Not all books are relevant forever!!.......2007-04-17
I returned this very outdated and sincerely, not up to calling it self "Updated and Expanded Edition" of a book. If you are looking for a HOW TO book for back when your parents where still young and the microwave oven was a fantasy to many, then this might be the history lesson you are looking for. But for anyone who is interested in learning how to shoot buildings with today's (2007) equipment, well you may want to look elsewhere.
A great Inrtoduction to interior and exterior photography.......2006-10-04
I bought this book about 2 years ago and it still is one of the best written books on architectural photography. The book is written with film in mind, but IT DOES go into some detail about digital photography.
To me, it disn't matter if it was film or digital because I shoot digital and was much more interested in the techniques and principles of architectural photography.
This book is a complete course. Just about every topic is covered to some extent. It does cover equipment used by the author and other professional arcitectural photographers and why. This topic is covered in good detail.
Other topics also incluse things like best persepectives for interior or exterior shots, architeural details (interesting), what publications look for, what potential clients really want and need (enginneers, architects, magazines, etc).
The techniques showed and discussed in this book are very useful, even in the digital age. As I write this (Oct. 2006)don't let the fact that this book was written with film mostly in mind deter you. It's about the techniques used that are more important. Transpareny film is still much perferred by all the major architectural magazines and large format cameras are discussed because that is what is being used in Professional Architectural photography. Having said that, I don't use large format cameras (don't know how). My clients are not as particular about correcting distortions as a magaine editor might be. But the proper lighting techniques, camera positions, equipment, etc. do matter. And this book just about covers it all.
This book is an easy read and well illustrated with plenty of photographs and diagrams.
It would be at an advanced level.
If you are looking for a book that tells you how to mimic shots, rather than to explain the key concepts behind shots in order to let you apply this knowledge in a way you prefer, then this book may not be for you. It's not really about "cookie-cutter photography".
I'm an experienced semi-professional photographer, with a combination of formal education and several years experience in film and digital photography. I've read many books on photography and this one is very good.
I also understand that the author is shooting more digital now and is a Canon Explorer of Light.
I hope this helps someone.
A day in the life.......2006-04-29
This is a fabulous book. It's not an intro to photography, and it won't tell you how to, say, light interiors. Instead, it's strength is in the wealth of detail about the author's daily practices and how individual photos were made, his well-reasoned opinions about equipment, his advice for dealing with editors and architects, and his enthusiasm for the digital future. You'll need to know how a view camera works to get the most from the book.
photographing interiors.......2005-09-28
This book is written when film was used as medium but now we are turning towards digital imaging so i found that most information was not applicable for my particular need. I was looking for more of interiors photography techniques after remodeling a house or redoing the interiors. Focus of this book was different than my interest. But lots of good info there.
Not what it says it is.......2005-03-01
This book would be more aptly titled, "Equiptment you could and should buy for photographing interiors". It's designed for amateurs who don't know anything about photography and want to be walked through the process of buying the right equiptment and then left in the dark as to how to properly use it. I know something about photography, and was looking for a book that would talk about photographing interiors and some exteriors. I was interested in uses of perspective, lighting to add drama, that sort of thing. The writer, once explaining the theory behind photographic principles, talks, not about how he was able to take successful pictures, but just that he did. He mentions the equipment he used and tells where he set it up, but for all his superflous text, leaves the reader with only the knowledge of how to re-create his shot in the same location under the same conditions.
It began as an interesting read, as he explained about what the pros use. Then he explained what the beginner could buy, but why it's not really as good. He showed a few examples of how lighting effects a scene and alters color, but in general, his "shooting by beginners on a tight budget" should be "shooting in these locations by beginners with several grand to spend on equiptment".
I was hoping for a book that talked about the uses of lighting, the uses of color, actually shooting something besides huge, open, commercial structures. This is my first return to Amazon.

"Hands and feet are not difficult," counsels Robert E. Fairley, author of Drawing and Painting Hands and Feet, "but they do require acute observation and thinking. If you follow the exercises in this book your skills will improve, and you will start to think about your work in a fresh way." Fairley begins by exploring the structure and anatomy of hands and feet, and offers several exercises for understanding muscles in movement. The next section is composed entirely of exercises in drawing hands and feet. The author employs a refreshingly wide array of media, including charcoal and graphite, ink, silverpoint, and pastels. Several of the exercises are composed using one's own hands and feet as models. Fairley's passion for his subject comes alive in these simple exercises as he stresses and masterfully illustrates the inherent energy and expressiveness of hands and feet in movement and repose. He ends the book by exploring how to incorporate hands and feet in a natural way into one's painting, and shows his works in acrylic, watercolor, and oil by way of illustration. --Mary Ribesky

Na!.......2003-12-16
Why not just take pictures of hands and feet to study from yourself. How about trying some anatomy books. I didn't find this book offered anything of real value in assisting with the ability to draw hands and feet at all. If you want to better understand how to draw hands get the book Drawing Dynamic Hands by Hogarth. His books actually assist one in gaining a better understanding of how to draw the human figure even if you don't want to draw in his style.

Ego trips, bad food, rich brats, sex objects, abusive lovers.......2000-11-07
Geez, I hate to say this, folks...but I kinda get the notion that almost all of our most favorite manga artists think rather alike regardless of their gender and great talents at art and storytelling. Either that, or they all rely on the same old formula: a pubescent young boy winds up into a very bizarre fantasy, becomes hero, gets pelted against a whole line of colorful opponents, chases a pretty girl, and being chased by a saucy young slut who insists on moving right into with him, sharing his bed, and cooking up horrid dinners for him. At least, that's what the whole plot is like for this one particular sequence from the whole series about a kid who's into boxing and his wistful infatuation for a dewy-eyed young nun in her flowing white robes and high-heeled laced boots. As usual, Kosaku is being forced to starve himself (oh, good grief...he isn't EVEN allowed a single drop of water!) and going through a very rigorous training program where he is being whipped half to death by a ruthless coach so he would become a victorious boxer someday. (What a great example to teach the innocent young Japanese children!) This time, Kosaku has to face about three very scary villains in the ring: a spoiled young boxer-wannabe who tries to thrawt Kosaku's self-discpline by tempting him with all sorts of rich food his money could buy, a gutsy Mexican choir-boy who uses a secret weapon to put a very tricky handicap on Kosaku, and a dangerous-looking truck driver whose busty girlfriend (moll?) had ran away from his very dominating behavior (he wanted the girl to retain her perfect figure) to coyly drape her manipulative little self upon the poor boy's anoxeric shoulders. Caught up in all those very baffling conflicts, innocent young Sister Angela watches and worries and frets and prays and nevertheless cheers Kosaku on. While keeping her real feelings at bay, of course.
I loved this very charming story!.......1999-01-31
Rumiko Takahashi writes the sweetest stories, I swear. The main character, Kosaku continues his battles with weight training and the battles going on in his heart about Sister Angela (The nun in training who he loves). In part one of the story, Kosaku gets a new challenger, a high schooler who wants to knock him out. Nothing much really happens in the first part, but keep reading, Takahashi's wit and flair will win you over in no time.
In part two of this story, Kosaku fights a new opponent from Mexico who is undefeated where he comes from. And what's with his strage tattoo that seems to prevent Kosaku from winning? This is the chapter where you can look for the most humour.
In part three, a vivacious new woman appears. Kosaku sees her as a friend, but she wants more with him to get back at her boyfriend! Sister Angela shouldn't mind, since she's given herself to god, but is it that she's . . . jealous? Part three was my favorite part of the book, because of its underlying romantic themes.
This book was much better than those before it, in my opinion, and it really gets you right in the heart. Myself, being an emotional person, almost cried. Don't worry, there's nothing sad, it's just so sweet. I recommend this book to all anime fans, especially fans of Sailor Moon or Ranma. Completley a worth-while read.

More about Woodward & Bernstein and "Deep Throat"........2003-10-05
A very personal book on the lives of the Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein who broke the story of the slush fund and the ultimate resignation of President Richard Nixon. This book contains much more information about Bob Woodward's "secret informer" also known as "Deep Throat" (This has nothing to do with that "adult" film of the same name. They just borrowed the name). Many things were not filmed for All The President's Men (1976). This book discusses the accuracy of the film, and the follow-up book "The Final Days". Patricia Nixon had a stroke two months after the release of "The Final Days" book and Richard Nixon wanted to sue. Woodward and Bernstein would not reveal their sources for the book, just like they will not reveal who "the secret informer, "Deep Throat" is until after the secret informer dies. The author believes he knows who or what people were "the secret informer" was. If you enjoyed the film "All The President's Men" (1976) and the tv-movie "The Final Days" (1989-TV), you will like the juicy information in this book.
They can not really reveal who the "secret informer" is until that person has died. With respect, they must protect their source. Some time after the interment, perhaps, Woodward will announce who the "informer" was.
We don't know how this will be announced, no doubt with high security for Woodward and Bernstein and concern for family survivors. Surely, The Washington Post Newspaper and all news channels will break the announcement.
Bob Woodward is an occasional guest on Larry King Live (CNN) and in 2004, Bob Woodward and carl bernstein appeared on Larry King Live (CNN) and in part discussed that time in 1974. Bernstein even made a joke about putting the flower pot outside again. Carl Bernstein has recently been a frequent guest on MSNBC with his insight about "His Holiness" ( also the name of Carl Bernstein's book).
Is the "secret informer someone who is high-profile: John Dean, Alexander Haig, Henry Kissinger, George McGovern, Gerald Ford, Patrick Buchanan, Robert Dole? Or is it someone who is lesser known or forgotten?
Could it be a woman, perhaps, Presidential Journalist Helen Thomas (Well, now I am being silly guessing)?
What is certain, this important secret is the best kept secret in over 30 years. The wonder will finally be revealed.
Please see the film, ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN (1976) and keep your eyes on The Washington Post and CNN-Cable News Network and the NBC Networks.
Update: February 8, 2005--Donald Segrette reportedly said, it is not a former President and the person is not currently sick.
Update: W. Mark Felt, now the age of 91 and in declining health, is claiming in an article in Vanity Fair Magazine on this day that he was the secret informer, "Deep Throat". He was second-in-command at the FBI in the 1970's.
Later that night after W. Mark Felt appeared before the cameras, Bob Woodward did confirm that W. Mark Felt was the secret informer (the source) that he had secretly met with in the parking garage (played by Hal Halbrook in the film, All The President's Men [1976]).
The Washington Post also confirmed.
The 33-year secret has finally been revealed.
Tom Brokaw shared on NBC's The Today Show, June 1, 2005 that the "first clue" was Bob Woodward mentioned the secret informer as "My Friend" (attention to the initials: M.F.). The Washington Post Managing Editor thought it best to change that to another name "Deep Throat". However, nobody thought of Mark Felt being possibly the "secret informer" until just six years ago in 1999.
Another secret revealed was Bob Woodward has been keeping in touch with W. Mark Felt and had lunch with him in 1999.
Bob Woodward is currently writing a new book on his meetings with the "secret informer", W. Mark Felt, "The Secret Man: The Story of Watergate's Deep Throat", will be published July 6, 2005.

Book Description
In this book, Carol Harris shows how NLP can work to improve the way readers feel and behave in their business, social, emotional, physical and spiritual lives.
Customer Reviews:
Not Learning Properly.......2005-12-20
Thanks to Ms. Harris I am unfortunately completely turned off to the whole NLP concept. As the previous reviewer mentioned, this book is poorly written, has very unimaginative examples (when EVEN PRESENTED), some of the most irrelevant information ever, ETC. And yeah, where was the editor? Skip this PLEASE.
Keep Searching.......2005-09-21
Recently I've encountered more and more references to Neuro-Linguistic Programming - probably because I've been on a magick and self-help reading binge, and both of those genres have much in common with NLP. It made sense for me to eventually read an introduction to this influential discipline, and so I purchased Carol Harris's NLP Made Easy.
Unfortunately, Harris has turned "a powerful technique for maximizing your potential" into a jargon-larded snooze-fest. Chapter One, "What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming," introduces a few key concepts and shows some promise. Chapter Two, dealing with the history of NLP, is a mire of names, dates, locations and associations that have no significance to the neophyte and contributes nothing to an understanding of the subject matter. The NLP hagiography could have been shunted into an appendix, and the recitals of who was married to whom and for how long could not possibly interest anyone but an insider. Things brighten up again in the third chapter, where "frameworks," "models" and "techniques" are introduced and distinguished. While merely definitional, this discussion at least hints at something more substantial to come. Alas, the remainder of the text, while purporting to describe applications of NLP in the areas of personal growth, social relationships and business situations, is really a parade of more jargon, excruciatingly banal illustrations, and - I hate to say it - poor writing.
Here are some examples: In the chapter on personal development, we read about Jenny, who "gets out of breath running for a bus, tends to lack energy by early afternoon and thinks her muscle tone is rather soft." We learn that Jenny goes to the gym, but has trouble keeping up her motivation, especially when using monotonous equipment like the treadmill. NLP's solution for Jenny is for her to vividly imagine herself taking a walk in another location, away from the gym, "perhaps even somewhere as simple as the local shops." "In much less time than usual," we are told, "she will have completed her exercise and also had the mental stimulation of the imaginary walk." No kidding. It actually says all that, but not much else, except for the imporant safety caveat that "Jenny still needs to pay conscious attention to her exercise technique" while taking imaginary walks and having imaginary discussions with friends. Examples like this make NLP look ridiculous, and the second half of Harris's book is full of them.
As for jargon, NLP apparently has more than its share. Here are a few of my favorites, culled from the glossary: "Representational systems" are sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell - in other words, the five senses. But I guess "five senses" wasn't available for copyright protection. Oh, and the perfectly useful terms sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell are apparently too ordinary for admission into the NLP lexicon, which instead talks about the visual, auditory, kinaesthetic, gustatory and olfactory senses. Aside from these linguistic excrescences, "analogue marking" is a fancy way of saying "emphasizing," either through gesture or tone, and "perceptual positions" are basically the same things as perspectives. As a lawyer, I hear and use jargon every day. But if I were writing a book for a lay audience, I would avoid jargon like chlamydia. Harris does us the favor of providing a glossary, but she would have done better to purge the main text of any word or phrase, not immediately recognizable to the layperson, for which an acceptable substitute exists.
My next couple of critiques have to do with the style of the writing itself, apart from the uninspired examples and terms of art. A section on planning begins, "All of us need to plan at some time in our lives." The next section, on negotiation, begins, "There are many situations where negotiation is necessary." The chapter on social relationships begins, "There are many occasions when we need to come into contact with other people." I could go on, but the point is that Harris's weary repetition of the obvious is almost farcical.
One of my greatest pet peaves, and one that appears on nearly every other page of this book, is pronoun/antecedent disagreement. Opening the book at random, I find, "Ask a person you know if they will help you with an exercise." "A person" is singular; "they" is plural. Way back a long time ago, before elegance was sacrificed on the altar of political correctness, we would write, "Ask a person you know if he will help you with an exercise." Today, so as not to offend anyone by writing in a manner that fails to take into account the shape of his or her genitals, we may write, "Ask a person you know if she or he will help you with an exercise." This is awkward, but grammatically accurate. As a man, my feelings would not have been hurt had Harris used a hypothetical "she" throughout the text. In my own writing, I pay homage to gender neutrality by alternating hypothetical "he's" with hypothetical "she's." But I digress. WHERE WAS THE EDITOR?
My final critique is on the level of philosophy rather than content or style. On page 17, and again on page 83, Harris warns that certain techniques are too "powerful," are "open to misuse," and should only be used after "sufficient training" or "under supervision" of an advanced practitioner and then she clams up. I believe Harris may be sincere in her concern that certain techniques may be abused, but let's face it - in the age of Google and Amazon, anyone who wants to can find out just about anything. The same sort of coyness shows up all the time in magick, martial arts and, lately, press releases from government funded research facilities. If the author is not being condescending, then she must be incredibly naive, or else she is employing some reverse-psychology marketing technique in order to sell more advanced NLP manuals. At any rate, I've always found this sort of paternalistic self-censorship a little irritating.
I hope this review hasn't been too negative. I really do mean it to be constructive. Regardless of the labels used (magick, cognitive behavioral therapy, NLP or whatever), we all wish we could do a better job winning friends and influencing people, yet we resent it when politicians, media figures, religious leaders and other types of salesmen manipulate us (that is, those of us who've figured out we're being manipulated resent it, and wonder why nobody else seems to notice or care). Aside from that, most of us could use an occasional tune-up of our cognitive, interpersonal and "spiritual" faculties, and if someone out there has developed some useful techniques, let's hear them! For these reasons, an easy-to-follow introduction to NLP is to be desired. To the author and the publisher: please do a better job next time. To the prospective reader: keep browsing titles before purchasing your first book on NLP. There must be a better one out there.
Book Description
In 1271, Kubilai, ruler of the Mongol Empire, proclaimed himself the first Emperor of the Yüan dynasty. Within a few years he was to gain control of the rest of China, in effect giving China unity and independence under an alien dynasty. His reign endured until 1368, when the native Ming dynasty came to power. Focusing on these two regimes, this text explores the history, organization and tactics of the Yüan and Ming armies from 1260-1520. Numerous illustrations and colour plates portray the weapons and uniforms of the Chinese troops in vivid detail.
Customer Reviews:
Weak on some topics.......1999-07-28
The Men-at-arms Series covers ancient and classical China in five books, all by Chris Peers who is very familiar with the subject. This is the fourth book in this series. The chapters: Chronology -- The Yüan Dynasty -- The Yüan Army -- The Civil Wars 1351-1368 -- The Ming Dynasty -- The Ming Army -- Strategy and tactics -- Six significant battles. The text focuses on telling Chinas military history; it is very weak on topics like weapons or battle tactics. The drawings by David Sque are good. The maps are primitive and not very useful. American units of measurement are used throughout the book, which is a nuisance for international readers. This book is the sequel to "Imperial Chinese Armies 590 - 1260" (MAA 295). The next book in the series is "Late Imperial Chinese Armies 1520 - 1840" (MAA 307).

I ADORE THIS BOOK.......2007-06-08
This book is informative of Max Huber, his style, his philosophies and it offers beautiful imagery both color and black/white. We display the series, including OTl Aicher, Josef Muller-Brockmann because they're all the same size and thickness. Phaidon knows what they're doing.

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
An Atlas of the Anatomy of Fear.......2004-10-18
Max Von Moos (1903-1979) was an important representative of modern Swiss painting, in which he cultivated doubt as a creative principle in painting. A picture order built up from fragments corresponded to its conception of truthfulness. He said that he painted beautifully in mourning. These pictures show people surrounded by violence and destruction, oppressed by fear and desperation, marked by pain & decay, in hopeless or comically absurd situations. Its Surrealisms is not the stuff of dreams. In paintings of remarkable technical championship it describes fear of the world and failure of perception. Many full color and black and white photographs.
