When Crown Prince Gustaf returned from Versailles in 1771 to ascend the throne of Sweden, he was determined to give his country a leading place in Europe culturally as well as politically. The style he fostered--Neoclassicism--was itself an international movement; there are echos in the interiors displayed here of the Louis XVI and Empire modes. Pieces of furniture may reflect French, English, or German influences, or be copied from objects discovered at Pompeii--but all are suffused by a distinctively Swedish freshness and the northern light. From royal salons to modest spatter-painted Biedermeier halls, Hkan Groth and Fritz von der Schulenburg open the doors on an astonishing sequence of interiors; some, intensely private, are little known even in Sweden. The evocative photographs, all specially taken for this book, present in detail the decoration and furnishings of twenty houses and apartments. The text traces the evolution of the Neoclassical style in Sweden, placing it in its wider European context, and explores each of the buildings and its history. Plans, and original drawings by the architects and designers, complete the picture. These beautiful interiors are of unique value today not only as treasure houses of superb craftsmanship but also as a stimulus to contemporary decorators, and as a reminder that an international language can be spoken in a delightfully personal way.

This book is a treasure of neoclassicism in Sweden. It is supported by sensible (not gushy interior design talk) text and is logically sequenced.

The pictures and additional material is excellent; although the lighting in some of the photographs is less than perfect.

This is an inspirational reference for the topic.

This is another great book for Swedish decorative detail .A great asset in the decorative artist`s Library.A good source for Bolander`s beautiful wall murals. Great photography with excellent detail shots .A beautiful and knowledgable book. I am a decorative artist specializing in custom painted furniture for decorators and designers and have found this book to be a great resource and very helpful in my work.

Brisk Retrospective of Psychedelic Artist.......2006-09-13

This 118-page trade paperback is a fair introduction to the work of Stanley "Mouse" Miller, best-known for the series of rock posters he and collaborator Alton Kelley created for the San Francisco music hall scene between 1966 and 1968. Like similar books, this one has comments and reminiscences from famous names who worked with the artist, like Bill Graham, Chet Helms, and... Howard Hessman? plus a brief forward by Mickey Hart. Mouse himself provides a brief chatty reminiscence of his life from 1956 to about 1972. A longer (9 page) bio/art review is provided by Walter Medeiros, a San Francisco historian of the rock poster movement, but this too peters out sometime in the '70s. However there's a fair amount of art here, mainly from the '60s (48 posters, plus some early '60s hot rod t-shirts) but with a good bit of '70s album cover work (30 plus Grateful Dead portraits) plus some posters and gallery art from the 1980s and early '90s.

I was disappointed by this book. IMHO the longer (127 page) book "Mouse and Kelley" did a better job by focussing on the entire collaborative period with Kelley from 1966 through 1980. This book presents much of that art but doesn't discuss it. In fact there's only really a little bit about Mouse's life here, almost entirely in the 1960s. Medeiros is only incidentally concerned with the album work, so the reader is left guessing vaguely that Mouse has been an artist in the Sante Fe art scene (he lives in Sonora) since sometime in the early '80s. I think that period deserves discussion. But the book, published in 1992 (before the deaths of Graham and Helms), neither addresses that, nor why Mouse left Marin County, nor why the collaboration with Kelley ended, nor why Monster Studios closed in 1976...

I'd still recommend this book to anyone interested in the artist, but it's a long way from being a definitive catalogue!

This book reflects on Stanley's artwork both in the rock and roll arena as well as work he has performed in other areas. Some of his best unknown works are present here, and if you like Stanley's work, then this book is for you! A definitive catalog of greatness!

This book will surprise anyone who has followed the various intellectual threads in photography starting with Susan Sontag to the present. Not only does Gallop put Susan Sontag's work in it's place, she liberates the idea and practice of photography from many of the simple formulations and replaced it with a deep and resonate literary analysis that will make free thinkers and artists very happy.

Dick Blau's photographs are perfectly sited in this work. I can't think of another picture-text book that so perspiciously intergrates the two languages into a such a confounding whole. But that's life, at least the way we are forced to live it.

The combination of Gallop and Blau's life and work sets a new standard for understanding the grammar of each of their mediums. They suggest how language and images, taken together, can enrich an intelligent and courageous family. Their willingness to believe that their minds, hearts, and art matter, should be an inspiration to any one who might believe that an unexamined family life is not worth living.

An exellent atmosphere and a very good adaptation of the batman to a diferent time. It has a similar quality than Batman Gas light. It could be a good reading for everyone who loves something a little diferent.

Terrific.......2006-06-29

Another fabulous installment in the series. As usual, a person is murdered. There are several suspects. The Inspector is baffled. But his household staff jumps into action and starts investigating. It's the same formula in every book, but it does not get boring. The fantastic characters will keep you entertained, as well as the clever twists and setting. This is not a book about Victorian England, so don't read it thinking you'll derive historical knowledge. It just happens to take place in Victorian England, but the way Brightwell describes the scenes, you can just smell the smells and see the sights in your mind.

Mrs. Goodge finds the killer.......2005-09-09

In this book a man is found shot in the head in his home. When Inspector Witherspoon and his staff begin investigating they find that they have an unlimited number of suspects since the man that was killed was so disliked. There's not much mystery here since its easy to guess who the killer is, but we get another visit with Ms. Brightwell's wonderful characters. Don't be fooled. This is a series that is fully on the side of "cozy". There's not much historical detail in the books even though they are set in Victorian England. But the characters are fun and there is humour and warmth within the pages. I enjoy this series.

Because of my mother, I grew up on Victorian books. The Mrs. Jeffries series, in spite of details and expressions sprinkled in, has never reminded me of the Real Thing. I don't care. I like this series anyway. The tone reminds me of Miss Seeton. You aren't getting Anne Perry here, although Ms. Brightwell does have some good comments about social ills.

These books are dainty tea cakes that make for a nice afternoon or evening's read. Sometimes that's all you want; and if that IS all you want, this would be a good series to buy. The main characters are sympathetic (although Lutie is a little too much) and the murders aren't ridiculously easy to solve. This particular entry has a few decent red herrings (all right, I'll admit it -- the author had me fooled too long for my comfort).

The covers fit the series well except for one thing: why is Mrs. Jeffries always portrayed with completely grey hair when the books state that her hair has some grey in it? (I think her hair is auburn, but this isn't my computer, so I can't check.) I know it's a minor thing, but the artist is otherwise so close that it's a shame to have that mistake. I've suffered the aggravation of buying books with covers that have nothing to do with the interior so I do appreciate the fact that this artist has put some effort into the assignment.

In short, if you like cozies, you should try Mrs. Jeffries out. You'll probably want to get them all. Ann E. Nichols

A sublime Victorian mystery.......1998-08-24

In Victorian England, many individuals are cruel and abusive towards the servants they employ. Inspector Gerald Weatherspoon treats his employees as his best friends. In return, they adore him. The staff has many London contacts so when the inspector is involved in a murder investigation, they help him. Led by his housekeeper Mrs. Jeffries, his staff gathers information and clues, and expeditiously presents them to Gerald in such a way so that he believes the ideas are his. Thanks to his servants, Weatherspoon is one of the leading inspectors.

Mrs. Jeffries and her sprightly crew spring into action once again when Roland Ashbury is murdered while apparently sharing tea with his killer. Weatherspoon and his invisible assistants discreetly learn that the victim was disagreeable person with many enemies including his business partner, daughter, and son-in-law (an MP). When Roland's wife is also shot, the investigative team knows that time is of the essence before someone else is killed.

Thirteen (as in the thirteenth book) is not an unlucky number for fans of this long running and delightful historical cozy series. Emily Brightwell makes sure that her characters remain fresh and interesting while the story line remains as absorbing as previous novels in the series. The historical detail gives a gothic feel to MRS. JEFFRIES TAKES THE CAKE. Even after all these years, this collection remains one of the best English cozy series on the market today.

i was truly enchanted by this cookbook/memoir. while i have not attempted the recipes, her writing is so engaging that you almost feel as if you are in that bustling victorian kitchen that the author grew up in. if only we could be so fortunate.

One of the Best.......2000-11-22

This book is a "must have" for any one who is interested in the meat industry. It provides much of the needed scientific background in one concise volume. I definately recommned it as a book to have on your shelf as a reference. I especially appreciate the fact that it covers some of the basic biochemical principles of muscle growth and postmortem muscle biology as well as some more applied food science concepts. For those who are interested in teaching an undergraduate class, it is probably a little too advanced, but is perfect for a graduate class.
