Of John Gregory Bourke: Volume Two: July 29, 1876-April 7, 1878 is the next published installment of the personal journals of John Gregory Bourke who served as cavalry lieutenant in Arizona from 1872 up to the evening before his death in 1896. A noted ethnologist who wrote extensive descriptions of Native American tribal life and customs that he observed first hand, he illustrated his diaries with both sketches and photographs. This second published volume opens as General Crook prepares for the expedition that would lead to his infamous and devastating Horse Meat March. The diary faithfully recounts the manifold hardships the troops and their officers endured. The diary then continues with the story of the Powder River Expedition and culminates in Bourke's eyewitness description of Colonel Ranald MacKenzie's destruction of the main Cheyenne camp in what become known as the Dull Knife Fight. With the main hostile chiefs either surrendering or forced into exile in Canada, field operations came to a close and Bourke finishes this second volume of his memoirs with a retrospective of his service in Tucson, Arizona. Enhanced for the modern reader with extensive annotations and a biographical appendix on Indians, civilians, and military personnel named in the diaries, this outstanding series continues to be a seminal and strongly recommended contribution to American Frontier History and Native American Studies reference collections and supplementary reading lists.

                                Book Description

Before he became a professional architect, Christopher Wren had a highly successful career as an astronomer - he was Savilian Professor of Astronomy at Oxford University - and he was actively involved in many branches of the science or â€~natural philosophy’ of his day. This side of his career has, until now, been neglected by historians and biographers, and has been regarded as distinct and separate. This book contains the first detailed account of Wren’s natural philosophy and, in addition, after showing that â€~science’ and â€~architecture’ were not then distinct in the way we understand them today, it presents a new perspective on Wren’s architectural philosophy. The book will be of value to anyone interested in the history of science or of architecture.
