Book Description
The HarperCollins Dictionary of Art Terms and Techniques, 2nd edition, contains over 3,200 clear definitions of terns encountered in thestudy and practice of the visual arts and in their literature. It covers all forms of easel and mural paintings, drawing, sculpture, the graphic arts, photography, ceramics, and mosaic. There are entries on schools, styles, and periods, but the chief emphasis of the book is on the materials and methods of the artist. Materials are defined in terms of compositions, source, use, and characteristic properties; processes and techniques are defined in terms of their practical application and results. Tools and equipment are concisely described and illustrated with copious line drawings.
Customer Reviews:
What artists work with, clearly explained.......2003-10-24
There are plenty of dictionaries of artists around, in book form or on the web. Far fewer are the books to explain how fine and applied artists go about their business and define the techniques and materials artists use. This is essential knowledge for young people preparing to study art or art history, and I'd certainly recommend this book to them. But for everyone who loves paintings and other art objects, the extra technical knowledge this dictionary gives will add to the enjoyment and enlightenment gained from visiting a gallery or museum. It is an excellent introduction to a complex subject, by Ralph Mayer of Yale University School of Art, and first appeared in 1991.

Book Description
Alan Moore brings a new line of Graphic Novels to Avatar starting right here! Hand picked by Alan Moore, this book is a stunning adaptation of some of his songs, poems and writings turned into sequential art, by an amazing group of European artists never before seen in America! This is also the first American work by staggering talent Juan Jose Ryp who will certainly be providing many fantastic Avatar projects in the years to come! Also included is an exhaustive listing of Moore's work in other mediums as well. This deluxe edition book features an introduction by Warren Ellis.
Customer Reviews:
Obscure Alan material, great art!.......2003-03-21
Several of Alan Moore's obscure songs are adapted here by a wide range of great European artists including the first US work from a great artist called Juan Jose Ryp who is drawing another Moore project. Also includes a very interesting history of Alan Moore's work outside of comics. If you are an Alan Moore fan, you will dig it!
Very Disappointing...........2003-02-04
I'm a HUGE fan of Alan Moore; He's written some of the greatest graphic novels of all time (From Hell, V For Vendetta, Miracleman, Batman: The Killing Joke), and his run on Swamp Thing changed the face of horror comics forever, giving birth to a style of writing that would spawn huge talents like Grant Morrison and Neil Gaiman, among others...
So it's with a VERY heavy heart that I report that not only did I NOT enjoy Magic Words, I actually regretted buying it. The book was solicited (By publisher Avatar Comics) as a collection of short stories; It's actually a few of Moore's song lyrics interpreted by a group of European artists. The art was varied, ranging from decent to ultra-detailed, but the stories themselves (Actually the lyrics..) do NOT make for compelling reading. If reading song lyrics and looking at an artists interpretations of those lyrics is your thing, you'll probably like Magic Words. I found it to be very pretentious and self-important. I'll be very careful about checking into the content of Avatar books before buying from now on.....(Sorry Alan! You're STILL my favorite Writer, though!)

So Intresting .......2007-03-27
I really enjoyed reading this book. Cary Grant might be very complex and
difficult person to live with.Yet he is gentle and kind. That is enough.I
simply feel sorry that Maureen Donaldson didn't marry him.She Couldn't
realize how much she was loved! She will also regret not marrying him for the
rest of her life!! (Sorry for my bad English)
Reading Past Midnight.......2007-01-02
I give this book 5 stars because there are not too many books that keep me awake at night. Usually even a good book puts me to sleep sooner or later. Not this one.
Maureen Donaldson had a four year relationship with legendary Hollywood actor Cary Grant from 1973-1977 after he had retired from film making. Her descriptions of meeting and first getting to know Grant made me feel like I was almost experiencing it with her. I could definitely identify with her feelings of awe and being overwhelmed that Cary Grant was interested in her. I would have felt the same way. As she got to know him and spend more time with him, she saw that he was only human (aren't we all). In fact, he was very human, with many of the same fears, insecurities and childhood hurts that so many of us have to deal with ourselves.
I agree with other reviewers who feel this book is not a trash Cary Grant book. I don't think that was her intention. I don't think less of Grant now than before I read the book. From everything I have read about Grant in this book and elsewhere, it seems he had a very rock-solid core to him. He comes across as a very loyal friend, surprisingly generous at times (when the mood struck him), tender-hearted and kind.
Maureen tells in her book how Grant read a daily devotional each day of the year out of a Christian booklet he had a subscription to. After they broke up Maureen said she continued the practice of reading those daily selections herself.
She took Grant to an Alice Cooper concert (with Grant in disguise). He hated it, but the fact that she talked him into going proves to me that he really cared about her. A man his age going to an Alice Cooper concert? That is love.
I do wonder why she wrote this book. I guess I should not try to speculate. According to Maureen, Grant tried to get her to marry him and even enlisted Jennifer Jones and her last husband to offer their home as a wedding site.
Even after reading the whole book I still can't help but think Maureen was nuts not to marry him.
..........2006-05-11
I've just finished reading this and i'm a little shellshocked. Not because I feel Grant has been villified but perhaps merely because it shows such a debonair and enigmatic idol of mine as a true fallible human being.
Like the other reviewer commented, I too thought it seemed to be written with a fair amount of objectivity. It did not come across to me as a bitter and delibrate attempt to trash or undermine Grant. It does come across, however, as a bit of a tacky and harrowing romance novel, even the presentation of the book conveys such an image.
I think if you're a Cary Grant fan that wants to find out a little more about Archie Leach and is willing to accept the fact that their view of Cary may be tarnished in the process; then go ahead and read this, it is an interesting and (from what I can tell) balanced read.
Let's all hope he was happy in the end.
Great Book.......2003-11-09
I felt like I knew Cary Grant much better after reading this book. It seems to have been written with some objectivity. The book makes you feel as though you are right in the middle of their relationship. I really enjoyed reading about the details of the most dashing man of the classic movie era. There will never be another Cary Grant, unfortunately.

In the Company of Horses: A Year on the Road With Horseman Mark Rashid
ASIN: 1590480430 |
Book Description
Historically the world of equestrian travel has contained an exciting mixture of unique men and women. Some are adventurers seeking danger from the back of their horses. Others are travelers discovering the beauties of the countryside they slowly ride through. A few are searching for inner truths while cantering across desolate parts of the planet. Then there is Messanie Wilkins. She was acting on orders from the Lord!
In 1954, at the age of 63, Wilkins had plenty to worry about. A destitute spinster in ill health, Wilkins had been told she had less than two years left to live, provided she spent them quietly. With no family ties, no money, and no future in her native Maine, Wilkins decided to take a daring step. Using the money she had made from selling homemade pickles, Wilkins bought a tired summer camp horse and made preparations to ride from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific Ocean. Yet before leaving she flipped a coin, asking God to direct her to go or not. When the coin came up head several times in a row, one of America's most unlikely equestrian heroines set off.
What followed was one of the 20th Century's most remarkable equestrian journeys. Accompanied by her faithful horse, Tarzan, Wilking suffered through a host of obstacles including blistering deserts and freezing snow storms, yet never lost faith that she would complete her 7,000 mile odyssey.
"Last of the Saddle Tramps" is thus the warm and humorous story of a humble American heroine bound for adventure and the Pacific Ocean. The classic tale is amply illustrated with photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Insirering Story.......2006-11-02
This is one of the most incredible stories I have ever read. A 60+ year
old woman riding a horse across the U.S. with no real support from anyone.
This is what movies are made of, only this really happened. Young of old this is a very readable book with a real possitive story and I recommend it to everyone. If I'm ever down I just think of her ride and I get up.
The Courage to ride.......2002-11-26
At the age of 62 it seemed that Mesannie Wilkins had reached the end of the road. Her farm was about to be repossessed by the bank and the doctors had giver her less than two years to live.
She was told to take it easy. Friends and relatives invited her to stay with them for the brief time left to her. But Mesannie refused to go quietly. With her last bit of money she bought Tarzan, an ex-summer camp horse, and with only 32 dollars left in her pocket set out, on horseback, from her home in Maine.
Her goal - California.
"Last of the Saddle Tramps" is Mesannie Wilkins' recollection of this 7000 mile journey. This tale is a wonderful mixture of the humorous horsey incidents (like her Tennessee Walker trying to walk back to Tennessee), the incredible physical hardships and the wonderful hospitality offered to her by her fellow Americans during the ride.
Mesannie Wilkins' style of writing is, much like herself, warm, humorous and unassuming. She has a wonderful gift for, with only a few lines, painting accurate images of the people encountered on the trail.
Most importantly, however, this is a tale of the incredible courage of one woman who, faced with seemingly unsurmountable odds, refused to give up on her life and her dream. Mesannie Wilkins is a true inspiration, today as much as during her lifetime.

Book Description
This book examines the origins and development of the Polish 'Winged' Hussars. Using many years' painstaking research drawn from unpublished Polish sources, the author provides a rounded view of the training, tactics, appearance and experiences of these legendary and fascinating warriors. Most dramatic of all Hussar characteristics were the 'wings' worn on the back or on the saddle, although not all Hussars wore them, and their purpose has been fiercely debated. The Hussars terrified the Turks, Tatars, Muscovite boyars, Ukrainian Cossacks and Swedes, who did everything to avoid facing them directly in battle.
Customer Reviews:
Ignorant spreading his "knowledge".......2007-07-16
Author (Richard Brzezinski) is an ignorant on the subject, using only limited few sources, and shunning from discussion when challenged - to make it short: this book is in no way a reliable source of information.
My favorite Osprey.......2006-10-08
Seeing that I had never heard of either the author or the illustrator, I was pleasantly suprised by the professionalism of this Osprey Title. The author sticks for the most part to the typical osprey title style, with sections detailing tactics and training etc. However he differed from the rudimentery "bullet point" writing I have seen in so many osprey sections. The author, Brzezinski combines first hand sources with his own writing succsessfully keeping the book both informative and interesting. The illustrator also for the most time does an excellent job. His figures are detailed and well-proportioned they are well detailed and paint a excellent picture.
Overall an excellent book for a fascinating period.

Like opening a time capsule.......2005-11-21
It was great to get a peek into the life, via this narrative, of someone who lived went through this unique experience.
While referring at many times to the Indians as "savages", she nonetheless admired and respected some of them while showing disdain for others. Through her experience I believe we see that we can't paint a people with a broad brush. I think she learned this lesson well.
It was interesting to find out how many whites were held for ransom by the Indians. She devoted a whole chapter to this.
She also related a dispute that she had with another captive. They were going to write a book together but that fell apart when the other captive "stole" the manuscript and told the story as her own.
If you are of a religious persuasion, you may find inspiration in her use of faith to overcome the obstacles put in front of her.
The book is also sprinkled throughout with historical photographs that relate to her story.

Women's Indian Captivity Narratives (Penguin Classics)
ASIN: 0806503890 |
Book Description
Travelling to Idaho with an emigrant train from her home in Kansas, the nineteen-year-old Mrs. Kelly was captured west of Fort Laramie by a band of Oglalla Sioux on July 12, 1864, and held prisoner until December 12 of that year, when she was released at Fort Sully in the Dakota Territory... Her book is clearly one of the most distinguished examples of the last period of the captivity narrative... Fanny Kelly's narrative is valuable not only because it is an intrinsically exciting firsthand account, rich in details of Indian life, told by a brave and intelligent woman; it is especially valuable because it expresses the tension between two conflicting nineteenth-century images: the Indian as savage aggressor and the Indian as hapless victim-- a tension which illustrate the uneasy mingling of hostility and guilt central to the whole American Frontier experience. --From the introduction by Jules Zanger, Southern Illinois University
Customer Reviews:
A Plains Pioneer Story.......2006-03-25
A riveting memoir by Fanny Kelly about her capture by the Sioux (Dakota) in 1864. Kelly's small wagon train was attacked in Wyoming en route to Idaho from southeastern Kansas. She spent five months as a captive, her life under constant threat as she and the Sioux walked and rode, often fleeing the army, through Montana and into the Badlands of North Dakota where they starved and froze, their provisions having been destroyed by the army.
Kelly's individual story straddles the convergence of two civilizations in implacable opposition with terrible things being done by both sides. The events in Kelly's story take place only two years after the Minnesota Massacre of 1862 and the brutal white response.
If you have read and enjoyed the grittiness of Elinore Pruitt Stewart's Letters of a Woman Homesteader you may enjoy this. Both books give a glimpse of the way Americans once lived and thought (nary a convenience store or microwave in sight). This book, however, as gripping as I found it, was also horrifying and sad. We experience individual acts of cruelty within a larger context of cultural incomprehension and intolerance. Tit for tat acts of revenge by hurt and angry people. Relevant for today? I think so.
My Captivity Among the Sioux Indians.......2000-02-17
I just finished reading a borrowed copy of Fanny Kelly's book and was fascinated by her account of her experiences. Her treatment by her Indian captors may give one a "politically incorrect" view of our native Americans, but her account is documented and proven true. It is well written, inspiring, and educational -- a book I must have as a permanent part of my library.
19th century captivity narrative.......1998-02-27
In the 18th and 19th centuries, captivity narratives were rather popular among those who lived to tell about their abduction by Indians, and Fanny Kelly's account is a good specimen of this type of writing. I was impressed by the rather harsh lifestyle that the plains Indians endured in their nomadic wanderings. This book neither praises nor belittles the Sioux, but paints a fair portrait of life among them. It's not an outstanding book, but it is good, instructive, and worth getting in the paperback edition.

She Survived.......2007-10-06
Narratives by women who were captured by Indians once comprised an integral part of the literature of the American Frontier, defined by Frederick Jackson Turner as the "meeting place between savagery and civilization." Although many such narratives were lurid, dime-novel accounts, akin to the supermarket tabloids of our own time, Fanny Kelly's was the real thing.
At the age of 19, she was traveling west with her husband and family when she was captured by Oglala Sioux warriors west of Fort Laramie on July 12, 1864. Hers is a remarkable tale of survival by an intelligent, strong young woman and she was finally released at Fort Sully, Dakota Territory on December 12, 1864.
MY CAPTIVITY AMONG THE SIOUX INDIANS is one of the best captivity narratives as well as one of the last. If you were with an emigrant train on the Oregon Trail, you would know Fanny Kelly and her story.
Her book is available in a number of formats and editions. Mine is an old paperback edition with an excellent introduction by Professor Jules Zanger of Southern Illinois University. I gave it five stars because I found Fanny Kelly's writing clear, easy to understood, and accurate insofar as I could verify it.

Book Description
Interest in the science, technology and medicine of India under British rule has increased in recent years and has played an important part in the reinterpretation of modern South Asian history. David Arnold's wide-ranging analysis combines a discussion of all three fields across the entire colonial period--from the 1860s through to Independence--offering both a survey of recent scholarship and an original overview. Arnold assesses the role of science in the making of colonial India and in the fashioning of Indian responses to British rule.

Interest in the science, technology and medicine of India under British rule has grown in recent years and has played an ever-increasing part in the reinterpretation of modern South Asian history. Spanning the period from the establishment of East India Company rule through to Independence, David Arnold's wide-ranging and analytical survey demonstrates the importance of examining the role of science, technology and medicine in conjunction with the development of the British engagement in India and in the formation of Indian responses to western intervention. One of the first works to analyse the colonial era as a whole from the perspective of science, the book investigates the relationship between Indian and western science, the nature of science, technology and medicine under the Company, the creation of state-scientific services, 'imperial science' and the rise of an Indian scientific community, the impact of scientific and medical research and the dilemmas of nationalist science.
Customer Reviews:
Surprisingly little studied till now.......2004-04-21
It is a little ironic that in some histories of science throughout the world, you can find greater coverage of India before the British arrived, than during the colonial era. Partly, perhaps, it may be from a desire to describe the purely Indian contributions to science.
But what happened in science, engineering and medicine when the British ruled India has been relatively neglected, compared to both the pre and post colonial eras. Arnold attempts to redress this deficit here. He describes how indigenous Indian scientists and doctors learned from and also influenced the British.
Especially in the area of tropical medicine. From their African colonies, the British also had experiences in this field. But India had much higher population densities and a more highly developed infrastructure than in Africa. Plus the Indians had perhaps better, though incomplete, knowledge of solutions.
It is still surprising that up till now, there has been little scholarly work done on this subject. One might speculate that previous British authors might have concentrated on science done in Britain itself. And Indian authors might have wanted, even if only subconsciously, to deprecate the colonial period.
