Photographic excellence and good choice of subject.......2007-03-16
The pix of Punta del Este homes are really superb. The essence of beachfront living--free, earthy, close to the sun, sea, and sand is brought out. You see not only the homes but the views from the homes. One caveat: You have got to love waterfront living. This is not a book of architectural plans for second homes in general. It evokes the essence of the lifestyle of the waterfront. Kudos to Amazon for catering to us architectural and waterscape specialists.

Instructional and Inspirational - Zoltan Szabo's New Book.......2000-07-21
As a beginning painter I am always searching for instructional books to help me master watercolor techniques. Zoltan Szabo's books provide not only excellent instruction in the medium, but inspire as well. This new book is no exception. In "Watercolor Basics:Trees, Mountains, and Rocks" his explanations are easy to understand and follow, and he provides the palette of colors used in each step-by-step example, which many instructional books fail to do. I find reproducing his examples gives excellent practice in both color mixing and varied techniques, which carry over to one's own work. My favorite subjects to paint are those covered in this book, so I am delighted now to have this great reference book. Mr. Szabo is not only a great painter, but a great teacher, and his books are to be treasured.

Customer Reviews:
Growing up in Hawaii.......2007-03-26
This book really captures the flavor of what it was like growing up in Hawaii in the 1960s and 70s. The tiniest details bring back memories for me. It's written the way people really talk in Hawaii. The funny stories, like "J'Like Ten Thousand" are hilarious. I don't know what someone who didn't grow up in Hawaii would think of this book, but if you're Local, you'll understand.
Darrel Lum lends authority to Hawaiian pidgin English........1997-08-01
Darrel Lum is the writer usually credited with giving modern Hawaiian pidgin English the authority to speak loudly and proudly in polite company. Stories like "No Pass Back" and "Toads" from this volume and "Beer Can Hat" and "Primo Doesn't Take Back Bottles Anymore" from his earlier SUN volume clearly demonstrate why he is so popular with readers. I'd recommend that people who are not "tuned-in" to Hawaiian pidgin also purchase his taped reading of these Island classics. Mr. Lum is an accomplished reader much in demand. Especially good for high school and middle school English classes doing units on the use of dialect in literature, these stories compare favorably to the best dialectal works of Mark Twain

Customer Reviews:
At the end, another fine biography.......2003-04-14
ýAll Said and Doneý by Simone de Beauvoir is the final of five volumes of de Beauvoirýs autobiography, and is different from those that precede it, which basically progress on a chronological basis. This book is arranged thematically, and de Beauvoir picks up a theme or area of her life, addresses it for the 10 years that the book focuses on, 1962 to 1972. Early in the volume, she addresses books sheýs read, movies, theater productions, etc. A particularly interesting chapter focuses on the deaths of some of the people she has known, including Sartreýs mother and de Beauvoirýs close friend, Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti. While these sections have interesting moments, the brief time she spends on each book, movie, or production and the shortness of the sections isnýt a very engaging read. The discussion is really a gloss, and feels a little obligatory on de Beauvoirýs part.
The book really picks up in pace and interest when de Beauvoir moves on to address the travels sheýs taken in these ten years toward the end of her life (she died in 1986). She first goes through trips she made for fun, with Sartre or on her own. Then she addresses trips they took for primarily political reasons, to Egypt, to Israel, to Russia, Estonia, etc. Sheýs always a very engaging travel writer as she has a deep knowledge of the places sheýs traveling, and, often ý especially on the political trips ý she and Sartre are given guides and access to things one might not be able to see on oneýs own.
Toward the end of the book, she writes about her feelings about the Vietnam War, going into some detail about two tribunals that worldwide intelligentsia held to try the United States for war crimes in Vietnam, particularly for genocide (the United States was found guilty). De Beauvoir was very against Franceýs actions in Algeria, and she now turned her attention toward what she felt was a violation of the rights of the Vietnamese for self-determination to make a statement with her colleagues on their political situation.
This book was illuminating of de Beauvoirýs character in a rather new way. Toward the end, she emerged to me as something of an ideologue, rather than a woman who was committed to certain principles that she addressed issue by issue. When the students took over the Sorbonne in the late 1960s, she supported their actions because it was to overthrow the status quo; the students wanted more control of their studies, they wanted to abolish the class system between students and faculty and they didnýt want to have to accept professorsý edicts. She seems, from this book, to believe that any system that is very long held should be overthrown on that point alone. She was disappointed when she and other editors at Les Temps moderne offered the rebellious students an opportunity to write for their political review and the student leaders turned them down because their publication had become an institution (it was too long standing). She does not comment on this.
Also in the late 1960s, de Beauvoir and Sartre officially broke with the Soviet Union, which they had supported as part of the noncommunist left for some time, because of its actions in Czechoslovakia. While de Beauvoir constantly ridiculed the United States for its imperialism, up until this time, even after visiting Estonia and Lithuania after they were controlled by the U.S.S.R., she did not criticize the Soviet government. But after the Prague Spring was crushed, she and Sartre had to admit that they were not pleased with the ýthought-policeý actions of the Soviets and their interpretation of the communist party. She also laments that Marx is so disregarded in the U.S.S.R. by the time of this volume, that there is no longer any one there who can speak with authority on Marxist theory or philosophy.
I really enjoyed this volume, for its differences with its sister volumes, and for what it reveals about de Beauvoir. I recommend it, and think it could certainly stand on its own.

Book Description
Marita Dachsel's debut collection is a visceral exploration of the moments of life that stand out in the pages of a family album and the intervals of memory.
She playfully and poignantly documents first crushes, first times, weddings and trips across town, across water, and across continents. Dachsel perceptively sprinkles these moments with the details photographs don't reveal, as in "Dispatches from an Impending Marriage": Don't talk to me about photographers./ Nothing will capture this. A printed paper/ will only mock--/ a gaudy misrepresentation/ a plastic jesus on the mantle--/ two dimensions of fabric, teeth and skin.

Unbelievable-a living Atlas.......2002-11-17
I told myself it was unbelievable this guy went around the world as many times as he proclaims, especially when I read his commentary, then I reviewed his pictures with his one on the back cover to make sure he was the same person, he is a living Atlas, I think he's been around the world over 20-times.

Book Description
After long years of studying sources and literature, Werner Haupt presents the military history of one of the larger theaters of World War II. The completion of the history of "Army Group North" is the result of the author's utilization of all German and Russian literature, as well as those combat diaries and documents of the committed troop units that are available in German archives. In addition, the author was assisted in clearing up several questions by the advice of former members of the army group - from commanders to drivers. This series by Werner Haupt will continue with a volume each on Army Group Center and Army Group South. The author served in the German Army as a soldier and officer in the northern sector of the Eastern Front during the Second World War. He is also the author of Assault on Moscow - 1941 (available from Schiffer Publishing Ltd.)., 45 b/w photographs, 3 maps, 6" x 9"
Customer Reviews:
Very Detail oriented.......2007-07-29
This review applies to the series (Army Group North, Center, South)
These books are good in their own way, but are not for everyone.
First, the scope of the book is large, but it describes happenings on the length of the sector of the front through the division and battalion level. This is quite interesting as you feel you are following individual units in movement.
For those who are unfamiliar with the broader narrative of the battles of the eastern front in which the detail of this book takes place, you might want to read a more holistic book, like David Glantz's When Titans Clashed, which is probably the Eastern Front bible.
The beauty of these books is in their status and divisional and battalion reports, which convey the daily carnage of the eastern front.
The war in the northern sector of the Russian Front.......2002-12-01
Over all, this is a good book if one wants to gain an understanding of the movements of the various units of the Wehrmacht in the northern sector of the Russian Front. One thing that is largely lacking from the book--and which happens to be an interest of mine--is the activities that were going on behind the front lines. The book is also without notations and an index, both most useful things for those who want to do some further research into something that is discussed in the book.
Excelente descripcion.......2001-07-14
A good look at the Eastern Front.......1998-07-04
Army Group Center is a useful reference for the force it describes. I must note that due to wide line spacing it contains a bit less content than its 356 page length would indicate. However, it does comprehensively describe the operations of German armies, corps, divisions, and occasionally regiments and lower, throughout the war. Soviet fronts and armies are also covered, but not as thoroughly, and the political/strategic elements that influenced operations are included in a balanced fashion. There are several appendixes (untranslated from the German) which provide useful organizational data, but no index.
