This book has some good design/engineering information but is both over priced and out of date. I recommend you check it out of your public library to look at it before buying it.

Save Your Money.......2001-01-08

If you would like to take a serious look at this building technique, this book is not going to help you. There is not a single wall section drawn and at one point the authors feel it necessary to tell you that a 2x4 is actually only 3 1/2" wide.

I had assumed that the authors were builders who had experimented with the systems and put together this "construction manual" with their recommendations. Not so. It is produced by the Portland Cement Association and appears to simply reprint trade show literature from various manufacturers.

Seriously Not enough seriousness for the seriously artistic.......2006-07-06

Just a fun way to get used to using melted pigment with an iron. Obviously not the ONLY way one can use Encaustics, and perhaps not for everyone. (Especially not for those who don't believe fun and art should be used in the same sentence.) Well, Jasper Johns numbers didn't look like serious Art to me. In fact, I dare to say that anyone looking at them back when he melted them onto those canvases (maybe used an iron??)....wouldn't have known if he made those for an Altered book cover (Craft?) or if their teenager did them one rainy Saturday for their school fair. But then again, art is and has been hype for decades in this part of the world, and I just have a problem with these self appointed critics who like to think they can judge whatever they don't consider to be "art" to be "craft." Gee, I wonder why the chinese don't separate their Art into "Fine Art" and "Decorative Art." Obviously there is something in their culture which doesn't require them to be separatists or snobs, Art is just the whole process.

If you want to learn a CRAFT to wow your friends, neighbors and the folks at the local crafts fair, this is the book for you. If, however, you're looking to create fine art through encaustic painting, save your money.

a good start for novice encaustic painters.......2002-01-11

If you are looking for ancient encaustic techniques or instruction on becoming a Museum caliber encaustic artist, this is not your book. But, if you want to learn wax painting for pure fun and enjoyment, you are Michael Bossom's target. The instructions will get you started, and from there it's up to your imagination. I have no artistic background, had never heard the word "encaustic", and have never had a lesson in my 65 years. But following the book and video got me on my way to recently receiving a Fine Art Show First Place. Use the book as it's written, have fun, and good luck.

How to Paint with Wax? Hardly........2000-03-23

Well, it's my own fault. I read the other reviews here and still bought the book. I was disappointed with the content (which wasn't very helpful for a novice) the artwork in the book, as well as the SIZE of the book. If you want to learn how to do Encaustic painting - you won't learn it here. All the author tells you is that you melt some wax on an iron and spread it around. He doesn't even touch on the other forms of Encaustic painting, such as using a "crock pot" and a brush - just as one example.

A Great Book!.......2000-02-21

I am a beginner to encaustic art and found this book both very informative and inspiring. The landscapes and the fantasy scenes are also gorgeous to look at.

There are instructions for how to do this art with lots of helpful pictures and captions. This book was easy to follow and helpful to learn basic skills. I would recommend this book to anyone who is new to this medium

A travel book without direction .......2006-01-19

Twigger is a great writer at publishing adventure novels in which he starts the quest but never seems to complete it. His books are about growing up and finding himself, but he rarely finds his subject (BIG SNAKE). A self-help book for the over educated who are looking at making their mark by desperately trying to find their niche in life ie: being a writer.

Snakes and more snakes.......2001-08-23

I liked this book - more of a travelogue than a snake book, but entertaining and inspiring. Went and saw some reticulated pythons afterwards, and thought about the world's longest snake... If you liked this book, try the Snakebite Survivor's Club also - hilarious and scary.

Big Ego: The Hunt for the World's Longest Whine.......2001-03-17

Well, as treatises on growing into manhood go, it's about average. What gets me is the title: why call it a hunt for a python? All the author hunted was other people to find a snake, and his own elusive maturity. I also cannot imagine going into such an endeavour so unprepared. It would have been more interesting, at least from a herp point of view, if a reticulated python hunted Twigger.

Buy this book only if you have a man in your family that refuses to grow up, and you want to show him into what he could deteriorate.

Big snake? NOT !!!! Try Big Bogus Bomb........2000-10-06

This Is not a story about the hunt for the longest python but the hunt for someone else to find the longest python. The Author spends very little time looking for the snake . When one is found at the end of the book he is off getting married. It never even tells us if some zoo bought the big snake the other guys found. I wanted to hear about catching the snake NOT about a rave on the roof of a bank. if you want to read it wait for the paperback or for the library copy. Vivat The Commonwealth!.......2006-06-11

Polish Hussars, Crafty Lithuanian Dukes, Mad Danish Kings, Gay Swedish Boy Kings, Patient and Lethal Muscovites, Prussian Electors and Lettish and Estonian Barons fill the pages of this seminal and erudite work of history. I can only echo the other reviews of this fine work of well researched, and enjoyably written history. For any and all interested in the histories of any of the nations taking part in the "Struggle for the North" you simply can't do better than this excellent study. Despite its hefty price tag (I got it for less some years ago) it IS worth it. Long Live the Commonwealth!

An erudite collection of essays........2003-05-12

This book is a collection of discrete essays on the theme of the Baltic or Northern wars. In the period following the end of the crusading in the Baltic region four key players emerged to contend for control of the crusader states. These were Sweden, Denmark, Russia and Poland/Lithuania.

Frost analyses the rises and falls of the influence of each of the states over time with regard to a number of factors.
1. He looks at the makeup of the military machines in each state. The ratio of professional and conscript soldiers. The makeup of the officer corps. The percentage of cavalry to infantry. The adoption of firearms, the development of the Huzzar to replace heavy cavalry, the failure of early mounted musketeers against Polish cavalry shock tactics and the ability of well drilled infantry to frustrate cavalry ambitions as practiced by the Swedes.
2. He looks at the relationship between ruler and state, from the wholly autocratic Russian system to the almost democratic Polish and Lithuanian system. The income of ruler and state such as the ability of Danish kings to act autonomously of their parliament due to the money from sound dues etc.
3. He looks (most interesting to me) at the ability of nations to fund war. The cost of standing armies and mercenaries. The need to vote extraordinary funds to armies in times of national peril. The difference in support given to rulers by landowner classes in periods of defence against an agressive neighbour and in periods of national expansion. His analysis of the economics of war is where Frost excels.
4. He also places the northern wars in their temporal, historical and geographical context by commenting on the developments in Western Europe, the 30 years war, the wars of the protestant reformation, the expansion of the Ottoman Turks in the south of the region, the incursions by Tatars from the asian steppes etc.
5. He analyses the impact of war on the societal makeup of the countries in the region. How landownership and serfdom developed, the evolution of the Cossack class, and so on.

If you are looking for an adventure story about knights charging into battle this is probably not the book for you. If you are looking for real history on the different approaches that can be taken to wage war, and how these strategies played out in short and long term, then this is a very useful read.

Because they are discrete essays it is possible to deal with them one at a time. Although the essays move chronologically through time, they deal with different sets of players and different types of tensions. Frost strives to uncover why any given set of strategies was successful in the time period where they worked.

Polish Lancers, Swedish Boy-Kings, Russian Musketeers..........2001-10-18

... what more could one possibly ask for in 400 pages? Between 1558 and 1720 the Baltic region was in an almost constant state of war. It began as a quadrangular contest for hegemony, Denmark vs. Russia vs. Sweden vs. Poland, and marked the evolution, in three of these states, of a modern military system led by an autocratic ruler. The unwillingness of fourth, Poland-Lithuania, to adapt its constitution and embrace a militarized state, led directly to its demise. Frost is quick, however, to combat the "traditional" Western history which is dismissive of Eastern military tactics and glibly attributes Russia's early setbacks and Poland's later humiliation to supposed "backwardness." As he explains, the great institutions of the East, such as the Polish cavalry, owed their existence to local conditions and geography. Nor was there any intrinsic reason why Tsarist Russia, as opposed to another political unit, should emerge victorious in the end. The one intriguing element in this drama is the rapid emergence and equally precipitous collapse of Sweden: the first mention of King Charles XII, doomed genius of the North, will quicken the pulse of even the most jaded reader. This is a great piece of scholarly writing.

A Quaker businessman from Philadelphia and a sometime officer of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society, he was committed to helping black Americans relocate to West Africa. This put him at the center of a discourse with abolitionists at home and abroad, including such leading thinkers as Joseph Jenkins Roberts, Mary Ann Shadd Cary, Henry Highland Garnet, Frederick Douglass, Alexander Crummell, George L. Stearns, and William Coppinger. Creative and restless, cantankerous and charismatic, these men and women dominated the struggle to end slavery and to achieve respect for African Americans.
