In the centuries-old tradition of the true porcelain artist, Astrid de Sartiges creates exquisite little works of art on porcelain tableware. Cups and saucers, plates and platters, bowls and candlesticks are strewn with delicate draftsmanship in lovely colors, featuring dainty florals, striking graphics (an elaborate alphabet in red on a bright yellow plate), hints of whimsy (tiny people walking their dogs past a townhouse facade on a teacup), and exotic touches (a full dinner set sporting scenes inspired by the Arabian Nights). In addition to color photos of the finished product and colored painting diagrams, complete pattern templates are included. The general techniques section, however, as well as the individual step-by-step instructions, are quite superficial, indicating a presumption that readers are already fairly experienced with the craft. Beginners will also be put off by the fact that these specialty paints must be fired in a special porcelain oven. But the beauty of these designs should not be reserved only for the advanced porcelain painter: The patterns are equally appropriate for use with ordinary glass paint that air-dries or sets in a home oven, or with regular craft paint on any applicable surface. These designs are also perfect for devotees of do-it-yourself ceramic-painting centers, which supply bisqueware and glazes and then fire the finished pieces for you. --Amy Handy

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful motifs, great varitey, Great instructions - BUY IT.......2002-04-29

I can't say enough good things about this delightful book. I love it. It is brimming with a wide variety of beautiful designs. From delicate roses to Christmas holly and alpine motifs to charming little mirrors, this book has something for everyone.

The book is made up mostly of projects. The instructions are excellent, including step-by-step directions accompanied by large clear illustrations. Full-size templates for design transfer are included for all the designs in the book. There is also a small section in the back that gives details on color, materials and techniques.

I especially liked the Arabian nights theme with wonderful images of people and architecture to be painted on plates, candlesticks and tea cups. Fanciful gourds with insects painted inside hors d'oeuvres dishes are another favorite. I also loved projects featuring an array of feathers and a large selection of seashells.

Before I bought this book I didn't realize it used paints that required a special porcelain firing oven. I have only used the newer ones that work in a regular oven. However, I am certainly not sorry I bought it. The wonderful motifs can easily be painted on anything using the appropriate medium in similar colors. I know these lovely designs will make it into the many other crafts I do.

    Book Description

From a writer of astonishing versatility, this wonderfully rich collection of pieces is both a memoir  of Philip Hamburger's writing life and a vivid and various record of the world he has lived in. Hamburger first went to work for The New Yorker in 1939, under the aegis of Harold Ross, and he is  still there--six decades and four editors later. He has wandered all over its pages as Our Man Stanley or Reporter at Large, doing Talk of the Town, Casuals, and Notes & Comment, writing Profiles, and more.   And he has wandered all over the map, unearthing the secret souls of some fifty-five American towns  and cities (from Hot Springs, Arkansas, to Butte, Montana) and bearing witness to the horrors of war  and fascism (from Mussolini's bloody corpse hanging upside down in a Milan public square, to the  hungry, hollow-eyed marchers bearing pro-Tito posters through the wrecked streets of Belgrade  after the war).
An old-fashioned liberal--and proud of it-- Hamburger has witnessed almost every inauguration since  1933 (at Roosevelt's first he was perched on the icy branch of a tree), has spied shamelessly on a succession of New York City mayors (he used to live conveniently across from Gracie Mansion), and has constantly championed the voices of liberty (Judge Learned Hand, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Judge William Henry Hastie, Edward R. Murrow).
Insatiably curious, Hamburger strikes for the heart of whatever subject he approaches--whether it's the  famous (Truman, Toscanini, Evita Perón, Eleanor Roosevelt, Vartan Gregorian) or the unsung hero (a waiter who single-handedly sold four million dollars' worth of war bonds). Hitler's aerie in Berchtesgaden is as fascinating to him as the twisting ramps of Macy's package delivery tunnels.  Hamburger never balked at donning a different hat; he quite literally put on a black homburg as The New Yorker's music critic for a year. He took on movies and was the first to venture into the minefield of television, conjuring up brilliantly the wonders and abominations of what he saw in the 1950s on the flickering black-and-white screen.
All these adventures, and many more, are here in this treasure of a book--the work of a New Yorker writer who wrote what he pleased, went where he wanted, and took as much time as he needed. With wit and insight and extraordinary scrupulousness, Philip Hamburger penetrates the darkness and reveals for us the many pleasures he has had talking to these friends in the night.

I'm a great fan of the (old pre-Tina) New Yorker and was really looking forward to this book. It seems to be a selection of the author's worst pieces in the last 60 years. Not up to the old New Yorker standards at all. Not to mention being a bit trendy-lefty (the pieces on the Kennedy an Reagan inaugurals blast any hope of objectivity, and the Clinton election piece is nauseating). Also the type is too large and there is far too much white space, just padding out the length of this thing. Pass, buy Thurber's Years With Ross instead.

Raising Lifelong Learners: A Parent's Guide is a vital book for parents. Beginning with talk as the foundation of literacy, and emphasizing the importance of listening to and speaking with children, Lucy Calkins, longtime education specialist, then moves into the stages of reading and writing: how to recognize an emergent reader, how to foster a young author, and how to encourage a love of books and reading through your own interest and modeling. Additional chapters deal with math, science, and social studies.

Calkin's text is accompanied by extensive appendices by Lydia Bellino, focusing on the role of schools in a child's literacy, including how to pick a preschool or kindergarten, testing and assessment issues, and working together with your child's teachers. Raising Lifelong Learners illuminates the process by which parents can celebrate and support children's skills as readers, writers, and lifelong learners in all fields.

5 out of 5 stars Raising Life Long Learners.......2007-04-07

I purchased this book when it was first published. My daughter was in Kindergarten and my son was in Preschool. I loved the book. When my daughter was in 2nd grade, I loaned the book out to a "friend of a friend" who's 1st grade daughter was having trouble in school. My daughter is now a Freshman in Highschool and my son is an 8th grader in middle school. Needless to say, my book was never returned to me. I have always regretted losing this book, and tonight while I was on the internet, somehow I remembered the title of this book. So, I went to Amazon and found it! I want to let everyone know that I read the book long ago, so I can't remember details. But I do remember loving the book, practicing the suggestions, and I am now proud to say both of my children like school, get very good grades, can do their homework independently, and will read for pleasure. What more could you want as a parent?!! I think the key is to start when they are very young!!

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic resource for parents, or anyone working with children.......2007-01-10

Excellent practical tips, and examples which really get you thinking. A must for ayone who wants their children to love books and learning.

          4 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2005-01-04

This book has had a positive impact on my child rearing. My children are 4, 2, and 3 months. My 4 year old attends a Christian Montessori school where they support the kind of rich learning evironment that Lucy Calkins describes in her book. I have encouraged it at home too: little television, lots of books, free play, use of the imagination, puppets etc. and I am pleased with my daughters overall love for learning. This book is not related to Montessori, but it confirmed a lot of what they do. Well worth the read. I didn't give it 5 stars because I would have liked an appendix of suggested readings she made.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful approach to helping kids explore the world.......2003-03-16

Calkins makes the case for embracing a child's natural curiosity and encouraging their interests into definable disciplines. She spends a lot of time on how to approach writing. She gently points out that it is not initially a fine motor skill to be mastered but an avenue for the child to record his or her own stories and experiences. Her constant message is how to encourage rather than perfect the child's ability which is refreshing in a world of standardize testing. Through sharing of her own experiences she provides ideas on how to help further develop a child's natural inventiveness into lessons on reading, writing, science and math. This is not a hard line method to expose a child to everything available but rather an encouragement based approach to explore ideas with your child.

5 out of 5 stars Creating a Rich Learning Environment.......2003-01-16

_Raising Lifelong Learners: A Parent's Guide_ is full of practical suggestions, many of which are helpful to teachers as well as to parents. The book's principal author, Lucy Calkins, is a teacher educator, yet she considers the teaching of her two young sons to be her most important work. Calkins relates many vivid examples from her own experience.

Although Calkins discusses things parents can do to maximize school success, _Raising Lifelong Learners_ is not a book about helping children with their homework. Instead it tells how to make the home a rich learning environment, how to arouse children's curiosity in all academic areas. Calkins says, " . . . the qualities that matter most in science and math, reading and writing -- initiative, thoughtfulness, curiosity, resourcefulness, perseverance, and imagination -- are best nurtured through the everydayness of our shared lives at home."

Calkins believes in leading children very gradually along the path of learning in all academic areas. She says, "My rule of thumb is to help the child do today what she will be able to do tomorrow. I don't want my assistance to be too far beyond the child's independent abilities or she will be put in a dependent position, always waiting for and wanting assistance."

Calkins places heavy emphasis on both work and play. The latter provides an opportunity for children to develop imagination, resourcefulness, and language skills. Calkins believes that parents, not schools, have the primary responsibility for developing a work ethic in children. This is cultivated through hobbies and projects as well as through chores.

After Calkins discusses the nurturing of language arts, math, science, and social studies as children progress from infancy through middle school, Lydia Bellino, a reading specialist and school principal, addresses school issues in half a dozen appendices. Most of these, such as curricular choices and various assessment methods, can also apply to the homeschool situation.

              Book Description

The role the rural South and its plantation system played in the secession of the Confederate states is well established, but historian Frank Towers contends that we should look just as closely at the South's urban centers. An exemplary feat of research, The Urban South and the Coming of the Civil War sheds light on the dynamics of secession by concentrating on pivotal sociopolitical shifts in the South's three largest cities -- Baltimore, New Orleans, and St. Louis.

Despite having a culture and an economy rooted in agriculture, between 1840 and 1860 the South actually experienced greater growth in its cities than in its rural sectors. Attracted to the cities by jobs in commerce and industry, propertyless white workingmen developed a slave-state variant of the free-labor politics that Abraham Lincoln's Republican Party used to gain prominence in the North. Lacking the sort of national organization that could contribute to the cause through patronage and legislation, parties such as Baltimore's Know-Nothings relied instead on a combination of nativism, labor-supported machine politics, and electoral coercion. By the late 1850s, the Democratic Party dominated the state legislatures of Louisiana, Missouri, and Maryland, and yet it had lost all of those states' largest cities.

Towers shows how the ascendance of urban opposition parties hastened the collapse of the Jacksonian party system. Although they were pro-slavery, urban voters favored workers' rights and stronger municipal government, both of which threatened the landowning society, particularly in light of prospective urban alliances with Washington. Fearing the horrors of mob rule and the slim chances of slavery's survival in an atmosphere of working-class politics, rural planters largely abandoned the traditional Whig-Democrat competition and banded together in a more staunchly secessionist position. The Urban South and the Coming of the Civil War makes clear that this shift played a critical role in placing the South on an unalterable path towards war.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Text.......2004-05-12

I am not a historian, but I have a great interest in the Middle Ages. I wanted a book for reference to the topics and ideas of the times. Upon buying this book, I got much more. This book is not so much a history book in the sense that it doesn't devote its full attention to wars and etc. It is more the history of ideas in the Middle Ages. As such, I found it very readable, and at the same time extremely deep and thought provoking. I have used this book in more research projects that I can count; I practically have the MLA info memorized from it. If you own one book on the Middle Ages, this should be it.

What I find especially interesting is the treatment of religion and philosophy during this period. The book shows the development of Islam, Christianity, the various Heresies, the influence of Byzantine, as well as the classical tradition. I love this book, and even though its thick I have read it twice front to back. It is useful to anyone who is interested in the history of thought in western civilization.

This particular text used to be the standard textbook 40 years ago for teachers and students of Medieval history. Does this mean that this book is outdated or no longer a good text? Not necessarily. The one thing I like about this text is the fact that Artz covers attitudes, arts and literature, as well as the atmosphere of learning that permeated the middle ages. He discusses the shifts that occurred during this period in thinking, languages, religion, etc. The book is a wonderful text for those who are interested in a detail assessment and exposition of the period known as the "Dark Ages." An age that was, in reality, not all that "dark." In the first part of the book, Artz covers the influence of the east (what he calls the "Classical Background"). In this part, Artz discusses medieval Christianity, the Influence of the Jews, Latin and Greek influence, and Islamic influence. The last part of the text covers the trends in literature, art, music, humanists, philosophy, etc. This whole text is a wonderful read for the serious and not so serious student of the history of early to late middle ages. Don't dismiss this good book just because it is no longer THE standard text. That would be a tragic loss.

                          Book Description

It normally takes years for industrial hygienists to develop the strong investigative skills needed to accurately identify the causes of work-related health problems. In far less time, you can acquire successful investigative strategies from this collection of intriguing case studies drawn from the experience of Lester Levin - a safety professional who has been investigating and solving occupational health problems for nearly 40 years.

An Investigative Approach to Industrial Hygiene: Sleuth at Work opens by outlining how the profession grew out of the need to combat the growing threats to health, particularly epidemics, brought on by rapid industrial progress. It discusses the economic, sociological, technological, and legal obstacles that slowed the development of effective industrial hygiene practices.

The 12 case studies read like mystery stories. In "The Fire Next Door," "No Sense of Danger," and "The Plastic Makers' Infirmity," you will see how a veteran industrial hygienist probes into the origins of workplace illness and, in each case, solves the problem. Along the way, your own growing investigative skills will be tested as you yourself look for telltale clues to each mystery.

The book concludes by spotlighting cosmetologists and firefighters - two professional groups with distinctively high exposure to health and safety hazards - and describes how they cope with their respective work-related dangers.

Uniquely engaging and informative, An Investigative Approach to Industrial HygieneSleuth at Work, will serve the diverse information needs of industrial hygienists, occupational physicians, nurses and other health practitioners, plant supervisors, employee relations managers, attorneys, and claims and insurance adjustors.
