Book Description

Although today Florida is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, many of the architectural landmarks that reflect its colorful and diverse history remain unknown. An adventuresome group of pioneers were drawn to the uncharted and exotic landscape of late
nineteenth-century Florida, creating buildings of extraordinary imagination and beauty. Since then Florida has experienced a century of remarkable architecture, from the ornate Italian villa Vizcaya to the Venetian Pool of Coral Gables to the Art Deco hotels of South Beach to the the Ringling Museum house, called Cad'Zan.

This book is the first to capture the full range of styles, from the ornate, opulent, and spectacular, to the charming, country "Old Florida," which is now becoming so popular. Residents and tourists alike will appreciate both the renowned sites and a private glimpse of such amazing attractions as the orange-grove cottage where Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings wrote The Yearling and Thomas Edison's winter home, which has a fascinating laboratory.

5 out of 5 stars This book represents the REAL Florida.......2007-05-03

Forget theme park world that most people associate with Florida today, OLD FLORIDA chronicles the vintage, the off beat and the unusual places that recall a time not too long ago before the Sunshine state was over run by tourism.

We used to spend some time in Florida visiting a great aunt in Dunedin and this book is a reminder of what we missed along the way--and things I'd like to return to see (if the kids will let us bypass Orlando). Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings' farmhouse is definitely on the list as are some of the other places chronicled in this book.

The photographers, Steve Gross and Susan Daley, who also produced and photographed OLD HOUSES, SANTA FE: HOUSES & GARDENS, and CATSKILLS COUNTRY STYLE, as well as their recent release, CREOLE HOUSES, appreciate and photograph these unusual places that should be both seen and preserved. Their work provides an armchair glimpse into another time--each place is preserved and kept in its own unique manner and fortunately brought to life, and held for posterity, in the evocative vision of these photographers. We all need to see the built environment a bit more as they do and appreciate what we still have from the past before it is beseiged by homogenous strip malls and McMansions. Gross and Daley help inspire and lead the way.

5 out of 5 stars A Surprising Treat!.......2006-05-19

Who knew? Browsing the bookstore shelves for a present for a dear friend recently retired to the Sunshine State I came upon this fine book, OLD FLORIDA. This book is a gem! The excellent photographs show all the great gardens and historic houses like the ones in St Agustine we love to visit and many we plan to. I will be ordering several more to give as gifts.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful tour of OLD FLORIDA's lost treasures.......2006-04-24

I love this book! It is a beautiful tour of OLD FLORIDA"S lost treasures of architecture and all the facinating houses and gardens that most tourists never go to. In this age of over development and franchise attractions this beautifully photographed book showed us many wonderous places that make Florida unique. When I found this book I was amazed and looked up the authors, Sue Daley and Steve Gross. It turns out that they have done several books of this sort. They also did a book on Sante Fe and another one on the Catskills and both are as beautiful and interesting as OLD FLORIDA. They are both photographers who seem to be able to find both historic and contemporary houses to photograph that one would love to visit. This is what makes their books so good, their sophisticated eye for showing a place through it's houses and people who created them and we can't wait to see where their books will take us next.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2004-06-30

Once upon a time, Rizzoli was a publisher of beautiful and definitive books. How the mighty have fallen. "Old Florida" is sadly typical of Rizzoli's current product: hit-or-miss photography accompanied by text barely worthy of a tourist brochure. Recommended only if you need some eye-candy to glance at while clicking between A&E and the TravelChannel.
If you really want to learn about Florida history and architecture, consider these books instead: "Speedway to Sunshine: The Story of the Florida East Coast Railway" and "Mizner's Florida: American Resort Architecture."

5 out of 5 stars Read the Title.......2002-12-12

The two reviewers who say "not cutting edge", "filled with junk mail I get everyday", "no creative ideas" obviously miss the point. Designing Direct Mail that Sells is exactly about why the junk mail you get everyday brings in billions of dollars in sales every year and how to do that kind of direct mail. It is about the mail hundreds of companies and publishers do, test in the market, and pay designers quite handsomely for. It is not about "cutting edge" design that wins design awards or the newest trends. What it is about, very simply, is understanding how to create everyday direct mail that actually gets people to respond and buy something. You can stick up your nose at it, but you can't just dismiss it.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book.......2002-08-10

This has got to be the worst "graphic design" book I have ever seen. It showcases designers and their various works, and you have to wonder, did they even go to art school? I seriously thought it was a joke that the author thought their work was so "cutting edge." I guarantee no designer would want this book. In fact, I would do anything to get my money back, but I guess that's what happens when you buy books online.

To those who praise this book, you must be a suit trying to design yourself. TRUST ME - HIRE A DESIGNER, cause if you think the designs in this book look good, then you need help or better taste.

Just because it's direct mail doesn't mean it has to look BAD!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Designing Direct Mail That Sells - This Book Really Sells.......1999-12-25

I've been involved in Direct Response Mail for many years. Sure wish I had this when I started. Would have saved me headaches, frustration and money.

Now that I've learned from hard knocks, I find this book just as useful, as a reminder, as a fine tuner and as a classic illustration of right and wrong, what to do and what to avoid.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and Useful Information.......1999-12-15

"Designing Direct Mail That Sells" offers practical advice, tips for success, plenty of definitions, plus a great collection of samples and sources for inspiration. Written by a direct mail specialist with many years in the business, this book is for people actually working in the trenches.

Blum explains the "whys" and "hows" behind bursts and stickers; how to test a direct mail piece; creating an effective package, envelope, response card and brochure; and designing self-mailers and 3-D or oversized pieces. She also defines such direct mail lingo as "lift letters," "freemiums," etc.

Even more edifying are the book's sidebars, which provide advice from direct mail specialists, test and design tips, formatting advice and other valuable tricks.

1 out of 5 stars Definitely NOT the book I have been waiting for!.......1999-10-29

If you have ever received junk mail you don't need this book. This particular books profiles typical forms of junk mail every person receives daily at home and at work. There is absoultely no creative ideas or techniques represented in the pages, rather obvious observations make up each chapter (i.e. "Sex sells"). I have found that keeping all of the direct mail peices I receive and noting what caught my attention is cheaper, less time consuming, and more effective than this book.

4 out of 5 stars Carries on the family biographical tradition.......1998-07-15

This book carries on the family tradition of sons writing about fathers. The author's grandfather, the famous Prime Minister, had much earlier written a biography of his father, also named Randolph, which was generally poorly reviewed at the time and essentially constituted a glorification of the subject. The current work, which purports to be objective, reveals a startingly adventurous life, lived always within the shadow of the famous father. I think that objectivity is achieved (the author's father could be difficult, to way the least but was also generous to a fault and loyal regardless of consequences). The reader will be surprised at the many intellectual and other accomplishments of the subject of this biohgraphy. Toward the end of his life, Randolph was commissioned to write the Great Biography (about his famous father), and the period when he completed the first two volumes of this undertaking (Martin Gilbert finished the task) is particularly interesting.! ! The author's earliest recollections come into play in the second half of the book, which include a large number of historically significant individuals (of course, his famous grandfather, but many other British political luminaries as well). Churchill buffs will very much enjoy this book.

This collection of family e-mail correspondence reveals the fears and tribulations of a mother and father relocated to a nation and region far from the suburban culture from which they had come. The observations encompass helicopter trips over an Asian mountain range, opera, ballet, the International Ladies Society in the capital city of Almaty, and an unforgettable six-day trip on the historic Silk Road of Central Asia to the ancient homeland of Tamerlane in Samarkand and Bukhara in central Uzbekistan. These letters reveal a couple who became experts on the integration of an emerging, isolated nation into a new international business community.

What a charming little book! This couple took time out of retirement to jump out of their comfortable suburban lives and head to Kazakhstan to offer volunteer assistance to budding small businesses. The tales of their adventures are touching, funny, and heartwarming. It's a sort of study abroad for the golden years model - more seniors should try it! A wonderful read and an inspiring story!

We're adopting a baby from Kaz and wanted some background on the country. Not a lot of books out there, as you well know! This is a series of e-mails from a retired couple who spent 3 months in the early 90's in Almaty, the husband helping Kaz companies with business plans. It's kind of cool to hear about their trips to the green market and trips to Uzbekistan, but the stuff their relatives write back to them is worthless for Kaz learning purposes. I skipped over a lot. Get it used or from a library if you want to try it or skip all together...

                  Book Description

Between Us is on the shortlist of essentials to take along the trails of lifeÂ's journey. It is both an exhilarating and profound work, based on a remarkable series of conversations between a wise and loving father and an inquisitive and witty son. Together they speak to each of us as individuals relating to one another—parent and child, teacher and student, peers learning mutually. Their discussions embody a deep humanity and understanding.

In searching out ways of leading a happier life, Between Us helps each of us to learn and grow. It heartens as it teaches, reaffirming how through a commitment to self-awareness and applying that knowledge, a person can clearly improve his or her life. Its emphasis on the basics—work, love, marriage, family and the like—provides an approach for living richly and fully here and now. This unique dialogue shows and tells how loving relationships sustain us and make for a more meaningful life. Its lessons are invaluable.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Guide To Happiness.......2006-04-12

I highly recommend "Between Us" . Here are conversations between father and son, both psychiatrists, about love, sex, family, work, and more. Their insights will help the reader lead a happier, richer, and more fulfilling life.

5 out of 5 stars Poetic Meditation on the Life Cycle.......2006-04-07

Between Us : A Father and Son Speak, is an elegant and poetic meditation on the many nuances of the Life Cycle and the oft-times complex father-son dynamic. This book provides invaluable insight, some humor and a limitless supply of pearls of wisdom that resonate deeply within each chapter. This is the perfect book for any father or son who desire to better understand and strengthen this primary --yet often ignored-- relationship.
I wish my father were still alive so that I could share this wonderful book with him. This book is the perfect father's day gift!

5 out of 5 stars Immensely valuable in renewing several of the relationships in my own relationships........2006-02-26

Naturally, when you pick up a book about someone else's father, you are a little skeptical about its value to your life. That is why I was so enthused by the lessons learned from this easily absorbed book. It's served to help renew several of the important relationships in my life and I've referred it on to others.

                  Book Description

The second day's fighting at Gettysburg—the assault of the Army of Northern Virginia against the Army of the Potomac on 2 July 1863—was probably the critical engagement of that decisive battle and, therefore, among the most significant actions of the Civil War.

Harry Pfanz, a former historian at Gettysburg National Military Park, has written a definitive account of the second day's brutal combat. He begins by introducing the men and units that were to do battle, analyzing the strategic intentions of Lee and Meade as commanders of the opposing armies, and describing the concentration of forces in the area around Gettysburg. He then examines the development of tactical plans and the deployment of troops for the approaching battle. But the emphasis is on the fighting itself. Pfanz provides a thorough account of the Confederates' smashing assaults—at Devil's Den and Litle Round Top, through the Wheatfield and the Peach Orchard, and against the Union center at Cemetery Ridge. He also details the Union defense that eventually succeeded in beating back these assaults, depriving Lee's gallant army of victory.

Pfanz analyzes decisions and events that have sparked debate for more than a century. In particular he discusses factors underlying the Meade-Sickles controversy and the questions about Longstreet's delay in attacking the Union left. The narrative is also enhanced by thirteen superb maps, more than eighty illustrations, brief portraits of the leading commanders, and observations on artillery, weapons, and tactics that will be of help even to knowledgeable readers.

Gettysburg—The Second Day is certain to become a Civil War classic. What makes the work so authoritative is Pfanz' mastery of the Gettysburg literature and his unparalleled knowledge of the ground on which the fighting occurred. His sources include the Official Records, regimental histories and personal reminiscences from soldiers North and South, personal papers and diaries, newspaper files, and last—but assuredly not least—the Gettysburg battlefield. Pfanz's career in the National Park Service included a ten-year assignment as a park historian at Gettysburg. Without doubt, he knows the terrain of the battle as well as he knows the battle itself.

Considering the author was a former historian at the battlefield, this book offers the most in-depth account of what occurred before, during, and after the three-day battle at Gettysburg. A must-read for anyone interested in the Civil War, but take note that it is very detailed, listing countless names and locations.

Harry W. Pfanz attention to detail is what I love the most about this incredible research. Harry spent 10 year assign as a park historian at Gettysburg and he spent it well. Harry learn and walked over every inch of the terrain. Harry's knowledge of the battle is unsurpassed. Harry knows more about this battle then Lee or Meade ever learned. Harry I salute you and thank you for the detail and amazing research you have preformed for our country's history. AWESOME AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
*** WARNING this book is not for someone who is looking for the "Cliff Notes" for their history class.

Harry W. Pfanz has written down the most information about the Gettsburg battle in the Civil War then anyother author. The facts just surprise you. I knew alot about Gettsburg before this book but I learned so much more by reading this. I want the world to know that Gettsburg was worse then what people believe it was.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Account of Gettysburg's Second Day.......2005-04-14

I have heard that Harry Pfanz has probably forgotten more about Gettysburg than many will ever learn about the battle. In my humble opinion, after reading Gettysburg The Second Day, there is much truth to that statement.

Pfanz' narrative is full of details about Little Round Top, Devil's Den, the Stony Hill, the Wheatfield, Rose Farm and Woods, and other important landmarks during the July 2 conflict. He weaves terrain features in with descriptions of several units in the conflicts.

While some people criticize Pfanz for too much battle narrative and little analysis (saves it for the last chapter), I personally enjoyed the book. If you are the kind of reader who enjoys reading battle narratives and descriptions of the participants, then this is the book for you.

The main gripe I have with the book concerns the maps. While excellent (goes down to the regimental level, clear terrain features, and has a unique description of the action portrayed in the map), there are not enough. Unfortunately, this is an all too common weakness in many Civil War titles. While Pfanz' narrative is full of interesting details, not having enough maps is distracting when trying to comprehend the actions of several units during the engagements. While there are 13 maps in the book, there easily could have been at least 20 total to provide more clarity to the action.

Complaint aside, I recommend this book as the definitive title on the second day at Gettysburg. I plan to refer to this book often during my next trip to Gettysburg. Read and enjoy! Recommended.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-01-06

Pfanz is the champion of Day 2 at Gettysburg. Although his First Day treatment was very good, he excels with the focus on the Day 2 action.

The action is very detailed and certainly not for a newbie. Definitely read a good one volume account of the entire battle first (maybe even read it twice).

Many will claim that the meat and the potatoes of the battle of GB is on the second day, particularly in the area of The Peach Orchard, Wheatfield, and Little Round Top. Longstreet called it "the best three hours of fighting" and I tend to agree.

Pfanz does an excellent job of setting up the different regimental, brigade, divison, and corps leaders who were in charge of these certain subsections of the fight, along with providing some grunt reports to present a complete picture. Of course the book is meticulously footnoted and you will not doubt his knowledge on the subject.

Movements and phases of battle tend to overlap. The Wheatfield is probably one of the most complex actiions to understand because of the involvement of 2 different Confederate divisions and at least 3 different Union corps, not to mention the ebb and flow of battle. Pfanz handles this action superbly.

Little Round Top, although not as complex a movement, has potential to become magnified in importance and to actual events. However, Pfanz relies of meticulous research and tempers any far flung notions, but simply presents the events as they happen. Well done.

Pfanz is not a big Sickle's fan. Most would agree with him. I'd like to have seen a more neutral stance or at least present the counter argument, but that's okay. When it comes to Sickles, you can write a book alone about his decision to move his corps forward.

There are several maps. The complex action might require a more thorough set if you really want to break down the details. I'd suggest getting a copy of Imhoff's Day Two A Study in Maps. It's an excellent source of about 50 beautiful maps covering all the Day 2 action. Reading Pfanz and comparing against Imhoff's maps is the perfect one two punch you'll ever come across.

Simiply put, if you are student of the battle of gettysburb, your bookshelf is extremely incomplete without a copy of The Second Day, and his other book on the Culp's Hill and Cemetary Hill part of the field. Skip his First Day book and go with Martin there who has written the definitive account.

5 out of 5 stars Studies of the Second Day at Gettysburg.......2004-07-21

This book is the second of a three-volume collection of essays edited and introduced by Gary Gallagher that explore leadership and other critical issues during each of the three days of the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1-3, 1863. On the first day of the Battle, elements of the Union and Confederate armies collided to the North and West of Gettysburg with the result that the Union Army was pushed back to a strong position on Cemetery Hill and Cemetery Ridge to the South and East of the town. The five essays in this volume explore important and controversial actions in the following second day of the Battle.

The first essay in the volume is by Professor Gallagher himself, "If the Enemy is There, we must attack him." This essay explores an underlying issue of the entire battle -- Confederate commander Robert E. Lee's decision to assume the offensive on July 2 and to attack the powerful Union position. General Lee's decision was opposed at the time and for many years thereafter by General James Longstree, Lee's primary subordinate. Longstreet favored a movement around the right of the Union army. Other options that Lee might have considered include assuming a defensive posture and awaiting a Union attack. Professor Gallagher explores each of these options and comes to a measured assessment of Lee's decision.

The second essay "The Peach Orchard Revisited: Daniel E. Sickles and the Third Corps on July 2, 1863" is by William Robertson, Professor at the Combat Studies Institute, U.S. Army. Professor Robertson examines the decision of Union General Dan Sickles, commander of the Third Corps of the Army, to move his Corps from the position that Union Commander George Meade assigned to it on Cemetery Ridge to a salient about 3/4 mile in front of the Union line. Controversy has raged over the years over the wisdom and effect of Sickles's unauthorized move on the result of the Battle. Professor Robertson makes an excellent attempt to examine this issue afresh. He concludes, probably contrary to the opinion of most students of the Battle, that Sickle's move had a great deal to commend it, even though Professor Robertson is highly critical of Sickles's failure to coordinate his action with Meade.

The third essay, "If Longstreet Says so it is most likely not true" by Robert Krick, a biographer of Stonewall Jackson, is polemical in character. It is highly critical of the role Longstreet played in the events of Gettysburg, particularly on the second day. Most of this essay is a discussion of various statements of other Southern leaders critical of Longstreet and a criticism of Longstreet's actions at places other than Gettysburg. A more careful examination of Longstreet's actions during the second day of the Battle itself would have been welcome.

The fourth essay, " A Step All-Important and Essential to Victory": Henry W. Slocum and the Twelfth Corps on July 1-2, 1863" is by A. Wilson Greene, executive director of the Association for the Preservation of Civil War Sites. It discusses and assesses the leadership of the Commander of the Union Twelfth Corps, General Slocum, during his tardy march to the Battlefield on July 1 and during the defense of Culp's Hill on the extreme Union right on July 2. Culp's Hill remains a relatively little-known part of the Battle, but it was the scene of furious fighting. The climax of the action on Culp's Hill was General "Pap" Greene's holding of the position with only a single brigade against a force that outnumbered him 3-1 during the evening of July 2. Wilson Greene's essay argues that this aspect of the Battle was, indeed, not of the greatest significance to the ultimate result. He is also critical of Slocum's performance throughout the Battle.

The final essay in this collection is by Scott Hartwig, a ranger and historian with the National Park Service at Gettysburg, titled "No troops had done better": John Caldwell's Division in the Wheatfield, July 2, 1863". This essay is unique in the collection in that it examines command at the Division rather than the Corps or Army level. It focuses on the bloody fighting in the Wheatfield which resulted from the position assumed by General Sickles (essay 2). Caldwell's Division was sent to reinforce the position and fought heroically, if ultimately unsuccessfully to hold the Wheatfield. This essay does an excellent job in exploring command under combat conditions featuring lack of knowledge of the position, lack of coordination, and difficulties of communication among the troops. I recently attended an anniversary battle walk at Gettysburg which covered the fighting in the Wheatfield, and Caldwell's role, in great detail. I learned a great deal by following-up with Hartwig's essay.

This book presupposes a basic familiarity with the Battle of Gettysburg and with the chief areas of controversy resulting from this great Battle. These essays are thoughtful and provocative and will enhance the student's understanding.

3 out of 5 stars Narrow Focus and Krick Uses Canister on Longstreet.......2003-01-22

This book is the third in a series of essays on the Gettysburg battle and as much as I thoroughly enjoyed the First day and the Third, this book is my least favorite. Although, Gallagher as usual writes a very fair and well researched essay on REL and his reasoning and actions at Gettysburg, the remaining three authors are a little too narrow in scope on their topic or in the case of Krick to eager to harpoon the great white whale. Gallagher has the best essay as he explains Lee's position, options and reasoning in a very logical format. He also underlines well Lee's interactions with his generals.

It was very disappointing that Krick who is a tremendously well researched writer on Jackson and who adores him writes the critical essay on Longstreet who Krick has a long history of open disgust. Krick starts off his essay with a collection of everything ugly that was ever said about Longstreet to incredulous proportions that he even includes the relatively few comments made by Longstreet's trusted subordinates. Often quoting McLaws who called Longstreet a "great big humbug", in contrast it was noted in Jeffery Wertz's more recent book that recently discovered documentation between Longstreet and McLaws indicated that Lee wanted Longstreet to either ride McLaws hard to keep him from being lethargic or lose him, which may explain the strains in their relationship. It's no secret that Longstreet was not motivated for a frontal assault and he is taken to task for trying to conceal moving 20,000 men from an open field although I would agree he could have done it more effectively. Krick roasts Longstreet every which way, he criticizes him for not embracing Lee's attack plan and arguing but then beats him up for refusing Hood's last minute desire to flank the round tops. By this time, Longstreet played Lee too long for the same request thus he ordered the attack a fact Longstreet never hid even in his writings; however, poorly written. Krick in effect makes Longstreet look like such a dolt that it reflects negatively on Lee, as if he was incapable of either command or command changes. Looking at the number of officers that Lee moved out after the Seven days and at Antietam, Lee could and did reassign anyone that displeased him. The second day was the heaviest fighting on the field and in spite of the Union position; the First Corp almost breaks through. This should have been the best and most critical essay in the book and I think more even handed in the analysis.

The remaining two essays maintain a more narrow scope. Greene expertly explains the bewildering day of Slocum and the 12th Corp. Slocum inexplicitly does not march to the sound of the guns embracing orders that are out of date and when he pulls into Culps Hill to become the senior commander he seems to lose control of his corps not even knowing the whereabouts of his divisions. Fortunately for the Union, no great attack occurred while 2/3's to the division marched away from their positions to assist the Union Center and left flank and while Geary inexplicitly marched from Culps Hill away from the battle essentially getting lost. Only Greene's division hang's on beating Johnson's dramatic attack in which he out numbered Greene 3 to 1. Slocum's units return at the end of the day. The one piece that would have added an interesting aspect to the essay was how the Confederates just missed out on having over whelming numbers in the attack phase to the point of success. Part of it is explained in that the Stonewall Brigade had to watch a threat from the east but a little more detail would have been wonderful. It sounds that this was the great possibility for a breakthrough while the maligned Longstreet's attack took much of the focus of the Union's attention away.

The last essay by Hartwig is a detailed study of General Caldwell's division filling the breach at the Wheatfield stemming the attack by the First Corp led by Kershaw, Anderson and Semmes. Plugging the hole expertly and timely without any leadership from either Corp commanders on the field. He borrows commands to fill holes in his line and he stymies the Confederate attack until Barksdale and Wofford's brigade ruptures Sickles line collapsing Caldwell's exposed right flank. In spite of high casualties and expert service, Caldwell is castigated by his superiors and eventually loses his command. He's never properly appreciated and perhaps is made inappropriately culpable by his inept Corp commander whose ruthless critique may have been the cover for his own limited performance.

Another essay was needed, what was A. P. Hill doing?

                  5 out of 5 stars Leadership: Decisions....decisions..........2002-08-06

Gary Gallagher has brought together the 2nd Day at Gettysburg in a format similar to his 1st Day book in regards to Union and Confederate leadership. This 2nd Day book offers insight to popular questions and accusations made towards officers involved in various battles during the second day of events. As with other publications by Gallagher, Gallagher teams up with other noted historians in a series of chapters that offer their viewpoints to popular battles during the 2nd Day. Gary Gallagher takes on the tough task of questions that arise to Leeýs decisions to attack in the early morning of July 2nd, 1863 while William Glenn Robertson tries to answer questions in regards to Daniel Sickleýs 3rd Corps movements.

Robertson defines Sickleýs with great biography to paint a picture of a man whose military leadership is often backed by political tension and propaganda. Robertson does a fine job in looking at Sickleýs reasons for moving the 3rd Corps and also Meadeýs reaction to such positioning. As the book continues Robert Krick looks at General James Longstreet and tries to answer questions as to why this general was slow to react to Leeýs orders on the 2nd how others around the man were upset with his sluggish approach to handling the 2nd day affairs. Krick points out key elements to Longstreetýs decision making as it was typical of the commander to be defensive and stubborn throughout the Civil War. It was interesting to read Krickýs views on Longstreetýs career and how Longstreet handled southern verbal attacks made against him for years after the war.

Wilson Greene brought on his chapter in regards to Howard Slocumýs defense of Culpýs Hill. Greene initially captured the flavor of Slocum though soon ran into a lengthy discussion of Culpýs Hill deployment and battle which did not seem to compliment this chapterýs basis of discussion. I felt it painted a good picture of the events though didnýt associate with enough impact to Slocum. Slocum I felt became a less-than central figure in the discussion which seemed to lessen the importance of titling the chapter ýHenry J. Slocum and the Twelfth Corps on July 1-2, 1863.ý I was disappointed with this chapter.

Scott Hartwig brought on a very intriguing and worthwhile chapter in regards to the Wheatfield which centered on General Caldwell and his command. This was a very refreshing chapter after being bored with Greenýs Slocum chapter. Hartwig wanted to show that Sickleýs blunder had brought about chaos and confusion for other commanders such as Caldwell. Over years Caldwell has taken much blame for his rigid task at hand at the Wheatfield conflict in the 2nd. Hartwig defines the movments and executions carefully with maps and thorough research making this chapter probably the best written of all. It reads well and also shows that Caldwell had a huge undertaking thrust upon him that afternoon on the 2nd and respectively handled a burdensome task.

This book is a great read for those looking to deepen their Gettysburg research. For the novice I would not recommend this book as it does not bring forth the entire 2nd Day battle, it only answers questions popular to 2nd Day events. For the student looking for further insight, I highly recommend this book. Itýs a must read!!

4 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, thorough, but arid........1999-02-12

An excellent, thoughtful work for the serious student or researcher. Gallegher seems to have made something of a cottage industry of these edited collections of late, but he does it well. Probably not of much use, however, unless one has a good overall view of the second day, for which I'd recommend Pfanz's work.

Modern Mongolia: Reclaiming Genghis Khan is a lovely book, in four parts, with lots of color pictures. The first part called, 'My Mongolia', tells about Mongolia, the people, places and their history up to the 1900s. The second part, titled 'The Twentieth Century: From Domination to Democracy', tells the story of Mongolia under the China and, later, Russia's control. The third chapter is called 'Deel, Ger and Altar: Continuity and Charge in Mongolian Material Culture' which shows us the changes in what the people used, lived in and wore (sometimes based on what they had and sometimes based on what they were ALLOWED to have). The last part is called 'Genghis Khan, Father of Mongolian Democracy' and shows that, while Mongolians did not have Democracy under Khan, they did have many democratic principles even before Genghis Khan showed up. Under the Khan many of this ideas (rule by law, equality of citizens, participatory government and human rights) were made more powerful by the fact that he united them and made them independent from outside powers. Genghis Khan is a Founding Father ANY nation could be proud of. AT least he had all his teeth and didn't wear a white wig!
The book itself was written by four authors who used a mixture of fact and first person accounts to make a book that you can tell they all enjoyed making. The only thing missing is a copy of the Mongolian constitution. But I did like the beginning of the preamble which they showed in the book:

"We the people of Mongolia...." Always a good start!
