Book Description
Newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst and his legendary California estate occupy a place in the public imagination through Orson Welles's Citizen Kane, but Kane's brooding Xanadu was merely a caricature of Hearst's exuberant castle at San Simeon. This new book sets the record straight and proves that, for once, truth is better than fiction.
Here for the first time is the real story of Hearst Castle, and of the productive 28-year relationship between Hearst and his architect, Julia Morgan, who collaborated on the magnificent 165-room estate set on 250,000 breathtaking acres near the remote seaside hamlet of San Simeon, halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Drawing on previously unpublished correspondence, and illustrated with never-before-seen historic photographs as well as more than 150 stunning color pictures, Victoria Kastner chronicles the evolution of this extraordinary hilltop, with its two spectacular pools and its astounding collections of fine art and antiques. Sprinkled throughout with stories of the famous parties hosted by Hearst and his companion, movie star Marion Davies, and their celebrated guests, this book brings to life America's most glamorous country house.
259 photographs, 157 in full color, 9 x 113/4"
Customer Reviews:
Hearst better understood now.......2007-01-29
I enjoyed this book, and the details of his life relating to the building of this wonderful American treasure. I wish there had been more photos showing the details of the fine art and antiques collected from Europe early in this past century. Also it would have been worthwhile to show much more and better photos of the architectural elements of stone moulding, stucco detail, doors, tiles, ceilings, floor designs and iron work.
Precious Gift.......2007-01-11
I actually bought this for a gift for my neighbor, she had been looking for it for a while and she was very excited and said the pictures inside were fantastic.
ONE MAN'S CASTLE.......2006-09-23
Hearst castle is just an amazing tribute to one man's enormous ego. I am glad that it is preserved as a set piece for Hearst, for that is what he intended all along. This book captures the signifigance of the estate, the images are well concieved, though not as crisp as expected, and the text is informative. This certainly is not the definitive book on Hearst Castle, but it is well worth the purchace none the less. If you have any interest in Hearst Castle, or gilded age extravagance in general, then i cant imagine you being disappointed in this book.
The Biography of a country House.......2006-06-25
Fantastic book exceptional pictures and loaded with written details. Usually in a book like this you get one or the other here you get both! A must read and viewed book,a bit spendy but worth every cent!
Hearst Castle Fans Should Not Miss This!.......2003-02-19
A first rate account of the building of "La Cuesta Encantada" with new information I have not found in other Hearst Castle books or by taking the castle tours many, many times since I was a little girl. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Can't wait to visit the castle again with this new knowledge.

covering conservation concerns.......2001-07-25
This book is and excellent resource for institutions and collectors, who handle art. Put out by the Smithsonian Institue, the leader in art preservation, it lists how to protect art objects, in terms of: climate control handling, lighting, and general care. The book covers what objects can be damaged by what outside sources, and how to best prevent from enviormental damage, through proper storage techniques. It also gives resources for conservation suppliers and conservation centers.

Customer Reviews:
The most focusted and useful book on the subject!.......2002-05-12
Without a doubt this book is the most user friendly book on technology I've read. It is packed with essential information for everone using digital photography today. It provides help in setting up shots as well as streamling your workflow and a lot more. There is nothing extraneous out this, it's great from start to finish!
DPFGD will be dog-eared before you know it!.......2002-02-16
This book is a must-have for designers and photographers who are moving towards a fully digital production process. DPFGD is a well-organized linear treatment and full of extremely useful guidance relevant to both the broad creative issues and nitty gritty details that we face in our profession. Varis is precise, clear, experienced, and is well backed up by artfully selected examples on every page. This is one book that I expect to look back to again and again.
Great for the Design Student.......2001-12-13
Just fininshed reading Lee Varis's new book. It's a great overall treatment of digital photography for any student of graphic design or even the seasoned art director that may be new to digital technology. The technology discussed is current, and in common use professionally. The discussions of critical concepts of resolution and color are presented in a user friendly, easy to grasp manner.
This book should well prepare the designer going into their first digital photoshoot. It can help in understanding how to achieve all the technology is capable of, and how to get the most from the shoot.
Digital Photography for Graphic Designers.......2001-12-12
This is a must have book for designers and photographers, especially designers of the old school who have been more then a little afraid of going digital and there are many out there. For the beginer designer, this book puts on the page what they will be told about the digital work flow as it exists today.
Lee Varis takes the reader on a digital ride explaining more then enough to get the reader to appreciate the digital workflow.
A must for designers.......2001-12-12
Even though there are many books as there are about digital imaging, none discuss in detail the relationship of designers and art directors with the process (and people) involved with creating digital images.
This book covers a great many of the complexities of digital imaging with a clear, casual style that does a great deal towards clearing up many misconceptions people have about digital photography. Not only does it cover that, but the book goes further into aspects such as pre-press, proofing, editing and printing, and and does so with a very enjoyable, non-technical narrative. Anecdotal writing, along with supporting photography (beautifully printed) helps lend creedence to this book. A necessary text for anyone in graphic design and/or advertising.

Join Steve DeMasco as he shares the story of his ascension to 10-degree Shaolin kempo black belt and appointment as honorary ambassador to China's legendary Shaolin Temple. Rare techniques! Over 350 photos! A must for every Shaolin enthusiast!
Customer Reviews:
Go to CMAOD dot com to learn real Shaolin and many other martial arts for cheap -- avoid phony teachers!.......2007-08-26
Shaolin kung fu is without question beautiful and if you wish to learn complete kung fu forms for only seven ninety nine per video disc, or slightly more for English-Chinese DVDs, visit the website that begins with the first letters of "Chinese Martial Arts On Disc": CMAOD dot com. "CMAOD dot com" offers every kind of kung fu form and style you would ever wish to learn from beginning to end: traditional hong gar, almost all styles of Shaolin, Dim Mak, traditional hong fist, animal styles, many fighting self-defense videos, wudang, er mei, and dozens of other complete systems of kung fu, including weapons, forms, and self-defense. You name it, you can learn it, without having to spend thousands of dollars to learn from phony kung fu teachers. Many Americans don't know that this website allows you to buy the best instructional VCDs and DVDs available. Visit the "wushu for youth" section of CMAOD dot com and you can buy the wushu fundamentals VCDs or DVDs that will teach you from the beginning stages. Visit the Shaolin section and you will find more fundamental Shaolin VCds or DVDs taught by two allegedly real Shaolin monks called Shi De Juan and Shi De Jian. I don't know how real their monkhood is, but they are gifted martial artists, and you can learn complete forms in many styles of martial arts. You've got to see this website to believe it. The owner Bill is a great guy, and offers great discounts on his website. You've got to visit CMAOD dot com to believe it. There are literally thousands of kung fu artists here that are "at least" as good as the so-called real Shaolin monks in China and America, and many are far far better. With a few bucks, they can be your teacher. If you can't find a good teacher in person, here's your only chance to learn real Shaolin or other styles for almost nothing. Ever wish you could find "the secret kung fu manual" to teach you various styles? Well, here it is in video disc or DVD form. Buy these VCDs or DVDs and enjoy learning great martial arts from top Chinese masters without worrying about being fooled by phony kung fu masters. Finally, every American has access to real kung fu learning at his or her own pace! I have written three international cover stories for Inside Kung Fu and Wushu Kung Fu magazines (now Kung Fu magazine) and can vouch that CMAOD dot com is the best source for learning authentic Shaolin and other kung fu step-by-step without being bamboozled by and kowtowing to phony practitioners of fake kung fu styles or schools. Learn at your own pace, according to your own interests from the best Chinese masters and grandmasters for less than eight dollars for VCDs.
Big Waste!.......2007-05-31
Having trained in the martial arts for over 12 years now, as well as being familiar with Steve DeMasco, I should have known better than to waste money on one of his products. I have been suckered before by him and this will be the last time. I gained nothing out of the nonsense in this book.
Moving and inspiring book from master DeMasco.......2004-12-30
I am mainly a karate, kali/escrima, and chin na (which is also part of kung fu, especially styles like eagle claw, tiger claw, and praying mantis styles) student and teacher, but I really enjoyed this book, as I also study Hung Gar kung fu and tai chi and have been exposed to several other styles of kung fu in the past, such as 7-star praying mantis, wing chun, white crane, northern ching kung, and southern black tiger.
I'm no master of kung fu, just an enthusiastic and interested student who appreciates the historical as well as martial and technical importance of the Chinese arts and whose karate reflects their influence, as my karate is quite a bit more fluid and flowing than your typical karateist (although without sacrificing speed and power and focus, which is what I specialize in training advanced students and black belts on). Although I claim no great skill at kung fu, my kung fu teachers have said the way I'm applying the principles to my karate is very valid and the modifications I've made have their full approval and blessing (and, before anyone says anything, my fellow karate teachers usually like my karate too, and some of them are my students).
Before getting into my own comments about the book, I noted the previous very negative review, saying DeMasco doesn't do the stances properly and uses the wrong names, but I was already aware of most of those points, but the reviewer is technically correct although I must point out that since DeMasco is a direct student of Tak Wah Eng, who certainly knows what he's doing, I'm inclined to give DeMasco the benefit of the doubt in regard to his overall level of knowledge and skill. For example, when he was training at the school and the students were asked anyone knew and could demonstrate the iron wire form, only DeMasco stepped forward and was able to perform it.
My only concern is whether the monks are practicing real kung fu these days or wu su. Although wu su has become the national sport of China, it's not the same as kung fu. I understand that some styles, such as eagle claw, have basically died out on the mainland, and that the only instructors are either in Taiwan, or in the U.S., such as Lily Lau or Dr. Yang Jwing Ming. I have three video tapes of monks at the southern Songshan Shaolin monastery doing their forms, which confirmed this suspicion, as they are wu su, not kung fu. I don't recall which monastery DeMasco visited on his trip to China, perhaps it was the northern monastery, and things are better there.
But getting back to the book, part travelogue, part autobiography, and part martial arts manual, in this book master Stephen DeMasco gives the student some of the essence of his 30 years of experience and training in the martial arts and kung fu. DeMasco first regales the reader with stories of how he first became involved with kung fu (he was turned away at the door of the studio or kwoon for 5 years, but persisted and was finally allowed to train). The story of how he came to be invited to the shaolin temple to perform for the abbot is truly inspiring and a great tribute to the author. As a result, he is the only westerner ever to be fully certified as a master by the Shaolin temple.
Most the book is devoted to photos presenting the exercises, techniques, and forms from several kung fu styles, including some weapons work. These include praying mantis, black tiger, five animals, and Hung Gar. In addition there is a presentation of a single saber, double saber, and staff techniques, although the text doesn't say what style they're from.
Finally, DeMasco shows the very rare Hung Gar iron wire or iron thread form, which is hardly ever seen, and which represents the highest level of the internal training of the style, and is still not widely traught or known. Overall, an enjoyable book covering Demasco's distinguished and inspiring career along with a very nice presentatin of many techniques drawn from the favorite styles of master DeMasco.
Things aren't as they seem,.......2003-02-04
Extremely fascinating to read.
An honest opinion (read the whole thing).......2002-08-09
I bought this book because I had read a bad opinion on amazon.com. I had read a previous article about Steve Demasco and his certification from the Abbott of the Shaolin temple. I was skeptical and I wanted to see for myself just how bad the book was.
The book lived up to my low expectations when I first saw it. It's a typical Ohara cookie-cutter book. The pictures are full body shots that are taken from a distance, which prevents you from seeing details, especially in the self-defense techniques, and the layout is unimaginative and predictable. I also found it hard to follow the "Iron Wire" form, which played such a pivotal role in his success at the temple.
But then I actually read the text. I was impressed with Mr. Demasco's sincerity. The little things that made him seem more real; like on the back cover where he lists his titles, there is a quote "These are titles I continue to earn." I particularly appreciated his retelling of his initial meeting with the Abbott of the Shaolin temple in ch.8. I was also struck by his honesty when he was reluctant to tell anyone about his certification. He was "certain that if this (certification) got out to martial artists, somehow they would find a way to discredit it."
I'm an experienced martial artist (I am not affiliated in any way with Mr. Demasco's system) with more than 15 years in the arts as well as a school owner. I have seen many fads in the arts and was skeptical of Mr. Demascos. But I found the book worth reading and even entertaining on a very human level. It's a story of his journey, successes, and mistakes. One that I think is easily relatable.
Although I would have appreciated some better technical pictures of his techniques, I feel it's a good addition to a martial artist's library. For it's human value, I gave it 4 stars.

Customer Reviews:
Very Helpful.......2007-02-12
I needed this book for a Flat Pattern class that I'm taking, and this book has been so helpful in explaining with step-by-step guides how to alter basic style into anything that I want. This book is very helpful for people who are interested in becoming fashion designers. You must know how to alter clothes and what your end result will look like. I highly recomend this book.
basic.......2006-07-03
The book starts with the assumption that the reader already has a "commercial basic pattern that has previously been altered to fit the individual". (found in the introduction) To that effect, it commences to show the reader how to ALTER the pattern into different styles to suit the reader. It's not meant to show you how to create a pattern from scratch. Compared to other books I checked out at the library, this was very concise with easy to follow illustrations. I thought it was a great book because it really aided me in making my own patterns. I'm pretty petite, so it's hard to find patterns in my size. Once I found a junior pattern that fit me (which was insanely hard), I used the book to alter the dimensions to create other looks that I would otherwise not be able to find commercial patterns for.
Incidentally a good book for making patterns from scratch is "Basic Pattern Skills For Fashion Design." It starts off using the drape method to get the pattern then proceeds to the flat method for alterations.
I liked learning pattern making with this book........2005-10-10
I liked learning pattern making with this book. It doesn't illustrate how to draft a pattern from scratch like some other books, my favorite being Dorothy Moore's book for that. I used the eighth scale patterns in the book, made a zillion of them, and used those little patterns for "pattern labs" for each example and each style. I took out the spiral binding and put it in a big three ring binder and taped my pattern over each completed style with drafting tape. I learned slash and spread and the pivoting method with great ease thanks to this book.
Not what you think........2003-07-10
This book is written from the viewpoint that you already have a perfectly fitting bodice pattern, which you created from a store bought pattern. It gives you different style ideas, but no detailed step-by-step instructions. For instance, they tell you to remove the waist dart by combining it with the side dart. They show you a drawing, but no detailed instructions. I've been making patterns for 6 years, and I remember starting out totally confused about the whole moving darts issue. It took me an entire school semester to figure it out. This book is confused. It makes you design using store bought patterns (beginners stuff), then gives you vague directions that only a professional could understand. Don't waste you money.
Beginners Bible.......2002-07-15
I received this book when I was first beginning to experiment in drafting my own patterns, and I will tell you that this book is worth every penny if you want to be a fashion designer or just want to sew your own clothing ideas. Excellent for beginners, as it is more pattern manipulation (changing a commercial -store bought- pattern to your own design, very easy). If you are quite advanced (ie.Already know how to change patterns) this might not be the best book for you, as you might find it a little elementary to your knowledge, but can be a great reference from time to time when you are trying to remember how to change those pesky bust darts into a mid-yoke.
A must have for all who dare to push yourselfs beyond the boundaries of the boring old Simplicity's and Vogue's!!

Book Description
When Norwegian Vikings first raided the European coast in the 8th century AD, their leaders were from the middle ranks of warriors known as hersirs. At this time the hersir was typically an independent landowner or local chieftain with equipment superior to that of his followers. By the end of the 10th century, the independence of the hersir was gone, and he was now a regional servant of the Norwegian king. This book investigates these brutal, mobile warriors, and examines their tactics and psychology in war, dispelling the idea of the Viking raider as simply a killing machine.
Customer Reviews:
Vikings.......2007-04-22
Osprey's third title in the Warrior series, this book combines twelve beautiful plates with both informative and absorbing reading.
Viking Hersir.......2004-02-15
Yet another great one from Osprey. Great easy to read info and history on Vikings and the illustrations are flat out amazing. Highly recomended for anybody interested in the Vikings as well as reenactors and SCA types!
It's About The Viking Warrirors, Not Just the Hersirs.......2003-07-13
The hersirs were apparently the Viking commanders, but this book is about the Vikings whether they were commanders or not.
As in the other Osprey books, a prime reason for getting the book is the illustrations. If you want to know what the Viking might have looked like who killed the English king's reeve Beathuheard with an axe to the head in the late 8th centuries, check out these drawings.
The Vikings were scary dudes.
Halfway There.......1998-05-28
Does little or nothing on its supposed thesis of showing the development of the hersir from the free farmer-warrior. Too much space wasted on showing a system of catagorizing swords which then is never used to show anything. One of the worst things I've ever seen from Osprey, though still an okay book. You are better off getting the Elite series #3 on Vikings.

Scholarly AND readable!.......2005-09-21
Professor Laband draws on his extensive knowledge of late 19th Century South Africa to trace the origins and course of the lesser-known, but politically significant conflict between the Boers of the South African Republic (a.k.a. the Transvaal) and British colonial forces. Deftly defining the war as a collision of two radically different military cultures, he takes a middle path between traditional historical perspectives, which have often taken either the Afrikaner view of a divinely-ordained victory, or the British outlook, which regarded its defeat as an aberration in the largely-triumphant advance of British rule.
Laband clearly describes the events preceding and during the war, so that those less familiar with figures and issues of that era in this part of the world will gain an understanding of a pivotal point in British-South African relations.
Book Description
A best-seller in its
First Edition,
Scale Development: Theory and Applications, Second Edition has been extensively updated and revised to address changes in the field and topics that have grown in importance since the
First Edition. Widely adopted for graduate courses in departments such as Psychology, Public Health, Marketing, Nursing, and Education, this book will prove beneficial to applied researchers across the social sciences.
New to the Second Edition:
- Figures and practical tips for students
- New section on face validity (Chapter 4)
- Substantially expanded presentation of factor analysis (Chapter 6)
- New chapter (7) on item response theory (IRT)
- Coverage of qualitative procedures and issues related to differential item functioning (Chapter 8)
Praise for the First Edition:
"Very readable, well organized, and straightforward. I would recommend this book for practitioners, graduate students, and faculty members who are seeking a practical, rather than a psychometric, treatment of scale development. This book offers a clear overview for those interested in the development and validation of measurement scales."
--EVALUATION PRACTICE
Customer Reviews:
Practical introduction to measurement issues.......2006-11-24
This book is a beautifully written account of measurement issues in the social sciences. It is a great resource for anyone who is interested in developing their own instrument or who would like to learn more about measurement theory.
clear but a little simplistic.......2006-03-16
This is a nice resource for researchers completely unfamiliar with the process of measure development. The biggest limitation of the book is that it falls short in actually presenting equations for the statistics mentioned. Thus, it is a good place to start if you have little exposure to this process. However, if you plan on actually running a series of studies to create a new measure, then you'll want to augment this book with some real statistics books.
Scale Development : Theory and Applications (Applied Social Research Methods).......2005-10-03
This book was very helpful, although it does get a bit technical when it comes to the statistical explanations. For non-statisticians, it might be a bit difficult to understand. However, overall it is a good resource to have when designing a health survey.
Very helpful resource.......2005-08-25
This short volume is an excellent overview of how to create scales and indexes from survey items. The author assumes familiarity with the concepts behind reliability and validity, so the book is best used a supplement to an already developed measurement foundation. I highly recommend adding this to your reference library, I am sure you will refer to it throughout your career.
Nice overview of the scale construction process.......2004-10-03
If you've never developed scales for survey research before, this is probably one of the most readable and actionable books describing the process step by step. Browse through it in your local library before you buy a copy. Highly recommended.
Book Description
This book teaches basic statistics to educators in a clear, concise format. Using examples related to the school and the classroom, it impels the student to better grasp and appreciate the application of statistics to education. The second edition offers a more comprehensive text for students in statistics courses who have to carry out a research project, or for educators who want to study their own practice. It includes two new chapters-an overview of research designs, and a guide for students as they conduct their own research project. The focus is on understanding concepts, the rationale for applying and using the various statistics, and the interpretation of the results. "Practical Statistics for Educators" is accompanied by the second edition of "Workbook to Accompany Practical Statistics for Educators."
Customer Reviews:
wonderful .......2006-11-10
This product was delivered in a timely fashion in wonderful condition. Thank you!
Practical statistics for educators.......2006-07-05
What can I say...is there any statistics book out there that's really exciting? NO. But, this book does give excellent common sense and useful examples to explain each statistics term given.
Practical Statistics for Dummies.......2003-05-15
If you've taken a stat course and need a refresher or if you're taking your first course this book is a must. Easy to read, clear instructions on how to use statistical formulas and what all the symbols mean. I wish I had gotten this book earlier. In my opinion this is the best book you can purchase as a reference or in addtion to a text. If you are totally lost about stats, buy this book.

Book Description
Many scientists and technologists would like to carry out their own statistical analyses without reference to a professional statistician. Often, however, they have no knowledge of statistics or otherwise do not know how to apply it to research and development problems. The first edition of Statistics in Research and Development was written for these people. The second edition brings the book up-to-date. The text is divided into two parts; the first introduces basic but very important statistical techniques whilst the second part presents the modern powerful methods of data analysis that are particularly useful in modern research and development. Problems are provided at the end of each chapter with worked solutions provided at the end of the book. A problem-centered approach is used throughout and care has been taken to choose problems with which the scientist or technologist can identify. The results of the statistical analyses are reinterpreted into the language of the scientist. Mathematics is kept to a minimum and the assumptions underlying each technique are clearly explained. All the techniques introduced are powerful and proven, and commercial computer programs are available for many of them.
