Today the name Gene Kloss, NA, is synonymous with copperplate etchings and when this book was first published by Sunstone Press in the early 80s, it quickly became a collector's item. No wonder because her limited edition prints are now becoming priceless on the art market. This 20th anniversary edition, the sole complete source of information on this outstanding artist, contains 81 black and white reproductions on 192 pages and includes a text by noted author Phillips Kloss.

When Gene and her poet-husband Phillips Kloss first arrived in Taos, New Mexico, her first etching press, a sixty-pound machine, was installed at their camp in Taos Canyon by cementing it to a large rock. That press was eventually replaced by a 1,084 pound Sturges etching press purchased from a defunct greeting card company. With the years and the continual dedication came honors, national and international. The Smithsonian, the National Gallery, The Corcoran Gallery of Fine Art, the Library of Congress, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as many others, house the works of Gene Kloss in their permanent collections.

From her spare life on the eastern edge of Taos with neither water nor electricity, but plenty of firewood, kerosene and inspiration, Gene Kloss informed the art world of the special beauty inherent in southwestern images: the churches, the Indian faces, the mountains and valleys, the dances and intricate rhythms of life in a part of the United States that remains essentially unchanged to this day.

Rent Two Films and Buy This Book.......2001-07-23

This is a great tool for therapy with individuals, groups, families, or to expand your own thinking when watching videos. I have used this book with clients of all ages and in parenting classes. Almost all my clients gained insight and were able to view their own issues more rationally after watching the suggested films. The Setting The Scene and Scripting For Therapy sections are particularly useful if you do not have a chance to view the film prior to recommending it. I am anxiously awaiting the sequel.

Perceptive ways to use films for insight and growth.......1998-04-27

Although intended for therapists, this insightful book about using movies to illuminate our own experiences, motives, and choices is very worthwhile for families. The descriptions of movies like "Field of Dreams," "Breaking Away," and "Dead Poet's Society" provide us with thoughtful and perceptive ways to apply what we see to our own lives. The stories of the patients who were able to understand, identify, and change old patterns after seeing them reflected in the films are exceptionally well presented, and the suggestions for aproaches to using the films are sensitive and illuminating. Any parent will benefit from reading this book to gain a better way of thinking about what we show our children and how we can use what we do show them to improve family understanding and communication.

Hugely entertaining two-fisted adventure by two masters.......1999-10-25

Wow! Dashiell Hammett, author of detective classics like "Continental Op", "The Thin Man" and "The Maltese Falcon" teams up with superb illustrator Alex Raymond of "Flash Gordon" fame to create a thriller comic strip. What more could you ask for?

Well, truth to tell this series has more in common with "Doc Savage" or "The Shadow" than Sam Spade. Still it's a rollicking adventure as a mysterious murder kicks off a killer gang's plan to pirate a shipload of gold and slay anyone who gets in their way! X9 mows 'em down with Tommy guns, gats and grenades but they keep coming over land, sea and air!

This is the beginning of X9's career, and is early in Raymond's, too. Hammett left the author's chair at the end of this series and X9, later renamed "Secret Agent Corrigan", became a bit more campy, eventually turning into something of a "James Bond" clone when artist Al Williamson took the strip over after Raymond's fatal car crash. Lots of fun.

Readable Companion.......2003-07-04

This straightforward biography of journalist Eric Sevareid (1912-1992) is worth reading. Author Raymond Schroth details Sevareid's upbringing in rural North Dakota and Minneapolis, his hiring by Ed Murrow, his long career with CBS, and his less than perfect retirement. Readers also learn about Sevareid's adventurous youth, troubled marriages, and bouts with melancholy and emotional insecurity. The book makes a nice companion to Sevareid's superb 1946 autobiography NOT SO WILD A DREAM, but also covers the man's later years. Sevareid moved millions with his sternly eloquent wisdom as he analyzed events for CBS radio and (later) television. The nation lost an important voice when CBS forced him out at age 65 - under a mandatory retirement policy they've since dropped. Sadly, he never wrote much in retirement, nor become a regular contributor to National Public Radio as have aged ex-CBS stalwarts Daniel Schorr, Richard B. Hotellet, and the late Bob Trout.

The author is a Jesuit instructor of journalism and former boyhood fan of Sevareid's broadcasts. Like THE MURROW BOYS, this is a nice, readable companion to Sevareid's superb autobiography.

Good, but not great.......2000-05-28

The author's political beliefs frame this narrative. Does a good job of telling Sevareid's life, but Sevareid himself did a much better job in "Not So Wild a Dream." This book talks about Sevareid's womanizing and so on, but really does little to explain his misery. It does recount his rise and fall and is worthwhile because it does include some good quotes from Sevareid's analytical pieces (he detested that they be considered commentaries) on "The CBS Evening News With Walter Cronkite." Unfortunately, this book just seems to set up a wall between the author and its subject that is difficult to explain. You get a much better understanding of the man in "Not So Wild a Dream," and the book "Murrow's Boys."

From Indian Territory to Mexican.......2002-03-17

This is a profile of the frontier woman---the biography of Delphia Eliza Odell Reoh and her journey from Kansas to Oklahoma in a covered wagon. Delphia's husband was chosen by her mother, and she struggled with tubuculosis. This book chronicles her wild ride in the Oklahoma Land Rush, and encounter with a mad dog. Frontier women struggled with birth, death and bed bugs while establshing a home. They settled in Spokogee--- present-day Dustin. Delphia bore eight children and lost three before they reached adulthood. Delphia's last journey took her to the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas, near present-day Raymondville, where she and her husband established a farm. All are buried in the Raymondville cemetery, but the name endures in the Valley.

This book is for Young Adultsand older. It's a true historical and depicts a more simple and basic way of life. The contents are suitable for any age group. It's more than just bare bones historical facts and dates. It goes to the heart of the people who lived the story. Emotions come to the surface and simple pleasures are relived, fears surface and a wide range of raw apprehensions and a subtle suspense creeps in at times. The key word was survival.

I was thrilled to be able to read this account of my great-grandmother. I got to meet her once when I was very small; little did I realize the life she had lead.

The book takes you into her life. You feel what she feels and you see her life through her eyes. You understand her fears, her pride, and realize the tact she used in dealing with her quiet, intense husband.

The book recounts a time gone past. It vividly describes south Texas and what is was like to live there. You see this young woman who is reticient about south Texas, age to an elderly woman who loves the valley.

It is a book like no other I have read. I recommed it highly.

The real stuff.......2001-01-15

Bruce Felknor takes you into the real world of the merchant marine at war, drawing on obscure ship company documents and often letting the words of the seamen speak eloquently themselves. Felknor lists himself as editor of this book, yet without his fine hand and "bridges" and commentary the parts would be far less than the whole he presents. This is the real thing, folks.

A must read for history lovers.......1999-05-03

Felknor has put together a treasure which covers the role of the Merchant Marine in war from the privateers to the Murmansk Run through excerpts and even entire chapters from hard-to-find books. For example, the story of Raphael Semmes, Master of the very successful Confederate raider "Alabama," comes from books published in 1886, 1900, 1913, and 1985. Fully 165 of the 335 pages of text cover the Revolutionary War to World War I period. Organizing convoys and strategies to overcome U-Boats and surface raiders were learned with great loss of life during the "War to End All Wars." Unfortunately this knowledge was lost by the start of World War II: due to lack of foresight and stubbornest on the part of Naval leaders (both British and American). The chapter "Inside Battles" covers this topic with great insight and honesty. While Felknor's World War II chapters cover some of the well known stories such as the SS Stephen Hopkins, there are many not so well known, but just as poignant. Fascinating was Felknor's extensive discussion of Mulberries, Gooseberries, Lobnitz pierheads, and Phoenixes -- all part of the Normandy harbor created to supply the invasion. There's much more, all very well chosen. Bruce Felknor was a radioman in the merchant marine in World War II. I highly recommend The U.S. Merchant Marine at War, 1775-1945 as a very readable addition to your bookshelf, and an excellent reference book that puts the Merchant Marine role in American history in perspective.
