Book Description

gehry talks: architecture + process

With the completion of the celebrated Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, architect Frank O. Gehry has entered the pantheon of twentieth-century masters. In this wholly unique new book, a condensed edition of the original volume of the same name, Gehry himself offers extensive and illuminating commentary on various aspects of the processes involved in developing his revolutionary designs, including his influences, clients, use of materials, and new technologies.

Gehry Talks: Architecture + Process documents all of his new work of this decade, tracing his evolution from a southern California architect known for his idiosyncratic use of materials and collaboration with local artists, to an international figure whose fluid, hitherto undreamt-of forms surge beyond the aesthetic and technical constraints of the twentieth century. From the titanium-wrapped curves of the Guggenheim Bilbao to the binocular facade of the Chiat-Day Headquarters in California, his innovative structural ideas evoke a sense of freedom and spontaneity while, at the same time, displaying the utmost control. Unbound by guidelines of symmetry or the grid's delineation, his structures spring forth, engaged in a seemingly limitless play of ideas--ever-changing in both the multitudinous combinations of shapes suggested by the form and the depth of the conceptual associations implied by the design. Fish and snake motifs birl upon his building's rippling surfaces, while light follows the asymmetrical trajectories of their metallic folds. Though controversial and daring, his works always possess an elegance that lends warmth and humane scope to each project, regardless of the level of innovation--as evinced in contexts as varying as the complicated, and unrealized, plan of the Lewis House in Lyndhurst, Ohio, or the clarity of the idea behind the Üstra office building in Hannover, Germany.

This generously illustrated presentation features twenty-four projects, including the Chiat-Day Headquarters in Venice, California; the Team Disneyland Administration Building in Anaheim, California; the Vitra Furniture Museum and Factory in Weil am Rhein, Germany; and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. The book features insightful essays by editor Mildred Friedman and architecture critic Michael Sorkin, as well as photographs of buildings that have been completed since the publication of the original volume.

3 out of 5 stars a good introduction.......2006-03-28

What makes this book interesting is its format and organization, as well as the candid discussion of the projects by Gehry himself. What the book confirms, though, is that Gehry's work lacks any theoretical dimension, unlike that of his more serious equals, like Moneo or Siza. Gehry will be remembered one day for pushing the limits of architecture, for his wizardry and creativity. But eventually the repetition of the same forms in unequal contexts raises many questions. Does MIT's science center warrant the same formal expression as a museum in Bilbao? And will it really adapt to the changing demands of its client? Futile questions, perhaps...

5 out of 5 stars Inside the mind of Gehry.......2005-08-23

Gehry talks is a book offering extensive commentary from the great architect himself on his various designs, thought processes, materials used, and clients. It features photos of the buildings, models, plans, as well as sketches showing the evolution of the design from thought to construction.

Frank Gehry is the great modern architect whose (usually striking) projects include the titanium clad Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the stainless steel clad Weisman museum in Minneapolis, Walt Disney concert hall in Los Angeles, and the `dancing towers' or Nederlanden building in Prague to name a few.

He talks about the different approaches taken in tackling a commission. In the case of the Nederlanden building, we see it transformed from squiggles, to various models, before the final building appeared.

He also talks about his relationships with various people; fellow designers and clients for example. He talks about the use of technology like computers in design.

A very good book. To quote a line from the book; `The computer is a tool, not a partner, an instrument for catching the curve, not for inventing it'.

3 out of 5 stars Gehry's essays unpretentious, lack depth.......2004-10-03

The big plus for me in reading this book is that Gehry lacks the pretension of being overly intellectual and doesn't feel the need to wrap himself in some sort of pseudo-scientific process -- as if he himself is an observer of his own, mysterious, secret process. His anecdotes for each project are conversational and reflect a lot of facets of the profession that people see as interfering with design.

On the other hand, I read this book with the expectation that I would get some great insight, some more lessons that I could take with me and apply them to my work. I was disappointed with the depth of insight into his own projects. I got the general sense that each project was a reaction to incidental material in front of him, some vague sense of character he wanted in the work and some of those "real-world" constraints he had to deal with. In other words, the essays weren't into big ideas, not much philosophy, and little depth in terms of projects' evolution. It presents each project as a kind of Rue Goldberg set of moments, more of a quick chronology and sometimes more about how he got the commission than how he got the design.

There are a few moments of good insight in the introduction, before he gets into specific projects. For example, his interest in the drapery of clothing, particularly its representation in sculpture (his example is a bit odd, perhaps) is obvious if you've looked at his stuff long enough, but it's nice to hear as much from him. There is more insight into Gehry's relationships with other people, his clients and a couple of his designers here, and that's a good read to some extent.

The photos are pretty good. However, they don't complement the writing very well, nice as they are. Some things Gehry tries to describe should actually be shown and referenced, but these are mostly PR shots, and the photos are usually aspects of the work, and don't always do a good job orienting you to the project.

Considering how accessible the book's writing is and its relatively affordable price (for an architecture book, that is), I still think it's worth picking up for yourself. Different people will be rewarded differently from it, but it's not on the level of other great architects' writings.

5 out of 5 stars Great insight into the architectural mind of Gehry.......2000-04-02

Frank Gehry's architecture has been receiving a lot of attention lately, and one can often wonder "How do those building get built?" well this book will tell you how the design go from sketches, to models, to the computer, to the final product... The photos in the book of models and the computer renderings are incredibly interesting and help the reader understand what it takes for a Gehry building to be born. Old, recent, and current projects are featured in this book. Definately a book worth picking up.

5 out of 5 stars A fitting tribute to this groundbreaking architect.......2000-02-02

"Gehry Talks" is a thought provoking study of the evolution of Frank Gehry's avante-garde architecture. Anyone who adores modern architecture, or modern art for that matter, would be inspired by and should own this book.

      Book Description

For more than 30 years, Grit Laskin has been building guitars, and his striking inlay work places his instruments in a class all their own. He is credited with single-handedly taking the ages-old tradition of musical instrument inlay from its purely decorative roots into an art form, a means of expression. In his hands, shell, stone, legal ivory and metal emerge as the palette of a re-invented medium. A sumptuous, full-color-throughout, coffee-table quality tome, this is the first book to document the breadth of his work and the techniques he has devised. Grit Laskin is the first and only musical instrument maker to receive Canada's prestigious Saidye Bronfman Award for Excellence. The Museum of Civilization, Canada's equivalent to the Smithsonian, has four Laskin guitars in its permanent collection. Includes an essay on the history of inlay by Chuck Erickson. Photography by Brian Pickell. "(Grit's) work is more than adornment - it's mind-blowingly interesting." - Bob Taylor, Taylor Guitars

      5 out of 5 stars A True Master.......2007-05-15

This book will show you some of the masterpieces created by Grit Laskin, who is not only one of the best luthier for acoustic guitars but a true genius as his inlays are so colorful and original. You will discover what kind of material he uses and how long it could be to make such a work of art.You will understand that the inlay is not only a decoration on the instrument, but that the guitar is also a support for this peculiar form of decorative art. If you could have the sound it would be perfect, but it is only a book....

4 out of 5 stars Nice Coffee Table Book.......2006-09-22

As an amatuer guitar builder I am very interested in the techniques used by other luthiers in their inlay process. This book provided many beautiful pictures of the inlay work of Grit Laskin however it really did not get into enough details for doing the inlay work itself.

I would recommend this book for those that are gutiar lovers that want to enjoy pictures of beautiful inlay art work. However, I would not recommend it for the luthier that is seeking knowledge on how to improve their inlay work.

5 out of 5 stars An exquisite gift.......2004-01-21

Over the years, Grit Laskin has made impressive contributions to the craft of inlay and of guitarmaking. In doing so, he has elevated both to the level of art. His beautiful new book is an in depth perspective on his art. One of the most respected masters in the field, Laskin, is a recipient of Canada's prestigious Saidye Bronfman Award for Excellence In The Crafts and a founder of Association of Stringed Instrument Artisans (ASIA). His book, which features a stunning collection of photos of his work, is another gift to the art.

Laskin begins with a brief biographical sketch which is low keyed, the opening section included photos of Laskin's first basement shop and subsequent modest facilities. We also learn about the artists approach to guitar construction as separate from the inlay process and to the business of guitarmaking. Much of this first section focuses on the collaborative web independent guitarmaking scene of Toronto in the 70's and 80's and the synergy between Laskin, Larrivée and De Jonge and other.

There is also a well done section about the history of inlay and a helpful section on his method for drawing, cutting and installing his inlays. This later section has a brief but effective overview of the tools and techniques and includes excellent photos illustrations. In it, Laskin includes valuable discussions about the role of reconstructed stone and ablam as part of his palette of materials.

The final two thirds of this book is a collection of exquisite photographs of Grit's guitars taken by Brian Pickell. These are accompanied by comments on each work from the author/artist. Through these words and pictures we are given a glimpse into the creative process. Written in a conversational tone this is Laskin's invitation to the reader to eaves drop on the some of the thought processes that led up to each design.

All this being said, Laskin's art, rendered in shell, stone, and wood speaks eloquently for itself. Pickell's photos capture the genius of both the breathtaking overall designs and the super-realistic details which cause these works to soar. This book offers the reader a window into the creative process. Think of it as this exquisite stained glass window with a clear center piece through which we view the work of a master artist.

      Book Description

Emmet Gowin has been taking aerial photographs of the landscape in the United States, Mexico, Czechoslovakia, Asia, and the Middle East for over twenty years. In his most compelling photographs, one witnesses how man's footprint has visually scarred and continually altered the earth's surface. This extraordinary book, published in conjunction with the first major touring exhibition of Gowin's photographs in over ten years, focuses on images created after 1986. That was the year Gowin began to extend his aerial photography explorations in America by recording images of military test sites, missile silos, ammunition storage and disposal facilities, coal mining, pivot irrigation, offroad motor traffic, and more. The book also surveys his more recent works, which focus on other regions of the world, including the battlefields of Kuwait, new golf courses in Japan, and the chemo-petrol industries of the Czech Republic. Gowin's richly toned black-and-white images have been characterized as "immorally gorgeous," since at a distance even his most disturbing images can appear to be beautiful. In this exquisitely produced volume, Jock Reynolds provides an overview of Gowin's aerial photography and places it in the context of his earlier work and that of such photographers as Carleton Watkins, Alfred Stieglitz, Ansel Adams, and Frederick Sommer. Philip Brookman illuminates Gowin's recent work in the Czech Republic, while Terry Tempest Williams discusses Gowin's images from the American West, especially his Nevada Test Site series.

5 out of 5 stars Changing The Earth.......2007-01-09

`Changing the Earth' is a collection of beautiful and compelling aerial photographs that were taken over 14 years. Where Adams has shown us the beauty of the land before man has stepped upon it, Gowin shows us what the land looks like after man has used it. Gowin is one of the best printers (photographic) in the world and quality of his work is very obvious in this book.

      5 out of 5 stars Stunning beauty.......2003-04-25

This book despite it's somewhat horrific subject matter has a beauty so deep and profound it restores my faith in interest in Black and White image making. Beautifully printed it is a book that any budding black and white landscape photographer should own.

5 out of 5 stars Documenting Ruinous Relations With The Land.......2002-06-05

Like a great deal of aerial photography (Bradford Washburn's naturalistic mountain work immediately comes to mind in this connection), Emmet Gowin's meticulously detailed portfolio depicting man's ambition writ large upon the surface of our planet can often be 'read' as much as abstract art as documentary record. As art, this series of images of a wounded planet is so deceptively compelling it is easy to become lost in the sensuousness of the aesthetic moment Gowin repeatedly creates and forget that the subject matter being systematically explored is intrinsically disturbing and of concern. Indeed, the experience of finding so much beauty in landscapes of man-made desolation and ruin is unnerving. Yet it is undeniable that from a distance the patterns on the Earth made by irrigation pivots, toxic chemical ponds, missile burial trenches, mining pits, and numerous other manifestations of human 'development' without limits are endlessly unique and dramatic. Paradoxically, it is precisely this nexus of visually stimulating, geometrically intricate imagery generated in the context of wanton exploitation and destruction of the land that sustains the narrative and aesthetic power of Changing The Earth. One is absorbed in the beauty of the photography just long enough to catch sight and become painfully aware of the pervasive, intensely consequential, problem that demands attention and thought. Thus lessons for the future abound in the pages of this volume! One day our way of taking the Earth for granted by first depleting its resources for immediate gain and then dumping what is no longer wanted or useful wherever is convenient, will be seen as the opulent conceit and obscene luxury that it surely is. Until that day, studies like Changing The Earth bare witness to our collective folly, greed and irresponsibility.

In the 1990s the National Association of Black Journalists became a recognized name. Its members covered the big stories of the decade and also crusaded successfully for diversity in the media.

Since the late 1990s however, NABJ stagnated, largely because of apathy and fatigue. Alarmingly, NABJ and its allies became vulnerable to attack by right- and left-wing critics.

In this 3rd edition of the NABJ story, Wayne Dawkins defines what is right about NABJ, and he points to wrongs that must be corrected. Along the way, he cites important industry developments and social changes as markers.

Dawkins' historical record is a map to steer the association out of rugged waters.

        5 out of 5 stars "Wayne Reigns".......2004-12-22

"Rugged Waters" is a stanza of history of the National Association of Black Journalists from 1989 to 2002. Author Wayne Dawkins states in the preface that the book highlights the annual conventions. The essence of the book is the challenge of the leadership in the organization to create and maintain fiscal stability and membership. The president and the board has potential conflicts of interests in dealing with policies within their own news organizations and convention event sponsors. Should black staff members in newsrooms be the same percentage as the population being covered? Can NABJ accept alcohol and tobacco sponsorship if these products indirectly kill African Americans at alarming percentages? Dawkins shows how NABJ addresses these issues. Running for president in NABJ has often been an uncontested event. "Rugged Waters" does not hightlight the fact that a viable presidential candidate needs endorsements from familiar industry leaders and the old guard journalists. Neophytes in journalism are not considered because they have to pay their dues. Dawkins quotes veteran journalist, Roy Johnson, who states NABJ is not a "must join organization." "Rugged Waters" should be read by every new and seasoned journalist of color. The history of the news organization, NABJ, had its creation through affirmative action. The future is held in the balance by the adage of, not appealing to the youth.

        5 out of 5 stars Must Reading.......2004-05-04

If you want to get an inside look at the workings of the organization representing minority journalists you should read this book. It takes you inside the the National Association of Black Journalists, and by extension, inside the newsrooms of some of the nation's top news organizations. The book details not just the trials, tribulations, and growing pains of NABJ, but also the aspirations, frustrations, triumphs, and failures of some of the minority journalists working in the media. Rugged Waters also looks at some of the major media stories of the past decade and explores how race does or does not impact decisions about coverage of stories. It's a good read and a significant addition to the discussion of media and its impact on the way we view the world in which we live.

4 out of 5 stars If we don't learn our history, we'll be forced to repeat it.......2003-12-05

This is a very detailed account of the NABJ and of black journalists as a whole in the United States. It's not a leisurely read; rather it's a call to action for black journalists to step out of their comfort zones and press on to build a stronger organization than what was left in the aftermath of the 1990's. The NABJ was and is a key foundation for African-American journalists, and this book is a key read for both its proponents and skeptics.

This is an important book. Wayne Dawkins provides
an insider's view of a pivotal decade in the history
of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ).

As Dawkins points out, black journalists, while still
severely underrepresented in print and broadcast media,
are indispensable and invaluable in the coverage of every major event in the 1990s, including the Los Angeles riots,
O.J. Simpson trial, Million Man March and U.S. presidential elections.

However, black journalists and NABJ still face significant challenges, not the least of which is NABJ's effort to grow
its organization in the face of declining membership, attacks
on media diversity and a certain apathy among many blacks in
        the profession.

Dawkins examines these challenges in Rugged Waters
while providing plenty of salient points to ponder.

        Book Description

"This book discovers a universe in one small village. This is a book for the mind and the heart."

        Susan Isaacs, best-selling novelist

When writer Sally Wendkos Olds and artist Margaret Roche trekked to the remote village of Badel in Nepal's eastern hills in the spring of 1993, they were the first western women to go there. They were the first to live with local families in their modest homes, the first to see how the villagers lived from day-to-day. Sally Olds and Marge Roche arrived in the village as strangers and left as "relatives." In 1994 they returned to help establish a library in Badel, to follow up on corrective surgery for two children with cleft lips, and to celebrate the Hindu festival of Dasain with their friends in the community. They came back again and again.

Their book, with Sallyýs words and Margeýs drawings, shows a portrait of life in a village that can be reached from the closest road or airstrip only by trekking on foot for three days over narrow, rocky mountain paths. Badel has no electricity, no telephones, no modern sanitation. Its people live and work as they have for centuries in a way of life that is beginning to change nowýand is sure to disappear within our lifetime.

A Balcony in Nepal takes you into the village and reveals lives led according to the rhythms of hundreds of years agoýhow babies are born, how children learn, how couples court, how women live, how the dead are honored. You'll share the adventures of "Grandma Sally" and "Grandma Marge," and like them, you will be enriched by the ancient wisdom of the people they came to know and love.

This book is for travelers who want to know more about the day-to-day lives of their sherpas and porters; for armchair explorers who want to experience exotic landsýfrom the excitement and chaos of Kathmandu to the serenity of isolated hamlets; and for all who seek inspiration from the spirituality of another culture. It holds special resonance for women, who can put themselves in Marge and Sally's sandals as they explore their own life issues in the context of another culture.

        5 out of 5 stars A Balcony in Nepal:Glimpses of a Himalayan Village.......2002-12-15

Visitors to Nepal are frequently young trekkers. A Balcony in Nepal gives us a heartwarming, compassionate view of village and homelife through the eyes of two older women. They describe the unique beauty of the mountains and the people with whom they have interacted in repeated visits to the village of Badel in words and sketches that will remain with you. It is a very touching personal account that goes far beyond most travel books.

5 out of 5 stars There's more to Nepal than trekking.......2002-12-10

There's more to Nepal than climbing, trekking or the teeming streets of Kathmandu. Through thoughtful writing and lively drawings, Sally Olds and Marge Roche invite us to share their involvement in the life of a remote Rai village. We learn about joyous festivals, meet fascinating people and become part of the struggle to live daily life without the amenities we consider necessary. The freindships they make stir our imagination. And by recording their thoughts and reactions to what they've seen, they raise interesting questions on the effect tourists are having on the village and Nepal itself.

        5 out of 5 stars Marvelous journey.......2002-12-04

The author, Sally Wendkos Olds, has brought experience and talent to use in telling of her experiences in a remote village. Marge Roche's illustrations enhance the story and stand alone as beautiful works. I highly recommend this book to any who would like to experience a very different way of life. Beautiful book!

        4 out of 5 stars A Balcony in Nepal.......2002-11-21

Sally Olds and Marge Roche in A Balcony in Nepal conjure a small Nepali Rai village with the magic of an open heart and appreciative senses. The warm people for whom a library is planned and built are drawn by Marge and brought to life by Sally. Both travellers are welcomed into the daily lives of the families in Badel and both travellers bring the Nepalese people into our daily lives. We read about this trek into Sally's expanded consciousness with relish and respect, and come to love the simple village people and admire their hard lives.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read for Travelers to Nepal.......2002-11-20

For any Westerner traveling to Nepal, this is a must read. Ms. Olds has the usual beautiful travelogue descriptions, but she adds the critical insights that can only come from repeated visits to this unusual country. The illustrations by Ms. Roche of the country and the Badel villagers add another layer of beauty for readers of this wonderful book. Be sure to buy this book and read it on the long plane ride over. And if you are not lucky enough to make the trip, read the book and you'll feel like you did.

          Book Description

In this vivid and intensely frank memoir, retired Marine Colonel Dick Camp recounts his daily experiences as "Lima-6" -- the commander of Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines -- from June 1967 through January 1968. As much as it is about the Vietnam War, Lima-6 is also a candid account of the camaraderie that a Marine infantry company forges in battle, and the compelling human drama of an infantry company at war as seen through the eyes of a lonely leader upon whom all others depend for guidance and strength.

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY AN OUTSTANDING TRUE STORY.......2002-09-17

A tremendous book recounting battles, fire-fights, ambushes, as well as the challenges of leading 18 and 19 year old marines in war time. Gives a good idea about the physical hardships and danger that our men encountered in Vietam. Capt. Camp also admits near the ending that he was "very, very, glad to get out of Vietnam." An honest insight !

          5 out of 5 stars Been There..........2000-08-31

Very even and factual account. I would encourage persons interested in USMC history to read this account of one man's perspective of events that occured in the second half of 1967, in I Corps. I have to tell you that I am slightly prejudiced: Captain Camp was my Company Commander in Viet Nam. He is the one against whom all others are judged. Skipper Camp is not only the finest Officer I encountered in the Marine Corps but, also, a real human being.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Look Back.......2007-07-06

The book is a fascinating look back at life in the early 1900's
in 4 counties of the northern Cumberland Plateau area of Tennessee.
There is a wealth of old photographs--at a guess, about 250 or more
in the book's 120 oversize glossy pages--maps, and descriptions in
the book. The emphasis is primarily on the coal camps such as Wilder
in Fentress County, with a lot of detail about the railroads that
served the coal mining communities, and not as much about the logging.

The book is divided into histories of some of the towns in each county
(the book calls them "cities", which is a very generous term). Then
you'll find histories of the timber and lumber companies, and the coal
companies. There's a nice chapter on the people--biographies of some
of the residents (mostly coal miners in this book). There are brief
chapters on the Wilder and Zenith strikes (1919 to 1937 or so) and
some excerpts from the 1930s from Jamestown and Livingston papers. All
chock-full of photographs of the people and places--including a couple
of photos of hangings from the late 1800's: it would appear that the
local law enforcement preferred using trees to building gallows.

The book is a nice companion piece to Ghost Railroads of Tennessee,
although the emphasis is on a much smaller part of the state. On a
personal note, I'm a caver, and most of the areas in the book are familiar
to me. Of particular interest is the town of Wilder, close to the gorge
of the East Fork of the Obey River. The population peaked at about 2500
in 1925 or so, with large hotels and a thriving coal business. What is
left has a population of about 60--the hotels, the mines, the railroad,
etc, are all long since gone and grown over--looking at the old photos
is a real treat! A highly recommended book.

                      Book Description

Systems Analysis and Simulation in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences William E. Grant This hands-on approach provides guidance to the step-by-step applications of systems analysis and simulation to questions about ecological systems. At the same time, it explains general principles without requiring that readers have a strong background in mathematics, statistics, or computer science. Chapter 1 traces the development of systems ecology introducing basic concepts, while Chapters 2 through 5 present the four phases of systems analysis: conceptual model formulation, quantitative specification of the model, model validation, and model use. 1986 (0 471-89236-X) 338 pp. Bioeconomic Modelling and Fisheries Management Colin W. Clark Discusses the management of commercial marine fisheries and the relationship between the economic forces affecting the fishing industry and the biological factors that determine the production and supply of fish in the sea. Topics focus on methods of preventing overfishing and overcapitalization, economically effective and practical forms of regulation, management of developing fisheries, natural fluctuations of fish stocks, and complexities of marine ecosystems. 1985 (0 471-87394-2) 291 pp. Methods in Marine Zooplankton Ecology Makoto Omori and Tsutomu Ikeda Encompassing basic principles, procedures, and research problems, this book serves as a complete guide to current methods used in the study of marine zooplankton. The techniques are equally applicable to small organisms and to the larval stages of larger, commercially important organisms. Chapters start with a brief, but well-summarized introduction to zooplankton, followed by field sampling strategies and laboratory methods, and then conclude with estimates of productivity and analysis of community structure. Each method is described in detail, including a discussion of the problems inherent in using it. 1984 (0 471-80107-0) 322 pp.
