From esteemed author Brian D. Coleman comes a thorough exploration into the origins of the design and philosophy of the Arts & Crafts movement in Great Britain--the roots of which are inspiring a fresh new approach to the more traditional American Arts & Crafts style. Coleman leads an inspiring and beautiful tour of ten of the most historic Arts & Crafts homes in Britain, from William Morris's Red House in England to Macintosh's Hill House in Scotland. < BR>

4 out of 5 stars Not for the home designer.......2007-06-18

The "Historic" part of the title must be taken seriously. All of the houses are very big and open to the public. This is not a book for anyone wanting to duplicate Arts & Crafts style. There are much better books for that purpose. The book is fine, but a minor glitch occurs on pages 134-135. The same painting shown in two photographs shows that one of the photos is mirror-image.

5 out of 5 stars Ten Magnificant Homes Beautifully Illustrated.......2006-04-13

This is a beautifully illustrated book depicting ten magnificant houses from the Arts & Crafts period in Great Britain. These homes dating from the late 1800's and early 1900's reflect a time that seems quintessentially England. You almost expect to find Sherlock Holmes or perhaps Lord Peter Wimsey to come around the corner.

The homes are architectually impressive, but this book is mainly on the interior style and decorations. In many cases, such as Red House, the architect designed everything about the house from the structure itself down to the dining room table and the candlesticks and glasses to put on it.

Needless to say, these houses were not built for the common ordinary people, but were the country homes of the very well to do. Most of them were not royalty but successful businessmen. Just to think of cleaning them now seems like a great deal of effort.

As an added benefit, all of these homes are open to the public, and information is given as to how to visit.

    Book Description

The use of wax, paper, clay, and other materials to prevent the effects of heat, fire, smoke, chemical reactions, colors, and glazes from altering or contaminating the surfaces of work is very popular with ceramicists. However, learning to use these techniques can be a long and frustrating process, particularly when complicated by considerations of the state of the clay and the form of glazing to be used.

In this book Peter Beard discusses the techniques of masking and resist and gives guidance as to how best to use various materials and firing methods to achieve a wide range of finishes.

    Book Description

Francesco Scavullo is one of the leading image-makers of the last half century-a photographer whose celebrity portraits and glamorous fashion work helped create the look of an entire era. Along the way, he has also shot many nudes-striking, sensuous images that are inimitably Scavullo. Now, for the first time, a group of these nudes are presented in one stunningly designed volume.

Scavullo's subjects include both men and women and range from supermodels (Linda Evangelista, Stephanie Seymour, Jerry Hall) and movie stars (Rene Russo, Sylvia Miles) to dancers, musicians, denizens of the demimonde, and personal friends of the photographer. Affordably priced yet glamorous, this book will be irresistible for anyone attuned to fame, fashion, and the human form.

    100 illustrations, 6 x 8 1/2"

FRANCESCO SCAVULLO's images have appeared on movie posters, albums, and the covers of Rolling Stone, LIFE, Time, Town & Country, Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Mademoiselle, Glamour, and Cosmopolitan, among other magazines. His work has been collected in five books, including, most recently, Abrams' Scavullo: Photographs, 50 Years.

DAVID LEDDICK is the author of several books, including The Male Nude and three novels. He lives in Miami Beach and in France.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Glowing Self-Confidence in Idealized Images.......2001-01-06

Before discussing this book, let me mention that most parents will feel this book is not appropriate for children. Although the nudes are modestly and tastefully done, these images would be "R" rated in the movie theater.

Francesco Scavullo is best known for his portraits and fashion photography. He is one of the best known photographers to emerge in those fields around the time that Richard Avedon was becoming popular. His nudes reflect that strength in the sense that his portrait and fashion-style poses work best. In many cases, the poser's nudity is limited to seeing a neckline and shoulders unencumbered by the distraction of a line of clothing. For that reason, many of these images don't really seem like nudes at all.

This book suffers from three serious problems. First, the page size is extremely small. As a result, the photographs are never very large and sometimes are almost microscopic, when combined into a series over two facing pages. You lose a lot of the effect that way. It's like trying to look at fashion and portraits in Reader's Digest size. The editors made up for this by doing a very fine job of selecting photographs that look awfully good for such small reproduction sizes.

Second, there simply are not that many images in the book. To get a fully satisfying flavor of Mr. Scavullo's work would have required at least twice as many. I do not know if this is because there were few outstanding nudes to choose from, or on account of limits imposed by the publisher to keep the price down. If there were not that many high quality nudes available, a better solution would have been to have included fully-clothed shots of similar posings to put the nudes into a context.

Third, the work comes across as much too glossy and healthy looking to be real. Despite the claims in the introduction that Mr. Scavullo's strength in these images was to see the "real" person rather than an idealized person, I found most of the images looking much too shiny and vibrant to be anything other than an idealization. The work clearly is designed to be flattering to the poser, as well. There's just a little too much "appeal" put into the shots, like a Las Vegas neon sign. Where humor was put into the images, I found it usually didn't work for me.

On the positive side, seldom do I see a book where I like as high a percentage of the photographs as I do in this one. So the editors deserve a kudo.

Impressive also was that a nude photograph of Mr. Scavullo appears with his biography. He felt that he should not ask others to do what he had not.

So, I gave the book back one star for these positives, raising it from a two star to a three star rating.

Even if you do not buy the book, I hope you will have an opportunity to see it and form your own opinions of these photographs. This book presents many opportunities for refining your taste in photography.

Here are my favorite images in the order in which they appear:

Jay Johnson, 1969 (head and shoulders version)

    Helmut Berger, 1969 (head version)

    David Sabedru, 1991

Kate Mulder, 1992 (eyes downward version)

    Dana Patrick, 1990

    Cindy Crawford, 1990

Linda Evangelista, 1990 (series of head shots from behind)

    Claudia Schiffer, 1992

    Naomi Campbell, 1989 and 1990

    Margaux Hemingway, 1975

    Brooke Shields (color), 1991

    Wale, 1993 (series)

Sterling St. Jacques, (1978) (See if you can do this pose!)

Sandy Spener and Karla Wolfangle (color), 1971

    Hiram Keller, 1969

I suggest an exercise in visual image-making for you to follow on from what you have seen in this book. Begin with a bare table. Then begin adding still life elements until it seems the most "real" to you. As you add the elements, feel free to change the compositions to learn what causes you to see a more "real" scene. Make some notes of what you learn, and take photographs that you can attach to the notes.

Then come back to this book about two weeks later, and see how you would have changed the posings, the make-up, and lighting of these images to have made them more "real" for you.

Seek truth, as well as beauty. Otherwise, you will always be overwhelmed by the sheen of attractiveness . . . and miss the beauty that comes from stark openness.

3 out of 5 stars Just lacking something.......2000-12-29

I admit I'm not a fan of Scavullo, but I like to think that I have an appreciation of the work. There are some tremendous images here, but overall there is just something missing. It's difficult to pinpoint, but there is very little emotion that I felt coming from these shots. I've seen more of his work that actually moved me. None of these had that effect. It's not bad and from a technical standpoint it's okay. However, I was expecting more than that.

        Book Description

Nikolai Sukhanov stood at the center of the Russian Revolution as a founding member and ideologist of the Petrograd Soviet and as an editor of the leading opposition newspaper. His eyewitness memoir of the revolution includes Lenin, Trotsky, Martov, Chernov, Tsereteli, and other important figures. Found guilty at the show-trial of 1931 and victim of a trumped-up charge of spying for Germany, he was shot in 1940 and rehabilitated in 1992. This book chronicles his life against the backrop of the Russian Revolution.

        Book Description

Boldly going where few others have gone before, Michael Finkel has spent a dozen winters journeying across six continents in order to write about the wonders and eccentricities of the world's snowy regions. In this collection of his finest work-part seat-of-the-pants adventure, part cultural exploration, and peppered throughout with humor and insight-Finkel takes the reader from the underside of an avalanche to the summit of Kilimanjaro. He partners with a gang of Kazak herdsmen in the remote peaks of China; he launches down the slopes of Iran as he learns about the Ayatollahs' Byzantine skiing rules; he goes through the torturous Marine Corps mountain warfare training; and he takes on New York City on cross-country skis.

With rare skill and insight, Finkel vividly recreates the thrill of flying off an Olympic ski jump in Lake Placid, the excitement of gliding through virgin snows on a remote Alaskan peak, and the exhilaration of taking off into the unexplored mountains of interior Greenland. In turn, ALPINE CIRCUS becomes the adventurous ride of a lifetime, a tour through a unique world with a unique guide that is sure to thrill both armchair travelers and Arctic explorers.

5 out of 5 stars Love skiing and traveling?.......2001-02-01

If you have a passion for skiing and traveling, this is the book for you! It's an easy read - several short stories about the author's ski adventures in the U.S. and abroad. A very enjoyable book that's hard to put down...you just want to keep reading on to his next adventure.

4 out of 5 stars Great read for anyone who loves mountains........2000-08-24

Most ski writers are middle-aged-plus travel hacks more interested in the hotel than the hill. Not Finkel. Almost uniquely among widely-published ski journalists, he's more interested in descents than dinner, and it's fun to travel vicariously through his work.

Alpine Circus is essentially a compendium of columns originally published in SKIING magazine. All are interesting. Most are funny. One -- the piece on Sarajevo -- is intensely moving.

Four stars out of five. While very enjoyable, the book doesn't fully display Finkel's remarkable talent as a writer. Hopefully, future collections will. You'll see a lot more of his work... he's still a mere sprat.

5 out of 5 stars A book for any skier to enjoy.......2000-03-14

A great collection of unforgettable skiing stories that takes you around the globe to some of the most remote areas of the world. After reading every authors stop, you feel as if you've been there also. Easy to read, funny, and worth reading again and again...

        4 out of 5 stars recommended.......2000-02-22

Three thumbs up. Now I don't have to launch myself off a 40 meter ski jump or attempt a 60-degree couloir . . . Mr. Finkel has done it for me. But skiing is just the thread that weaves this collection of diverse stories together as the book touches on Iranian politics, ski development in China (or lack thereof), the war in Sarajevo, pre-Salt Lake City Olympic bribery, and countless others. Having said that, there's also enough enjoyable virgin pistes and well-carved turns (on skis, telemarks, and snowboards) to satisfy the most selfish powder pig.

        5 out of 5 stars A wonderful surprise of a book.......1999-12-29

If you ski or snowboard, you must buy this book! If you don't ski, but enjoy great travel stories told with wit and humor, you should still buy this book. Finkel is one of the best and funniest travel writers around.

Though a good knowledge of SS Uniforms would be heplfull, this is certianly the best book you can get to start with if you're interested in learning more about SS Cammo uniforms. The pictures are very good (about the best I've seen in a book about this subject), and the less informed won't get bogged down with too many details. If you're looking for a comprehensive work about the specific paterns and evolution there of, you might want something else. The best book for this type of research is expensive, but well worth the money.

First published in 1930, this was the first translation of the Commentarios since original publication in 1647. The work covers an historically significant period, describing the operations leading up to the capture from the Portuguese of Ormuz, in the Persian Gulf, by an Anglo-Persian force. Of importance in the history of the rise of the Indian Empire, this is the first printed account of the Portuguese version of the affair.

The appendices include many previously unpublished Portuguese documents, the most important of which is the full Journal of Edward Monnox, who was present throughout the operations.

                      Book Description

Many books discuss Agile from a theoretical or academic perspective. Becoming Agile takes a different approach and focuses on explaining Agile from a case-study perspective. Agile principles are discussed, explained, and then demonstrated in the context of a case study that flows throughout the book. The case study is based on a mixture of the author's real-world experiences.

Becoming Agile also focuses on the importance of adapting Agile principles to the realities of your environment. In the early days of Agile, there was a general belief that Agile had to be used in all phases of a project, and that it had to be used in its purest form. Over the last few years, reputable Agile authorities have begun questioning this belief: We're finding that the best deployments of Agile are customized to the realities of a given company.

Becoming Agile discusses the cultural realities of deploying Agile and how to deal with the needs of executives, managers, and the development team during migration. The author discusses employee motivation and establishing incentives that reward support of Agile techniques.

                        Book Description

Computer vision falls short of human vision in two respects: execution time and intelligent interpretation. This book addresses the question of execution time. It is based on a workshop on specialized processors for real-time image analysis, held as part of the activities of an ESPRIT Basic Research Action, the Working Group on Vision. The aim of the book is to examine the state of the art in vision-oriented computers. Two approaches are distinguished: multiprocessor systems and fine-grain massively parallel computers. The development of fine-grain machines has become more important over the last decade, but one of the main conclusions of the workshop is that this does not imply the replacement of multiprocessor machines. The book is divided into four parts. Part 1 introduces different architectures for vision: associative and pyramid processors as examples of fine-grain machines and a workstation with bus-oriented network topology as an example of a multiprocessor system. Parts 2 and 3 deal with the design and development of dedicated and specialized architectures. Part 4 is mainly devoted to applications, including road segmentation, mobile robot guidance and navigation, reconstruction and identification of 3D objects, and motion estimation.

                              Book Description

The need for natural and effective Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is increasingly important due to the prevalence of computers in human activities. Computer vision and pattern recognition continue to play a dominant role in the HCI realm. However, computer vision methods often fail to become pervasive in the field due to the lack of real-time, robust algorithms, and novel and convincing applications.

This state-of-the-art contributed volume is comprised of articles by prominent experts in computer vision, pattern recognition and HCI. It is the first published text to capture the latest research in this rapidly advancing field with exclusive focus on real-time algorithms and practical applications in diverse and numerous industries, and it outlines further challenges in these areas.

Real-Time Vision for Human-Computer Interaction is an invaluable reference for HCI researchers in both academia and industry, and a useful supplement for advanced-level courses in HCI and Computer Vision.

2 out of 5 stars Yet another core dump.......2005-12-03

There are thousands of core dumped edited books - no flow nor continuity, fragmented thinking. This is one of them. There a few parts worth reading but certainly not worth the cost of this tome of academic wheel spinning.

One of the editors is very well known but I suspect he did not participate in the editing or quality control.
