Customer Reviews:
Enlightening and enjoyable!.......2001-09-05
This book, aside from the introduction, is comprised of reprints of articles, with photos and blueprints, on bungalows originally featured in the magazine "The Craftsman" from 1903 through 1916. Although only a couple of the homes described therein were actually designed by Stickley, the whole book was a delight. In their day, the cost to build these homes ranged from $2000 to a whopping $4000! The homes are from a simpler time, when closets were tiny and bathrooms were few, but the woodwork and stonework are inspiring. Important features of these homes include use of materials indigenous to the area so the home harmonizes with its surroundings, living porches, sleeping porches, fireplaces, and open floorplans. Not only is this book a delightful trip through the history of this style of home, it is also quite educational and contains many timeless ideas which would could be incorporated beautifully into today's homes as well.
Craftsman Bungalows : 59 Homes from the Craftsman by Gustav.......2001-06-14
As a Professional Interior Designer enamoured with Craftsman style homes I use this book as a resource almost daily. It provides inspiration for details that give period charm yet are very practical in todays interiors. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to organize and unclutter their home and add charm and create value while doing so. Craftsman details have roots in Asian and Shaker periods when life was less cluttered. The built-in millwork allows us to conceal the electronics required in this day and age and provide us with a more peaceful view of life.
Good Reference.........2000-04-11
This was a good reference for those looking to restore their Arts & Crafts, or Craftsman style home. We utilized this book to assist our architect in the design and final detailed drawings. It was worth the price.
Great reference for preservationists.......1997-06-12
This is a great reference for preservationists attempting to restore or furnish a home in the bungalow style. Architects may also find it to be an interesting reference. The volume includes original floor plans and photos of homes designed in the workshop of Stickley and included in his Craftsman magazine. The original commentary on the houses is quite interesting -- if not amusing -- providing information on the social context of the houses design. The various photos and descriptions of houses from the era are excellent resources for anyone furnishing a Craftsman home or bungalow

With excellent instructions and beautiful photos, Paper Art explores numerous aspects of a versatile, age-old medium that still offers today's crafters opportunity for innovation. The first section covers traditional papermaking techniques, outlines necessary supplies and details several methods, then explains how to add color and texture and how to make shaped papers. The next section, "Decorating Paper," encompasses embossing, stenciling, stamping, marbling, batik, various printing methods, orizomegami (the Japanese art of pleating the paper to create dye resists), and paste papers. "Papercraft Techniques" demonstrates manipulative methods: collage, papier-mâché, weaving, pleating, pop-ups, and sculpture. For additional inspiration, Paper Art also showcases striking works by 50 leading paper artists.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing--covers all techniques to add decoration to paper.......1999-01-23
A friend of mine lent me this book and I went right home and ordered it from Amazon. I am new to paper arts and I have a few other books with sections on decorating your own paper (marbling, paste papers, block printing, batik, etc., etc.) This is the only book, though, that gives enough guidance (including photographic images of all the tools needed and the steps involved) to give me the confidence to do the gorgeous techniques on my own. I can't wait to receive my own copy!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!.......2007-02-15
This book is wonderfully designed and covers everything a beginner as well as more advanced photographer could ask for. It is perfect for an advanced amateur/ semi-professional, such as myself, who's been shooting for several years and has a good grasp on aperture, shutter speed, and exposure. It's packed with a ton of information, and covers a wide range of topics, from the basics of different types of cameras, lenses, filters, and film, to the more advanced topics of panning, portraiture, macro, nudes (indoors as well as outdoors), shooting underwater, aerial photography, still life, interiors/ exteriors, urban and rural landscapes, mixed lighting, and even photographing food! And there's more! I especially liked the fact that this book even included discussions on cross-processing, digital toning, and polaroid emulsion lifts! In the Travel photograhy section, It even offers advice on the different lighting conditions one would face depending on all four of the seasons.
His style of writing is very straightforward and to the point, and easy to absorb. Every page is filled with gorgeous photographs and great examples of good and bad solutions for each of the situations discussed. I've learned so much from it and feel that it was definetely $19.99 well spent (I bought it from a bookstore a year ago). It is like an encyclopedia on photography, and I just ordered his other books from the series - The Photographer's Guide to ... I bought the ones on Compostion, Black and White, Light, and Portraits. I feel that at about $13 -$15 each, they are an excellent way to add to my library. ;-) There are other topics covered in this series, but before getting too excited and buying them all, I am waiting to see if his books in the series that I just ordered are as informative as the one I just reviewed.
To sum it up, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in owning an informative, well-written and beautifully photographed book on a wide range of topics in photography! Definitely worth the money!
Awesome for serious beginners.......2005-12-29
If you think yourself as a serious beginner and wanna teach yourself photography, get this book.
I borrowed this book from local public library, and I love it instantly.
First, this book covers a lot of topics, which make me feel it's universal ^_^ form "One-use camera" to "Digital toning", all of them were well organized into 2pages and fit under 4 categories: Basic techniques, Photographing People, Travel Photography, Advanced Techniques.
Second, In every topic, the author give you detailed technics to shoot right, plus the wrong/right picture samples, it's very easy to read and follow.
To me, this book can be used as an Text book for Practicing Photography 101, - what you need to add are some quizes and home work after every chapter.
How to use this book? Read this book, grab a camera and shoot!
After practicing the technics or tricks the book covered, I'm sure you will shoot much better the most of other people.
Great For Begginers!.......2005-07-07
I liked this book alot. It had a lot of information- as well as pictures to go along. I would Definitely Consider this book among others for first timers.
great instruction.......2004-03-03
This book does just what it promises on the cover and more, it doesn't just guide you, it shows how to take great photographs! As a portrait photographer I found the chapter on studio lighting very helpful, and I found the other tips and examples truly inspiring. John Freeman not only writes clearly, he manages to get his message accross with great images, his photography style is refreshing without being pretentious, his landscapes are crisp and masterfully executed, and above all his captions do what they are suposed to do, they explain in detail how the result was obtained. This is a great book for any photography enthusiast, at any proficiency level, a worthy addition to any photography library.
Go get it!!!.......2003-12-18
This book talks about so many different aspects of taking photographs, and every step is so well illustrated, that everyone will find it very useful. The lay out of each chapter is very well-organized, and all details of photographing are described in understandable terms. I was very interested in photographic people, and I expected to get a couple of pages covering that at most. However, John Freeman went into detail showing how to photograph children, families, portraits and naked bodies. The examples he provided were stunning! I can't wait to try out new ideas I got from this book!

Customer Reviews:
A most interesting read.......2004-08-29
For those who like social history written by the comtempories of the actual events, this book is a delight. Mrs. Dana's own writing style is quick and to the point. The editors had the good sense not to get in her way. Thus, the reader gets the true flavor of what had to be an extraordinary event at that time. We just do not have that many contemporary observations from the softer sex. Mrs. Dana's comments are direct and insightful, not unlike those of another female diarists, Mary Chesnut.

Elderwoman: Reap the wisdom, feel the power, Embrace the joy
ASIN: 0897892690 |
Book Description
This volume presents a holistic, theoretical framework for understanding menopause as a major developmental event in women's lives. Rather than an unpleasant phase to be endured or alleviated, Marian Van Eyk McCain views menopause as an empowering experience that women can use for personal growth. Artfully interweaving her research, years of clinical experience, and her personal perceptions of menopause, McCain creates an inspiring new vision of the "change of life." She goes well beyond a discussion of hormones and hot flashes to uncover the deep emotional and spiritual significance of this time in women's lives. This book is not only about change on a personal or physical level but in society as well. McCain lays out historical and cross-cultural beliefs about menstruation and menopause and the attitudes surrounding them (from taboos to reverence) and points out that in our modern society women most often either try to ignore or "make it through" this essential period of womanhood in order to compete in a man's world on male terms. In tune with recent feminist thought, the author says there is a new womanpower emerging, which means that it is time for women to honor their natural cycles. There is no other book that combines the insights, inspiration, and wealth of information contained in this work. It is an important book for the alternative-minded baby-boom generation who are seeking new ways to approach middle age.
Book Description
The very name El Cid sums up much of the special character of medieval Spanish warfare. It comes from the Arabic al sayyid, master or chieftain, and seems to have been given to Rodrigo de Vivar by his Muslim foes. But was it given in recognition of El Cid's victories against Islam in the 'Reconquista' – or because this Castilian nobleman was as content to serve beside the Muslims as to fight them? The story of the Christian conquest of the Iberian peninsula which gave rise to the legend of El Cid, is here examined by David Nicolle, who outlines the history, tactics, arms and armour of the period.
Customer Reviews:
Moors and Andalusians.......2007-04-02
This title examines the Reconquista from both the Christian and Muslim sides, showing the organization of their military forces, their armament, and their history. The plates are excellent, and also give an idea of female and civilian costume. The book says very little of El Cid himself, however (following the tradition of Nicolle's books with 'Arthur' and 'Attila' in the title).
Great!!!.......2006-03-13
Usually I do not purchase items over the internet but I needed it for class. The book came in clean unused condition and it was what I ordered. It was great!!!1
More About the Reconquista and Less about El Cid.......2003-05-27
I was disappointed in this book. I was looking for an Osprey treatment of the wars centered around the late 1000s in Spain with a particular emphasis on the battles and campaigns of El Cid and the monarchs and rulers he served. What I got instead was a boiled down version of a survey course on Spanish history over three centuries and little mention of the Cid (OK, there's *A* plate of him and his death and a couple of other activities are mentioned in the chronology but since he was the lead in the title I had expected more than that). If you are a historian, avoid this. If you are a wargamer, get it only if you need a few of the illustration plates for the period. I don't really feel like it is worth [what] most people ask for it used. Bad Osprey, bad, BAD Osprey!
El Cid and his ilk.......2002-08-11
Dr. Nicolle's treatment of the Iberian peninsula from the mid 11th century through the final conquest of Granada in 1492. One will come to recognize that there was no monolithic conflict between Muslims and Christians during this period; rather, the majority of combat resulted from constant raiding and squabbles between small states. Let's face it, folks, most of the activity was the theft of livestock! This book may have opened my eyes to the fact that the raiding that took place in the Later Western Empire continued unabated until the Renaissance.
No saints here! Just lots of petty warlords and self aggrandizing mercenaries. Great reading. Once again, the series falls short on maps but makes up with great color plates by Mr. McBride and a great bibliography.

Book Description
Although the French language and the traditional rural way of life are disappearing among Louisiana Cajuns, identification with Cajun ethnicity is flourishing. Henry and Bankston draw on historical documents, ethnographic observations and interviews, and statistical sources to investigate and explain this phenomenon. They argue that while Cajun ethnicity developed from and consisted of the French-speaking, rural poor of the region, it has been transformed, during the 20th century, into a regional class with common interests and outlooks. A substantial minority of Cajuns have risen out of the blue collar niche and into the middle class, creating more complicated problems of adjustment, role redefinition, and the changing nature of relationships with friends and family who remain part of the working class. The authors detail and describe the way the working class Cajun majority and the white collar Cajun minority draw on images and ideas from a reconstructed past to make sense of their present conditions and changes in their community. This comprehensive structural analysis of Cajun ethnicity suggests a new emphasis on structural conditions in understanding ethnic phenomena and introduces the concept of an "economy of ethnicity." In analyzing and exploring the creation and maintenance of Cajun ethnicity, Henry and Bankston also point toward a general theory of contemporary ethnic groups. Why, for instance, have more and more people claimed to be of Native American ancestry? How did the population of people calling themselves Irish soar over the course of a very brief period of time? Arguing that as the cultural basis of difference subsides, ethnic claims increase, and that such claims are based on a number of factors including socioeconomic and regional concerns, the authors contend that the same factors at play in the maintenance of the Cajun ethnicity are also at play in other ethnic communities and subcultures within the United States. They conclude that in claiming an ethnic identity, group members rework ideas of history and ancestry in order to apply these ideas to modern life.

Interactions between cell surfaces allow embryo to develop.......2000-11-26
Analytic and innovative, yet fairly easy to read, book on the place-dependent interactions of cell surfaces with other cell surfaces that regulate the processes of embryological development in metazoans (ie, animals).
Heavy going, big payoff.......2000-05-09
Edelman's Topobiology provides an excellent introduction to the field of molecular embryology. In the book you will be introduced to CAMs (cell adhesion molecules), SAMs (substrate adhesion molecules), and CJMs (cell junction molecules) that are produced and used by the body to keep itself organized and literally stuck together as it develops and grows. The processes of development and growth are extremely complex, and involve interactions among many different entities in the body. As the header suggests, this book is not an easy read; it presents abstract concepts, and the author uses extremely complex sentence constructions to tell his story. This is not a book for the faint of heart, it is written with the professional biologist in mind.
If you have the strength and the courage, I suggest that you give this book a try
P.S. I am the "reader" from Manchester College in the previous review -- I didn't get my name on that one though.
