Book Description
"Every preconceived notion we hold about the nature of construction is being challenged. Architects have to take advantage of these sea changes to change the building industry."Toshiko Mori
Over the course of history, materials such as concrete and steel revolutionized architecture. Immaterial/Ultramaterial, the second volume in the Millennium Matters series, investigates today's revolutionary new materials and methods of fabrication, and the profound impact they're having on the continuing evolution of architecture. The impact is felt in many areas, including architects' design methods, the conception of form, and modes of production. From the use of immaterial elements such as light, sound, and smell, to the implications of invincible materials ("ultramaterials"), which technological developments may soon place within our reach, this book envisions the future of architecture.
The innovations in materials and fabrication explored in this volume are the result of an independent seminar held at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design that investigated new materials and novel applications of familiar ones. Divided into four groups that focused on "Surface," "Edge," "Phenomena," and "Substance," the members of these research teams rediscovered the relationship between material and design. Not only architects, but anyone interested in the fabrication of materials, in construction, or in design, will want to read about these groundbreaking innovations. 50 illustrations in color, 10 in b/w.
Customer Reviews:
Dry Study.......2004-05-08
Toshiko Mori has sadly fallen into the trap of confusing the practice of architecture with merely writing about it. This once-talented architect has now become a parody of herself, a self-important academic smugly satisfied with the sound of her own rhetoric. As for the book, it documents new materials and systems. But the presentation is dry, more in the form of an industrial catalog, and lacks any substantive commentary on architecture itself. And I can't help wondering how many trees might have been saved if Mori and her clique edited out the repetitive and cliched use of words like "challenging", "distorting", "alienating" etc. Architectura and materials evolve; the first use of them, however experimental, is not always good. Like Mori's work, it is stylish, but not classic. Faddish, but not timeless. Pass this one up before it becomes embarrassing to have it on your bookshelf.

A Wacky R. Crumb Experience.......2003-10-16
This looks like something I remember from my hallucinating days at a Grateful Dead concert. From what I've seen, I love it -- I may even have to buy a copy. Of course, I knew Penny back when she was drawing staid portraits and still-lifes with bananas and cherries, so this is quite a switch. It's like a return to the Zap Comix of my youth.

Book Description
By the middle of 1942, Allied fortunes had reached their lowest ebb. Britains military command was in tatters and the U.S., Britains new ally, had only fledgling, severely under-trained forces. It seemed all might be lost in the Middle East, while collapse seemed inevitable in Russia. Yet at this crucial time, America and Britain began to work together, and it was this alliance of the weary combatant and nave newcomer, fighting shoulder to shoulder under shared command for the first time in North Africa, that would eventually lead to the defeat of the Axis powers in the west. Whilst drawing on a wide range of archival material from around the world and offering new perspectives and analysis to a critical period of World War II, Together We Stand is also about the men and women who found themselves caught up in this struggle, people drawn from all parts of the globe, from all ranks and services, to make up these polyglot Allied forces. From the heat and dust of the Western Desert to the mud and mountains of Northern Tunisia, Holland retells the remarkable stories of these brave soldiers and charts the extraordinary first days of an alliance that has worked together ever since.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Overview.......2006-06-03
James Holland's book, Together We Stand is a very enjoyable read. For those who have read little on the North African front, it is also greatly informative. For those who are more widely read on this topic, it is still very much worth exploring if for nothing else than Holland's writing style which I agree is as absorbing as Ambrose.
In addition Holland does an excellent job synthesizing critical ground, air and naval warfare aspects of the 1942-mid 1943 Mediterranean front in one volume, covering all levels of perspective. For example Holland presents the readers with the personalities, challenges and operational methodologies of such leaders as Churchill, Montgomery and Eisenhower while also describing in detail what fighting the war was like for a typical fighter pilot, tank commander, infantryman and even a submarine officer. He also provides more attention than most other works on the air warfare aspects of the 1942-43 North African/Mediterranean campaign. It is regrettable Holland's books have experienced far less commercial success or publicity, at least in the U.S. compared with similar authors such as Hastings, Ambrose, and Atkinson. His writing abilities are the equal to these gifted historians.
Of course, for some professional historians and certain more highly educated academics, Holland may be considered too much of a "pop historian" with little that is new to offer. But for amateur history enthusiasts such as myself, I highly recommend this book.
Outstanding........2006-02-19
James Holland has come from nowhere to produce the best military history book for many years, maybe the best in the last decade. If you enjoy what I call "narrative" military history in the tradition of Cornelius Ryan, Max Hasting and the Rick Atkinson then Together We Stand is a must have book. It is better than the books by any of the three mentioned above and they set very high standards.
Together We Stand covers much of the same ground as the excellent An Army At Dawn by Rick Atkinson but starts far earlier in '42. Sixty percent of the book deals with the fighting in the summer and autumn of '42 before Torch and the North African landings.
The style is the traditional one of mixing high quality research, operational analysis and person accounts. Only James Holland does this better than even Rick Atkinson, and I am one of those who though the hype surrounding Rick Atkinson's An Army At Dawn was fully justified.
James Holland gives greater prominence to the air war than most books and describes that warfare more eloquently than others. But for those more interested in ground warfare, as I am, do not be alarmed as the ground war still gets the majority of the coverage and is covered in great detail.
It is a big book at over 700 pages of main text but never falters. An outstanding mixture of analysis, story telling and page turning thriller all in one. I hope there will be a long line of military histories to come from James Holland. In James Holland military history has a new star.

Book Description
It is the neon sign that blinks on the edge of our consciousness; the wavy, delicate windowpanes in a centuries-old farmhouse; the airy adornment of high-rise architects and playful distraction of daydreaming schoolchildren. Heat resistant or shatterproof, tempered or stained, this magical substance formed of sand and fire has done much more than brighten and beautify: it has changed the very way we live.William S. Ellis brilliantly whisks readers on a marvelously entertaining journey of ingenuity and discovery, from the birthplace of glass on the ancient shores of Phoenicia to the crystal factories of Waterford, which only recently has leapt into the computer age. In prose as crystalline as his subject, the author celebrates the versatility and functionality of glass, and explains how a substance known to all but understood by few has been shaped and molded to serve mankind in innumerable ways. In these pages, readers will learn how glass has both shaped and been shaped by man's changing relationship to the environment; how it has brought vision to the sight-deprived and to human beings huddling in the dark; and how glass enters the twenty-first century yielding an almost unlimited horizon of possibilities. With grace, charm and authority, Glass delves into history, invention, manufacturing, fine art, and the myriad faces and forms of this protean substance. Whether visiting the flamboyant glass artist Dale Chihuly, dissecting the creation of a twenty-ton telescopic mirror, sampling the history of Tiffany's magnificent lamps, or watching the design and construction of the greenhouses of Kew Gardens, this book treats readers to a multifaceted vision of a material eternally destined to die a violent death, and to be constantly reborn in a relentlessly changing world.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Tidbits Lost in Annoying Metaphors and Jokes.......2004-01-05
There are many interesting tidbits in this undisciplined effort at science writing, but excessive use (of often confusing) metaphors and jokes make this annoying to the point of frustration. The topic is fascinating but the writer seems to think his flowery poetry and fine wit contributes to the readability of the book. It does not!
In addition, he has the annoying habit of presenting an interesting concept but in no way explaining the science behind it.
Science writing has, at times, lapsed into sloppy writing laced with excessive poetics and personal observations of no interest to others. On the other hand, David Quammen (as in The Song of the Dodo) has shown us that we should expect and demand tightly written and reasoned science writing.
A Fun Read If You Don't Mind Lots of Misinformation.......2001-08-14
The original article by Ellis in the National Geographic was excellent and accurate as well. It seems most unfortunate that the detailed checking of facts that was used there was not applied to this book. Just two examples of many that could have been chosen: Ellis has Nefertiti looking into a glass mirror more than 2000 years before glass mirrors began to replace mirrors made of polished metal (page 9); in discussing fiber optical communication (page 96), he states that amplifiers are needed "to give lift to the light and prevent it from reverting back to electricity..." - of course the light merely weakens from absorption, leakage, and scattering, but always remains light. The color picture of the hanging Cage Cup is printed upside-down. And there are several places where he discusses so-called important break-throughs in fields where the discoverers have then gone on to do other things for various stated reasons. The real reasons were, of course, that these were not break-throughs but either dead ends or only self-advertised claims that did not really work. It is most unfortunate that experts in the field of each of the many and important topics covered were not asked to proof-read it, for then it would have been an excellent and accurate account.
The Tektite Glass Menagerie.......1999-02-12
An excellent book about glass and glass making. The reference to tektites--natural, extraterrestrial glass stones--is all too brief however (and inaccurate in scope). Author William S. Ellis fails to tell the whole story of the on-going--and most certainly unresolved--mystery of tektite origin! Oddly, both sides of the constroversy consider the problem solved. Reading "Glass," one would assume the "impact" side has won the debate. Not true at all! Ellis fails to mention one of the most credible theories of tektite origin: That is, that tektites appear to some geologists and astronomers (and some ceramic scientists)to be extraterrestrial volcanic glass, probably ejected during ancient silicic eruptions on the Moon. Also, the author fails to mention that tektite glass is far too "fined" to have been made in the near-instantaneous force of terrestrial meteorite impacts, as the mainstream "impact" scientists contend. The chemical trends in tektites are clearly igneous, not sedimentary as noted here and stated by the impact people.
