A Guideline Indeed!.......2001-10-31
The book is not a very entertaining read, but it is not meant to be. In my capacity as Project Superintendent, I used this book extensively in the renovation of a major health care facitlity. It was particularly helpful in dealing with code issues, room sizes, layout, etc as we added a surgical suite to the facility. It is not meant to be an absolute "Bible", rather a very helpful reference work. Thank's to this book, we were able to avoid many mistakes before they happened, and assist the owner in realizing the full potential of his facility, exceeding even his own expectations. While it will not enable the layman to design and build a health care facility, it is a must read for owner and contractor alike. I consider it the best (money) ever spent!

Rufferto has a legitimate grievance about not being named as the senior partner, in this title! If you are talking about intelligence, he certainly does, and here he comes into his own. However, he still does not have hands to hold those swords. Hilarious stuff.
Sword and sandal and silliness.......2007-01-07
Groo is Aragonés's wandering swordsman, mighty of sinew but not the greatest of heroes in the brains department. In fact, his dog Rufferto is a good bit smarter than him.
This book follows Groo into the land of King Ravenus. Much to Groo's delight, his first experience of that kingdom is a good brawl, an uprising of peasants against the king's soldiery. Ever defender of the underdog, Groo launches himself against the well-equipped army
-- then the soldiers state that they are officers of the law fighting against thieves, so Groo turns and fights with the soldiers instead of against them,
-- then the peasants explain that the tax burden is heavy and unfair, so Groo turns again,
-- then the soldiers counter that King Ravenus is their lawful ruler, and Groo turns again,
-- then the peasants respond that the kings taxes have taken the food from their children's plates,
-- then Groo decides that a good fight shouldn't be spoiled by little things like picking one cause or the other, so he'll alternate killing one fighter from each side. Both bands, of course, vanish at the propsect of having to face his implacable swordsmanship and impenetrable stupidity.
Groo is a kid-safe, silly adventure from one of Mad Magazine's best-remembered alumni, and of interest for that reason alone. The Groo character has had surprising longevity, having long outlived at least one of the many publishers that hosted him.
As much as I enjoy Groo occasionally, it's not epic artwork and the stories tend toward the silly. It's probably good for grade-schoolers, or for late-night moments when you're too tired for anything more demanding.

A very funny graphic novel.......2003-02-02
Groo is a barbarian's barbarian: muscular, an expert swordsman, and incredibly *less* intelligent that his faithful canine companion, Rufferto. When Groo wanders into the land of King Ravenus, a greedy tyrant who is taxing his people into oblivion, confusion follows in his wake. To make matters worse, King Ravenus' wizard, Anakrony, uses Rufferto for his time-travel experiment, transporting him to a horribly dehumanized future (our own). Groo wants Rufferto back, and is willing to destroy just about everything to get him.
This is a very funny graphic novel. The artwork, which reminded me a lot of the old Mad Magazine issues, caught my eye, and the story kept me reading. If you want a funny, light-hearted (and light-headed) read, then this book is for you!

What can you say about Always the Young Strangers, other than it reads as well in 2004 as it did in 1953. Sandburg's look at his boyhood in Galesburg, Illinois has all the elements of opening a time capsule and looking back at the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
I am most fascinated by Sandburg's relationship with the Krans family who lived outside of Galesburg on a small farm. The respect that Sandburg accords the Krans' sturdy immigrant spirit permeates the entire book. Read the description of John Krans' death at the end of the book. It brought tears to my eyes.
Sandburg's shakey relationship with his father also attracted me to the book since I had the same type of relationship with my dad. August Sandburg never appreciated his son's writing talent. It took the mother, Clara, to nurture her son's mighty pen.
When I worked there in the 1970's, natives of Galesburg would tell me how much Sandburg hated the city. Always the Young Strangers tells a much different story. The love that Sandburg had for Galesburg and western Illinois jumps off the pages of this book. What a great read!
Always the Young Strangers Always a Good Read.......2000-06-24
Carl Sandburg's Always the Young Strangers is not a new book but that is what makes it such a compelling read. In an era marked by the popularity of the memoir, Sandburg's tales of growing up in Galesburg, IL at the end of the 1800s and the beginning of the 1900s allow the reader to hear a distinctive voice no longer with us speak again. This is not any ordinary voice either but voice of a poet clearly in love with words. Though his boyhood stories are simple, they are rich with detail that allow us insight into Sandburg's future as a poet and as a most notable biographer of Abraham Lincoln--in it, for example, Sanburg recalls attending a funeral procession (probably one of many held across the country in a time long before TV allowed the nation to mourn together as we did when JFK was buried) for U.S. Grant and watching from atop his father's shoulders as the various mourners passed. Clearly, this event, along with others he mentions, fed Sandburg's curiosity about the Civil War and led him to write his many volumes about Lincoln. If, like me, you enjoy autobiography and memoir, you will enjoy Always the Young Strangers.
A Poet Remembers His Prairie Town.......2000-05-27
If one hears the name Sandburg, the first thing to come to mind is probably "Fog" or "City of Big Shoulders." But in reading this wonderful memoir, we are reminded of what a fine prose writer the man was. The tale of his struggling Swedish immigrant parents finding their way in late nineteenth century America and young "Charley" as he liked to be called, as the name Carl marked him as a foreigner, is a fascinating glimpse of a bygone time and place. The interesting jobs that young Carl took on, such as traveling the back roads selling stereo-optican views, and his conversations with a civil war vet are rewarding and insightful. I believe this is a wonderful read for anyone with a love of biography, history, or simply good storytelling.

A classic, but not a very good book.......2003-09-04
The author, Chuck Taylor, is a legend in the field of defensive handgunning. This, however does not automatically mean that a book written by him would be any good. A fact that is emphasized by this book, although it is a classic. When this book was first published in -82, it may have been the cutting edge of combat handgunning, but so much has changed since then.
If a book is supposed to be "the complete book" of just anything, and the page count is less than 300, I became very suspicious. In this case, there are less than 180 pages, and only about 140 of those comprise the real text part (including pictures). The rest is filled with glossary and appendixes.
The book starts with the history of handgun. Next it handles care and cleaning of the gun. In my opinion, you should not learn the maintenance of your weapon from a book like this; you should stick to the instructions the manufacturer has provided (for liability reasons mainly). Next the author discusses customizing the gun. Now this is a thing I do not understand: Why buy a gun that is not ready to use out of the box? But then, I shoot Glock. Well, Taylor is a fan of Colt 1911, and it shows in this book. After this, there is a chapter on holsters, which is fine but the age of the book shows here somewhat. Next is a chapter on stopping power; a chapter that should have been left out. As I said, Taylor is a fan of Colt 1911 and .45. After all this, Taylor finally gets to the shooting part. There is pretty much all the basic stuff on gun handling, but it is presented in such a hurried way that you are not really supposed to learn anything from this? Or are you? For example, Taylor uses full two pages to present different shooting styles with a flashlight. Is that adequate or what? Then there is ten pages of tactics? Enough said on that. There is also a chapter on mental conditioning. In favor of Taylor, he is one of the few gun writers who have the courage to say that the color code of readiness (condition white, yellow, orange and red) was not invented by Jeff Cooper. The last chapter is about training and handgun competitions. And that's it, folks! 140 pages makes "the complete book".
I believe I made it clear that the contents of this book don't match the title. That still doesn't mean that this book is worthless. You just can easily find books on the subject that are better than this. This book serves best as an collectible for those who are interested in the subject, and not as an instruction book for those who are worried about their safety.
The all time classic on the subject. Must reading........2002-12-30
As someone who has attended some classes instructed by Taylor, you realize that out of thousands of columnists and gun writers, he is clearly 'been there and done that'. Now there may be many people with as much combat experience as he has attained, however Taylor refined his technique, and has done so for a very long time. He is not out there teaching the Swiss Army, La Legion, or Seal Team Six because he is a couch crusader. Taylor is also set apart from most because he can write. Taylor has distilled the majority of his experience and techniques into this book. This book is the original Combat Hangunnery Book, and it is already to its Fourt Edition. Now naturally some material in this book is dated, but I have this along with the current edition because it fills in some of the theoretical underpinning of his current techniques. It also lets you see that the techniques have not changed all that much in the last 10 or 15 years. I wish I had bought this book when I first started to practice with hanguns as I would not have necessarily bought the same guns. I now, of course, use a 1911, as does everyone else eventually.
Get this book, dry practice, then go take a Taylor course, you WILL NOT be disappointed. He will stop you from wasting time and ammo developing bad habits, and rapidly improve your skill, yes even cops could learn for Taylor.

This book covers the technical basics fairly well, if you don't take the claims of scientific validity too seriously. It does not address markmanship fundamentals in enough detail to be useful; it recommends formal training to accomplish that task. The overpowering ego makes the reading a bit difficult at times, but the data is mostly there.

I ordered this book when I needed to master the diagnostic criteria for a wide ranger of endometrial pathology commonly seen in biopsies. I was amazed by how easy a read it is, as well as how informative and useful the book has been. A little pricey, but definitely worth purchasing.

Practical, well written and easy to read........2006-11-29
I enjoyed reading this edition of this book. As a pathologist in practice, I occasionally buy new editions of books as a review. Much better than going to a meeting for CME. The material in this book is particularily "real world" and directly applicable to everyday practice. Highly recommended also to new pathologist or those in training.
Easy to read.......2006-08-21
This is a concise and easy-to-understand overview of the topic. Unlike a lot of textbooks, this one can be read cover-to-cover without too much effort. Once you've read it, you're equipped to handle endometrial currettage specimens in your daily pathology practice. The only down-side is that many of the pictures are in black-and-white. But there are color photos as well. Overall, this is a wonderful book!

This book, I feel, is a "must to read" book for diagnostic pathologists who are involved in signing-out practice. I appreciate color microphotos, and well-organized texts, describing a variety of endometrial lesions, in this new edition.

Disorders of menstruation are a major cause of morbidity in women.
