5 out of 5 stars Seminal Work.......1999-12-23

This book is one of the only works that addresses the topic of Ecological Design in an in-depth manner. Moreover, it focuses on the progenitors of this movement - the design outlaws that had the courage to forge entirely new and radical paths in art, design, science and technology. Powerful stuff - important message - innovative and engaging subject matter.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book .......2007-08-21

In the herd of recent books, this one distinguishes itself in it's quality of images, concise accurate descriptions and scope.
This work seems to be the product of much labor, research and maybe even love. I have to hand it Codina, he's the kind of person that should be writing books.
Among the outstanding pieces represented is a North African bracelet made step by step by two Algerian women. Definitely not the kind of entry you find in many American publications flooded with "art school" drivel from self promoting arrogant twits so prominent in publications today.
The alternative casting techniques section is a seminar in itself, and just when I thought I new everything!
Don't get me wrong, there are a few downright ugly pieces, though I can easily overlook them if favor of the splendid work that predominates throughout.
Telling, is a closing statement where he thanks the contributors and gives a bit of insight into the writing of this fine book.
If you don't have this publication, then buy it. Trust me on this.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC.......2007-08-15

I have bought many many books and some I will never open again! Then some I can't keep the pages in they are used so much. This will sure to be one of those this book by Charles Codina is awesome. This book is a RARE find. It is imformative and visually stunning. I suggest not missing out on this one!

Happy jewelry making!

THIS BOOK WAS EDITED BEAUTIFULLY!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2007-06-21

This book is a favorite of mine. There are many types of smithing to learn in this book. Although the pictures and descriptions are limited somewhat, the book does give enough information to get anyone who works with metal started on any of the work in this book. The pictures are excellent in layout and design. This book not only makes a good instruction book for the metal worker, but it is also an excellent coffee table book as well.

5 out of 5 stars An winner for Carles Codina.......2006-03-29

Right up front I have to say that I am a fan of Mr Codina books I have three of them This one is a delight, it has the abundance of pictures of the work being described. It covers the subject Jewelry vessels & Ornaments like a blanket. The side journeys to specific techniques and processes. Will give the novice and expert plenty to ponder, think and design their projects for some time to come.
The picture story of silver spinning the coffee service is alone worth the price of the book.Even if you never have the desire to spin metal. The section on concept and image will jump start a lot of people. The step by step has some projects that can be modified for the readers own enjoyment. I own it and use it. It is a six star book.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Less than mediocre crossover.......2004-04-26

With all the countless DC/Dark Horse crossovers over the years, Superman VS The Terminator, as the previous reviewer had stated, was practically inevitable. The storyline picks up after the events of the Terminator 2 film, with Sarah and John Connor in Metropolis on the run from the Skynet sent time traveling terminators. Eventually, Superman is on the scene, protecting Sarah and John, and he is joined by Supergirl, Suberboy, and Steel. Lex Luthor is on the scene as well, with his own ulterior motives of course, leading up to a twist ending. Alan Grant's script has plenty of plot holes and some real bad cheesy dialogue (especially at the end between Supes, Sarah, and Lois Lane), but the plot twists and solid art save this book from being a total stinker. All in all, this is worth a look for crossover fans, but it's far from being anything special.

3 out of 5 stars Nice concept, but could'v ebeen much better........2004-01-18

Superman vs. Terminator was an inevitable crossover...what with Batman vs. Predator, which was probably the greatest DC/Dark Horse cross over ever, and other similar crossovers, Superman was bound to end up going head to head with the Terminator eventually...so was it good? Well, yes and no.

Superman vs Terminator is just a bit too over the top...taking place presumably after the events of Terminator 2, the story begins with Sarah and John fleeing into Metropolis, being chased by Terminators. Superman is on the scene right away, and he soon realizes that he's not dealing with any ordinary foes. The story is decent enough, with some very nice art work. Many of Superman's allies show up, including Supergirl, Steel and some others. Of course, Dark Horse and DC, despite excellent crossovers in the past, have really managed to screw up their stories as of late.

Completely out of the blue, hundreds of Terminators start coming in from the future, and out of nowhere begin to get Jet-Pack upgrades, elastic body parts, multiple arms...presumably attempting to put an interesting spin on the story, but only succeeding in making it a little too silly. Superman is then transported into the future to put a stop to it, while Supergirl, and even Lex Luthor, protect John and Sarah in the past...though Lex as usual has his ulterior motives. While in the Future Superman runs into old allies, as well as a familiar enemy from the past serving as a powerful ally to the Terminators.

The overall concept is very interesting...but its just a little poorly executed. While not anywhere near as good as the Batman Vs. Predator crossover, or Superman vs. Aliens, it definitely isn't anywhere near as bad as Aliens vs. Predator vs. Terminator, which was undoubtedly one of the worst crossovers ever. Superman vs Terminator sits nicely in the mediocre range...it has very good artwork, very nice twists (especially at the end), and though it suffers from some silly additions, its overall a good read and a welcome addition to any collection.

          Book Description

In April 1890 the steamer Janet Nichol set off from Sydney for a three month trading voyage through the central and western Pacific. Aboard were seven European men, a crew of forty islanders, and one woman: a short-haired, barefoot, cigarette-smoking American, Fanny Van de Grift Stevenson, wife of Robert Louis Stevenson. The Cruise of the Janet Nichol is Fanny's account of her journey with her husband and grown son through what are today the Cook Islands, Tuvalu, Kiribati, and the Marshall Islands.

Fanny Stevenson's spirited personality led her into scenes and situations few Europeans, and even fewer European women, had experienced. Her diary and its photographs offer unique glimpses of life in some of the last independent Pacific kingdoms and those just coming under colonial rule at the end of the nineteenth century. This extraordinary travel book is the story of an unconventional woman, her unusual marriage, and her adventurous journey through a rapidly changing Pacific world.

"I can see her now—a small woman in a blue dress, sitting barefoot on the roof of the after-cabin of a trading schooner in the South Seas. Her Panama hat, set at a rakish angle, shades a face of breath-taking beauty. She is holding a large silvered revolver in each hand, shooting sharks with deadly accuracy as they are caught and hauled to the taffrail by excited sailors."—Austin Strong on Fanny Stevenson, "The Most Unforgettable Character I've Met"

The Persian Empire grew in the vacuum left by Assyria's destruction of the Kingdom of Elam. Prince Teispes captured Anshan, once a stonghold of the Elamites. His father, Achaemenes is the person who is apparently responsible for training and organising the early Persian army and it is his name that is the beginning of the royal line of Achaemenian Kings. It is a dynasty which includes Darius the Great – the finest ruler of the Achaemenid era. The army he commanded included the infamous 'Immortals', who formed the elite of the Persian army, their numbers always kept to exactly 10,000 men.

As with the elite title on the Greeks by the same author, most of the book, save a brief introduction to the organization of the Achamenid Persian Army, is a highly detailed plate commentary. The plates are pretty good but are a little too similar. The text is a fine source on this subject, detailing a variety of troop types including several kinds of the Immortals bodyguard regiments.

            Book Description

In this unique series the Civil War comes vividly to life.  Here an eyewitness accounts--many available for the first time in decades--by generals, journalist, and ordinary foot soldiers, both blue and gray, who relive the conflict in all its terrible glory.  Each volume brings you a human perspective on the war--its most decisive battles, its most remarkable personalities. Gettysburg: Two Eyewitness Accounts is American history at its finest--and a reading experience you will never forget.  In some ways it epitomized the entire war: three hot days in July filled with missed opportunities, great courage, inconsistent leadership, and horrific, relentless carnage.  In rare volume we see the battle from both sides, as experienced by two very different combatants, one Union and the other Confederate.  From Little Round Top to Devil's Den to Pickett's Charge, Lt. Frank A. Haskell and Col. William C. Oates, one in a meticulous hindsight and the other still feverish with war, re-create three days that changed American history.  Here are the momentous decisions of Lee, Longstreet, and Meade.  Here are the fatal maneuverings of the forces in the field.  And here, in descriptions unmatched in Civil War literature, is all the heartbreak and triumph of Gettysburg.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A view from both sides!.......2002-05-27

This book starts off with a great and fair introduction to the two stories that are to be told by William Oates of the Confederacy and Frank Haskell of the Union. Written by Glenn LaFantasie the lengthy introduction writes about both Civil War authors Oates and Haskell. He is careful in explaining that each man's history, background and present situation which may have had an effect on their writing. After the introduction William Oates of the 15th Alabama structures his story first by giving an historical view of the army movments north and south as a prelude to the battle of Gettysburg. His writing of such a history could probably have been eliminated while his story of marching to Gettysburg and his role in the battle should have taken precedent. Oates offers his controversial view of the battle which is interesting in many ways. Not only does he tell his story but he tells it painted his way. Being a reader of many Gettysburg related books, it is easy to find fault with some of Oates' story. Though this is what makes this book interesting. We need to know what Oates considered and thought was how things went instead of guessing. We need something to stand on and his story though it may not be accurate is very descriptive and essential for understanding the battle.

While Oates offered his view of the 15th Alabama's fight to take Little Round Top, a great story is to follow written by Frank Haskell. Unfortunately, Haskell tends to waste the immediate structure of the battle like Oates had earlier. He tells the readers where such a corps was placed, who was advancing, etc. This boring non-relating story he tells doesn't tell about him or his action in the battle. After this quick and non essential tale of the battle of Gettysburg, Haskell finally gets to his involvement in the fight. This is where Haskell gets interesting. He is very fair on his descriptions and how he associates with other Generals during the conflict. His tale of Pickett's Charge and the carnage is excellent. I really liked Haskell's discipline in not reacting to telling about a battle on the field that he didn't take part in or had not witnessed. His graphic tale of Pickett's charge and the movements covered certainly placed myself right along with him on the field. He builds up Day #3 of Gettysburg very well and comes to a complete end to his story without dragging the reader.

For the novice reader of the battle of Gettysburg, I wouldn't recommend this book as it is not generalized enough to understand without reading more of the basic battles of the three day saga. For the advanced reader looking for more historical insight written by two soldiers that were actually there, this is an excellent book and I recommend it completely.

5 out of 5 stars A great book written by soldiers who fought in the battle.......2000-03-28

Gettysburg is a well written book by two soldiers who fought in the battle. COL William C. Oates fought for the Confederate side and LT Frank A. Haskell fought for the Union side. Each soldier captured his side of the battle in great detail. The stories are well written and easy to read. It is very interesting to read about the different viewpoints of the battle. COL Oates gives a great analysis of why the Confederates lost the battle and how they could have won it. I highly recommend this book for all fans of the Battle of Gettysburg.

5 out of 5 stars A remarkably objective and detailed report from a union view.......1999-05-05

In order to fully appreciate this minute by minute account you should first see the movie"gettysburg" and visit the national park. The detail of how the soldiers were placed comes to life and even more amazing is the recounting of how the soldiers felt, what they were thinking and the general's strategies in leading their men. I highly recommend the audio tapes of this book.... If you've been there, if you've studied the battle, you will be completely mesmerized!!!
