Book Description

Every edition of the "Hove International Blue Book" evolves into something different from the last. The 14th edition is certainly no exception.

An "A to Z" of collectible cameras with descriptions, price guides and rarity values, this new edition has a sizeable increase in pages to accommodate many new entries and pictures.

This latest edition has been edited again by John Wade, well-known for his books and articles on collectible cameras. In the last edition, John added new cameras from the post-1945 period. For this edition, he delves back further and introduces many more with never-seen-before pictures on cameras from the first half of the 20th century.

The camera directory is larger, as is the general information section of the book. Here, readers will find much more useful data for collectors, including a brand new section about collecting on the internet, complete with a list of useful web sites for collectors.

Also, for the first time, there is a section on the growing trend in cine camera collecting, with its own mini-directory, as well as such useful data as, market trends, camera restoration, ways to date collectable cameras, importance of landmark cameras, details of museums and clubs for the collector.

In short, the "Hove International Blue Book" is now a lot more than just a camera director. It has become, in addition to that directory, an indispensable handbook for the collector.

4 out of 5 stars slightly overrated.......2006-05-22

The Millenium Edition of the famous Hove International Blue Book is an excellent source of information for collectors and users of old photographic equipment, no doubt about that.
My critique of it concerns the abundance of typographical errors, factual mistakes and, seen in the light of this era of global interest, the difference in valuations for Europe, the UK and the USA.
The only justification for the latter seems to be found in the caption "How and where to collect", as prices differ up to 50% between the areas!

3 out of 5 stars Could have been much, much better . . ........2003-10-23

This well-meant companion volume to the author's _Two Fisted Science_ is, unfortunately, not nearly as successful as graphic fiction. This time, five women artists tell the stories of five women scientists. While trying to focus on lesser-known people, Ottaviani finally broke down and included a fore-and-aft pair of shorts on Marie Curie. If you've read Watson's _The Double Helix,_ you may already have heard of Rosalind Franklin, who came very close to discovering the essential shape of DNA before Crick and Watson -- had she only not moved in the wrong direction on a couple of minor points (and possessed a less abrasive personality). Barbara McClintock picked up a Nobel for her work on the corn genome, you'd really never know what her field was from the badly written story (though the art is okay). Biruté Galdikas has become the world's leading authority on orangutans (yes, she's still out there in the jungles of Borneo) and you'll learn a lot about them -- and her -- from Anne Timmons's nicely done piece. But the story of mathematician Lise Meitner is also pretty indistinct. The best of the collection, actually, is Carl Speed McNeil's very well told and drawn story of the scientific side of Hedy Lamarr, of all people. Hedy (not Heddy) actually held some wartime patents in electronics (which became a crucial part of cell phone technology), but still was treated like a bimbo both by her first husband and by Louis B. Mayer after she escaped to the U.S. This book could have been much, much better.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly solid facts, comic book format.......2000-09-01

A single writer partnered with 12 different artists in stories about 6 different women scientists. Some stories obviously succeed better than others.

For young people who like graphic novels and have some interest in science, I recommend it highly. But as a women's history buff and a comic book fan I find it a little disappointing. The comic format is ideal for high drama stories but is not always used at it's full potential here.

For example, in the life of Barbara McClintock, two pages cover the time period from 1951 to 1983. They show her lecturing to men in business suits with their hands over their ears. The crowd thins out in the 60's and then begins to swell with more casually dressed people, both male and female, who don't have their hands over their ears. Then she gets the Nobel prize. The faces in the crowds are consistently expressionless. I think this misses the real drama of McClintock's life. She was so brilliant that her theory was not understood when she first presented it. She chose to continue her research even when it was not reaching a receptive audience and because she documented it for decades, when other researchers later repeated her experiments and discovered her documentation, she received the recognition she deserved.

This was seldom the case with earlier women scientists, for example, Rosalind Franklin. Franklin's fascinating story, unfortunately, is difficult to follow through time and four different artists' styles.

And, in an interesting bit of reverse sexism, Birute Galdikas' story is told without once mentioning (or picturing) her first husband who worked beside her daily for 20 years. OK, so her whole life story had to be told in only 21 pages, but the ghosts of all the women scientists whose husbands' got credit for all their work recognize a kindred spirit when they see one.

In a format that's known for pounding points home, the drama here is often implied and understated. Perhaps less would be missed if the format was full color instead of black and white. Better yet, read some biographies of these women and discuss with your children how you would tell their stories to preserve the real drama.

This is a good introduction to some fascinating women for those who like the graphic novel format. Use it as a starting point.

    5 out of 5 stars Enlightening Reading.......1999-12-02

Ottaviani's DIGNIFYING SCIENCE is a well illustrated and well written work. It does what a lot of good nonfiction has done recently - it focuses on those often forgotten people and events that were important and influential on the better known ideas and forces that shape our world today. In this instance, Ottaviani has centered his attention on women scientists, inventors and researchers who discovered, researched, and supported major scientific achievements in the last century. He and the women artists who illustrate the book do a superb job of introducing us to the contributions of these people who we never knew or knew little, but to whom we owe a collective, and enormous, debt.

        Book Description

To 19th-century writers the dynamic periodical press seemed both an influential medium and a means to pay the bills. A suprising number of women, despite limited education, parental opposition and the competitive nature of this developing profession sought to earn a living through journalism. Others saw the press as a valuable mechanism for educating the masses or a powerful channel for influencing public opinion. How did these women fare in Grub Street? Could they harness the power of the press? Who were the "lady journalists"? The women featured in this book range from Mary Russell Mitford to Flora Shaw to Margaret Gatty. Drawing on varied contemporary sources--memoirs, letters, magazines, journals, newspapers, and contemporary fiction about journalism--and her own database covering hundreds of women, Barbara Onslow assesses their contributions to journalism and how it affected the careers of writers as diverse as George Eliot, Elizabeth Gaskell, Anna Maria Hall, and Mary Braddon and Charlotte Yonge.

Charlotte Hobson arrived in the Russian city of Voronezh just in time to witness the Soviet Union careening toward its last day of existence. There she found a city exploding from 70 years of pent-up desire. In Hostel No. 4, her fellow students plunged into a sexual revolution ribald even by American standards. With sudden shortages and hyperinflation, Hobson and her mates lived on cheap vodka, the imperative to escape the tedium of the Soviet era, and the fever of a transition from an oppressive government to one full of risks, decadence, and the unknown. In this tender and poignant memoir, Hobson immerses herself in the beautiful, impenetrable, and dark lexicon of the Russians--the old superstitions, the brutal military service, the vibrant and tempestuous loves nurtured by minus-20-degree temperatures--and evokes a bittersweet passage full of excitement, mayhem, and despair. --Lesley Reed

            Book Description

In September 1991, the Soviet Union is collapsing and people conquer uncertainty, hunger, and negative-twenty degree temperatures by drinking too much vodka and reveling in their new-found sexual freedom. Charlotte Hobson is our irresistible guide to this tumultuous time. We meet Yakov, who blows half-a-million rubles on a taxi to see a girl in Minsk; Lola, who sleeps with her peers for a share of their dinner; Viktor, who struggles to forget his brutal memories of military service; and Mitya, Hobson's wild and optimistic lover, whose gradual disillusion and dissolution mirror his country's lurch from euphoria to despair.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting account of the new Russia outside Moscow.......2002-02-11

This account of the author's year as a foreign student in Voronezh covers much of the same ground seen in othe memoirs of the new Russia (see, e.g., Casino Moscow). Unlike most other such books, though, the author is in the provinces, away from glitter and mob life in Moscow. Worth a read, although I wish it had been published sooner after the events described.

4 out of 5 stars Catapulted straight back to Russia.......2002-01-27

I spent an academic year in Russia, just as Charlotte did, only two years later. I found this book really riveting, and could barely put it down until I had quickly finished it. My congratulations to the author for capturing so well the atmosphere of magical Russia and its warm countrymen, along with a glimpse into the country's painful history and current problems. I am so pleased I had the opportunity to read this book.

This eagerly awaited volume in the celebrated Best American Poetry series reflects the latest developments and represents the last word in poetry today. Paul Muldoon, the distinguished poet and international literary eminence, has selected -- from a pool of several thousand published candidates -- the top seventy-five poems of the year. The Best American Poetry 2005 features a superb company of artists ranging from established masters of the craft, such as John Ashbery, Adrienne Rich, and Charles Wright, to rising stars like Kay Ryan, Tony Hoagland, and Beth Ann Fennelly.

With insightful comments from the poets elucidating their work, and series editor David Lehman's perspicacious foreword addressing the state of the art, The Best American Poetry 2005 is indispensable for every poetry enthusiast.

            "Your burglaries leave no thumbprint
            Mine, too, are silent
I do my best imagining at night,
And you do yours with the help of shadows.

            Like actors rehearsing a play,
            The dark ones withdrew
Into remote corners of the room
The rest of us sat in expectation
            Of your burning oratory."

~ from Sunlight by Charles Simic

The maturity of the poems in The Best American Poetry 2005 is instantly apparent the moment you read "In View of the Fact" by A.R. Ammons. This is a deeply thoughtful collection of poems best addressed when you are in a contemplative mood. Within the pages there are many surprises, lovely conclusions and especially creative thought patterns. Sexuality and death seem to be themes throughout, but there is also humor and cleverly designed rhymes the wittiest poets must long to master.

"Ants" by Vicki Hudspith is especially comical while Mary Karr's poem about her son is especially heart-warming and leans more towards a serious realization of life's complexity within expectation. Richard Garcia's "Adam and Eve's Dog" lightens a topic most would find quite serious and Edward Field's poem of praise has a beautiful freeing conclusion with metaphorical appeal.

"If I were Japanese I'd write about magnolias
in March, how tonal, each bud long as a pencil,
sheathed in celadon suede, jutting from a cluster
of glossy leaves. I'd end the poem before anything
bloomed, end with rain swelling the buds
and the sheaths bursting, then falling to the grass
like a fairy's castoff slippers, like candy wrappers,
            like spent firecrackers."
~ Beth Ann Fennelly, pg. 46

What I am most impressed by in this collection of poems, is the truthfulness and the straightforward invitation into this sincerity. There is a cleverness in the crafting of each idea (I Want to be Your Shoebox) and at times profound lessons can appear through the viewpoint of a poet who sees the world a little more intensely (The Poets March on Washington). Jane Hirshfield's "Burlap Sack" paints an image of bondage and freedom, while Linda Pastan reveals a different type of cultural freedom.

Paul Muldoon's selections also provide a consistent mood and his love for rhyme and complex sentence structures invites you into a world of poems that reveal intricate details of your own life. At times his selections are realistic and edgy with mature considerations and at other times he has selected profound moments to inspire a more heartfelt appreciation for beauty. Both ideas seem to weave together to form a painting of how life is really lived in a realistic setting, as opposed to a more romantic rendering of ideas within a dreamscape of fantasy poems. Now and then, a line in a poem is so highly significant you can read the entire poem and then suddenly awaken upon a stunning moment.

"Wanting the tight buds of my loneliness
to swell and split, not die in wanting.
It was why I rushed through everything,
why I tore away at the perpetual gauze
between me and the stinging world"
            ~ pg. 133, Chase Twichell

I can also highly recommend the 2006 edition of The Best American Poetry, which is enhanced with pop culture references and a distinctly contemporary mood. As with all the books edited by David Lehman, the "Foreword" is well worth reading. David Lehman's experience in the world of poetry reveals ideas that will be of great interest to anyone interested in poetry culture.

4 out of 5 stars matt yeager is awesome.......2005-12-29

I enjoyed this book immensely. Quality entries from the usual suspects - Ashbery, Simic, Tate, Ammons - are complimented nicely by a slew of entries from lesser known poets. I won't get into each one, but I will discuss one in particular. I was most fond of Matt Yeager's narrative poem about a giant tin foil ball. It possessed a creativity that seems to me to be dwindling in most American art. You're probably saying, "a giant tin foil ball?" Trust me, this is a great work and I can't wait to see more from this young poet.

4 out of 5 stars BETTER AMERICAN POETRY THAN 2004.......2005-09-24

I find that the Best American Poetry is always enjoyable. Sometimes it is enjoyable because the poems astonish and delight, and sometimes it is enjoyable to hate. 2005 is surprisingly good. What one would identify as the more traditional of poetic virtues are openly on display. While certain of the poems felt gimmicky or cute, there was, running through it, an emotional intelligence and attention to the music of words that's been missing in recent volumes. This isn't surprising when one considers that its editor, Paul Muldoon, is as musically deft as any poet in the language today.

There are offerings from many of the familiars: Ashbery, Simic, Tate, Kinnell. There are also offerings from several of our great dead poets (Ammons, Justice, Bukowski), who somehow continue to be producing quality verse. This seems somewhat unfair, but perhaps poets truly are better off dead. Ammons's poem, where he mentions the flurry of death in his own life alongside other things that happen in bunches (marriages, first children) and Justice's poem about an old fisherman dancing by himself on a dock were possibly the two most moving pieces of work in the volume. Other highlights for me were Matthew Yeager's narrative poem about the huge tinfoil ball in the small city apartment (which my seven year old son also enjoyed) and Stephen Dunn's poem "Five Roses in the Morning."

Overall, I would pick this volume up.

                        Book Description

Turn-of-the-century Jewish life is explored in Poland, Russia, Hungary, and Galicia and compared to what was to be an utterly different environment in Western Pennsylvania. This book addresses how immigrants reshaped their traditions and lifestyles to fit a rapidly industrializing America. The story is told through oral histories, family memoirs, census reports, and local histories written by immigrants. The personal stories are often insightful and humorous, while maps and tables make this volume invaluable to researchers.

                            Book Description

Did America try to steal Soviet "cancer secrets"? And how could a cancer cure turn into a "biological atomic bomb"? Nikolai Krementsov's compelling tale of cancer and politics is the story of a husband-and-wife team who developed a promising anticancer treatment in Stalin's Russia, only to see their discovery entangled in Cold War rivalries, ideological conflict, and scientific turf wars.

In 1946, Nina Kliueva and Grigorii Roskin announced the discovery of a preparation able to "dissolve" tumors in mice. Preliminary clinical trials suggested that KR, named after its developers, might work in humans as well. Media hype surrounding KR prompted the U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union to seek U.S.-Soviet cooperation in perfecting the possible cure. But the escalating Cold War gave this American interest a double edge. Though it helped Kliueva and Roskin solicit impressive research support from the Soviet leadership, including Stalin, it also thrust the couple into the center of an ideological confrontation between the superpowers. Accused of divulging "state secrets" to America, the couple were put on a show trial, and their "antipatriotic sins" were condemned in Soviet stage and film productions.

Parlaying their notoriety into increased funding, Kliueva and Roskin continued their research, but envious colleagues discredited their work and took over their institute. For years, work on KR languished and ceased entirely with the deaths of Kliueva and Roskin. But recently, the Russian press reported that work on KR has begun again, reopening this illuminating story of the intersection among Cold War politics, personal ideals, and biomedical research.
