best ever.......2007-07-18
I have many how to paint books and Dorothy Dent's are my favorite. This book includes 5 lessons in acrylic and 5 lessons in oils and her step-by-step instructions are very clear and easy to follow. She also includes exact colors to use which would be helpful to the beginner artist. I have recreated all of her pictures with surprising success. She also includes templates you can enlarge to transfer the image to your canvas. I would highly recommend this book and her other acrylic "Realistic Landscapes" step-by-step book.
Ten step-by-step projects for both beginners and advanced painters.......2006-04-03
Dorothy Dent's Painting Landscapes Filled With Light provides ten step-by-step projects for both beginners and advanced painters who want to paint light-filled landscapes depicting different seasons and times. Color values are surveyed in landscape projects which show how to capture sunsets and sunrises, autumn foliage, moonshine on water, and more. More than just an exercise book, each project includes diagrams showing light direction and color tonal values and a commentary on how experts fine-tune paintings such professional finishing touches.
Excellent book.......2006-03-19
Another excellent book from Dorothy Dent. From the beginner to the seasoned painter there is something for everyone to learn in this book. Her explanations of light are easy to understand and follow. Recommend highly.

Book Description
The objective of this book is to present a photograph collection of astronomical objects taken with large Schmidt telescopes. It incorporates material from not only the telescope at the Karl-Schwarzschild-Observatory at Tautenberg, but also the telescopes at the Anglo-Australian Observatory and the European Southern Observatory. The Schmidt telescope is a special photographic telescope that uses a spherical, rather than a parabolic, main mirror. This results in an extremely large field of view and good resolution. The book contains photographs of galactic nebulae of different species, galactic and globular clusters of stars, stellar fields, external galaxies, and comets. Facing each photograph is a text page introducing the object to the reader and explaining its appearance, characteristic data, and its physical nature. The authors also provide extensive information on the history of the astronomical telescope, the Schmidt telescope, and the life of its inventor, Bernhard Schmidt. Astrophotography with the Schmidt Telescope presents scientific facts in a readable, enjoyable format. All who are interested in astronomy, the natural sciences, and history will enjoy this book, whether specialists or nonspecialists in the field. Originally published by Urania Verlag, Leipzig.

Bewitching!.......2006-03-07
This cute magical girl manhwa(Korean manga)from a few years ago is really neat. Set in a fantasy world, Rika is a young girl training to be a wizard. But the only real way to be able to use magic in this world is with a magic staff. The only local staff maker leaves deep in the woods. Rika manages to get her friend Eugen to come with her. They reach the wizard's place, expecting to find some old Gandalf-type fogie, but instead a cute young girl who claims to be 500 years old. She tells them that she'll make them the staff if they find a small bag with a black stone in it that she lost in the woods.
After nearly getting taken down into some waters by a snake goblin(a cross between a goblin and a naga)Eugen heads off on his own and runs into the bunny-eared(possibly elven)Kirik who goes to the same magic school as them. Rika on the other hand has been rescued by the tall fellow referred to as the Sword Master of Black Iron.
A few more scurrying about here and there, and Rika finally finds the pouch with the black stone. However the stone is the housing for a guardian spirit catboy named Nomi who is inadvertantly released by Rika. Since Rika summoned him, he accepts her as his "owner". After returning to the young female wizard, it turns out she had an overstock of magic staffs, so she gives Rika one and lets her keep the magic rock which is actually called a wishstone.
Next, Rika and Nomi head out on a quest to rescue a princess from a dark prince. However, the Sword Master of Black Iron has his sights set on Rika too for some reason. Rika ends up being captured by the dark prince too, and its up to Nomi to save her from there, even though he doesn't care anything about saving the princess.
11th Cat is the defination of what otaku refer to as "kawaii". It's perfect for shojo readers with its magical girls, handsome boys, and general manga cuteness factor with super-deformed takes and all. The story itself could use a little more depth to it, but the enchanting artwork makes up for it in spades. A surefire hit for Tokyo Mew Mew otaku.

A Hidden Treasure.......2004-05-18
I came across this book by accident at my local library. It reminded me why memoirs are my favorite genre. Addleton does a wonderful job of telling the story of how his parents came to be missionaries in Pakistan, and what it was like being a MK (missionary kid). This book is not hagiography, but full of insight, humor, and complexity. The only drawback is I wish that the author had included a postscript telling us what happened to him: how he came to be in the Foreign Service, how he met his wife, etc. Maybe he's saving that story for another book?
Some Far and Distant Place.......2004-05-12
Eloquently written. Jonathan Addleton demonstrates astonishing recall of his childhood years. He vividly describes people, events, circumstances and sceneries related to his growing up as the son of Christian missionary parents in Pakistan during the 1960's and 70's. The book is rich in depicting a marvelous array of comparisons and contrasts for one like myself who grew up in the same period in the affluence of North America. The language flows and captivates as it brings to life a world I previously knew nothing about,
Who are enimies of religion?.......2002-03-03
A Bapitists son, transported from The US of A's bible belt to Pakistan, because his humble preacher father,is sent there...Unfortunately, Chistianity has had limited sucess on the Indian Sub continent(Pakistan Included) since time Immemorial. What is appealing about this book is the simplicity of his secluded childhood although limitingly exposed to Pakistani children other than the you know whos...he paint's the hilly sites of Murre hills ,a favourite private school area and the acrid heat of Sukkur-Rhori-Sind area area....with childhood nostalgia and a Non Judgemental Tolerance of those of Islamic following...a book which should be on Mr.Bushs list of Mandatary reading...I know Mr.Le Carre will approve if he knew it existed...What left a undelible impression on me,was that even after over two decades of severe lack of sucess in Convertion of the Pakistanis...(I think it talked of three or four.).there was No bitterness in the whole experience...I would recommend this book particularly in todays trouble times when demonic words and arms are spontanously echoed in the name of God.

Book Description
Deloris Jordan knows a thing or two about being a mom. She is the mother of five high-achieving children -- Ronald, Deloris, Larry, Michael, and Roslyn -- a sought-after national speaker on the family, and the volunteer president of the Michael Jordan Foundation. Her galvanizing message on encouraging responsibility and a passion for excellence has inspired parents across the country. Being the mother of basketball's greatest player has given Deloris Jordan a platform, but it's her experience bringing up an accomplished family in a challenging environment, along with her deep commitment to church and community, that gave her the expertise she passes on in this invaluable handbook for parents of children of all ages.Using warm anecdotes and never-before-told family stories, Jordan paints a realistic and uplifting portrait of the potential power of parents. She explores the universal goals that parents set for their children -- self-discipline, responsibility, perseverance, moral values, and the desire to achieve -- and explains the practical tools and strategies theJordan family uses to realize those goals. And through personal examples and wise, plainspoken insight, Deloris Jordan challenges, guides, and encourages parents who long to do everything they can to help their children learn, grow, prosper, and succeed.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for all parents.......2000-07-29
Deloris Jordan's book, Family First is a must read for all parents. This much needed book gives a down to earth look at the Jordan household and the family dynamics which produced 5 successful, balanced children.
The first time I met the author she stood out as a remarkable woman with much wisdom. Her book with its insights and wisdom in rearing children is everything I imagined it would be including the humor and warmth of endearing episodes.
I would recommend it to anyone, but especially to parents.
Husband is the best partner of mother........1998-07-09
"I remember sitting on the patio behind our house with Ray on warm summer evenings."(chapter 7) Everytime she and Ray shared time together. And Ray adviced and encouraged her. I leaned from this book the important role of a husband. "If one member suffers, all suffer together with it ;if one member is honored, all rejoice togehter with it."(1 corinthians 14-26)

A great place to start..........2005-10-26
In preparing for a trip to Gettysburg, I wanted a book that would provide a brief but concise history of the Battle of Gettysburg. Gettysburg: The Confederate High Tide by Champ Clark (part of the Time-Life Civil War series) is the perfect book.
Gettysburg starts a month after the Battle of Chancellorsville, and details how the two armies managed to meet up in this tiny, rural Pennsylvania town. Neither army was fully prepared for what became one of the bloodiest battles and the turning point of the Civil War. Over 160,000 soldiers converged on Gettysburg, and Clark does an admirable job of breaking the three day battle into understandable engagements. Maps are provided to better see troop positions and troop movements. There are dozens of photographs, and the ones taken immediately after the battles are very sobering. There are also fascinating reproductions of paintings by Peter Frederick Rothermel and Paul Philippoteaux. Both artists traveled many miles, talked to hundreds of soldiers and spent years recreating these battle scenes. But where Clark excels is bringing this story to life through stories, quotes and anecdotes.
My only complaint about Gettysburg comes from the fact that it is one of a series of books, and I only read this one. I had a hard time at first keeping track of whether officers were Confederate or Union. Perhaps a list would have made things easier. But this complaint aside, I'll be traveling to Gettysburg with a much better understanding of this historic battle.
Strategy, tactics, and human beings at Gettysburgh.......2002-07-05
"Gettysburg: The Confederate High Tide" is the volume in the Time-Life Civil War series devoted to the most famous battle in American history. Author Champ Clark does a marvelous job of both providing the basic information for understanding the strategy and tactics of the battle as well as providing intriguing details for those more intimately familiar with the story of Gettysburg. For example, there is a photograph of Dan Sickle's shattered leg bone that was amputated on the second day of the battle and which he visited at the Army Medical Museum in Washington periodically for the rest of his life.
The book is divided into five chapters. "A Hard Road North" covers the movements of the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of the Potomac north from Fredericksburg to begin converge on the town of Gettysburg on the last night of June in 1863. A very detailed map of the troop movements is provided. This chapter ends with a look at "Soldiering on Horseback," which looks at the trappings of the cavalry, including a McClellan saddle. "The Push to Seminary Ridge" tells of the first day of battle, July 1st, as John Buford's dismounted Union cavalry held off the advancing troops of Henry Heath's troops along the Chambersburg Pike. Most readers know of the strategic importance of getting the high ground at this battle, and Clark covers all of the key moves in this fatal dance. In this chapter particularly, Clark does a nice job of combining the military maneuvers with fascinating human elements of that day, from the stories of local civilians John Burns and Jennie Wade, to the battlefield friendship forged between Union General Francis Barlow and Confederate General John Gordon, and the story of Lt. Bayard Wilkinson, who commanded a Union battery and amputated his own leg after being hit by a shell.
"Through the Valley of Death" deals with the action on July 2nd, which begins with General Dan Sickle's idiotic redeployment of his III Corps off of Cemetery Ridge and ends with the defense of Little Round Top. The latter, with the pivotal role played by Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain's 20th Maine, is one of the centerpieces of the film "Gettysburg." The consequences of Sickle's blunder is covered in "Fury in the Peach Orchard," which we tend to remember up here in the Northland because General Winfield Scott Hancock ended up plugging the massive hole in the Union line created by Sickles with the 1st Minnesota regiment, whose 262 men attacked an entire Confederate brigade to buy time, at the cost of 82 percent of its men. This chapter ends with "An Artist's Portrayal of the Battle," which looks at the works of Peter Frederick Rothermel, who was commissioned by the state of Pennsylvania in 1866 to do a series of paintings of the battle.
Before the book's final chapter, we get "A Panoramic View of the Last Charge," a 400-foot cyclorama by French artist Paul Philippoteaux recreating Pickett's charge (If you visit the Gettysburg Battlefield, it is a must-see). Of course the high watermark of the Confederacy is covered in "'In Hell or Glory,'" which concludes with "Images of the Aftermath," taken by Mathew Brady's team a couple of weeks after the battle. However, the final two-page spread of the book offers the simple elegance of Abraham Lincoln's handwritten version of "The Gettysburg Address" super imposed over a photographic enlargement of Lincoln about to sit down after giving the most famous speech in American history.
Good history, good modelling!.......2000-06-30
In the usual CAMPAIGN format, but double sized, this book follows the whole Gettysburg campaign, starting with the Army of Northern Virginia "invasion" up to their retreat.
There are the standard "3D" maps showing the actual battle, day by day, and *lots* of period photographs, as well as modern day drawings.
For modellers (my case!) there is plenty of material for uniforms, weaponry, and dioramas. Wargamers also get some attention.
I heartily recommend all of the Civil War Osprey Campaign books: Antietam, Fredericksburg, Manassas, and so on!

Book Description
Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister of Malaysia since 1981, is one of Asia's most successful politicians. Once feared by some as an ideologue of state intervention to restructure Malaysian society, Mahathir is now admired by many for his vision of industrializing his nation into Asia's 'fifth
tiger.'
Paradoxes of Mahathirism is the first full-length scholarly examination of the enigma of Mahathir. As a study of political ideology, it explores Mahathir's ideas on nationalism, capitalism, Islam, populism, and authoritarianism--the core of Mahathirism. Within the context of Malaysia's recent
political history, it charts the evolution of Mahathir's complex world-view to reveal paradoxes, alternating patterns of consistency and contradiction, which help us understand his politics, policies, and personality.

Book Description
The International Summer School of Brain Research, on which this book is based, was organized by the Netherlands Institute for Brain research (NIBR), which has a rich history dating back to the beginning of the century.
The focus of interest in this present volume of
Progress in Brain Research are the few thousand neurons at the base of the hypothalamus that form the biological clock. Attention is focused on the mechanisms underlying the generation of circadian rhythmicity within our biological clock, which is still far from understood. Contributions originating from many disciplines give updates on the latest theories on the molecular and electrophysiological basis of the pacemaker mechanism, and the various approaches used in different species. Attention is also paid to the way the signal of the biological clock is transferred to the rest of the central nervous system. New data on the role of the suprachiasmatic nucleus and its impact on the functioning of the human being is presented. Altogether an excellent volume which will further the understanding of this elusive material.
