Penzler Pick, November 2000: I'm a sucker for good reference books about mystery fiction and this one is pretty good, if extremely limited to those who remember the great era of pulp magazines and collect them. Pulps (in case you are really young and don't know about them) were very inexpensive magazines that flourished during the period shortly before WWI to just after WWII. They were filled with fiction produced at a prodigious pace by writers who worked for a penny a word--or two cents if they established a reputation and a following. Beginning with general interest pulps, such as All-Story and Popular, the enormous success of these inexpensive treasure troves of fiction quickly brought spinoffs that were more narrowly focused. Fans of romance fiction could go to the newsstand for a copy of Love Adventures, Love Book Magazine,Love Fiction Monthly, Love Romances, Love Story Magazine, Love Short Stories, and dozens of others. Readers who wanted westerns had the same huge range, as did those who preferred science fiction, fantasy, sports, railroads, jungle stories, and so on.

But the most popular fiction of all was the mystery, and there were hundreds of specialty magazines that catered to that taste. Black Mask was the most famous, serving as the springboard for Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, among many others, but equally popular were Detective Fiction Weekly and Dime Detective, not to mention the great "hero" pulp, The Shadow. There was a lot of junk between the covers of many of these magazines, but a lot of great stuff, too, which is why they are so eagerly collected. And this is the perfect book for pulp collectors. Every pulp is listed in an easy-to-read format, together with the total number of issues for each publication. Best of all, because of the erratic publishing schedule for many of these periodicals, there is a listing for the date of every issue, so if the publisher skipped a week, or a month, or changed titles for a few issues, the completist will quickly see what the collection lacks. A quick flip to the entry for Black Mask, for example, reveals that it was published from April of 1920 through July of 1951, with a total of 340 issues, making it one of the longest running as well as the best of all mystery pulps. On the other hand, there was only one issue of Crime Fiction Stories, so if you have one and liked it, don't search for another. No pulp fan should be without this massive guide. --Otto Penzler

Extremely useful.......2000-10-07

Any pulp collector with any size collection needs this essential resource. The biggest issue in collecting the more obscure (and often less expensive!) pulps is the lack of information on these publications. This fills that and other information voids.

Plus, as any collector knows, anything that prompts one to go through one's collection is a "must have".

A Much Needed Pulp Reference.......2000-09-25

This book gathers together much information that for years has been scattered throughout very difficult to find out of print fan publications and expensive ($100+) library reference books.

BUT....the real heart of the matter here is the first appearance of checklists for 100's of titles. Several of these title were among the bestselling fiction magazines of the 20th century (i. e. Argosy which ran for more than 1500 issues-many of which were published weekly). Some of the titles included are so esoteric that I have not seen a single copy in over 25 years of pulp collecting!

The essays at the front of the book will be very helpful for the novice pulp collector and are entertaining for the long time pulp fan.

If you collect pulp magazines this book is pretty much a must have. I bought two, one to keep and one to use. Thanks to the authors for the staggering amount of research that went into this volume.

A Must-Buy for the true Pulp Collector!.......2000-09-23

This must truly rank as one of the most outstanding reference books to be published in recent years. For an area of collecting as popular as pulp magazines, it is truly amazing to realise that (outside of specialist subsets like SF, fantasy and horror) the area was largely unmapped prior to this volume.

For a collector interested in Western pulps and wanting to know if he had a complete set of, say, SPICY WESTERN STORIES, there was no way of finding out. As for knowing how many other Western pulps had existed, and when they were published, and who by, the average collector didn't stand a chance.

And if you were unlucky enough to be interested in even less popular areas - Sports, Love Stories, War or whatever - your position was even more hopeless as you were reduced to scanning eBay every day to see if something new had turned up.

With this ground-breasking volume, all that has changed. A mind-boggling 1000 different pulp titles have been meticulously researched, with precise details for each of exactly which issues were published (and when, and by whom).

As if that were not enough, each of the 320 pages has thumbnail reproductions of five covers of magazines on that page (as well as a gallery at the end with a further 180 thumbnails) so that I can see all these wonderful magazines at last. Before this wonderful book, I wondered if WILD GAME STORIES really existed (who would publish such a bizarre title) - now I not only know that it did, but I know it lasted for 6 issues in 1926 and can see two of the covers!

This book is certainly not for everyone. If you have only a passing interest in pulps you should buy Frank Robinson's excellent PULP CULTURE. If you're only interested in making money by looking for rare pulps cheap, then go buy a price guide. But if you're a true pulp fan/collector, you cannot afford to do without this volume.

Of course it has its faults. As a Brit, I regret the omission of many obscure UK-specific pulps and, while I understand their reason for omitting the "risque fiction magazines", I regret that too. However, I trust all this will be addressed in the eagerly-awaited SECOND ADVENTURE GUIDE TO THE PULPS (if only we can persuade these guys to write it!).

Pulp Checklist contains valuable info.......2000-09-23

The great pulp magazines are unfamiliar territory to many people, and this Guide offers valuable data for both the serious collector, and people with general interest in the pulps. Publishing dates, number of issues, as well as an overview of the magazines and other great information makes the Guide a valuable item. While bits and pieces of this information on individual titles are available in other forms, this is the first effort to pull it all together, including data on some very unusual and obscure titles. I found the book very useful, and I'm sure other pulp enthusiasts will too.

A Great Book for Pulp Fans.......2000-09-22

I enjoyed this book very much.

The book is a lot of fun to look at for anyone interested in pulp magazines. It is also a great tool for collectors in that it provides a check list of hundreds of issues. Using the book you can find out exactly how many issues of a particular magazine were published along with the publication dates.

The cover is a great work of art! The black and white interior illustrations are also nice.

I keep this book on my night stand and usually look through it everynight before bed.

The signs that Scott Carrier was a writer and not an athlete showed up early. At the age of 12, Carrier was the free safety and captain of the defense on his football team. During one game he got his teammates into a huddle and told them he was going to do something different:

We're going to line up in a six-three, but as they get set I'm going to say a haiku, and I want you guys to start moving around, dance around, stand on your head, do whatever you want. We'll kill them. Ready, break!

When the quarterback started his count, Carrier shouted, "The wind brings dry leaves enough to start a fire!" and his teammates froze. When asked by his coach what on earth he'd been doing, Carrier calmly replied, "We're running a haiku." When pressed for a rationale, he said simply, "It was just an idea. It didn't really work out like I thought it would. I'm ready to move on, if you are."

And move on he did, crisscrossing the country as a contributor for NPR for nearly two decades. Some of his radio pieces (as well as longer essays written for Esquire and Harper's) have been collected in Running After Antelope. Sometimes sad, sometimes haunting, often funny, Carrier writes about travels to war-torn areas, personal relationship crises, and, of course, his quest to chase down an antelope--thus perhaps validating his vertebrate-morphologist brother's so-called running hypothesis: that humans became upright in order to breathe better.

In the book's final essay, Carrier is chasing after an antelope he calls the Lone Male. His friends have kept the animal running for almost an hour when it crosses Carrier's path. Relatively fresh, he takes off after it, "And I laugh. I laugh and I run and it is, for sure, the best thing I've ever done. I have everything I need, the wilderness is unfolding in front of me."

In the end, little is resolved--the wars and relationships continue, the thesis remains unproven. But Carrier would be the first to remind us that the pursuit--be it for peace, love, or science--has a purpose unto itself. This book is a loosely woven collection of essays from Scott Carrier, some of which were read on various NPR programs, and others of which appeared in Esquire. Running throughout the essays are the author's attempts to outrun pronghorn (prodded by his brother's research into the evolution of breathing). But along the way, we hear about Carrier's other adventures in the world: reporting from places where most would fear to tread (the jungles of Mexico, Kashmir, Cambodia), trying to find the truth; hitchhiking across the country to collect an advance on a book; living in a dumpy house near the University of Utah with some way-out neighbors; and many more. In each, he examines the plight of the people whose paths cross his. His writing is very evocative and immediate, sad and funny. I sped through this little collection and might just look for something else by Carrier.

Scott doesn't tell us the story of his life in one time restrained, fact-stacked mess he lets us into his world with lucid storytelling.

From Cambodia to Mexico and into his city of orgin (Salt Lake) Scott uses words to more than paint pictures he transports the reader to the scene and injects them with emotion.

Highly recommended.
I read this about a year ago, so don't have the best memory of it, but remember it foundly.
The chapters that directly deal with "Running after antelope" are interesting scientifically in their own right. They broke the idea of a key role for long distance running in human evolution to the public far ahead of the popular press.
The rest of the book was entertaining and filled with good down home american stories as I remember..and inspiring in a semi depressive sort of way.

Hi all, I just wanted to say I just finished reading RUNNING AFTER ANTELOPE and it was a very nice, thoughful, and fast read. I found the idea of his obsession of running after antelope a bit ridiculous, which I am assuming was the point. I've never read, heard, or heard of Scott Carrier before so I have no prior knowledge to help fund my knowledge. I wanted to say though that the pieces about Cambodia, Kashmir, and Mexico were wonderful. They really made me think and if nothing else, I believe that a great writer must have the ability to make you look at life's absurdities, laugh, and ponder deeply about the world around you. Scott Carrier you have succeeded! May you forever run with the antelope!

Science, human nature, war reporting --- it's all here.......2004-05-18

A collection of pieces loosely based on the author's obsession, inspired by his biologist brother's studies, with literally running down a deer, as some say primitive men once did. In between the attempts to corraborate stories of Indian tribes who do this and trying to catch pronghorns in Wyoming, Carrier intersperses essays about his divorce, his attempts to produce radio segments on the road, his adventures in hitchhiking, and stories from global hot spots that he did for Esquire. None of these digressions in unwelcome, especially the latter, which are superb stories of the best and worst in human nature, of death and survival. Whether he's interviewing a Cambodian woman whose greatest relief is that she no longer has to spend her day making poison sticks to keep out the militia, or an Indian commander is Kashmir who says the daily carnage is only "friendly fire," Carrier knows how to get the quotes and anecdotes that stick with his readers for a long time.

Panama Canal Heritage Corridor .......2006-04-06

Most people associate Panama with the canal and Noriega. However, it has more biodiversity, historical heritage, large and unqiue indigenous populations than Costa Rica where most tourists go. Moreoever, Panama is much more safer than Costa Rica and you can even drink the water safely out of the tap! I predict the remnants of Panama's old Spanish colonial mule treasure trails through the jungle will become prime ecotourism destinations in the future. Isthmian Crossings is an excellent compendium of first person accounts of people who have crossed the Istmus by foot, mule back, and steam engine trains over the past 450 years. A lot of work went into collecting these accounts and reading them will bring to life the memories of so many who met the physical and cultural challenges of crossing the Isthmus.
