Book Description

Mount Desert has been one of America's favorite tourist destinations for over 150 years. As early as the 1840s, the lush landscape of this island on the Maine coast attracted artists and writers, who soon made Mount Desert's beauty famous with their paintings and publications. The stream of tourists that began traveling to the island after the Civil War prompted a building boom of cottages, hotels, and various buildings in Bar Harbor and other towns in the vicinity.

Fred Savage (1861–1924) was the most influential architect in the development of Mount Desert and northeastern Maine, designing over three hundred buildings. Richly illustrated with archival drawings, photographs, and newly commissioned color photography, Maine Cottages presents all of Savage's most important works while placing the life and career of this architect in the larger context of Mount Desert.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent Maine.......2006-01-21

I must confess I knew very little about the coast of Maine before picking up this spectacular book. The images are just so crisp and well executed. Mr. Savage designs fit the coast of Maine perfectly, they are so well sited and they really complement their breath taking settings. The text is quite informative and the images really make the houses and surrounding landscape come alive. One warning, after reading this book you will want to hop a plane to Maine.

5 out of 5 stars See What's Hidden by Trees and Private Acces Roads.......2005-08-19

The coast of main around Bar Harbour, and the houses on that coast are some of the most beautiful areas on any coast, anywhere. The problem is that the waterfront there is almost entirely privately owned with access restricted and with so much vegitation (trees) so that these views cannot be seen by the casual visitor.

A surprising amount of these houses are the work of or were influenced by one architect, Frederick L. Savage. This magnificant book takes us not only back in time through historic photographs, but also through the trees and down the private access roads to see these houses and their settings.

The style of these houses, most dating around 1900 have become almost a traditional United States style, although sometimes looking somewhat out of place when placed in a different kind of climate. These houses were designed to keep out the severe Maine winters, with small windows, strongly build roofs and the like.

5 out of 5 stars My Great-Grandfather was a GREAT Architect!.......2005-06-19

Fred L. Savage was my great-grandfather. As a descendent of Fred's only son, Francis Chase Savage, I couldn't be more proud of this beautiful book honoring the history of Mt. Desert Island, and my great-grandfather's place in it. I would only suggest one improvement: I wish that more photographs of Fred and his family would have been included, rather than the multi-page spread of photos of the family of one of his clients. Otherwise, Fred's work speaks for itself. It's breathtaking!

Edward Wesson is an excellent watercolor artist. (See the other reader's review for a style description).

However, unless you really want the hardback as a collector's item, you might consider the paperback alternative. It is still in print, and sells for 15 pounds (about $30 USD), direct from the publisher at http://www.davidandcharles.co.uk/

Perhaps Amazon.com might consider stocking the paperback version (hint, hint).

3 out of 5 stars Author writes book on buddy whose paintings he admires........1998-12-10

John Yardley's Watercolour book referred to Edward Wesson and so I ordered the book without a clue. It is a book I plan to keep. The author was writing about his painting friend, of his friend's painting philosophy and painting methods. He referred to Edward as Ted, etc. In Ranson's book on Edward Seago, he referred to the artist as Seago. The captions for the paintings of Wesson stated the obvious, "This is a sky picture in all its limpid glory, occupying three-quarters of the painting". It was a harbor painting with the sky occupying 3/4 of the painting. Wesson is predominently a landscape artist. His compositions (design) are strong and well thought out. His work is similar to Seago's, but tighter and contrastier. Yardley watercolors are looser of the three. Yardley likes closeups of people. Seago's work is more emotional. Splash here, splash there. Wesson seems more structured and staid. My "Best of Show" is on the dusk jacket: Norfolk,Wells-Next-To-The-Sea. It's a keeper.

      Product Description

This Glen E. Friedman book came about due to the insistence of many of the his friends and fans who wanted to see the out takes and extras of all of the different people he had shot over the years, particularly those who were not included in FUCK YOU HEROES, from the early skateboarding days at the West Lost Angeles (DogTown) school yards and the infamous Dog Bowl, to the Punk shows and riots in Hollywood and CBGB's, from the gangster ridden streets of the Compton Hip-Hop scene to the Hollis neighborhood of Queens New York that brought the world Run-DMC and Jam Master Jay, all the way through more recent band photo sessions, to his Liberty Street protest at Ground Zero in New York City. This new hard back edition covers up to 2004, and includes an additional 13 pages not in the original!

To paraphrase an earlier Amazon.com review

This book is unbelievable, if for nothing else, just for the sheer volume of Hardcore Punk, Hardcore Hip Hop legends, Hardcore Skateboarding (much Dogtown), and MORE, all in here. Friedman's previous book was much more selective, he says this is his "scrapbook" of leftovers but he's really downplaying it, it's much much more in several ways. This one contains a way larger cast of characters and is much more relaxed in it's presentation. I think it's cool for that. (This new HARDCOVER edition is phenominal. There's almost 400 pictures in this 180 page book, and it just looks amazing, so much energy comes off the pages. It's a perfect companion to FUCK YOU HEROES with the black cover.

Lots of amazing obscure PUNK shots, including the Bad Brains, Black Flag, Dead Kennedy's, Misfits, TSOL, Wierdos, Minutemen, Minor Threat, Husker Du, D.O.A., Social Distortion, Reagan Youth, Circle Jerks, the Make-Up, Suicidal Tendencies, Cramps, Big Boys, Ramones, GERMS, the Faith, Necros, Descendents, Adolescents, Stimulators, Discharge, the Damned, Murphy's Law, UK Subs, Angelic Upstarts, S.S. Decontrol, 999, BuzzCocks, tons of Fugazi.

Classic incredible Hip-Hop shots of Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, LL Cool Jay, Ice-T, South Central Cartel, Busy Bee, Slick Rick, Doug E. Fresh, Ultra Magnetic MC's, KRS-1, Kurtis Blow, King Tee, PUBLIC ENEMY, A Tribe Called Quest, Fat Boys, Eric B.& Rakim, (new edition extras: Ja Rule, Sean Combs), even U.T.F.O.!

The skate shots are of all the originators in DogTown (Tony Alva, Jay Adams, Shogo Kubo, Jim Muir, Paul Constantineau, and even Stacy Peralta - DogTown skate photos not in any of his other books - most notably of Jay Adams at the DogBowl.) Some great East Coast shots too, and classic early stuff of Duane Peters, Steve Caballero, Lance Mountain, "Gator", Neil Blender, Ray "Bones", "Wally", "Playboy" Bobby Piercy, Steve Alba, Alan "Ollie" Gelfand, Tom Groholski, Mike McGill, Eddie Elgura, Christian Hosoi, and more (Including in this new edition 2 pages of never before seen classic Tony Hawk from the early 80's, as well as a shot of a pre-teen Cara-Beth Burnside.)

Some of the other obscure interesting shots include 80's portraits of Rick Rubin, Russell Simmons and C.R.Stecyk . Music stuff of the DeadBoys'-Stiv Bators, the Go-Go's, Sting of the Police, Billy Idol when still in Generation- X, AC/DC, Iggy Pop, Johnny Thunders, (new edition extras: Beck, Pearl Jam, System Of A Down, (International) Noise Conspiracy, Femi Kuti, the Evens), and killer shots of Slayer.

Believe it or not there's more I didn't even mention. You will be pleasantly surprised by this book. It packs a great punch of classic shots that you won't find by any other photographer anywhere.

      A MUST HAVE BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars PRAISE FOR GLEN E. FRIEDMAN.......1997-05-15

"It's odd how many of the photographs are familiar. Five minutes with the book and I'm counting the number of shots that were on my bedroom wall growing up." -NEW YORK PRESS

"Many of these pictures are recognized as the subjects' definitive portraits, and it's a revelation to find they were all created by one man... Friedman is in awe of the loudest loud young mouths of the last fifteen years. He respects their impact immensely and he's committed to passing inspiration around." -WARP MAGAZINE

"Fuck You Heroes & Fuck You Too have all star casts that'll make any coffee table look dope." -SLAP MAGAZINE

"If Glen E. Friedman's pictures of seminal punk rockers, daredevil skateboarders and ground- breaking Def Jam artists were set to a soundtrack, it would have to be "Rebel Without A Pause". They, like the photographer, are energetic, gritty and awash with old school cool... If you're into grunge, hip-hop, or skateboarding now, this is the photo album of your roots." -SOURCE MAGAZINE

"The lineup of defiant faces and quotations he's assembled is a challenge to all up-and-comers." -REQUEST MAGAZINE

"This book is an important social document... `People need to see these pictures; they need to be reminded of what they were like when they were young.' And that according to Friedman is the point: `Who needs to grow up? All you do is lose your integrity, lost your ideals, lose your drive.'" -VIBE MAGAZINE

"Honesty, unfettered by dogma and convention, can only survive outside of limitations, Fuck You Heroes and Fuck You Too are pictorial documentation of that wide open world... Seeing these edgy, exciting images in one package is an unforgettable experience... FYH & FYT are not for those who think punk, rap or skating is a fashion statement. It's only for those who had no choice but to grow up different, real and true." -RIP MAGAZINE

"Up close and intense... It gets to the nut, then cracks it." -SPIN MAGAZINE

"In Friedman's images--bird-flipping skaters, snarling punks and posing-hard rappers alike-- the overarching message appears to be more than, simply, fuck you. It is instead fuck you with a subtext: I reject you outright. Reject you and all of your stupid, petty beliefs and limitations; I am against you and that for which you stand, so high and mighty. In the shorthand for , the sub-language of the moving body: the finger. I don't need to talk to you. Fuck you. Think for yourself." -NEW YORK PRESS

"For nearly two decades, Glen E. Friedman's noted photo work has served as a historical log on the seminal suburban/urban subculture. From his earliest days as a 13-year old skateboarder photographing top mid-to-late 70's skate icons like Jay Adams and Tony Alva, to his documentation of the burgeoning early-80's hard-core punk scene (captured in the `82 cult soft cover classic My Rules), to his high profile work as a renowned hip-hop photographer (most notably, the legendary album jackets for Ice T's Power and Public Enemy's Yo, Bum Rush The Show), Friedman has kept his finger on the pulse--not for fame and fortune but as a vital lifeline." -PAPER MAGAZINE

"Revealing, naturalistic and deserving of attention... Friedman's approach, his dedication and the quality of his photography should all be applauded." -BLUR MAGAZINE

"In twenty years these collections will be considered time capsules, an encyclopedia from an important decade and a half of modern mayhem and change in popular culture. What makes FYH & FYT fly is the intensity and honesty that looks you in the eye from Friedman's 1/250th second perspective." -JUXTAPOZ MAGAZINE

"Friedman has trained his lens on groups like Minor Threat, Black Flag, Fugazi, the Beastie Boys and other punk pioneers with the same skills with which he's frozen hip-hop pilgrims like L.L. Cool J and Chuck D. in honest, intimate moments of power and integrity. Friedman's camera seems to have been part of the action, so when Friedman's there, you're there. And Friedman has literally been there throughout his career. -LA VILLAGE VIEW

Nothing can really prepare you for the first visit to Saudi Arabia. No wonder ex-pats refer to it as "The Magic Kingdom"! We read all the usual guides, ranging from the commercially available ones to the highly enthusiastic Saudi government ones... We tried to learn a few phrases in advance and - as fairly experienced ex-pats, were looking forward to another new phase in our life. However, Saudi is so different that we might as well have saved ourselves all the bother! Jewel Dhuru's book definitely sums up the "Saudi experience" that we, and most of the other ex-pats we met, came eventually to enjoy. I would recommend it not only as a good read "per se" but also as a frank and revealing insight into the pangs and pleasures in store for those heading to the "Magic Kingdom".

As a woman who also lived in Saudi Arabia I could easily relate to her adventures and various encounters with the people of this mysterious country. An enjoyable and informative read. For a different perspective I would also recommend "Single in Saudi" by Genia, a single woman's story of life in Saudi.

                Book Description

So, when was the last time you tried to blow-dry a frog? Maybe never -- but if you're a parent, you'll appreciate how a mom's fast thinking earned her some special frog kisses from her young boys early one morning.

"Frogenstein" is only one of the 47 real-life funny stories included in Blow-Drying the Frog and Other Parenting Adventures. Collected from the pages of the award-winning journal Welcome Home, these essays run riot through all the stages of parenting, from one parent's difficulties in selecting a name for her expected-any-day baby, to another's experiences in taking teenage boys to the mall. And most of us will recognize that well-intentioned effort that turns into a minor disaster - the attempt to make applesauce that results in an exploding sewer system, the holiday gingerbread house project that doesn't turn out quite like the magazine picture, the new carpet that turns out to be a big mistake. These are real families, not the polished adults and precocious kids that bombard us in advertisements and media creations. These mothers and fathers deal with trips to the grocery store, suffer marital discord over what color to paint the bathroom, and go toe-to-toe with rambunctious toddlers. We laugh because we've been there ourselves, or we hear the voice of an exasperated friend in these tales. Blow-Drying the Frog will help you discover the humor in your parenting adventures -- and maybe even inspire your own storytelling.

Parent-to-parent connections and laughs - the best kind of stress relief—will have you returning again and again to read your favorites from this engaging 240-page book.

For over twenty years, the source of these stories, the monthly journal Welcome Home, has brought affirmation and information to parents across the U.S. and around the world. Winner of four Parents' Choice awards and a Parent's Guide to Children's Media Award for Outstanding Achievement in Parenting Materials, Welcome Home proudly invites parents to write about their feelings, insights and observations. We publish the best each month in 32 beautifully illustrated, advertisement-free pages. In addition to humorous stories, Welcome Home includes personal essays expressing the joys and challenges of parenthood, informative articles about family life and health, poetry, parent-to-parent problem solving, media watch and public policy articles, along with original artwork and photographs. Written, edited and illustrated by parents, Welcome Home is published by the nonprofit organization Family and Home Network. We invite parents everywhere to join our thoughtful and caring community.

5 out of 5 stars Real humor for real families.......2003-04-10

What a delight to read! Though the stories are from "everyday" parents, the book is professionally edited and produced. I appreciated and could relate to many of the stories. There is a good mix of humor, from rolling-on-the-floor-laughing to smiling-and-nodding-my-head. The stories have a nice variety of themes and are about many ages of children, not just the little ones. I bought one for myself and several more to give as gifts to parents, grandparents and parents-to-be!

5 out of 5 stars Parents Need This Book!.......2003-04-09

This book should be in every family library! The stories are short and funny -- so parents can get a quick fix of laughter while they go about their busy day. I've given copies to friends and family as gifts.

                5 out of 5 stars I laughed so hard.......2003-04-04

These stories were all funny, believable and entertaining. They helped take my mind off the world situaion and focus a little more on enjoying my kids. It was a relief to read a parenting book that doesn't make me feel guilty for whatever I'm not doing in a certain way or lectures me or repeats conversations that no real child and adult would ever have. These were real kids and real parents, in real situations, and I laughed out loud.

                Book Description

A controversial critique of United States foreign policy in the Middle East T he time has come for a serious debate on the future involvement of the United States in the Middle East, and this original and provocative analysis challenges the prevailing wisdom of the Washington foreign policy establishment. Hadar provides a sweeping reexamination of the conceptual bases of American policy and proposes a strategy of 'constructive disengagement' from the region, a policy of benign neglect as a way of promoting the interests of the United States as well as those of the people of the Middle East. Hadar calls for regional states and the European Union to take increased responsibility for security, economic growth, and political stability. This bold and innovative critique will inject new energy into the policy debate.

4 out of 5 stars An alternative view on foreign policy.......2006-03-15

Sandstorm is an alternative view of the American foreign policy in which Leon Hadar argues for what he describes as the gradual disengagement of the United States from the Middle East.
Hadar argues that over half a century now, America has been taking the main brunt of defending oil sources in the Middle East while this oil does not supply more than 17 percent of America's annual consumption. Compare this figure to that of funds the US spends annually on securing these oil barrels and one would conclude that - unlike how it is described - the Middle Eastern oil is not as cheap for America.
Accordingly, Hadar suggest that the US abandons its Cold War policy in the Middle East in favor of a more realistic and pragmatic policy that gives a bigger role to the Europeans there.
The book is overall interesting since it is one of the few works that give an alternative to the two dominant schools of foreign policies in the US namely Kissinger's policy of détente and maintaining status quos and that of the neoconservatives and their plans of redrawing the map of the world and engineering societies and their fates.
The book's style does not flow and a number of ideas are repeated in more than one place but overall, Hadar makes points and arguments that are worth examining.

                5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-02-15

Although I do not quite agree with all of the conclusions arrived at in Sandstorm, the book deserves nothing less than five stars for its discussion of a wide range of issues surrounding the Middle East and its information and commentary on modern Middle East history. This is a great read for anyone interested in, among other things, the European-American dispute over Middle East policy, the neoconservative strategy for the region, problems associated with maintaining hegemony in the Middle East, the truth about oil, Arab and Israeli lobbyists in Washington, and the Arab-Israeli conflict, of which there is a wealth of sound analysis. Hadar's book presents many facts and makes many strong points that clearly refute prevalent thinking on many of these and other related issues.

Hadar refers to the decades-old U.S. policy in the Middle East that originated during the Cold War era, and which he contends was suitable for the circumstances of the Cold War, as America's Middle East Paradigm, or MEP. The basic purpose of the book is to show that the high level of intervention the MEP requires is no longer necessary with the Soviet Union gone.

Here are some of Hadar's most important points:

U.S. interests are being damaged by the continuing involvement in the Middle East, which tends to only create new problems, e.g. the funding of the mujahedeen in Afghanistan during the 1980s gave birth to Al-Qaeda and, more recently, a Shiite fundamentalist government has risen to power in Iraq thanks to the removal of Saddam's military regime.

There is an inherent contradiction in the Bush administration's agenda of imperialism and spreading democracy, because the U.S.'s dominant position in the Middle East will only be threatened and weakened by the results of democratic elections in the region [this book was published too soon to mention it, but the recent Hamas victory in the Palestinian elections serves as proof of Hadar's argument].

The dispute between Europe and the U.S. over Middle East policies generally and the war in Iraq particularly is not a clash between political cultures, but rather a clash caused by differing interests; this point runs contrary to what neoconservatives say on a regular basis, and Hadar completely shoots down their arguments in explaining this point.

The U.S. should stop providing military and economic aid to Middle East elites because it only encourages them to refrain from reform and agreement with rivals in their own countries, and thereby prevents the development of any sort of political legitimacy in the Middle East.

A major misconception is that the U.S. economy is dependent on Middle Eastern oil; in reality, the largest source of foreign oil for the U.S. is Latin America and the U.S. gets the overwhelming majority [90% according to oil expert Daniel Yergin] of its crude oil supplies from parts of the world other than the Middle East.

With the Soviet Union defunct, the U.S. no longer should be securing access to Middle Eastern oil for the Europeans and the Japanese, who are, unlike the U.S., both dependent on the region's oil and should now start to pay the military and economic costs of protecting access to it.

With the Cold War over, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has become a local struggle over territory and is no longer a stage of global competition between great superpowers.

By pursuing a radical Zionist agenda, Israeli nationalist governments make their country dependent on the United States for security and protection.

The Palestinian-Israeli conflict will only end when both sides are exhausted and engage in direct negotiations, as in the case of the 1993 Oslo accords, when the U.S. was not involved at all in the talks.

U.S. involvement in the Arab-Israeli conflict makes peace less likely and ultimately ignites anti-Americanism in the Arab world because it creates expectations that are never realized; this was demonstrated by the Clinton administration's hyperactive diplomatic role in the failed Camp David negotiations that helped trigger the Second Intifadah.

U.S. attempts at resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict serve neither U.S. interests nor Israeli interests.

It is simply impossible for any one country, or "actor," to impose a single agenda on the Middle East because of the various tribal, religious, ethnic, national, regional, and extra regional political players in the Middle East and the shifting patterns of allegiances that they form and the counter-efforts of securing support of local and international powers that they make when they're unsatisfied with the status quo or certain developments; this is a point that really needs to be made to those who truly believe that a democratic transformation of the region can take place.

Both the administrations of the first President Bush and Clinton did not adjust U.S. policies in the Middle East in order to respond to the changing realities of the post-Cold War era; instead they erroneously continued the Cold War-era pursuit of regional hegemony.

5 out of 5 stars very original analysis.......2005-07-31

I've read many of the books on Iraq and U.S. policy in the Middle East that were published in recent months and this is really one of the best and on the level of Michael Scheuer's Imperial Hubris. I decided to get the book after reading the review by Andrew Bacevich in the American Conservative whose books I enjoyed reading. The Author Leon Hadar really does a great job challenging much of the conventional wisdom regarding the Middle East, especially the idea that America is "dependent" on oil from the region or that we always need to "do something" to make peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians. I think that he makes a great point when he argues that we should have reassessed our commitments in the Middle East when the Cold War ended but that istead we got drawn even deeper into the region's problems since 1991 and ingited anti-Americanism that brought about 9/11. I think that is discussion of European-American relationshio is very original especially the sugegstion that the two sides have competing strategic and economic interest in the region and that the Europeans should do more to protect their interests in the Middle East. The books is not "heavy" like some of the academic stuff on the Middle East that comes out for time to time. It's very readable and thought provoking. Hadar works for the Cato Institute with which I disagree on doemstic issues. But this book in on foreign policy and the realisitc approach of the author fits with mine. I recommend!

                5 out of 5 stars A Powerful Policy Critique.......2005-07-30

It is rare to find a bold, independent analysis of U.S. policy in the Middle East. Leon Hardar's "Sandstorm" presents a clear picture that U.S. policy follows an obsolete Cold War paradigm that incurs huge costs. It is heading for a "destructive disengagement." His remedy: less U.S. intervention, more European involvement, and a re-orientation of Israel's foreign policy. Hardar knows the complex history of the Middle East, and that gives his book much authority.

                Book Description

This lively study examines the poetic writings of Nizaring;riacute; Quhistaring;niacute;, one of the few Ismaili authors who survived the Mongol invasion of Iran in the 13th century. The invasion put an end to Ismaili political aspirations and independence until the 16th-century Safavid dynasty. The evidence of Nizaring;riacute;'s writings demonstrates that during the period of the invasion the Ismaili community did not lose their internal organizational structure, and that they continued to operate in different forms through the Mongol period in Persian history.

                5 out of 5 stars Informative Read.......2007-05-10

I read this book last summer and found it to be quite detailed and informative. The reader will begin to understand life as it was during that period through Nizårí Quhiståní's writings.

I was pleasantly surprised and reassured to know that the word "wine" was commonly used metaphorically during that time in poetry. The author makes a clear distinction that "wine" was used in Nizårí Quhiståní's writings as a literary term and not a literal one.

For those that are interested in the Mongolian period, especially Central Asians and Chinese Muslims, this gives additional background as to how Islam spread in those areas.
