    Book Description

Featuring unparalleled depth of detail and insightful commentary, this latest addition to a comprehensive survey of Norman Foster, the Pritzker Prize-winning architect focuses on works from the 1980s to the early 1990s.

Norman Foster: Works 2 explores several of the architect's most recognizable buildings, including the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank Headquarters in Hong Kong, which virtually reinvented the office tower; the Sackler Galleries at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, a project that epitomizes the effective intervention of contemporary design within historical buildings; and the Carré d'Art in Nîmes, which unified architecture and urbanism to create a vibrant new cultural core at the heart of the city.

Bringing together contributions from noted commentators alongside essays and observations from Norman Foster and his colleagues this overview reveals the key characteristics of Foster's distinctive design philosophy, showing how a commitment to social and environmental concerns and the exploration of new technologies have been at the heart of his practice from the outset.

    Book Description

This richly illustrated portrait of North Carolina's pottery traditions tells the story of the generations of "turners and burners" whose creations are much admired for their strength and beauty. Perhaps no other state possesses such an active and extensive ceramic heritage, and one that is entirely continuous. This book is an attempt to understand both the past and the present, the now largely vanished world of the folk potter and the continuing achievements of his descendants. It is a tribute that is long overdue.

From the middle of the eighteenth century through the second quarter of the twentieth century, folk potters in North Carolina produced thousands of pieces of earthenware and stoneware—sturdy, simple, indispensable forms like jars and jugs, milk crocks and butter churns, pitchers and dishes, ring jugs and flowerpots. Their wares were familiar and everyday, not innovative or unusual, because they were shaped through generations of use for specific functions. The utilitarian forms were so commonplace and embedded in daily life that few individuals documented the craft. Turners and Burners is the first book to chronicle these pottery traditions, with close attention to distinct regional and temporal patterns and the major families involved. It explores in detail the traditional technologies used, from the foot-powered treadle wheel to the wood-fired groundhog kiln.

Terry Zug became interested in North Carolina pottery in 1969 shortly after moving to Chapel Hill. In 1974 he began documenting the craft and traveled throughout the state recording the reminiscences of potters, former potters, and members of potters' families who recalled the old craft in remarkable detail. He systematically photographed and cataloged old pots, located early shop sites, and carefully recorded the remaining waster dumps of broken shards and decaying equipment. His primary source, however, was the potters themselves. Their tape-recorded interviews provide an insider's view of their world and reveal the powerful underlying logic and autonomy of their craft.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2006-02-23

My wife purchases unique pottery, antiques, etc. on a regular basis. As we live on the border of North Carolina, we often were advised to get this book. I recently gave it to her as a gift, and she loved it. She has an extensive library of reference works, and considers this book "one of the best".

5 out of 5 stars Well-written, in-depth account of folk pottery in N.C........2002-03-30

This book is for anyone who is interested in the history of pottery in North Carolina. The book focuses on pottery as necessary to the rural way of life. Turners and Burners makes the reader appreciate the functional designs of the early potters.
It explores three rich pottery areas in the state - Catawba Valley, Seagrove area and Moravian potters. Many families in these areas are still turning out pottery. The book goes into great detail about Burlon Craig, who is considered the last folk potter in North Carolina.
Sections of the book reviews glazes, kiln construction and functionality of different container designs. Also, it reviews whimsies, face jugs and ring jugs and their place in the pottery tradition of North Carolina.
Turners and Burners gives the reader a great appreciation for the history of pottery in the North Carolina. It will make you want to plan a trip to Seagrove or the Catawba Valley.

5 out of 5 stars A teriffic account of the history & tradition of NC pottery........1998-08-31

Turners and Burners is a must for anyone interested in North Carolina Folk pottery. It presents the history starting with the first potters to settle in the region to the evolution of the trade that lives on today.

Charles Zug does an outstanding job of presenting the culture and the mindset that guided the craft through generations of potters spanning over two centuries.

And the technologies of the craft is given ample attention, through interesting descriptions, drawings, and photographs. A prime example is the discussion of how alkaline glaze kilns differed from the salt kilns in terms of design, firing methods, and durability.

This is a great book, full of useful information to the researcher as well as praticing potters.

Leve Ta Jambe, Mon Poisson Est Mort! features short stories from Julie Doucet's comic book series Dirty Plotte. Andrea Juno sums up Doucet's artwork nicely by saying that it "perfectly complements her stories; her style is both friendly and grotesque, featuring heavily inked, cramped panels. Her comics detail her life as a wandering girl dating, drawing, and drinking.... Her characters are instantly recognizable and drawn with an endearing honesty and compassion." This material is not for those who have fragile images of the feminine.

                    Book Description

Julie Doucet's first book collection, featuring a selection of strips culled from her cult comic book series Dirty Plotte is just as odd as it's title suggests. You'll find it all in here: fatal kisses, early misadventures with tampons, ecstatic lovemaking with giant beer bottles, and a host of other strange and unconventional themes from the unfettered imagination of Ms. Doucet.

Julie Doucet's collection of earlier work is full of filth, perversion and gore. And yet I can't help thinking how much I like it. Her mostly autobiographical tales have a candor about htem that makes you feel like you're visiting the inside of her brain. Best of all, being French-Canadian, especially in these earlier pieces, her English is not so good and so the dialogue has a stilted sound, which I feel adds to the fun of immersing yourself in her odd world.

5 out of 5 stars julie doucet is great.......2000-02-04

hergé, tu peux aller te coucher mais jamais tu rêveras aussi fort que julie doucet.

Ambassador Pezzullo arrived in Managua at the end of June, 1979, shortly before the Somoza regime was toppled by a broad opposition coalition led by the Sandinista National Liberation Front. His book recounts the development of the crisis in Nicaragua, and the evolution of U.S. policy toward Somoza. Unfortunately, Pezzullo spends a great deal of time offering his opinions on Nicaraguan history rather than relating his own involvement. His tenure as ambassador to the victorious revolutionaries and, by extension, Carter's changing policy toward them, receives no attention whatsoever.

Nevertheless, this is a primary source of significant value. It is not a scholarly analysis, and like any participant's account, it should be taken with a grain of salt. Viewed in this way it does provide insight to the problems confronting the Carter administration in Nicaragua, and to the mismanagement of its already limited options.

                                    Book Description

In this detailed and absorbing study, Wilson McLeod challenges the familiar view that Gaelic Scotland and Gaelic Ireland formed a cultural unit during the late middle ages and early modern period. Many commentators have emphasized the strong cultural and political ties that bound the 'sea-divided' Gaels together during this era, when Scottish Gaels supplied crucial military forces to the Gaelic Irish chiefs, and poets and learned men travelled extensively between the two countries. Dr McLeod tests this view of a unified Gaelic 'culture-province' by examination of the surviving sources, especially formal bardic poetry. Although the evidence is patchy and occasionally contradictory, he is able to show that Ireland was culturally dominant. While Scottish Gaeldom attached great significance to the Irish connection, viewing Ireland as the wellspring of historical and cultural prestige, Irish Gaeldom, McLeod argues, perceived Scotland as distant and peripheral.

The purpose of this book is to investigate the reality of the Gaelic culture province between Scotland and Ireland in the Late Middle Ages. This idea has been floating around since the 19th century, but probably received its mostly explicit exposition in the works of Kenneth Jackson in the 1950s.

The book opens with reviewing the idea of the Gaelic culture province, then shifts to the political and cultural backgrounds in Ireland and Scotland from the Early Medieval period to the Early Modern period. While this historical chapter goes beyond the main focus of the book, it is a crucial chapter. It carefully documents how parts of Scotland had to be "re-Gaelicized" after extensive settlement in the Viking Age by Scandinavians and the ensuing ties which lasted until the 14th century. The role of the galloglach in Ireland is also examined. It also builds a case for the Gaelic populations actually inhabiting fairly good land and not peripheral or marginal lands until the 18th and 19th centuries.

The second chapter looks at the intellectual climate in Ireland and Scotland. Sources are marshalled to demonstrate how the Scots often went to schools in Ireland, but not vice-versa. The third chapter looks at the bardic traditions between the two areas. A case is built from examination of the poems for a heavy use of Irish motifs, places, and figures by the Scots bards, but not vice-versa. The cause of this is left unanswered, but may in part be due to the bardic schools that existed in Ireland and not Scotland. Both of these chapters look at the families which supported bards and their fates.

The fourth chapter looks at the break in ties between Gaelic Ireland and Scotland. Partly due to the Reformation,
and partly the re-conquest of Ireland by the English brought the end to contact between the two areas.

The conclusion nicely summarizes the main points the reader is to take with them. Some of the major ones are:

                                    1. The literary works make a strong case for a distinct Irish Gael identity, but not so much of one for a Scots Gaelic identity. The idea of a unified Gaelic identity is only weakly expressed in the literature, and McLeod doubts that it really existed.

                                    2. In terms of the culture, Ireland had a heavy influence on the literary output of Scotland. Irish motifs, characters, and events all figure prominently in Scots Gaelic poetry.

This is a fascinating book, but not one that will be readily accessible to the general reader-it assumes a familiarity with the history and bardic poetry of both Ireland and Scotland.

The Dodo went from being newly discovered to extinction in less than a hundred years. The flightless, odd-looking bird was seen for the first time by Europeans and then annihilated by Europeans in the course of the seventeenth century. And by the end of the nineteenth century, all that remained of what Portuguese explorers called the ¿crazy bird¿ was a patchwork of tall tales, contradictory reports, incompatible illustrations, and fragments of feather and bone. The dodo had become, in short, an unsolvable puzzle, but a puzzle that persisted in art, literature, and scientific speculation.|Best-selling author Clara Pinto-Correia, in following the bird¿s re-creation, shows in this remarkable book how the human intellect and the human imagination prey on sketchy facts and images, how missing pieces and incomplete lines are merged and fused to make a cohesive whole. By considering the incredibly strong hold of this bumbling, ungainly, and ill-fated creature on our collective scientific and literary imagination, Pinto-Correia teaches us not just about the ill-fated bird from the island paradise of Mauritius, but about our own abiding need to make sense of the world around us.|Clara Pinto-Correia is the author of the best-selling The Ovary of Eve. She has taught in the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst; served as a research assistant at Harvard University in the Museum of Comparative Zoology; and is currently Professor and Director of the Masters Degree Program in Developmental Biology at the Universidade Lusofona de Humanidades e Tecnologias, Lisbon, Portugal.

This book pales having arrived just after E. Fuller's recent book "The Dodo from extinction to icon (UK)". From a scholarly vantage it fails utterly.

Firstly the book is quite parochial dwelling at great length on issues very distant from the dodo such as Portuguese navigation and ignoring the fact that the dodo was painted in India completely. The book makes extraordinary claims like "Why do we know so much about what the dodo looked like?" when the text itself makes clear we know very little and makes tremendous claims on behalf of R. Savery, (a relatively poor artist of animals) in the context of his contribution to Western art - why. The best thing about Savery was he did several pictures of the dodo unlike many other artists though Savery's dodos cannot be trusted for accuracy.

Most of the facts in the book such as the numbers of dodo's that arrived in Europe or how much contact R. Savery had with the dodo are either speculative or from doubtful sources. Though references are copious, some important references are not taken up and there is an over reliance on secondary sources. Much of the content it must be said is therefore presumptious.

There are some new translations such as descriptions by Clusius on the dodo's head, but there is little primary material of relevance in a critical style on the dodo itself.

As a celebration of the iconic place of the dodo and the history of the period and the Mascarenes this book has some claims, but you'd be better off reading Fuller. As there are so few good books on the Dodo I think this book is a reasonable start and the author has written it with enthusiasm.

4 out of 5 stars Slender volume but most interesting read.......2003-05-04

At a young age, the author Clara Pinto-Correia heard about the long extinct dodo and became fascinated by the bird's fate. The end result is a well-researched and well-written text that takes the reader from the shores of Europe to a small chain of islands where the dodo and it's genetic cousins made their homes.

Sadly, the dodo and it's genetic cousins were doomed to extinction with the arrival of Europeans (starting with the Portuguese). The plump, flightless animals were slow breeders with a single offspring per mating season and no natural enemies. Add ravenous creatures (Homo sapiens included) into their safe mircosphere and diaster was assured.

Pinto-Correia traces the few captive dodos in Euorpe and the fates of their remains. Now, the only things the modern world has of the dodo are a scattering of bones, some paintings and sketches and the cultural understanding that to be a dodo is to be doomed.

A must read for the natural history reader or devotee.

4 out of 5 stars extinct in less than a century!.......2003-04-26

Subtitle of this book is "The Sad, Strange Tale of the Dodo" and so it is. Pinto-Correia mixes a bit of humor with a pleasant writing style, lots of relevant history and geography, and a sad shake of her head about how rapacious humans are.

It was a marvelously heady period in Europe's awakening after intellectual dark days and Pinto-Correia gives the reader a sense of that emergence. On one level the dodo is a symbol of an eden found and lost on three small islands along the way to spices and riches. In their rush to gather spices, riches and glory men plundered these islands and left them poorer - the islands' inhabitants were decimated and became fearful, the men did not realize what a treasure they had found.

The reader can assign other levels to the story as Pinto-Correia unfolds it. Science came into its own during these centuries, and the dodo's discovery and extinction is a grand example of the days when alchemy gave way to chemistry and astrology became astronomy. Natural history developed as well, with taxonomy seemingly in the forefront. The dodo was classified and plunged into first one species then another, had little to prove that it even existed, finally was declared extinct - all in less than 100 years.

Pinto-Correia packs information about the hapless bird and the European humans of the era into this book. The reader learns painlessly while realizing this is a learning experience.

For this reader Return of the Crazy Bird is a grand vacation read, easy to pick up and put down without losing the thread of the story.
