Good book for beginners.......2006-11-11
I have purchased several books on batik, this is the best of the lot. Book has very clear, step by step instructions and includes simple projects such as paper, pillow case, and works up to more complex projects. Each project is accompanied with photographs, so its pretty easy to follow and understand the process. Also nice color photo of each finished project.
great generous book.......2002-08-15
I've started doing batik just a couple of months ago, and this is the third book I have bought from Amazon on this subject. I think this is the best of them three because it has very very clear instructions on every project the author suggests, great photos of each step, she shows very clearly a lot of techniques to use on different things (check out the lamp shade it's great)and I think most important of all she is very generous about her knowledge of batik, explaining everything that could happen if you do this or that, and with every day words, not all the technical-chemical mumbo jumbo i've found in other books.
One last thing, check out her galley in the book: it's really beautiful!

Always Inspiring.......2003-02-05
I love this book! I'm buying a replacemnt for my dog-eared copy. I've used it as inspiration for fabric design, as collage material, painting sources, and for cheering myself up and getting me going when I don't feel like working.First published in the twenties, Seguy wanted to show exotic insects as inspiration for the designers and craftsmen of his time. This beautifu, reasonably priced book still does just that.

This remarkable book is a gripping eyewitness account of what it is like to live in Palestine as a refugee in your own homeland. Born in Jerusalem, Muna Hamzeh is a journalist who has been writing about Palestinian affairs since 1985. She first worked as a journalist in Washington DC, but moved back to Palestine in 1989 to cover the first Palestine Intifada Ð the war of stones. She then settled in Dheisheh, near Bethlehem, one of 59 Palestinian refugee camps that are considered the oldest refugee camps in the world.
The first part of the book consists of a diary which Hamzeh wrote between October 4th and December 4th 2000, telling the story of the second Intifada. Facing the tanks and armed guards of one of the best equipped armies in the world, the Palestinians have nothing. The anguish and terror that Muna and her friends face on daily basis is tangible. Who will be the next to die? Whose house will be the next to burn down?
The second part of the book provides the background to these current events. It describes what life has been like for Dheisheh's refugees since 1990, and explains why the second Intifada was a natural development of the Oslo peace accord. "Refugees in Our Own Land" is a rare insider's look into the hearts and minds of Palestinian refugees.

Promotes war.......2005-03-07
I'd love to find a book by a book by a Palestinian that truly seeks peace. This is not such a volume.
Beginning from the preface, which in hysterical tones accuses Israel of committing genocide, to the last pages, this is a book loaded with code-words calling for Israel's destruction. It's full of "humiliation," "murder," "genocide," and the like.
Had those things actually been perpetrated by Israel, I would be first in line to condemn them. But even the United Nations has concluded that Israel has not committed genocide, in Jenin, or anywhere else. As for murder, it seems that the only murder is taking place by Palestinians against Israeli civilians, and that whosoever amongst Palestinians has been killed has died either in battle, in the line of fire, or by accident, for which Israel has apologized. When, on the other hand, was the last time a Palestinian leader actually sought an end to suicide bombings, because they are evil, not because they are inexpedient.
My biggest problem with this book is that for most of the events that Hamzeh reports, she relies on hearsay. There has been no scientific or objective attempt to verify the information, much less the veracity of the sources. Even that might be all right, had the reporter not assumed an hysterical tone. But Hamzeh is so willing to believe everything nasty she hears about Israel or Israelis, or Jews for that matter, that nothing escapes unscathed.
I want peace, but books like this one--filled with blame and outright hatred--do nothing to promote it.

Occupation Personified.......2002-05-28
Few are the works that have given the personal touch to what it means to be living under the ugliest forms of occupation of modern times: The Israeli Occupation of West Bank and Gaza. Ms. Hamzeh's work is one of such works. Her diaries give a face to the people who are suffering on a daily basis faced with what an Apartheid-like situation - those people are the Palestinians who are being dispossessed and forced to live as refugees in their own land. Ms. Hamzeh's diaries and the additional essays give the personal touch and the political situation in the form of Oslo agreement that is shown to be nothing more than a mask that was intended all along to squeeze the Palestinians out of their land.
This book should be recommended reading to students of Politics who risk losing sight of what it means to live under Occupation while reading Academic oriented works, and this book should be displayed as a testimony by all peace loving people against Violence and Racism and pure Murder that is being applied against Palestinians on a daily basis.

What an experience.......2004-02-25
It's been a while since I embarked on that trip to Montana- the babysitter who joined her nine charges and their solo-mom on their vacation. While there were parts I had forgotten, there were also parts I clearly recall, like wanting to hop the next flight back to Texas once we got to our destination. Somehow through it all Carol has an amazing ability to create great camping trips and still keep her sanity and this book makes a wonderful travel-log of all the places she's been, most of which I did not experience first hand.
An interesting read with the addition of suggestions and advice for future campers. Who knows, I haven't been camping since that summer back in 1990, but my son and I are considering the concept now. Now all we need to find is a decent dutch oven and good pairs of hiking shoes.

I found this book to be absolutely fascinating. When I was growing up, we never had any adventures or vacations. I sit and read this book, then close my eyes, picturing myself there. I wish I could have had some of those adventures myself. Carol gives a great story on traveling with so many children. It really makes me feel like getting a trailer and taking my three kids out to see the world. I highly recommend that you read this book, it is so interesting and detailed.

A very informative compilation of camping/RV-ing tips learned on the road, mixed in with incredible stories of how this single mom involved her many children in active learning experiences on the road all over North America. She is an inspiration for other women who may lack her kind of guts to venture out of her comfort zone with common sense, a strong faith in God, and an insatiable drive for exploration. Having shared some time with the author in a camp setting in Alaska, I have learned much from her wealth of experiences first hand and vicariously through this book.

So many details of many other herbal books already available in market. The validity of herbal treatment is somehow not acceptable for conventional drug-oriented physicians.

Easy to read..........I don't agree with the 2 week warning...in some cases you better see your medical doctor immediately...Jim Hensen's unnecessary death comes to mind.......he delayed seeking medical care and died of a treatable infectious disease [pneumonia]. How often do we delay seeking the care of our medical doctor and then expect to be cured by the same MD immediately? I had the shock of my life recently.....I had a mild cold and took the standard herbal remedies given by my herbal "doctor". I didn't get better and got very sick almost to the point of being in the hospital. Luckily, my family medical doctor prescribed a potent Rx for me and within 24 hours I felt much better! None of the herbal medicines worked at all! The bill for the herbal "doctor" and all the "medicines" he gave me was MORE than the visit to my Family medical doctor and his RX!!!!! Thanks Doc!
Not for the herbalists at heart.......2000-11-29
In my opinion, this book is definitely written from a doctor's point of view. It does more to try and scare you from herbs, than it actually tells you the benefits. In every single description of every herb, it tells you basically if you don't see results within 2 weeks, to stop and call your doctor. Now, any of us that use and research herbals on a regular basis know that herbs can take some time to show results. Some even up to six months.

I found it to be a useful reference to with easy to read basic information. I especially liked the warnings about when to consult your doctor. This is a great reference book.

This is an excellent source for information on Naval ship handling. It is a little dated, but the basic concepts remain the same. It covers everything from working alongside the pier through towing.

Superlative information on square-riggers.......2005-05-03
As a relatively inexperienced captain of a small square-rigged vessel, this is an invaluable work. It has helped me learn to sail better. I have been using the book for reference for around a year now, and I have ordered a second copy for one of my crew (I'm unwilling to loan my copy out, as I keep using it).
For example, on one trip while sailing close-hauled, the wind speed increased, and, the boat which had been properly trimmed suddenly became unmanagably ardent. Reviewing the action afterwards, I was able to use Seamanship in the Age of Sail to determine that I should have trimmed my boat aft.
The book has all manner of excellent information, from how to properly tie a roband when securing a sail to yard, to what to do with one's anchors, to how studdingsails are used, to some of the history of sailing terminology. The illustrations are superb.
There are a few petty typos and formatting issues, and I could wish for a better index, but the quality of the textual information is top-notch and the illustrations and beautifully clear.

This book has to be read very thoroughly. It describes every detail conected to sailing and rigging of a warship in the period from 1620 to 1850. Construction of the hull itself is not so deeply covered, everything is focused on sailing, manouvers and rigging. Great source of information, a lot of simple sketches explaining described objects. Recommended for people deeply interested in subject. Others will be quickle overhelmed with a lot of technical details and dozens of new words
Exactly what I was looking for.......2004-05-14
After reading several O'Brian novels and purchasing the must-have 'A Sea of Words' I still found my grasp of the sailing terminology and expressions from the period woefully inadequate. This book has solved that and more. It covers every aspect of sailing the square rigged ship in an easy to understand contemporary style with outstanding illustrations to clarify things. The development and changes to sailing ships and their rigging over time was especially interesting to me. He also addresses changes in terminology over time as well, including the origin of terms and often provides similar expressions French, German, or Dutch. I elected to just skim the chapters on Reefing, Studdingsails, Working Ship In A Tideway, and Lowering And Hoisting Boats that had way more information than I needed, while re-reading the first eight chapters on more basic sailing aspects. The price of this book made me hesitate, but it turned out to be a great value.

If you want to know how old-time sailors did things, this book can tell you in impressive detail. For a sailor on a tall ship from the last century and a half, however, most of this book is irrelevant, and could better be replaced by Eagle Seamanship (at a fraction of the cost).
A Valuable Reference for 'Tall Ship' captains and crew!.......2002-10-12
'SEAMANSHIP IN THE AGE OF SAIL: An Account of the Shiphandling of the Sailing Man-Of-War 1600-1860, Based on Contemporary Sources'(c.1984) by John Harland, is probably one of the most informative and valuable collections of useful knowledge on sailship handling in the late 20th century!
A major value of this work is its ability to answer the questions developed during today's contemporary square rig sailing. It fully explained why sailboats are pulled by the wind and not pushed (Bernouilli's Principle); the advantages and disadvantages of square rig sailing over fore & aft sailing (downwinds & length of luff); why large square rig ships don't need a center board (a shifting of CLR, CG, & G); or why all sails were never set on a square rig when simply cruising (courses don't draw in a well).
The book is punctuated with pen & ink drawings as well as period photographs and deguerrotypes of ships in the act of a sail evolution or other shipboard activity. And in a time period where photography was not yet invented, the author used contemporary paintings of vessels to demonstrate an aspect of ship handling. Going further back into history, the author delved into the archeological record to demonstrate the origin or existance of a ship component pertinent to his ship handling argument.
SEAMANSHIP IN THE AGE OF SAIL further provided continuity answers as to why sails are shaped the way they are; or why the steeve of the bowsprit was lessened over time. The book gave valuable points on how to rig a ship while underway; how to rig the stun'sls; how to rig the braces, lifts, tacks, sheets, clews, and bunts; how to raise and lower heavy sails; how to bend sails to the spars; how to box haul or club haul the ship; and why the main topsail halyard is a heart attack waiting to happen.
Just as the serious and ambitious mate or deckhand in the 1700s was caught with a copy of Bowditch ('Practical Navigator') in his seachest; in the 2000s you can watch a mate or an ambitious O.S. walk up the brow to his sailship with a copy of SEAMANSHIP IN THE AGE OF SAIL tucked under his arm. Despite its large size and bulk, this book is well worth taking along into the cramped crews quarters for an informed reading at night.
SEAMANSHIP IN THE AGE OF SAIL is a wonderful archive of esoteric sailship handling maneuvers, equipment, gear, and nautical science. The author has done a wonderful job in his research and has provided a great resource to all sailing ship captains and mates.

viz., the virtual identity of optimal strategies of pure discovery with optimal deductive strategies. Questions to Nature, of course, must include observations and experiments. Hintikka shows, in fact, how the logic of experimental inquiry can be understood from the interrogative vantage point. Other important topics examined include induction (in a forgotten sense that has nevertheless played a role in science), explanation, the incommensurability of theories, theory-ladenness of observations, and identifiability.
