YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK .......2007-08-22

Simply put this book is a MUST READ for anyone intersted in any aspect of Sustainable and Ecological Design. It should be read right along with Permaculture by Mollison, the Passive Solar Handbook by Mazria, Rainwater Harvesting by Lancaster, and ecocities to Living Machines by Todd. Even if you aren't specifically interested in making a swimming pool (which you will be after reading it) the insights into the workings of hydro-ecologies and how to design natural systems are invaluable!

If you aren't interested in the whole range of sustainability but just this particular topic of pool design then this book is STILL A MUST READ. If you're an ecologist who wants to make a pool, or a pool designer who wants to do something ecological this book provides an excellent layman's understanding of ecological design, with good technical and artistic advice for how to do it, and good technical and artistic advice for swimming pool construction.

I would still advise you to also purchase the book Poolscaping as a companion to this one.

This is an all around excellent book buy it now.

Beautiful photos; strange text.......2007-08-01

Thumbing through the book will make you want to move to Austria or Germany where beautiful "natural" pools are somehat established. Why is the U. S. so environmentally backward? Unfortunately, the text is awkwardly translated at times such that one has to struggle to figure out what is meant with limited success.The assumption is that one is swimming only in the summer, but in California we may want to swim year round. Useful especially since so little information is available. Can't understand why the publisher didn't insist on professional proofreading.Buy it for inspiration, or wait for the next edition, or wait for one more applicable to your area. It does provide info in the back about two U.S resources, one in CA.

Is the book i need for learning on natural swimming pool. Now i can make my own pool

Surprisingly COMPREHENSIVE!.......2007-02-09

This large sized book covered the subject exceedingly well in lots of color photos with explanations and, more importantly, in lots of diagrams and nuts and bolts descriptions. I only read sections here and there but what I did read clearly indicated to me that you could actually use this book to build a natural swimming pool. At the least, you could definitely make a solid decision whether or not you could build or would want to build such a pool on your property. These pools are basically like salt water aquariums in that you have to make a biosphere and monitor it. In some ways it's not as easy as it sounds but also not as hard as it sounds. However, start up takes time and it can be tricky to finally reach environmental stabilization. I am not going to build a natural pool but I still found this book very useful. At the end this book are MANY pages of water plants and trees recommended for certain types of water areas. There are zone maps of the US included for reference. So even if you just want to make a little ornamental fountain in a big pot on the patio deck or a pond or a bog out back, this book has a VERY comprehensive set of plant lists you will find exceedingly useful. 18 pages of them. Categories include Submerged Plants, Floating Plants, Floating Leaved Plants, Shallow Marginal Plants, Deep Marginal Plants, Moisture-loving Plants, Bog/Marsh Plants, Waterside Plats-Trees & Shrubs, Ferns, Grasses Sedges Reeds and Rushes. Botanical and Common Names are listed along with height, spread, water depth, flower color, flower period, foliage, position, comments and plant zone. It's the best I've seen in any book so far.

As a novice, searching books for the best instructions, I feel as though I have found a gold mine in Helen Ven Wyk's Color Recipes 2.The book is chock full of simple and informative instructions with many beautiful color illustrations. I am enjoying her book as I enjoyed her instructional videos on PBS. Perfect for the beginning artist.

This is one of three books by the late Helen Van Wyk all of which are very good. She has the gift of a teacher who can convey ideas simply and clearly. The book is filled with pages of examples in color which are practical and immediately useful. She gives examples of dozens and dozens of items and how to paint them. This is a great resource book for the artist. Check out her other two books also.

General opinion and not really an review. I think this book is nothing more than a well packaged manual. In fact, I don't see anything more than what I can get from the provided manual.

A Book not worthy of the Camera.......2001-09-05

If your looking for in depth coverage on the F5 give this book a miss. The users manual covers all that is in it, and even that which it covers in not clear. I bought the book looking for deeper answers and descriptions of this great camera and was sorely disappointed in what I found. It seemed more of a general description of the camera and Nikon products, almost a sales book for Nikon!! I wish someone would write something worthy of this greatest of cameras.

Useful in one way..........2000-07-09

I agree with the general opinion of those commenting on this book...I just purchased a new F5 and picked up this book at the register (it was shrink wrapped for obvious reasons). It is nothing more then a rewrite of the user manual, pure and simple. However, my wife has been showing a growing interest in photography and read this book cover to cover (where she never would have read the users manual) and benefited from it. It has a non-manual style and as such did have value to someone who traditionally won't or doesn't read manuals, but should. No value (or none I found) personally, but my wife did, by default, actually read a manual end to end ;-)

Sounds great, less filling.......2000-04-22

This book was quite disappointing, in that it was written just after the Nikon F5 came out and has little information that cannot be found in the user's manual. It does attempt to be as sycophantic as possible to pro photographers ("Since the reader is undoubtedly a pro, I won't bother telling you how this part works..."). It does not cover the PC software, since it was not available when written. It desperately needs an overhaul, it is basically worthless in the present form.

Rip-off.......1999-08-09

You'll know what a rip-off really means once you've bought this book and read it. A revised edition is imperative, probably written by somebody like Moose Peterson. The guide book on the F90X written by him was excellent. I hope the revised edition will be made available at a highly discounted rate to those who bought the original edition.

Adult full-color graphic novel.

This graphic novel was originally published as three separate comic magazines. The first chapter takes place in London.

The first chapter opens with Lilian and Agatha sharing a bath together and Mr. Holmes and Dr. Freud in the next room. While Mr. Holmes and Dr. Freud wait in the next room, the girls activity heat up. When the girls emerge, they note that they have been having the same nightmares, so they head off to visit a friend of Dr. Freud that knows something about hypnosis and repressed memories. We meet this friend (Dr. Fester) of Dr. Freud abusing one of his patients while she is under hypnosis.

While the girls and Dr. Freud are distracted, Holmes wanders off to investigate the case of a missing woman. And oddly enough, after exiting a morgue, Holmes runs across the woman in the process of being abducted.

Back at Dr. Festers, the girls enter a state of hypnosis and recall their nightmares, which involves something called "The Institute." Apparently this Institute has something to do with Ishtar and a lot of naked women. Oh, and Ishtar is a she-male. While Ishtar and the women start to attack Lilian and Agatha, the good doctors try to bring the girls out of hypnosis. Agatha awakens, but they can't revive Lilian. While this state of affairs is occurring, Mr. Holmes enters the room leading the woman that he had been seeking. Holmes wants only Freud to work on the girl because of Dr. Festers history (which is now shown in fuzzy pink light - apparently one of Fester's patients became very attached to Fester and then died).

Agatha and Holmes return home, leaving Lilian behind. Lilian "wakes" up to find herself in a strange room. Apparently the world Lilian inhabits is really like that Matrix movie. Lilian wakes up with a lot of things connecting to her in some watery stuff. She disconnects herself and gets out of the pod. A robot comes by and end of the first chapter.

Chapter Two: Lilian is still stuck "awake" in this Matrix like world, which appears to be controlled by the she-male Ishtar. Meanwhile, while Watson is laid up in bed ill, his niece Rhona comes by to provide him some care. In his ill state, Watson imagines Holmes and his niece fondling each other right in front of him. Dorian Grey joins the fun as an owner of an entertainment facility that uses slaves to provide entertainment for his guests. Grey's men turn up at Watson's and attack Agatha and Rhona, strip them, and end up beaten by the girls. Meanwhile Lilian's story in the "real world" continues with the she-male. Apparently, the computer feeds off sexual energy. And now Agatha and Rhona are captured, and some strange magic overcomes them and they "sleep" with each other. And the chapter ends.

Chapter three: While ill, Watson "accidentally" attacks and rapes his nurse. The police arrive and arrest the nurse, as one of Dr. Moriarty's spies. The girls at Grey's place continue their strange horniness and Lilian tries to escape from the computer. More bondage and sex fill out the rest of the chapter (don't want to give everything away).

Overall, the drawing is good, but at times the earlier black & white nature of the drawing leaks through, and destroys some of the artwork (though it is less of a problem than in the previous book). This book is weaker than the two first volumes and about on a same level of quality with the third volume. The book contains bondage, whipping, she-males, and more. There is a fifth volume in the series, but it currently is still in magazine form (and is not that good; Agatha and Lilian are old now and the story involves their grandkids).

very good definition of conventional war strategies.......2005-07-01

This is a good book that clearly defines three modes of conventional war: 1) limited territiorial engagments for border regions and disputed territiories (e.g. the Franco-German disputes over Alsace-Lorriane); 2) total wars of attrition, in which entire industrial economies are mobilized over an extended front (e.g. WWI); 3) the blitzkrieg, in which supply lines and communications are cut so that the entire structure of an enemy crumbles and can be quickly overrun (e.g. WWII). As far as it goes, this is very interesting and brilliantly described. However, it does not cover la guerre subversive, or guerilla wars, as we saw in Vietnam and are seeing today in Irak with the suicide bombers. While this might be called a war of attrition, it does not really fit into the framework that Mearsheimer presented, as the country is already occupied and there is no front. While I enjoyed the analysis of the three types above, what I was looking for was the uncovered type. Nonethless, this is an excellent book and well worth the read.

This is the first experimental study to compare difference in the development of tolerance against toxic Microcystis among multi-species of cladocerans (Daphnia, Moina and Ceriodaphnia) pre-exposed to two M. aeruginosa PCC7820 strains (MC-containing and MC-free). Zooplankton were divided into S population (fed Scenedesmus), M-F population (fed Scenedesmus+MC-free Microcystis), and M-C population (fed Scenedesmus+MC-containing Microcystis). M-F and M-C populations were pre-exposed to Microcystis strains for 4weeks, and their newborns were collected for experiments. A pre-exposure to MC-containing or MC-free Microcystis increased tolerance against toxic Microcystis. The marked increases in survival rate and median lethal time (LT"5"0, 100-194% increase) in the M-C population of Ceriodaphnia suggest that small-sized cladocerans may develop stronger tolerance against Microcystis than large-sized ones when both groups are exposed to toxic Microcystis. This may explain why dominant Daphnia is usually replaced by small-sized cladocerans when cyanobacteria bloomed in summer in eutrophic lakes.

Algorithms were developed from LANDSAT 7 ETM+ data for the July 1, 2000 overpass and LANDSAT 5 Thematic Mapper (TM) data for the September 27, 2000 overpass for Path 20 Row 31 (including Toledo, OH) to measure relative phycocyanin content (PC) and turbidity in the western basin of Lake Erie. Water samples were collected from discrete hydrographic stations arranged in a 20x4 km grid adjacent to the Ohio shoreline during a 6-h period spanning each of the two LANDSAT overpasses. The samples were analyzed for chlorophyll (chl) a content and turbidity. In addition, the concentration of phycocyanin, a light-harvesting pigment associated with cyanobacteria, was estimated from the ratio of phycocyanin/chl a in vivo fluorescence (IVPF/IVCF). A dark-object-subtracted, spectral ratio model derived from the July 1, 2000 data was found to be the most robust, when applied to the September 27, 2000 data. The same July 1, 2000 model (or algorithm) for PC was then applied to LANDSAT 7 ETM+ frames for July 16 and August 1, 2002 of the Path 19 Row 31 frame (including Cleveland, OH) and to the August 8, 2002 frame of Path 20 Row 31. Moderate, very low, and high PC values were detected in the western basin of Lake Erie on July 16, August, 1, and August 8, 2002, respectively. On September 17, 2002, local media reported a large Microcystis bloom in the western basin. The high PC values on August 8, 2002 may have represented early stage detection of the large Microcystis bloom that was reported 5 weeks later. The PC algorithm derived in this study will improve our understanding of the temporal and spatial dynamics of cyanobacterial bloom formation in Lake Erie and other systems. It may also serve to alert municipalities to the presence of potentially toxic bloom events.
