Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-09-06
Being new to the design world I needed a book that was simple and not encumbered with a bunch of mumbo jumbo. This book is easy to understand and perfect it really helped me to understand 2D Design. I really love this book!
Great Job.......2007-08-23
did a good job in sending my item I would order another book from them in the future
very good little handbook, but really ugly.......2002-11-12
This book is full of information, and is really well laid out. I use it frequently in the 2D class I teach, along with two other 2D design books. I like the clarity and the examples. However, there's no getting away from the fact that although this book is loaded with great stuff, that it is also as ugly and cheesy looking as a bad Xerox. That might be okay for a math book, but ummmmm, 2D design?
A tiny gem.......2000-11-19
A romp through the construction of visual form and pattern. This book is subtle yet deep. Although the example designs are not exquisitely rendered (but rather student projects), the principles that Wong exposes should be part of any designers knowledge base.

Very good.......2006-06-27
Another excellent book from Chris Pye, all you need to know to start letter carving.
Written in Pye's usual thorough and detailed style, it helps you with selecting tools, how to hold your workpiece, shows different letter styles, both incised and raised lettering etc...
A beginners course.......2001-03-03
This is a very good beginners book... I just started wood carving and my technique wasn't very good. After following the tips and tricks that you learn from reading this well laid out book the letter's I am carving are much stronger and the shapes more fluid. I highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
Lifechanging.......2006-03-01
I was recently in the Christian bookstore buying a gift, but I also wanted to get a couple of books for myself. I browsed around a little. One of the books I felt led to buy was this bible study. I was totally unfamiliar with these studies and the author. But I have learned that when I feel led to buy a particular book, I need to listen. So not really knowing what to expect, I bought it. All I can say is WOW!
This book will run you through the gamet of emotions. It will make you laugh and it will (guarantee it) make you cry. I love the format of this book. The first half of the book deals with a woman's earthly father and the profound affect fathers have on their daughters. Effects that can last into adulthood. This book focuses on both the positive and the negative. I could relate to so many of the stories shared. The second half compares flawed human fathers with our Perfect Heavenly Father. It also talks about forgiveness and helps daughters get a deeper understand of what makes their father act the way he does.
I have struggled for a very long time with trusting God. But this book has shown me just how trustworthy He truly is. If you are a woman who is struggling in the area of trusting God, get a copy of this bible study. This bible study has been profoundly healing in my own life. I think this would be a wounderful study for a women's or couple's bible study as well.
I definitely intend to read a couple of other studies in this series. I would and do, wholeheartidly recommond this study by Denise George. I don't know if I can even put into words just how much this book has helped me and changed my life and my view of both my earthly father and most especially my Heavenly Father.

Customer Reviews:
In a word: Heartstopping........2000-07-24
Johji Manabe takes comand of your mind, body, and soul with this epic tale. The first novel is terrifying and fun, as is the second. Somewhere around the third volume it becomes impossible to not find the next. When I finished volume 6, I proclaimed that Manabe had more guts than any writer I'd ever before encountered. When I finished volume 7, I was in tears. I preordered volume 8, checking its progress daily. I cried again reading that one, but finished the novel laughing. Not since Nausicaa have I been so moved by a graphic novel series. This is the kind of story that puts the "novel" in the phrase graphic novel. If you don't read this series, you are really missing out on something. This story single-handedly proves that Johji Manabe is one of the most brilliant writers to ever take up pen and ink.
The best comic book I've ever read........1999-12-28
And believe me, I read a lot of them. Outlanders just has that magic to captivate and enthrall, not through the cliched methods of mutants and whatnot, but by turning the space opera genre on its ear. Nothing in Outlanders will turn out how you expect it. There will be times when you are laughing out loud on one page, and then crying your eyes out on the next. It toys with your emotions. You will find yourself falling in love with some of the characters, and absolutely hating others. But no matter what, you'll have to agree that Outlanders is storytelling at its best, and that Johji Manabe's epic masterpiece hasn't lost its appeal, even after more than ten years since its original publication. Additional hats off to Toren Smith for his magnificent translation job. Nowhere in the books did it seem as though the words were not English to begin with. Comparing the Studio Proteus/Dark Horse version to the Japanese version even shows some fun the translator and touch-up artists had with the manga...for example, in issue #1, the names "Dark Horse" and "Studio Proteus" are written out in katakana on building signs which are blank in the original Japanese version. The name "Hakusensha" also appears, but in English. Again, the sign it appears on was blank in the Japanese comic.
I cannot recommend this book enough (though you probably should be at least 18 before you start reading it, as there is some pretty graphic violence, adult situations, and stuff you just won't get if you're not an adult). Take my advice, Outlanders is everything you could ever hope for on the comic page, and more.
You'll want to buy the rest after you read the first one........1999-08-29
Ah... a classic story of boy meets girl, girl is alien, girl's empire takes over world. Indeed. This is a truly cool comic series (not as cool as Caravan Kidd though...) and I HIGHLY reccomend picking it up.
One of my favorite stories.......1999-05-05
This is really an enjoyable series. I found out about it when I first purchased the anime movie based on it. If you're an Outlanders fan, you've got to get it. I've heard that vol 6 is coming out in fall of '99, and that according to Toren Smith, there will be 8 vol's altogether.

"With His Pistol In His Hand": A Border Ballad and Its Hero
ASIN: 1558854150 |
Book Description
La Rebelde marks the first printing of the original Spanish-language version of the memoir written by a revolutionary woman, Leonor Villegas de Magnón (1876-1955). Villegas de Magnón was a fiery critic of dictator Porfirio Díaz and a conspirator and participant in the Mexican Revolution. She rebelled against the ideals of her aristocratic class and against the traditional role of women in her society. In 1910 Villegas de Magnón moved from Mexico to Laredo, Texas, where she continued supporting the revolution as a member of the Junta Revolucionaria (Revolutionary Council) and as an incisive editorialist in Laredo newspapers. In 1913, she founded La Cruz Blanca (The White Cross), a corps of nurses for the revolutionary forces active from the border region to Mexico City.
Many women from both sides of the border risked their lives and left their families to support the revolution. Years later, however, when their participation remained unacknowledged and was running the risk of being forgotten, Villegas de Magnón decided to write her personal account of this history. With enthralling text and 22 pages of photos, La Rebelde examines the period from 1876 through 1920, documenting the heroic actions of the women. Written in the third person with a romantic fervor, the narrative weaves Villegas de Magnón's autobiography with the story of La Cruz Blanca.

Educational Funny and Entertaining. This is a good easy read, and if going to the island, after reading the book, I'd like to meet the author.
A breeze to read.......2004-07-14
This is a delightful little book, well worth reading if you plan to visit any of the Virgin Islands, especially St. Croix. The author's style is light, and yet packed with relevant and carefully researched information about the subtleties and nuances of Crucian life as well as the history, geography, flora and fauna, and much more, all of which can help visitors to appreciate this island and its culture far more than a "tour book." It leaves the reader feeling like a sweet little Caribbean breeze has just passed by...
Considering a Caribbean retirement Read this first........2003-04-29
No typical tourist guide is this. Emy Thomas provides a refreshingly frank account of life in St. Croix. She deals directly with the pleasant ý the beaches, the people, the pace of life ý and the sometimes unpleasant ý hurricanes, and occasional crime.
Emy Thomas has found her own way to enjoy this island paradise. Hers is no superficial experience. She enjoys St. Croix in all its richness. Not for her an imposing mini castle in an expatriate enclave. She goes out of her way to live modestly yet comfortably. She knows some creole, and is deeply involved in local social initiatives. She seems to blend and integrate with the majority West Indian population much better than could be expected of the stereotypical New Yorker. She joins the locals in laughing off the perpetual Government inefficiencies, rather than getting upset. But her journalist background is not entirely forgotten. She still manages to take a few swipes at local politicians.
If you know St. Croix already, you will readily identify with Emy Thomasý perspectives and sense of humor. If you ever wondered what a Caribbean retirement would be like - read this before you decide. It will prepare your mind, and most likely will make you want to do it even more.

This is an excellent book for parents who want more information and tips on how to spank with love. This book doesn't advocate abuse or "hitting."
Whack 'em with a spoon???.......2006-01-03
Yikes! This author is into child abuse, recommending beating little kids with objects. Dangerous advice, unless you're in the mood to get arrested. Try directing your anger on a pillow or punching bag instead. It's a lot safer than beating up your child. Try accepting normal child behavior and keep your cool.

Book Description
Lots of Love and a Spanking! is a disciplnie plan for children using the old-fashioned method of spanking to teach obedience and respect. But spanking with a difference! Not the screaming, red-faced, violent beating that many people imagine when they hear the word; but "a few hard whacks on the bottom, given by a calm parent, followed by a loving talk explaining how much the child is loved, why he got a spanking, and how to avoid getting one in the future." This book explains why current discipline philosophies are not producing polite, obedient and cheerful children, and that our entire country is seeing the results of those inadequate discipline methods. This book combines the "firm hand" approach of our forefathers with the self-esteem and anti-violence concerns of today. A one-of-a-kind book!
Customer Reviews:
From my perspective..........2007-07-19
I have suffered severely at the hands of people like this author... who believe in spanking as a solution to every problem. Parents like these are completely unaware of the effects they have on their small, trusting little children when they spank them as a first, second, and last resort to every behavior. The severity, frequency, and motivation of these spankings (which this author is encouraging) can have a brutal, irreparable effect mentally and physically on a child.
I have researched this topic for months, from Discipline Without Shouting or Spanking: Practical Solutions to the Most Common Preschool Behavior Problems to Spanking: A Loving Discipline : Helpful and Practical Answers for Today's Parents, and everything in between, trying to find out if there is a way to raise a happy, healthy, well-balanced child while using spanking as a discipline.
From my perspective as a still-recovering victim of this woman's type of teachings, I have decided for myself that spanking a child is not cruel or abusive, and can produce normal, happy children. HOWEVER- IT MUST BE DONE IN MODERATION, AND ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS IN LOVE. I cannot stress this enough. If you grab a child by the arm, spin him around, and smack him until he wails in terror, you have GONE TOO FAR. Comparatively, the long, drawn-out, painful spanking rituals, processes, and steps that this author condones are not healthy, and are certainly not loving! Her methods intend only to force a child to behave through violent force and use fear of pain to control their every behavior. Parents should never, never, never, never spank their child in anger.
There are healthy middle grounds to this type of discipline. And, in contrast to what this author believes, spanking is not about the pain of the punishment. More pain does NOT mean better behavior.
Finally, I must stress that one of the biggest factors that contributed to my own suffering was the horrible idea that the child must be stripped bare from the waist down in order to what... feel the spanking? The only thing that this will do to a child is cause unnecessary humiliation and shame. The only time a parent should force their child to remove their clothes is when they are very young, and desperately need a bath. Even a child has rights to the boundaries of their own bodies... and to intentionally violate these boundaries and force them to expose themselves for punishment is very simply not conducive to a healthy child. This sort of spanking practice will leave a child feeling helpless and violated, unable to defend or protect themselves from their physically stronger parents.
I am seventeen years old. I have never written anything so difficult in my life, but I have written it in hopes that it will spare even a couple of children from the harmful effects of the type of spanking that this author condones.
It works.......2006-11-29
Corporal punishment has been used as a discplinary tool for millenia. There's no reason to think it stopped working all of a sudden. My son is 10 and my daughter is 12 and they talk back to neither me or my husband. The fact is that the presence of a paddle in our household keeps our kids mindful of consequences. A sore backside isn't the end of the world.
the heroine rides in with the paddle.......2006-06-20
Once again, yet another "fundamentalist supermom"-- paddle in hand,
rides in to save the day from bratty, horrible kids.
At least this author is not a former child actress, and at least
she has the courage to use the word "spanking" rather than the standard fundamentalist euphemism "discipline."
When are all of these fundamentalists going to realize that they are damaging the cause of Christ with all of this thinly veiled S&M stuff? Eegads!!!
A lot of crap.......2006-05-10
I grew up being spanked on the bottom with the hand exactaly 3 times and i turned out okay. I luckly live in Germany, were spanking i totally forbidden since 2000 (good thing, even thought i don't find hand spanks so bad). Anyone who spanks their children with a ruler, paddle or wooden spoon is crazy to me! Whenever something else than the hand is used it isn't spanking anymore (to me) it's child abuse.
Beat up little children.......2006-01-03
Good grief, what a stupid book! Unless you want to create aggressive offspring, who turn into messed-up adults inclined to BDSM.
Normal people don't feel the need to beat up little children with a "ruler, wooden spoon, or small paddle" like Pritchett does. Pritchett is an uneducated moron who shouldn't be writing books about children.

Just what I needed.......2006-08-13
Doing research on the Irish Brigade for some writing, This book was just what I needed.
Outstanding!.......2004-02-12
William McCarter's book is quite an interesting tale of his involvment as a private for the famous Irish Brigade. McCarter's vivid descriptions of soldier life, marching, camping, facing cold weather, hard living and the Battle of Fredericksburg was very well done. McCarter missed Antietam although his regiment did face the Confederates at the heights of Fredericksburg. McCarter tells such a facinating, informative, sad, happy, yet chilling story at times during his soldier career that it was hard to put this book down. His vivid story of Fredericksburg and how the brigade battled it out, how he was injured and how he escaped death while suffering upon the battlefield was certainly the best part of the book. I wish more soldier accounts were written as well as this one as this book is one of the better books I've read that tells a soldier's story. 5 STARS!
An enlisted man's memoirs on the glorious Irish Brigade.......2001-03-15
William McCarter was a twenty-one year old Irish immigrant when he enlisted in the 116th Pennsylvania Infantry in August 1862. The unit soon became part of the Second Brigade, First Division, Second Corps, Army of the Potomac, better known as the fabled Irish Brigade and Carter's memoirs, "My Life in the Irish Brigade" has the distinction of being the first full-length memoir published by an enlisted man in the Irish Brigade. McCarter's account covers the brigade from the Seven Day's Battles in which it made its battlefield reputation, to its assault against the Bloody Lane at Antietam, to the charge up Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg where McCarter was gravely wounded and forced to leave the army. Because he was detailed as the personal scribe to General Thomas F. Meagher, commander of the Irish Brigade, McCarter was able to meet and judge the famous generals of the Union Army such as Ambrose Burnside and Winfield Scott Hancock. Kevin E. O'Brien, who has written widely on the Irish Brigade, edits the volume and in addition to his Endnotes he has included several interesting items in the Appendixes, such as the poem "The Irish Dead on Fredericksburg Heights" which was printed in the "Irish-American" in 1863. McCarter's recollections are quite engaging, and his description of the Brigade's actions at the fateful battle of Fredericksburg, where the vast majority of its 1,200 men were killed or wounded, is the best part of the book. If you have more than a passing familiarity with the history of the Irish Brigade, this is an excellent book to give you a unique and fascinating perspective on their glory days during the Civil War. It is also one of the better written memoirs, by enlisted man or general, you will find.
This was great reading!.......2000-02-21
The Civil War has always been of great interest to me. Consequently, when I find a book that tells of real-life experiences coming directly from the pen of the man who experienced the things he wrote about, I am automatically interested. Private McCarter wrote candidly of what he witnessed, felt and thought while in the Irish Brigade. His book is easy to understand and evokes vivid mental pictures of the scenes he describes. He seemed to be an educated, good-hearted man who, if he was alive today, I would love to meet.

Book Description
The essays in this collection explore the implications that the growing challenge from "evolutionary" concepts of human nature have in various policyareas and show what must be done to ensure that policies conform to humanbehavior and its limits for change. As our conceptualizations of humanbehavior switch from one that says human behavior is a product of culture(through learning and socialization) to one that claims that behavior isthe outcome of both cultyre and genetics and biology, it is necessary for public policy to change as well. The contributors in this volume examine what happens when it is no longer possible to base policy solely on the basis ofculturally-constructed human behavior. Many argue that to ignore "nature" onbehalf of "nurture" will result in incomplete solutions to social, political, and economic problems.

Interesting linkages.......2006-05-22
This book is a bit uneven. Some of the chapters don't seem to fit too well (such as the Zak chapter). However, the book's argument--that evolutionary theory suggests different policy solutions to problems than standard social science theory--is nicely illustrated by other chapters. Chapters by Ellis and McGuire/Gruter and Blank all get one thinking that a knowledge of human nature might be very helpful in figuring out how we might address public problems.
Thus, while it is regrettable that some chapters wander away from the book's theme, those chapters that address the central issues of the book (as outlined in the introductory essay) serve a valuable purpose.
