Book Description
Alexander Brodsky and Ilya Utkin are the best known of a loosely organized group of Soviet artists known as "Paper Architects," who designed much but built little in the early days of Glasnost, in the late 1980s. Many of their elaborate etchings, in which they depicted outlandish, often impossible, structures and cityscapes of allegorical content, were collected in our 1990 book Brodsky & Utkin. Now, with the addition of forty-three new and never-before-published prints, we are pleased to announce this updated edition.
In their designs, by turns funny, cerebral, and deeply human, Brodsky & Utkin borrow from Egyptian tombs, Ledoux's visionary architecture, Le Corbusier's urban master palns, and other historical precedents, collaging these heterogeneous forms in learned and layered scrambles. Underlying the wit and visual inventiveness is an unmistakable moral: that the dehumanizing architecture of the sort seen in Russian cities in the 1980s and 1990s, and elsewhere around the globe, takes a sinister toll.
A new preface assesses the works of Brodsky & Utkin and reminds us that the greatest art is often born of adversity. Beautifully printed in 300-screen dry-trap duotones by the Steinhauer Press, Brodsky & Utkin is a book for artists, architects, and collectors alike.

Customer Reviews:
Drab lay-outs, but good basic info.......2006-07-29
I'm creating a Heritage album (a long and loving process) and bought several books and mags including this one. BKB provides much sound info re: researching familyinfo and buying basic supplies, but her lay-outs are soooooo boring and depressing - just uninspired! Neither do I like the oddly popular "10,000 themes" lay-outs!! -- too many embellishments and the photo and story get lost, but BKB's examples would never make you want to review her album a second time. She also doesn't deal w/the challenges posed by being a 1st or 2nd generation American and not being able to easily access foregin family records, and how to lay-out pages when you don't have photos (note - do more creative journaling).
Instead I would recommend special issues of Memory Makers (e.g., Sept 2003 "Heritage scrapbook ideas," Memory Makers "Creating Heritage Scrapbooks," and some issues (read before you buy!) of Legacy magazine.
For Genealogists, Scrapbookers & Family Historians.......2005-04-21
Most of us have those stashs of old report cards, faded photos, locks of hair tied with a ribbon, and yellowing marriage certificates from other generations. This book gives ideas for pulling those items together in a meaningful album.
The author covers the needed supplies (choice of album, papers, decorative touches) and the pros and cons of each. Journaling is explained and the ways to present your information, documenting the sources and show off your family heritage.
It's a lovely book to get you started or to give to your family genealogist. They will be thrilled with the ideas for preserving and presenting your family memorabilia along with this history.
At the back are helpful forms for a family tree and to track your research. There you also find 3 pages of genealogy resources, 3 pages of scrapbooking resources, a list of websites, and a glossary to help with unfamiliar terms.
Great for those interested in genealogy and scrapbooking........2005-02-15
As someone who does both genealogy and scrapbooking this book is full of ideas. The ideas given in this book are both simple but yet elegant at times, something that I like.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is into genealogy and wishes to preserve and show off their family photos, stories and heritage.
A complete heritage album resource........2003-10-17
There are already two very good reviews of this book here at Amazon, but I wanted to stress to potential buyers that this is a COMPLETE heritage album resource. This is NOT the kind of book you usually find on this topic -- not only just a book of layouts.
If you've been debating about starting scrapbooking as a hobby and are looking at taking it up to document all your old attic finds, this is the book you want to read. The author begins with a straight-forward introduction to scrapbooking, and shows you the plusses and minuses of various techniques.
If you've toyed with the idea of starting to document your family history past what you already know, this is also a good beginner's resource. She goes on to explain the basics of genealogy and provides several helpful and necessary blank forms for starting your family search.
Not to forget that the meat of this book is devoted to creating your own family history album, and all the special considerations this particular kind of scrapbooking raises. Just what to do with all those antique photos, certificates and clippings, anyway?
This is a very detailed look at the heritage themed scrapbook; plenty of illustrated examples, a friendly DIY read, and I know it helped me figure out just what I wanted to do with all my own family treasures!
Disappointment.......2001-01-22
I was disappointed by this book. I had hoped to find ideas for page layouts and designs, but instead found only repetitive, unimaginative pages. While it did what it said it would do in terms of covering the basics of heritage scrapbooking, it also perpetuated the misconception that heritage pages are boring.

Fresh scrapbooking ideas.......2007-09-24
I bought this book because of the wide variety of scrapbook techinques especially dealing with antiquing and aging scrapbook pages. I was surprised by the number of good ideas on how to scrapbook my grandparents.
Good book with some interesting ideas-.......2007-08-31
This is a very nicely put together book. The layouts are interesting and the ideas for scrapbooking your families history through photos and memorabilia are easy to manage. The author is knowledgable and you can really make some lovely looking pages with her suggestions and ideas. Not the best book on this subject, but certainly worth the price!

Although I've been taking pictures for a long time, I've recently started taking photography classes. Macro photography is of great interst to me. This book has been very instrumental answering questions and giving pointers for the macro photography.
My favorite book on close-ups!.......2006-06-15
This is one of my all time favorite books on close-up photography. Nancy and Michael's work is wonderful and I enjoy reading this book often. Their work shows us a whole new world that we may have never realized was there. Their love of the beauty found in the smallest details and the tiniest of creatures shines through in this book. It inspires me to do better photography. The book is well thought out and put together, as well as beautiful to look at. It covers not just the technical aspects of photography, but also the creative process required in this art. It is a very worthwhile purchase. I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to take their photography to the next level. Between this book and John Shaw's "Closeups in Nature" you are set to go!
How To Photograph Close-Ups in Nature.......2000-07-08
I love this book! I love Nancy's approach to her craft! She knows how to shoot beautiful images technically but she also helps you to see and experiance what is going on around you. Michael and Nancy present information that is understandable, usable, and motivational. The book is filled with inspirational images that make you want to pick up your camera and experiment! A very worthwhile book that will sit well next to the John Shaw classic, "Closeups in Nature".

Vol.24: SM Special (ouch!).......2001-09-06
All the stories this volume focus on SM, which probably will turn on some more than usual while making it too disturbing for others. So it goes!
Highlights includes Zack's 3rd story in 3 issues, the 30-page "Slaves To Lust"; John Blackburn's Coley in "Baitbucket"; Stepan Zubinski's "In The Kingdom Of The Snake God", featuring some of the most stunning artwork in the book, wherein a downed biplane pilot in Africa confronts sexual and supernatural forces head-on (so to speak!); and more cartoons from Gerard Donelan. The rest I could do without, but that's about average for this series. 2 noticeable glitches found their way into this volume: Zubinski's story has pages 3 & 4 reversed, and Blackburn's story ends rather abruptly after only 12 pages. The reason, as I suspected-- it was supposed to be 20 pages (as most Coley episodes in MEATMEN have been) but the editor apparently objected to something, causing some changes. Geez, in a specifically "SM" issue, I wonder WHAT was considered as possibly "going too far"?

Book Description
The key role of intellectuals in Mao's China has confounded Western scholars. Were they potential dissidents or actual servants of Chinese communism? The Chinese Communist Party could not have taken over China or governed it without a coalition of forces that included the intellectuals who articulated its goals and administered its complex bureaucracy. Deng Tuo (1912-66) - founding editor of People's Daily, accomplished traditional scholar, and critical commentator on political issues - has served as an example of this confusion. His life illustrates an experience of intellectual service in Mao's China that contributes to our understanding of the rise, successes, and major crises of Chinese Marxism in the twentieth century. It also introduces us to the world that produced the current generation of intellectual leaders in China. This biography is a social history of intellectuals as agents in China's socialist revolution. It places Deng Tuo's writings and ideas in rich context of his social experience as a member of the Communist bureaucracy and as an elite artist and aesthete. The tension between service to politics and service to culture was ultimately disastorous for Deng and for China's revolution: his ghost haunts the halls of power in Beijing today.

Book Description
For God's Sake reveals the simplicity of God through the experiences of a seven year journey. My earthly travels took me from deserts to mountaintops to ocean shores. I traveled in spirit to the Garden of Heaven, a star and through many realms of God. Glimmers of the power, the magic of God were daily by way of visitations, visions, and voices. These experiences taught me to view life more through the eye of God, my soul, so I would love more life.

"For God's Sake".......2006-01-23
I thorougly enjoyed this book and appreciated the simplicity of the text. Many of the books I have read in this genre are written with a lot of convoluted dialogue. This book was very easy to understand. I found Ms Sharp's journy to be very intriguing and enlightening.

Book Description
An epic story of one man’s devotion to the American cause
In October 1776, four years before Benedict Arnold’s treasonous attempt to hand control of the Hudson River to the British, his patch-work fleet on Lake Champlain was all that stood between British forces and a swift end to the American rebellion.
Benedict Arnold’s Navy is the dramatic chronicle of that desperate battle and of the extraordinary events that occurred on the American Revolution’s critical northern front. Written with captivating narrative vitality, this landmark book shows how Benedict Arnold’s fearless leadership against staggering odds in a northern wilderness secured for America the independence that he would later try to betray.
Praise for James L. Nelson:
"James Nelson is a master both of his period and of the English language."
--Patrick O'Brian, author of Master and Commander
"James L. Nelson tells this story with clarity and literary skill and with such ease and order that the reader feels he is attending a dissertation on history given by a consummate lecturer."
--Ron Berthel, Associated Press, on Reign of Iron: The Story of the First Battling Ironclads, winner of the American Library Association’s 2004 Award for Best Military History
"It is, by far, the best Civil War novel I’ve read; reeking of battle, duty, heroism and tragedy. It’s a triumph of imagination and good, taut writing . . . "
--Bernard Cornwell on Glory in the Name, winner of the W. Y. Boyd Literary Award
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding - A Must Read!!.......2007-08-12
This outstanding narrative documents the Battle of Valcour island but it is much more. My 9 year old recently asked about Benedict Arnold and I replied with the standard dogma of "Arnold the traitor". This book has caused me to revise that narrow view. Benedict Arnold was one of the greatest military commanders of his day. Had he remained true to the Cause, history would have remembered Arnold in the same breath as George Washington. I was amazed by Arnold's heroic determination to defend and establish the American ideal - even as the Continental Congress seemed determined to let the dream slip away. Congrats to James L. Nelson for an outstanding book that is a must read for Revolutionary era fans!!
Nelson is the Master.......2007-08-11
I met James Nelson two years ago at a book signing at Colonial Williamsburg. I purchased one of his books on that occasion and have since read everything he has written to date. He is a master weaver of stories and a master historian. His work is refreshing and spellbiinding. I heartily recommend Benedict Arnold's Navy. It offers an eye-opening look at the Revolutionary War era from both land and sea (or lake, as the case may be).
Much Much More than the title implies.......2007-06-14
I had the pleasure of purchasing the book from the author while taking part in the 225th Yorktown Reenactment last year. I thought the these of the book was interesting and unique. As a result, i felt it should be worth adding to my collection. What i got, was much more than I could have ever hoped.
The book provides one of the best and detailed accounts of the initial taking of Fort Ticonderoga by Arnold and Allen. The book details the make up of the men that were present and not just centering on the leaders themselves.
The work goes into detail regarding the invasion of Canada in 1775, the portion on the western attack may be the best and most in debth coverage ever given. While the book is not the first to cover Arnold's march to Quebec, it may be one of the first to so detail the other half of the invasion and the fights that took place there.
In the end, the book does cover the retreat from Canada and the building of the Navies on the lake. The detailed descriptions of the ships involved was very well worth the read.
The great dramatic detail in the work gives you the feel of reading a novel, but for the notes detailing the sources betraying it as a non-fiction book. Of course, this simply means that a work of non-fiction can be every bit as exciting as a work of fiction...that is what sets Nelson a part.
If you are greatly interested in filling your shelf with an easy read that would give you plenty of information on a part of the war most histories forget (1776 outside of Washington v Howe) this is the book to do it. Buy the book, read the book and keep it. This will be the main source on the subject matter for years to come.
Read Kenneth Roberts for the novels on this topic.......2007-05-17
Anyone who wants to read classics on Arnolds exploits during this period should read Kenneth Roberts' Arundel and Rabble in Arms.
A History.......2007-05-15
Unlike many other novels by James L. Nelson, "Benedict Arnold's Navy" is truly a history, not an historical novel. It seems well written but lacks the excitement of his other novels.

The Royals.......2006-02-27
An extremely contoversial book but certainly an eye opener. All those things one thought were true appear to be confirmed. Even things we hadn't heard of were written in such a way that they even changed our opinion of some of the royals. Now I understand why it was banned in the UK.
A must read - you won't be able to put it don't.
