Book Description

Among nomadic peoples, round-shaped homes, echoing natural forms, have sheltered families since the dawn of recorded time. The natural world is filled with circles, but it's surprising how unusual circular houses are in industrialized society. In our disconnected world, the circle has given way to the box.
As David Pearson explains in his introduction, "Like our nomadic ancestors, many of us have a deep yearning to roam with the seasons and be close to nature and the cosmos. The traditional forms of the yurt, tipi, and bender are the apogee of this experience. . . . Nomadic populations live in some of the most inhospitable and barren regions of the world and this is why they are nomads. Whether it be the deserts of the Sahara and Gobi, the steppes of Mongolia, or the polar tundras, these vast areas are either too hot and arid or too cold and windswept to be cultivated. An African grass-covered hut, a Romany gypsy 'bender,' an Asian yurt, or a Native American tipi are all perfect lessons in appropriate design and sustainable building. Refined over generations, they are simple yet sophisticated, beautiful and comfortable."
Remarkable for their economy, resilience, and portability, these structures have continued to exert a powerful appeal in modern times. And beyond practicality, what the circle dwellers in this book speak of most eloquently is the incomparable spiritual resonance of round homes, which "represent the universe in microcosm: the floor (Earth), the roof (sky), and the hole in the roof (the sun)."
Circle Houses is a fascinating glimpse of tradition meeting timelessness, filled with stories of 21st-century nomads and complete with basic instructions for designing and constructing your own yurt, tipi, or bent-frame tent.

I thought the book gave an excellent description of yurts and tipis from a historical perspective and present day use. Its gives case studies/examples of people who current live in these types of unique dwellings. We added a couple of yurts to our North Georgia bed and breakfast inn. We have witnessed some of the feelings first hand that our guests have had that were also mentioned in the book by yurt dwellers.

5 out of 5 stars Great book about western wear.......2002-03-23

For cowgirl living in The Netherlands, born and raised, this book I found in a Dutch bookstore about 4 years ago, is a great source about western wear.
About a year ago I got a signed book of Tyler. So now I own two of them. One to cherrish for ever and the other one to use for ideas to create new tailor made western wear I make myself.
It's a great source and a must have for westernwear lovers.
Same goes for the books about boots.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, could use more focus.......2007-07-27

A fine intro primer on photographer, but I felt always on the edges of getting good information. Much better at technical stuff, skimps on the art of photography.

5 out of 5 stars Very well done.......2007-06-02

I've found this book to be the most helpful both for novices and learning to take the more professional shots.

Detailed information, definitions and technical terms are not so overwhelming that it would dissuade the average novice, but at the same time, they are explained well enough to carry on a conversation at your local camera store.

Now I just have to sit down and read the whole thing and I will be truly enlightened, or at least exposed at the proper F-stop.

3 out of 5 stars A VERY Short Course.......2003-04-01

The book itself isn't bad. As a matter of fact, the illustrations and example photographs are excellent. But this is a VERY short course in photography. Most topics are covered in just enough detail to get you started, but there's really not enough here to really learn from without a lot of experimentation. A better bet is Photography" (7th edition). It is much more complete, has the same type of illustrations (it's from the same publisher) and covers all types of photography in detail. It's a little pricier, but you get so much more in "Photography" that this book is pretty much unnecessary if you have it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners!.......2000-09-16

This is an excellent book for photography beginners. I am currently using it for a college course and is wonderful. Even if you are an intermediate this will still serve usesful as a reference book.

5 out of 5 stars If you're a beginner, you MUST read this book!.......2000-03-13

I purchased this book so that I could start to understand the basics of manual photography before I enrolled in a photography class (I didn't want to look like a complete idiot!). Fortunately, I realized that this book is all I really need to get started and saved myself the cost of the course! It is written in a very clear, concise manner with illustrations to demonstrate every point. Each section of the book contains not only definitions and instruction, but tips and pointers to perfect your technique. The book covers cameras (and all of their controls), different lense types and how they affect the pictures you take, a thorough description of different film types and how they work, what exposure is and how to perfect it, developing the negatives, printing pictures, obtaining ideal lighting, special techniques, and how to see like a camera. Best of all, it teaches you how all of the different factors (shutter speed, aperture, lighting, distance to subject, developing, etc.) relate to each other and how a limitation on one could be offset by adjusting another. A+ book!

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!.......2000-02-12

When i started my Photo 101 class my teacher assigned this book and since day one I have completely understood everything it says. I'd be lost without it.

5 out of 5 stars A first rate guide and introduction for B&W photography.......1998-10-28

The best basic book of beginning photography that I know of. I like the clear and concise illustrations in particular. As a college instructor I use it as a text book in all my beginning classes.

4 out of 5 stars Good, basic photography book, though dated.......2006-07-21

I've been using SLR's & digital cameras since early high school, including use for some publication work. This book gives good, basic information, and would be good for a novice just learning to use a film-type camera. My copy is dated 1979, so it includes nothing about digital photography. The other reviewer referred to Chapter 9 as being nothing more than verse or poetry. That is somewhat puzzling as my copy only has 7 chapters. Also, unless there have been more current editions, this book is too dated to ever be used as a textbook for any current college course. However, if you are just looking for a basic reference on basic, film-type photography, or are a new hobbyist with a film camera, this book is certainly adequate, and one could do worse.

1 out of 5 stars Complete tripe........2004-07-15

If you are talking a College level course that utilises this book as the main text, I truly pity you. You will learn more by simple self research via the internet and using your camera over the duration of the course than this book could ever teach you. By the final chapter you are left banging your head into your desk wondering why anyone would ever choose this offal as a required textbook. Don't believe me? Read Chapter 9 and notice that the vast majority of the text is simple poetic musings followed by references back to previous chapters, as the authors were too bloody lazy to expand upon their meager ideas. Pathetic.

    Book Description

From the time of the ancient pharaohs, when Egypt stood at the apex of civilization, they who would not succumb to death's embrace began their dark works. Woman who pierced the obsidian veil of immortality, practicing an evil magic to attain it, at whatever cost to innocent life it would take. From that time to this, beauty and everlasting life has been theirs, and the road to that vanity is strewn with thousands of bodies. For a second time, we take a look at what becomes an immortal, and the blood it must bathe in. Timeless illustrations by such artists as:Arantza, Tomas Giorello, Fastner & Larson, Pelaez, Quitabani, Daniel Pascarelli, Mitch Byrd, Sanjulian, and many others. Cover art by Fastner & Larson.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars SEXY IN ANCIENT EGYPT.......2005-11-12

One of the things I love about the Gallery Girls collections from SQ Productions is the endless variety of themes they come up with for these fantastic pin-up collections, not to mention the always considerable talent that works on them. Eternal Temptation 2 is the second volume of pin-up art using the mysterious ancient Egypt as the back drop. Intrepid tomb raiders, sexy mummies, and luscious Egyptian queens can all be found in the book that features a painted cover by fan favorites Fastner & Larson, and features artists like Glas Gallego, Arantza, Pedro Cuevas, San Julian, Palaez, and many more into this 64 page book.

While this theme may be a tad bit limiting in its scope, it's the artists who really take ball and run with it to produce some wonderful illustrations. An elaborate piece by Blas Gallego has a nude blonde slave being dragged before an Egyptian queen by a mummy. Daniel Pascarelli shows off another mummy shambling forward carrying the body of a topless pyramid explorer as her comrades look on helpless in the distance. One of my favorites is a 40's inspired piece by Marashi of good girl art showing a lovely and buxom blonde tomb raider surprised by a mummy who grabs her from behind. I love the vintage style hair and bra in this piece that is so reminiscent of old pulp covers.

I also love the rather gory item by Quintabani showing a woman sitting with her back to the reader as she holds a severed mummy head in her hand. Bondage and S & M fans will love the piece by Boada with a nude slave on her knees, fresh from a whipping as evidenced by the marks on her back as the queen sits amused. Palaez and Arantza are always a highlight of any Gallery Girls collections and they do not disappoint here. Palaez draws a beautiful queen being worshipped by a pair of mummies who are on their knees embracing her. Arantza produces a glorious Egyptian woman in gold head dress standing before an ornate sarcophagus.

Quite a different route for this Gallery Girls collection but certainly no less stunning.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings on this one .......2007-05-05

This is a good book if you use it for a reference guide to quite a few National Parks and cities. In their many trips, the author gives quite a few details on the many parks, attractions and visitor centers they visit. Unfortunately, he does it in textbook fashion - we did this, we saw this, this park has so many acres, we ate here. He also writes alot about the weather each day. For these reasons alone, I will keep this book in my new camper to use as we set off on our upcoming trip.
But realize the book has very little by way of descriptions of these places other than facts. And very little about people other than names and who paid for each meal. His humor is very opinionated and can be mean sometimes, the one-sided political jokes wore very thin very quickly. I was hoping for more tales and less facts.

Empty milk cartons, newspaper, string, cans, mismatched socks and other ordinary things become the building blocks for enthralling play. I've used this book a lot! We've come up with great birthday party activities from this-- or rainy-day boredom busters. One 4-yr-old child who had just had a $400 chuck-e-cheese birthday asked if she could have her party in my back yard next year! The obstacle course suggestions alone are worth buying this book. This book will educate you to look at your recycables in a new way. After reading this-- my own ideas flourished as well. In fact, every item in your house will start to reveal it's play possibilities to you. Anyone who has watched a kid play with a cardboard box or tube for hours will appreciate this book. Some of the things we have made from recyclables and found objects have been played with more than most other toys in our house.

‘What a scene!’ wrote Horace Walpole. ‘An army in the night dragging itself up a precipice by stumps of trees to assault a town and attack an enemy strongly entrenched and double in numbers!’ In one short sharp exchange of fire Major-General James Wolfe’s men tumbled the Marquis de Montcalm’s French army into bloody ruin. Sir John Fortescue famously described it as the ‘most perfect volley ever fired on a battlefield’. In this book Stuart Reid details how one of the British Army’s consummate professionals literally beat the King’s enemies before breakfast and in so doing decided the fate of a continent.

3 out of 5 stars Not as Good as Chartrand's Volume.......2003-05-09

Four years ago, the very capable historian Rene Chartrand wrote Osprey's Quebec 1759 in the Order of Battle series. Now, Osprey has decided to publish a campaign title on the same subject by author Stuart Reid. Chartrand's earlier volume was so comprehensive that it seems a waste of time to recover this same ground, and the only value added in this new volume are the 3-D maps and the battle scenes (which frankly, are not very good). Indeed, Reid's Quebec 1759 accomplishes much less in the same 96-page format than Chartrand.

Quebec 1759: The Battle that Won Canada begins with a short introduction, a campaign chronology, and a very brief section on opposing commanders. The section on opposing armies borrows heavily from Chartrand's earlier volume, although the author neglected to discuss the Royal Navy's participation. The section on opposing plans is also rather brief. There are a total of five 2-D maps (the Canadian theater of operations, the river war in June-August 1759, the proposed St Michel Operation, the landing at Montmorency on 31 July 1759, and the landing at Foulon) and three 3-D Bird's Eye View maps (two of the Battle on the Plains of Abraham and one of the Battle of St Foy in April 1760). The three battle scenes are: the landing at Montmorency, the storming of the Foulon and the Battle on the Plains); however, the battle scenes in this volume, by artist Gerry Embleton, are not as good as in most other Osprey volumes.

Reid is a British re-enactor with considerable insight into the 18th Century British Army, which he showed to good effect in his earlier books on Culloden. However, Reid has a tendency toward a jingoistic, pro-British bias that can be annoying. In the introduction, Reid takes the time to criticize George Washington's "inept leadership" on the Monongahela four years earlier, while noting that the British General Braddock was merely "unfortunate." This biased opinion does not square with the facts. Reid also infers several times that Wolfe was fortunate in having virtually no colonial troops in his command at Quebec (although he could have mentioned that many British units were brought up to strength by men recruited in America). Reid's recurrent dismissal of French General Montcalm's military talents also seems overtly jaded; wasn't this the same Montcalm who defeated the British at Fort Ticonderoga? The subtitle, "the battle that won Canada" also betrays a narrow interpretation of that event; the French would see it as "the battle that lost Canada." Reid is certainly knowledgeable about the kit and tactics of British infantry in this period, but his objectivity - or lack of - is a cause for concern.

The only other noticeable difference between Reid and Chartrand is that the former bases much of his narrative on the letters of General Wolfe and other official British correspondence. There are virtually no sources quoted from the French perspective. Reid's discussion of the development of Wolfe's final battle plan is a bit tortuous, as most other attempts at analyzing the young general's decision-making process tend to wallow through a sea of assumptions and guesses. No matter whom you read, it is clear the Wolfe arrived at Quebec with only a hazy plan of action (based on ridiculously bad intelligence) and then decided to play it by ear. The landing at Montmorency was a disaster that demonstrated how effective Montcalm's area defense was, as well as the paucity of British tactical options. Wolfe's decision to land below the city was anticipated by the French and most British writers fail to mention just how narrow a margin of error the landing at Foulon was conducted. Wolfe got very lucky and got ashore in strength, but had the French been a bit more alert, the landing at Foulon would have been a replay of Montmorency. While the capture of Quebec in 1759 was certainly a great British victory, it was based far more on luck than good operational planning.

            Book Description

"The history of Jewish journalism in the United States presents something of a challenge. Traditionally, historians like to recount the story of progress: development onward and upward from primitive origins to flourishing contemporary success. The history of Jewish journalism in the US, by contrast, represents, at least until recently, a story of marked decay."
            --Dr. Jonathan Sarna, Brandeis University

"Jewish newspapers would be more compelling if Jewish readers wanted a more compelling paper. I can't tell you how many times over the years that I've heard readers say, 'I read your paper on Shabbat. I don't want to be disturbed. I just want to read nice Jewish news. I don't want things to make me angry.' That makes our role that much more difficult."
--Marc S. Klein, editor of j. the Jewish news weekly of Northern California

              Book Description

According to a widespread stereotype, scientists occupy an ivory tower, isolated from other parts of society. To some extent this is true, and the resulting freedom to pursue curiosity-driven research has made possible extraordinary scientific advances. The spinoffs of "pure" science, however, have also had powerful impacts on society, and the potential for future impacts is even greater.

The public and many policymakers, as well as many researchers, have paid insufficient attention to the mechanisms for interchange between science and society that have developed since World War II. Ivory Bridges examines two such mechanisms: governmental science policy (often involving the participation of "scientist administrators") and scientists' voluntary public-interest associations.

The examination of science policy is guided by the notion of "Jeffersonian science"—-defined as basic research on topics identified as being in the national interest. The book illustrates the concept with a historical case study of the Press-Carter Initiative of the late 1970s and proposes that a Jeffersonian approach would make a valuable addition to future science policy. The book also looks at the activities of citizen-scientists who have organized themselves to promote the welfare of society. It shows that their numerous and diverse organizations have made major contributions to the commonweal and that they have helped to prevent science from becoming either too subservient to government or too autonomous. An extensive appendix profiles a wide variety of these organizations.
