Book Description
In a time of loud gestures and ostentation unpretentious buildings, which have been reduced to the essentials with no superfluous decoration, are soothing in their purity.
This new volume in the series In Detail demonstrates the breadth and complexity of the issues involved in building simply, from functional and economic demands, through ecological and energy-related aspects, to design and construction requirements.
“Building Simply” can be read and applied in many ways. In the face of the sheer wealth of possibilities available today and the ever quicker changes in design and style, it is a creative process which does justice to the nature and quality of the materials used and gives rise to unique projects through an economy of means and resources.
The project section documents a comprehensive range of international examples, from simple wooden bridges, to pavilions, residential buildings, workshops, and warehouses.
Customer Reviews:
best volume in the best detail architecture books available.......2007-08-25
This book is part of a deliriously excellent series of Birkhauser's In
Detail collection, a series of books emphasizing and celebrating the importance of architectural details and the susbsequent spatial magic that emerges from the vigilant attention to design craft. I must say its excellence SHAMES the building culture of The united States of Kitsch. The level of American work in the field of architecture, by comparison, is stunted, nostalgic to the point of senility, and plastic garbage overseen by power broker idiot clients. Sadly, it's painfully, pathetically true, and these books prove it as a matter of course. Why are we (American) practitioners, builders, teachers, students, clients, laypeople, basically everyone really SO ill informed about design????
Don't we care?? Is there so much discord and disagreement?? It's puzzling.
Get these books and feast on the International wisdom; let's get half a clue.
great source.......2007-08-21
The book was exactly as I expected, high quality, detailed explanations in the Caliber of detail magazine. I will defiantly be purchasing the other books in this series.
Sometimes opaque, but great projects.......2007-01-05
I found the essays on simple construction to be variable in quality...The chapters on wood and steel either suffered in translation or were student composition exercises to begin with. The projects illustrated, however, are of uniformly high quality, and are documented with Detail's typical precision. For an American architect, many of the projects using wood construction will be eye openers. The stone and clay construction projects are wonderful for daydreaming about a different building culture in this country. Well worth it for the photos and drawings.
a very informative architectural detail review on residential.......2006-07-10
The book describes simple and neat residential building design in detail , shape, and material. The book should be applicable to architects or designers who aspire to work in modernism or minimalism on housing and who desire to improve the residential detil design to be more insighfully clean and blight. As well, the analysis from the publication could be developed to function in other architecture types.
Excelent..........2006-03-08
Meets my expectations...
interesting book, nice pictures, good information, good examples, some detailed drawings, hard cover quality.

A pleasure.......2007-09-02
I love Pauline Cherrett's books. This one is a joy to look at and a delight to paint from. The projects are easy to follow and I like the sense of humour in the subjects. My painting skills have improved following her directions. This book has given me a lot of painting pleasure and satisfaction.Thank you.
Novice Beware.......2004-01-30
From the description and reviews, I thought that this would be quite the helpful instructional book, but I was wrong. I've never picked up ANY sort of paintbrush before, so I'm starting below ground zero. The entire section on mixing the seven different 'colors' of black in with the five different wetnesses consists of a total of two paragraphs. There is no instruction on how to control how much ink gets on your brush, or how to dilute the ink down to one of the lighter shades without turning the brush into a wet dog on the end of a stick. There are exactly nine paragraphs on working with the black ink (which is the basis for most of paintings I've seen) before the book dives into color. ONE of those paragraphs is on how to hold the brush, and ONE paragraph is on different strokes to use. I'm really disappointed in the lack of explanation. How do you do a stroke with the side of the brush and keep the bristles from spreading all over the page? How, exactly, do you adjust the amount of water on the brush. The book says to dab the heel of the brush with a paper towel, but the heel of the brush that came with the kit is sealed, so THAT won't work... When your holding the brush with the tip towards you, should your hand be palm up or palm down? It's the questions like these that aren't even addressed, which is sad. If you're just starting out, try a different book. Trust me.
great introduction to chinese watercolor.......2001-06-08
I recieved this kit as a gift, and read through the book and I think it is a great introduction to Chinese brush painting.
The kit includes: two black ink sticks, an ink stone; white, yellow orange, and blue paint blocks, a tube of vermillion (red) watercolor paint, a small porcelein bowl, a brass spoon, your very own chinese painting brush and ten sheets of paper(5 grass, 5 Xuan) in the back on which to practice. Granted, there are more brushes and colors and types of paint and paper you could buy, but this kit helps you get started and has everything you need to paint the 14 projects in the book (you will probably need more paper though). You will learn to paint flowers, animals, fish, landscapes and more if you follow the instructions. I think if you master the techniques taught in this book you will have at the least the skill to paint in a beautiful way, and at the most an inspiration to continue to explore chinese brush painting.
The book gives step by step instructions, including: how to grind your ink using the ink stick and stone, how to use the brush to achieve a desired effect, including directional arrows and the position of the brush. I think the instruction is clear and the artworks are inspirational enough to get you started and give you practice with different techniques.
The only minor problem I had was that the little bowl and spoon had been explained. I am guessing that the little bowl holds the water with which you use the little brass spoon to dip and add drops of water onto the ink stone before you grind your ink. I am also guessing that the blocks of paint should be chipped off as needed to preserve their purity rather than using them like the pan watercolors we had as children.
Overall I still give this book a rating of five stars.
Stunning Projects?.......2000-05-08
I was a bit stunned when I received this book. It comes with the minimum materials necessary to make your first strokes of Chinese painting, but the "stunning" projects appear to be at the 6th grade level. The brush, ink stick, and ink stone are the primary expenses here, so there isn't much in the way of instruction. The best thing I can say is that the book and supplies will probably allow you to decide if you like Chinese brush painting or not. As such, it is probably a good "first" book for most novices.

The essence and power of Molokai in pictures and words..........2000-04-11
Having had the opportunity to live on Molokai and experience its beauty and power first hand, this book is the only work that I've seen that captures so much of Molokai's essence. Rik's aloha and connectedness to this land and her people shines through each and every picture. And the words accompanying the pictures are genuine and heartfelt.
So many Molokai people and special places are immortalized in his pictures including slack key guitarist Kelii Mawae, fisherman extraordinaire and noni farmer. I read and gaze at this book over and over and never tire of it. It reconnects me with Molokai.
Enjoy! And if you are interested in ancient history of this powerful place, I suggest 'Tales from the Night Rainbow' by Pali Jae Lee and Koko Willis.
Astonishingly beautiful and inspirational Hawaii artbook.......1999-10-15
Moloka`i, An Island In Time is a gorgeously photographed and beautifully designed art book depicting the Hawaiian island of Molokai in a way that nothing before this ever has. The design is by Robin Rickabaugh, who some might remember as the guiding force behind the stunning "Oregon Rainbow" magazine of the 1970s.Photos from this book were excerpted by National Geographic Magazine for an article on Molokai in the 1980s.Precious little has been published about this amazing island, and travel magazine articles to this day do not even give readers a glimpse of what Richard Cooke reveals in this wonderful book.Indeed, Molokai, An Island In Time was the inspiration behind my own book, Driving & Discovering Maui and Molokai. Up until I found Richard's book, I had no idea that Molokai was such a beautiful destination.

Book Description
Introducing the delightfully precise and beautifully designed art of Patrick Atangan in a new series of adaptations of traditional Asian tales. This book, drawn in the ukiyo-e style (world of floating pictures), presents "The Yellow Jar" which centers around a simple fisherman and a beautiful maiden he takes as wife, after finding her in a magic jar. However, she is abducted by a demon warrior considerably more powerful than the simple fisherman. But the fisherman¹s resolve, even after many unsuccessful attempts to rescue her, does not flinch... In "Two Chrysanthemum Maidens", a monk is faced with two rather strange wild flowers in his carefully tended garden. They are wild and have planted themselves there at will. They are weeds but they are lovely like women.

Book Description
Offering an intimate look at the people and places of Afghanistan, India, and Pakistan, this memoir by adventurer and historian Mathew Wilson recounts journeys into remote areas as a member of the British army and with his family in the late 1960s. Wilson relates stories of crossing the Hindu Kush with his pregnant wife and two-year-old son and running a gauntlet of armed border guards to get his injured son to a hospital. Twenty-one years later, Wilson returned to honor a promise made to a Hindu priest in Central India-to seek, find, and follow the fleeting shadow of the Rani of Jhansi, one of the heroines of India's 1957 revolt against British rule.

Thorough, well-researched, and objective examination of Confederate blockade running........2005-10-05
Stephen Wise, the author of Gate of Hell: Campaign for Charleston Harbor, 1863, has written another excellent book. This objective treatise about Confederate steam powered blockade running is thorough, without being exhausting to the reader. It covers the subject with ample maps, sketches/photos, tables and text. Summarizing from the book: nearly 300 steamers made 1300 attempts, of which 1,000 were successful. 221 vessels were captured or destroyed. The South imported 400,000 rifles (60%), 1/3rd of its lead, 2/3rd of its salt peter for gunpowder, as well as a great number of blankets, clothing, shoes, and leather goods.
This is not a romanticized, detailed retelling of many blockade running stories. A reader in search of such a tactically oriented story telling work would likely be disappointed. However, neither is the book simply a dry collection of statistics and organizational descriptions, for it also has concise retellings of many pertinent blockade running attempts. These accounts provide the reader with a feel for the trade, the skill and resourcefulness of the captains, and how methods evolved over time as both the blockade runners, and the blockaders improved in quality and numbers.
The book focuses almost exclusively on steam powered blockade runners, dismissing the numerous sailing ship attempts as having a negligible impact on the war effort. One of the few omissions from the book is adequate statistics and detailed explanation of why this was so (size, vulnerability, etc.)
There is a treasure trove of information in this work for anyone seeking a better understanding of the strategic aspect of arming and supplying the South. The strengths and weaknesses of the Union blockade are exposed from the vantage point of the blockade runners. Wise illustrates the failings of "King Cotton" diplomacy early in the war. He demonstrates how Southern blockade running was hampered by a lack of central control, multiple competing efforts, and over reliance on private enterprise. The South had ample opportunity early to ship cotton and bring in war materiel while the Federal blockade was a token force. Unfortunately, the Confederacy's policy of cutting off the cotton supply prevented it from effectively using its only valuable financial asset, and arms flowed in much more slowly than they should have early in the war. As a result, the rights to cotton were sold at ¼ market value rather than obtaining better compensation, and cotton bonds were discounted even more as Southern military reverses occurred.
What stands out is the transformation of Wilmington, NC from a minor developing port into the premiere deepwater port for the South, and the final lifeline for Lee's army in Virginia.
226 pages of the primary text includes 25 maps. Following that are 101 pages of detailed appendices about attempts at each port, those captured/destroyed/lost, and a summary of the known specifications for each steam blockade runner. Notes and bibliography occupy a further 50 pages. Additionally, there are 36 drawings, photos, and sketches of steamers, and prominent figures.
Note: My softcover copy does not seem to have the binding problem mentioned by another reviewer--at least not so far. I've seen that sort of problem in books before, but not in this one, so perhaps I have a different printing.
Excellent account.......2005-03-27
This is an excellent account of a facinating subject. However a word of WARNING. Buy a hardcover copy as the binding on the paperback edition is the worst I have ever seen. It broke immediately. But I now have a HB copy for my library.
Comprehensive History of Civil War Blockade Running.......2000-02-15
Stephen Wise has managed to both write a comprehensive history packed with information which is also very readable. Truly a remarkable feat. The book succeeds at both imparting the general course of the blockade running and the many fascinating incidents which make up the history of blockade running.
THE Book to have about blockade running!.......1999-03-16
Stephen R. Wise's opus on the blockade runners is not to be missed! He ably describes the blockade itself, the ships and men that challenged it, and backs it all up with valuable charts and tables. Truly definitive.

Western Society and the Church in the Middle Ages (Hist of the Church)
ASIN: 0231096348 |
Book Description
Guillaume d'Orange is the most extensive epic cycle of the Middle Ages. Set in the ninth century, the poems on the life of William of Orange grew out of several centuries of oral composition and were written down for the first time in the twelfth century. Changing and growing through the years, the poems reflect historical events from the ninth to the twelfth century.
Joan M. Ferrante writes in the Introduction, "History tells us little of the medieval William of Orange, but legend tells us a great deal. From the legends grew the most extensive epic cycle of the Middle Ages."
