4 out of 5 stars The Beginner's Guide Oil Painting.......2007-08-10

As a beginner to oil painting, I know I ought to be painting apples and oranges; but I just purchased this book a few days ago and have already completed a painting using one of the ten step-by-step technique/lessons Ms. Gair takes you through. Granted, my painting looks amateurish but it was fun and I learned a lot! I am excited to try each of the techniques! Descriptions of supplies, equipment, and basic techniques are fairly brief. I find this book challenging and inspirational!

    5 out of 5 stars The Beginner's Guide Oil Painting : A Complete Step-By-Step.......1999-12-27

A Wonderful book. It does not have as much in depth discussions on techniques as in Allrich's book, however, it has a wide range of styles and exhibitions. It is so much fun to read it. This is the book displayes the beauty of oil painting to beginner's.

      Book Description

In our times, cityscapes are no longer dictated from above, by urban planners, architects, engineers— or even by geography — but "from below," by how the people live and work in groups. By simple, aggregated acts, people become spontaneous city planners: their urban design incorporates grafitti and street restaurants; makeshift homes that take their own formal pattern of development; ads and neon lights that become an integral part of the 'natural' landscape, as they have been for decades in Las Vegas. Even civic monuments can emerge, like the hundreds of names of desaprecidos "the disappeared" scratched in dirt in Buenos Aires. These changes are not accidents: they are "What We Want."

This kind of global transformation is not a dramatic force compared to erecting a skyscraper or residential housing – sometimes it is not even quite visible. But this force operates in strikingly similar ways in cities around the world; it is a profound social force in that it changes the way we interact and how we ultimately exert control over our environment.

Volume II is every bit as excellent as A-C, and as thought provoking. It's sad to have lost words like faunch (to rant, rage, or fret). The words form a picture of the country a century back, when folks stored their stuff in a hide-nasty (closet), and when they hifered (loitered) and someone asked what they were up to, they might say "Oh, I'm just helping Andy" (doing nothing). The lesson: If I faunch less and just put projects away in the hide-nasty, I can hifer more and take up the art of helping Andy.

        Book Description

Volume I of the Dictionary of American Regional English (DARE), published to wide acclaim in 1985, captured the wondrous variety and creativeness of American folk words and expressions and tickled the imagination of lovers of language around the world. Decades in preparation, the DARE corpus reflects the liveliness of English as it is spoken on America's main streets and country roads-the regional metaphors and similes passed along within homes and communities.

Like its popular predecessor, Volume II is a treasury of vernacular Americanisms. In Virginia a goldfinch is a dandelion bird," in Missouri an insufficient rain shower a "drizzle-fizzle." "Gate" was Louis Armstrong's favorite "sender" (a verbal spur to a sidekick in a band), a usage that probably originated from the fact that gates swing. Readers will bedazzled by the wealth of entries--more than 11,000-contained in this second volume alone. The two and a half pages on "dirt" reveal that a small marble is a "dirt pea" in the South. "To eat dried apples," a curious rural euphemism for becoming pregnant, appears in the five pages on "eat." Seven pages on "horn" and related words take readers on a tour of the animal and nether worlds: horned lark, horned frog, horned pout (look that one up), and that horned fellow, the devil.

Initiated under the leadership of Frederic G. Cassidy, DARE represents an unprecedented attempt to document the living language of the entire country. The project's primary tool was a carefully worded survey of 1,847 questions touching on most aspects of everyday life and human experience. Over a five-year period fieldworkers interviewed natives of 1,002 communities, a patchwork of the United States in all its diversity.

The result is a database of more than two and a half million items--a monument to the richness of American folk speech. Additionally, some 7,000 publications, including novels, diaries, and small-town newspapers, have yielded a bountiful harvest of local idioms. Computer-generated maps accompanying many of the entries illustrate the regional distribution of words and phrases.

The entries contained in Volume II--from the poetic and humorous to the witty and downright bawdy--will delight and inform readers. Frederic G. Cassidy is Professor of English, Emeritus, at the University of Wisconsin, where DARE's offices are located. Joan Houston Hall is Associate Editor of the Dictionary.

I don't have the 1st volume of DARE, but most libraries I've visited have it, but rarely the second one, and never the third and so forth. So i bought the 2nd volume D-H knowing what i was buying ahead of time anyways. It is naturally a continuation of the 1st volume ABC in quality, level of interest, and methodology. This is the most in-depth research project into American regional dialects that i myself have come across. If the reader is interested in studying the regional origins of American words and expressions, this is the best choice. (ex. Northern, North Midland, Southern, South Midland, TX, Western states, etc; with geographical maps offered on some words throughout the book.) Bear in mind that the 2nd volume, (and most likely the following ones), does not have the full introduction of explanatory materials which is found in the front matter of the 1st volume. These notes offer explanation of abbreviations, methods, speech mapping, background of the project, etc. to be used to make full sense and use of the volumes. However, a short reminder preface is there in the 2nd volume, so you're not "out there alone without a clue" in case you're unfamiliar with the DARE series :)

        5 out of 5 stars This is a word lover's Disney World.......2000-12-16

How do you pronounce the stuff you pour on top of pancakes? Surp? Syr-up? Serep? The answer tells a lot about you. What do you call the thing in which you carry groceries? Bag? Sack? Poke? Again, the asnwer tells much about you, and your regional heritage. Cassidy and Hall have spent many years interviewing hundreds of people from all parts of the United States and literally "mapping" their speech patterns. This book series will be on the desk of every serious linguist in the nation. BUT -- it's surprisingly interesting reading. Want to know the origin of "the last rose of summer?" Interested in what "love bite" means? These and thousands of other interesting American words and phrases are found here. This is a word lover's Disney World.

                        Book Description

These four volumes collect the poetic works of eleven African-American women writing in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Volume 1 presents two collections by Mary E. Tucker Lambert-- Loew's Bridge, A Broadway Idyl, a poet's-eye view of lower Manhattan just fter the Civil War, and Poems--and Infelicia, a dramatic work by the notorious Adah Isaacs Menken. Volumes 2, 3, and 4 contain works by nine other poets, all of which were were published between 1895 and 1910, a particularly brutal era for blacks. But, surprisingly, only one of these women (Lizelia Moorer) protests the treatment of her race during this period of social upheaval and injustice. The remaining poets all conformed to the ethos of most black writers of the time, "whitewashing" their art while educating and uplifting their people. Their themes are traditional--love, nature, death, Christian idealism and morality, and family--and are for the most part couched in conventional forms and language. As interesting for the subjects that they address as for those that they ignore, these selections offer a unique smapling of poetic voices that, until now, have gone largely unheard.

                            Book Description

For a century, Theodore Dreiser has represented for many readers a rebellious modernism whose novels both critiqued the American dream and embodied a bleakly deterministic perception of life. His first novel, Sister Carrie (1900), was reluctantly published and then ignored by its publisher, who thought the book immoral. Another publisher withdrew his fifth novel, The "Genius" (1915), rather than face prosecution on obscenity charges. Dreiser did not enjoy widespread popularity and critical acclaim until his masterpiece, An American Tragedy, appeared in 1925. This reference is an authoritative guide to his life and works. Included are several hundred entries on each of Dreiser's books and short stories, as well as magazine and newspaper pieces he collected during his life. Noteworthy uncollected and posthumously collected works are given separate entries, as are major characters in the novels, family members, friends, and other persons important to understanding his writings. There are also entries on Dreiser's publishers, his major influences, the places and events important to his life, and the literary and social contexts of his works. Expert contributors wrote each of the entries, many of which cite works for further reading. The volume closes with a selected bibliography of works by and about Dreiser.

                                  First published in 1927.

This was the first complete published edition of Teonge's Diary. An intensely human document, enlivened with sketches of the people he met and places he visited, Teonge's Diary is one of the finest accounts of life on board ship in the seventeenth century. When not at sea, Henry Teonge's life was as a parson and this edition of his Diary includes a full inventory for his Parish, providing an excellent source of historical and social information on rural life in the late 1600s.

Who were the scientific geniuses behind some of the most innovative and important discoveries in modern medicine?

Medical science in the 21st century is continuing to advance, but the character of that advancement is now governed by research teams and committees. Yet in the 19th century – a century when there were many great individual discoveries in medicine – the contributions of four individuals in particular accelerated developments in each of the main branches of medicine. This medical history by Thomas Dormandy focuses on these four individuals and their "moments of truth" - Laennec, a French physician; Semmelweis, a Hungarian obstetrician; Lister, a Scottish surgeon; and Walter Reed, an American army pathologist. They are not well known, compared with their contemporaries in other walks of life, yet their moments of truth transformed the lives of millions.

Thomas Dormandy is a retired consultant pathologist (MD, PhD, DSc, FRCS, FRCPath). He is the author of over 300 scientific papers and two books aimed at a general readership, The White Death: A History of Turberculosis , which was short listed for the Aventis prize and RMS book of the month, and Old Masters, a work of art history.

A great read, full of information, with extensive references and endnotes. I enjoyed these short biographies as they deal with each person in their historical social and medical context. This book is obviously the condensation of extensive reading, and research, but the final product reads well and flowingly.

In this new collection of essays on the Vietnam War, eminent scholars of the Second Indochina conflict consider several key factors that led to the defeat of the United States and its allies. The book adopts a candid and critical look at the U.S.'s stance and policies in Vietnam, and refuses to condemn, excuse, or apologize for America's actions in the conflict. Rather, the contributors think widely and creatively about the varied reasons that may have accounted for the U.S.'s failure to defeat the North Vietnamese Army, such as role played by economics in America's defeat. Other fresh perspectives on the topic include American intelligence failure in Vietnam, the international dimensions of America's defeat in Vietnam, and the foreign policy of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

For starters, the other two reviews of this book were very good and accurate.

I found this book particularly compelling. It was easy reading, and interesting in at almost all points (with the exception of the last chapters which covered how the American Peace Movement brought the war to a halt, I found this chapter to be very boring and not well written at all).

Reading this book, you will come to a very clear understanding of almost all of the reasons the U.S. failed to defeat an enemy which it vastly outnumbered and outgunned.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting but not totally convincing.......2005-05-09

Some of the best American analysts contribute a number of essays on the reasons behind the US defeat in Vietnam, destroying many myths that have persisted through the years. The focus of the book is on the strategic level of the war, thus the reader will find only a few remarks about the actual military operations. It is very useful though as food for thought and gives interesting interpretations regarding some crucial decisions taken during the war. The diplomatic maneuvers of Hanoi are very well presented as are the numerous sources which prove that the top US military leadership was perhaps more responsible for losing the war than its political masters. The book gave me also some remarkable information about the reasons for which the US fougth the Vietnam War without strong support from its traditional allies, why the military was prevented from striking North Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia even when it was obvious thta the communists used these countries as sanctuaries, what was the role of intelligence gathering, the economics of the conflict and the true influence of the anti-war movement. The main conclusion of the book is that Hanoi would probably have won the war no matter what the USA would have done and no matter how well its military had fought. "What emerges with great clarity from the chapters is that the Vietnam War was really many wars, but only one that finally counted for the Vietnamese. Its victims were primarily the Vietnamese, and its victors were the Vietnamese. Fifty years on, historians will look at the Cold War and wonder why the Americans did not understand better the folly of their attempt at nation - building. Vietnamese infiltrators into the Saigon regime's innermost councils escaped detection, while the countryside was ruled by the enemy whenever there was not the actual presence of American troops. The reality of Vietnam War was as elusive to American policymaker as the enemy forces were to the men they sent to this hall of mirrors. They saw only their own reflections multiplied over and over".

If that was so, then we must accept that the Vietnamese kind of war has really no antidote until today and that the combination of nationalism and fanaticism (with a clever and asymmetrical application of brute force) can prevail over democracy and freedom, which is a bad omen for the current US engagement in Iraq. I don't believe that Hanoi would have won the war in any case, nor that it could take casualties for ever and I think that the main reason for the US defeat was rather the prevailing view that no real American interests were at stake over there, at that particular period.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, Provocative Examination Of Vietnam War!.......2004-01-07

It is a commonplace observation that history is interpreted and written by the victors. In this case however, it seems to have been the vanquished, i.e., the United States and the western world, which has succeeded in predominantly defining the nature of the conflict in Vietnam and its environs, including Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand. With the special hubris and arrogance of the young ascending American academic establishment and its struggle to redefine the world in terms less dystonic to its neo-conservative worldview, we have suggested seemingly endless theories relating to how it is that "we" actively lost the war through incompetence, treachery, or misunderstanding, without ever seriously considering the quite formidable nature of the foe, and what the opposite side did to win the same conflict. Herein this imbalance is corrected, with thoughtful essays offered by nine noted scholars with convincing credentials regarding the war in Southeast Asia.

The several essays succeed marvelously in exploring the myriad of ways in which the Vietnamese actively prosecuted a multifaceted campaign against their American antagonists and ultimately defeated them, both on the battlefield, but much more critically, in terms of the revolutionary political struggle which was central to final success in transforming the country and uniting the people under a single flag. In so doing, they put the lie to such conventional wisdom as has gathered momentum in the last decade or so here in this country through the active if somewhat disingenuous ministrations of a bevy of enthusiastically neo-conservative authors who have redefined Vietnam as a so-called "necessary war".

This volume is masterfully edited by Professor Marc Jason Gilbert. Gilbert, a history professor, has managed to gather together an impressive collection of pertinent essays by such noted authors as Jeffrey Record, John Prados, William Duiker, and George Herring, among others. The essays cover a broad array of issues and concerns relating to the conduct of the war, and include discussions of elements such as foreign and domestic policy here in the United States, employment of military tactics, long term strategy of both sides, and the many ways in which the Vietnamese opposition laid the groundwork for the seemingly sudden collapse of the South Vietnamese capital in 1975. It also includes provocative examination of our intelligence failures on the ground in Vietnam, our misunderstanding and lack of appreciation for the nature of the civil war that underlay the whole conflict, and the ways in which our defeat would reverberate through our system of international relations. This is a wonderful book, and one I would recommend for use in an introductory class for undergraduates for both a balanced and fresh look at one of the most troubling military involvements of the U.S. military in the last century. Enjoy!

                                        Book Description

Michele Cunningham demonstrates that Napoleon III's motives for intervening in Mexico in the 1860s were consistent with his foreign policy, which was based on his belief that free trade was the best foundation for peace. He saw the establishment of a friendly government in Mexico as an opportunity to expand that policy to encompass the world by ensuring European access to American markets and preventing monopoly by the US.

                                          Book Description

By His Word is a Wake-up call to Christians and Churches. Europe has essentially become a pagan culture with the typical European having little or no interest in Christianity. America is on the verge of legitimizing homosexual "marriage", Jesus can not even be mentioned in public schools, and we are systematically eliminating every reference to our Christian heritage from textbooks and public areas. What is happening? America has more Bible colleges; church denominations; Christian books, tapes, and videos; Christian radio and television stations; and evangelistic outreaches than any nation on earth. Yet something is terribly wrong because we continue to lose our culture. By His Word explains why we are losing the battle for our culture and what we can do to stop the slide.

By His Word is an extensively illistrated and highly thought provoking book which you will want to share with other Christians. This book will help us reclaim our culture.
