Book Description

Mary Colter may well be the best-known unknown architect in the world: her buildings at the Grand Canyon National Park-which include Lookout Tower, Hopi House, Bright Angel Lodge, and many others-are admired by almost five million visitors a year.

This extraordinary book about an extraordinary woman weaves together three stories-the remarkable career of a woman in a man's profession during the late 19th century; the creation of a building and interior style drawn from regional history and landscape; and the exploitation, largely at the hands of the railroads, of the American Southwest for leisure travel.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Detailed, sympathetic book!.......2002-12-24

Mary Colter was a woman ahead of her time --- an architect and interior designer when few women attempted it. She interwove rustic techniques, local materials and American Indian themes into buildings and designs well before that was accepted by others in her professions. Her rustic buildings at Grand Canyon National Park still survive to the delight of many visitors. Colter was at times a prefectionist, hard to get along with, a workaholic and extremely demanding of herself and her co-workers. Yet the author shows us her life and work with sympathy as well as depth. This book is well illustrated with color and black and white photos. Well researched. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It answered all my questions!

3 out of 5 stars Not quite Oregon specific.......2005-04-27

Sorry to borrow the same title as Michael Johnson, but I could easily say "ditto". To say it in my own words, I think if you changed a few of the photos and some references, this book could easily be called "Photographing Washington" or "Photographing California". In fact, if you replaced the references of oceans to lakes, you could almost call it "Photographing Michigan".

The point being is that the book has chapters dedicated to different aspects of photography (oceans, waterfalls, forests, etc.) and then lists some very general references to places in Oregon to find these, like "Whalehead Beach", or some state parks. But these could just as easily be anywhere - California, Washington, etc. There is no specific information like "take this trail in the spring in the morning for the best waterfall shot".

      4 out of 5 stars Good overview.......2004-04-18

This book gives you a good overview for getting professional results for photographing the Oregon scenery. Though the book was written before the digital camera boom there is still much that can been gleaned from a couple of readings of the material.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite Oregon specific.......2003-03-20

I am planning a trip to the Oregon coast this summer and greatly anticipated the arrival of this book. It seemed a perfect fit for my needs. My initial reaction to the book is disappointing.

The book is organized by photographic subject such as waterallfs, shorelines, valleys, sunset, etc. It gives advice o the lens selection, camera placement, and exposure for photographing each subject. At the end of each topic is a list of Oregon specific locations for photographing these subjects.

I can find plenty of books on how to photograph waterfalls or sunsets. What I was hoping for was advice on specific beaches or locations in Oregon. This book will not give you that. Look for places on the web for "Photograph America" and "Phototraveler" for location specific advice.

Groo has relatives? The mind boggles in sheer, complete and utter disbelief. No matter who you are, this fact is sure to be horrifying. Even worse, there are multiple generations still alive. Someone gets the bright idea to try and make more generations of Groo types, and organises a marriage.
        Scary.

        Groo Kingdom

Here we meet sister Grooella and Granny Groo, the proof that Groo's nature is inherited and that the thing worse than a bone-head barbarian warrior whom any intelligent creature flees from is an fat, old gypsy lady who uses him in various scams. Groo falls into her schemes, and after several tart little bilking jobs, he get's married and botches another marriage scam. Fed up, Granny sells him to a slave trader - who would never have bought him if he'd known who he was buying. Which becomes apparent eventually. Groo then decides to get some new clothes and as everyone knows calamity results. Groo get's his bare pink bottom spanked which caused some censors fits! (Oh, the horror of Groo's pink bottom on display!) Note: the printing quality is generally okay to very good for the series, but this is generally a collection for Groo fans and comic book fans. The binding on some of my copies is broken (these are soft backs) and the print is now and then not the greatest. As a fan, I bought every collection I could, and enjoy them despite this! Not though for long-term pristine collectors though.

        5 out of 5 stars More Groo!.......2002-03-28

This collection has Groo with his GrannyGroo. Old Granny is a scam artist and is way smarter than Groo. She has him involved with many of her plans and they all go bad (was anything else expected?). Still, the Groo crew makes it all funny with the same jokes they been using for years. Groo gets in a fray and people run away.

                      Book Description

Parents can have awesome relationships with their children, but it is not enough to fill them with Bible facts, verses, and demand of them certain desired behaviors - you must first capture their hearts. When a child is young, parents can impose their will. When the child is older, however, if the parent hasn't won his heart, all the force in the world will only serve to drive him farther and farther away. How can parents win the hearts of their children? It all starts with romance - exactly as God woos us. Not just another parenting book, Monte Swan takes an entirely new approach to reaching the heart of a child . . . the way of romance. Desiring to lead their children to a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, parents will learn the very best approach to open the hearts of their children. Swan teaches parents how they can enter into the world of their children and give them not only what they long for, but what they need . . . an environment of total love and security from which they can conquer the challenges life has to offer. He demonstrates how any parent can turn the tables on the world and romance the hearts of their children to the love of God. With practical advice in real-life parenting situations, Swan equips parents first with the enthusiasm for the challenge ahead and then with concrete ways to win the heart of any child.

I found Monte's book to be very inspiring. Far from the
"old skool" cliche of "children are to be seen and not heard". I loved the fact that he included the children in on major desicions that involved them.

I believe the book and concepts to be scriptual and conveying the true essence of 'greater love has no man than to lay down his life for a friend". I could be debated that his ideas are to simple and will only lead to confused and frustrated parents, I would disagree. As a man who wants to love his children and communicate the Love he has them and for God and share with them the power of living a close relationship to God.

In our world it is good to have healthy direction and one that comes with the readability.

                      One I reccomend.

1 out of 5 stars Intriguing but not scriptural.......2004-06-25

I commend Monte Swan for the great investment of himself he has made in his children's lives. I am glad for him and his family that this methodology has worked well in their experience but it ignores two foundational facts that scripture teach: "Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child" and "All men have sinned and fall short of the glory of God".

Mr. Swan recalls two episodes that required parental-directed negative consequences in a child's life: One in his own childhood and the other in his son's (when Mr. Swan took the punishment for his son). Other episodes that destroyed property or were careless were seen as the child discovering their talents and creativity. Parental responses (to be romancing your child's heart) needed to be encouraging and joining in the fun. "It brought a smile to my lips."

Mr. Swan contends that children are "naturally generous".

The other warning I have here is that the parent is instructed to provide resources to the point of sacrifice for a child's interest, even if it is temporary. This attitude could continue the self-centeredness that we are born with and it de-emphasizes God's call to be a servant. Another article I read called this the "Prince Syndrome"--we are raising children as the center of our worlds. Instead, let's view children as a valuable part of our family.

Though Mr. Swan does make some valuable points in romancing our children, his book would have been better if it had been balanced with Hebrews recount of God disciplining his sons as proof of His love.

                      5 out of 5 stars I loved this book!.......2004-06-22

Monte has such a refreshing view of parenting. I really savored each chapter in this book. I have to agree with the other reviewer who recommended "Shepherding Your Child's Heart" as more of a parenting "manual" for raising/disciplining children. Romancing Your Child's Heart is not a how-to manual. Instead, it reminds us to relax more, and find Joy in parenting. I highly recommend this book!

2 out of 5 stars Good as a companion book only!.......2003-11-07

Although I found the general idea of this book helpful the practical application was wanting. The title will catch you but after the first five chapters you will find it is filled far more with recollections from the authors childhood then with realistic practical application. At times this book is slightly unbelievable. This book should be read only after solid biblical child rearing is in place in your home (read Shepherding a Child's Heart). It can help to keep things balanced but without a solid foundation I fear this book could bring about other less profitable results. I can say I gained a better perspective of the need to value and take time with my children but that could have been accomplished with less enlarged portrayals of sometimes unrealistic allowances. I would recommend this book but only cautiously.

We've all known sincere Christian parents who diligently tried to protect their children from evil but ended up losing them anyway. Could there be a missing ingredient in today's parenting models? Monte Swan shares a fresh vision: Just as God romances us, so we must romance our children. Parents will discover that the best approach to opening their children's hearts is to lead them to an intimate relationship with God, thus building up their resistance to evil. Swan equips parents with enthusiasm for the challenge ahead - and with concrete ways to win their children's hearts.

                        Book Description

In this gripping true-grit adventure story, award-winning journalist Earl Swift accompanies an elite scientific team on a search for a military pilot lost thirty years ago in Southeast Asia. The recovery mission is part of an effort by the military's Central Identification Laboratory--Hawaii (CILHI), the largest forensic lab in the world, whose methods combine the latest in forensic technology with old-fashioned bushwhacking, archaeology, and detective work. The quest to find Major Jack Barker and his three-man helicopter crew brings the team to deeply impoverished Laos, where they comb the jungle floor for clues to the decades-old crash amid vipers, monsoons, and unexploded bombs. Expertly recounted, Where They Lay is a suspenseful, often harrowing tale of mud, sweat and science.

I am reading this book at the present time. Dee Barker Gowin bought our house in suburban Atlanta just after her husband's death. I had been unaware of the activities to recover Major Barker. Her strength and courage were evident back then and it is reassuring to know that after all these years her family got answers. From that stand point, it has to be worthwhile to look for remains. Several friends died in Vietnam and I remember them well. My best to Dee and her family.

                                  Book Description

This is an analytical introduction to key historical and philosophical moments in the history of science, in twenty-two sections, written by a remarkably accomplished collection of authors at the forefronts of the disciplines of history and philosophy of science. The volume challenges the strongly empirical tendencies of earlier work in the field, and focuses its analysis on the notion of "bifurcations": points where the sciences took a new turn or direction, where decisions or observations of such importance were taken that they are the stable intersections between the many sub disciplines and subjects that go to make up the sciences. Despite being the work of a large number of authors, Serres and his team have collaborated closely to produce a book that has unanimity of style and purpose. In his preface to the book, Serres explains the reasons behind its structure, and some of the relationships between the various bifurcations in the flow of history and the work of time.
