This is an exquisite look at Newport Rhode Island by Betty Barden Pardee, a contributing editor to Bon Appetit, who, with her husband is a year-around resident of Newport. Ms. Pardee takes the reader inside the mansions for a private look at the interiors and gardens of this community from a bygone era.

Photographer Mick Hales, whose work has appeared in House and Garden, Vanity Fair, Architectural Digest, and Town and Country does an extraordinary job capturing the light, mood and character of Newport.

Designers, decorative artists, and landscape designers will especially enjoy these pages.

I used to live in Newport and I recognize many of the houses in this book. You will not see these private interiors and gardens any other way. The photography and writing are excellent.

Private Newport features page after page of gorgeous homes--those that only we mere mortals can only dream about! The photography is spectacular and I love the way the exterior of the homes and their grounds are included, as well as the amazing interiors. This is a great gift for anyone who has visited Newport or who desires to. You won't see these homes on the mansion tour as they are privately owned and not open to the public.

Any intelligent student of Japanese Brush Painting will recognize the importance of
Kay Morrisey Thompson's stunning book "The Art and Techniques of Sumi-e" which
has been in demand since 1960 and has been awarded the Good Design Award by the
American Booksellers Association. Her text is beautifully written and clearly
moves the student along from the basics into the impressionistic world of
Sumi-e.
One cannot "lump" Chinese art and Sumi-e(a Japanese style) together or they will have completely missed the inspiring philosophy and impressionistic link with
Shodo ( Japanese calligraphy) as illustrated by the artist Sensei Uchiyama.All
Dedicated Sumi-e students should realize that their goal is to first master and understand their
basic strokes and then personalize this artform to reflect their individualizm. Although brush painting originated in China, the Japanese Zen Buddhist priests adapted it to their culture. Therefore, the word
"Sumi-e-"is a Japanese word describing a Japanese style of painting. It's
meaning "ink picture" is a very broad term which allows the student to be creative.
To understand this very complex ancient art the student
must read and explore as many available books as possible about brush painting to broaden his or her
horizons. This book should definitely be on the student's "Must Have" list.

A Grand Title for a Rubbish Book.......2002-10-11

Any person hoping to learn the art of Sumi-e will be poorly served by this book.
All the illustrations are hurried and rough.The author tries to explain this away by stating that the illustrations were hurried through for inclusion in the book.
Absolute rubbish!!Any reasonable Sumi-e or Chinese painter can do a very quick but quite beautiful painting.
If you want two very good examples of books to buy then look no further than "Chinese Painting Techniques" by Alison Stilwell Cameron, or "Chinese Painting Techniques for Exquisite Watercolors" by Lian Quan Zhen.
Both these books are superb.
I own all three of the titles here and can truly say that "The Art and Technique of Sumi-e.." is very poorly presented and I never use or read it.

Excellent instructions, beautiful illustrations.......2000-05-03

This is an excellent book for any student of Japanese ink painting. The author's clear instructions focus on technique as well as the spiritual side of sumi-e. The illustrations are exceptionally beautiful & worth the price alone.

The book starts out by discussing materials as well as a student's mindset. Line brush strokes, washes and calligraphy brushwork are then detailed & illustrated.

The author then talks about the four gentlemen of Japan. They include the orchid, bamboo, plum & chrysanthemum. Because they are so varied, practicing these has really helped my paintings improve.

Many other subject types are covered. Some include grass, flowers, trees, fruits, vegetables, birds, and animals. Landscape element techniques encompass rocks, clouds and mountains.

Sumptuously, richly camp!.......2001-11-06

This book is indeed oversized. It's 170 pages or so, but more striking are the dimesions - approx 22" x 8". The pages are silver gilded on each edge, and the binding itself is pink. In fact, this is a typical Taschen book.

This book is a truly luscious confection. The images are outrageously camp and highly stylised. For those of you who know Pierre & Gilles work, this photographer's pictures may seem to be basis for their style, but Bidgood uses real models and makeup rather than airbrush work on the raw prints.

Just looking at the photograph of the Pan-figure on the jacket starts your mouth watering, finally begining to drool as you pass from page to page.

If you can find a shelf on which to fit this book, you MUST buy it. It's simply beyond words. (...)

Unique, Beautiful, and Sexy Study!!.......2000-09-19

I really enjoyed this beautiful over-sized photography book. What a work of "Art" in itself, from its pink cover to the beautiful photos inside. James Bidgood is considered the father of the gay pulp and glamour aesthetic. An American photographer in the 50's who transformed his apartment into a fantasy land to photograph these beautiful boys. This book is just crammed with photos of beautiful young men. Included are essays explaining his life and these photographs. Some may consider these photos campy, but they have a beauty and style that was really unique to that period and time. James Bidgood was also the director of the homoerotic film "Pink Narcissus" in the 70's.

This is a definite must for your collection. A very sensual and emotional book of beautiful photographs. Highly recommended.

I caught Bidgood's Pink Narcissus on tape a few years ago and felt as if I'd taken a hallucinogenic drug. Although Benderson's detailed, sensitive essay points it out, nobody seems to have noticed that this work is poetic allegory--symbolic dreamwork. This work is much more than it seems to some on the surface. Benderson noticed it. I hope other readers do.

In this book Ash gets a Pikachu and doesn't get Charmander, Squirtle, or Bulbasaur because he's late to get his Pokemon. Gary is there when Ash arrives and Gary already has a Pokemon. There are lots of exciting parts to the book, and Pikachu almost dies saving Ash! And also Ash takes Pikachu to the Cerulean City Pokemon Center, breaks Misty's bike, and heals Pikachu. Then they fight off Team Rocket.

Made me drool with anticipation.......2002-07-12

Your reaction to this book will probably depend on where you are
in your career life. If you have already retired, you will be in
the amen corner; if you are close to retirement, you will be
drooling with anticipation; and if you like Frost have miles to
go before you sleep, you will be green with envy. In "The First
Year", John Mosedale describes the first year after he retired
from being a writer for the CBS evening news. He had loved his
career, he says, but he didn't miss it a bit.

Written as a series of journal entries, he describes the simple
pleasures he experienced. He was able to leisurely peruse the New
York Times and several other major newspapers. He could take an
unhurried walk through the different neighborhoods of Manhattan.
He was able to stay up late to watch the last quarter of Monday
Night Football, knowing he could sleep in the next day. He could
go through the shelves of disorganized books in his apartment and
bring order to chaos. He could even visit his summer home, a
cabin on an island in Minnesota, and stay as long as he wanted,
instead of the rushed two or three weeks he had been able to
spare during his working life. In short, he could do what he
wanted when he wanted - a luxury that school teachers experience
during the summer, at least partially compensating for the
frenzied pace the rest of the year.

I found the 1st part of the book to be rather poorly written but it improved as it went along. The story was sort of interesting but to be honest I wouldn't recommend buying it. Sign it out at the library instead - my local library will be recieving mine as it is not a keeper.

A wife's view.......2003-09-18

Being the wife of the author I am naturally biased in regard to this book. It is an honest, light-hearted account of our very normal family travelling in Africa.
When we were planning our African adventure, we found so little information available to help us, and so the idea for this book was born. If you are planning a long, potentially dangerous trip with your children, I'll bet there aren't many people cheering you on. This book is here to encourage you, and give you information to help you in the planning.
And if you don't have a trip planned, be warned, this book may change your mind.

Eron & Lund's book is an incredibly clear, practical, and inspirational approach to working with clients of all ages. Even more than that it is a recipe for bringing out the best in people struggling with stuckness and challenges individually or in relationships. The non-pathologising approach of the authors enables a framework to mobilise clients toward change. It is easy to understand why Eron and Lund's book has been rated as one fo the greatest contributions to family therapy of all time.

Good reference material.......2005-01-26

Very good book to be used for technical reference. It is NOT a novel (a la "Hunt For Red October"), so if that is what you are looking for, look elsewhere. Fairly accurate, if a bit dated. A lot has happened since this book was published. The M8 AGS was never fielded, the 2d ACR-L is now a Stryker Brigade, both 2d ACR and 3d ACR have seen combat in Iraq and elements of 11th ACR are heading over, and the then CPT H.R. McMasters of E Troop, 2d ACR (see battle of 73 Easting) is now COL McMasters and the 71st Colonel of the 3d ACR. So Mr Clancy, you have a lot of catching up to do! Till then - "BRAVE RIFLES!" Aiee-yah.....

Guided Tour series continues...........2003-09-27

Like the other six books in the Guided Tour series, Tom Clancy and John D. Gresham take the reader on a behind-the-scenes field trip of a military unit. This time, the focus is on an Army armored cavalry regiment, its equipment and personnel, the history of armored cavalry, and two short fictional scenarios depicting the use of this type of unit in combat.

The one new feature (later included in all the later books) is a softball interview with now-retired General Fred Franks, former commander of the VII Corps during Desert Storm and later commander of TRADOC, Training and Doctrine Commmand. Although informative, Armored Cav is more of a love letter to the Army than an unbiased piece of reporting. Still, fans of Clancy and of military hardware should not pass this book (or any of this series)up. Just park high expectations at the roadside and you'll enjoy this for what it is, and not what it could have been.

Average Work.......2002-11-13

If you have read any of the other books in the series then you know what to expect with this one. The book follows the familiar format, it details out the machinery used, the troops, the division make up of the topic in the armed forces, a few interviews and it ends with some fictionalized short stories describing the expected types of encounters this area would face in the future. All in all a basic book on the armored cavalry that gives you all the basics. The Clancy style of writing, lots of facts and plodding movement work well in this type of book given that you buy it to learn about the subject.

Overall it is a good effort and if you have been happy with the other books in the series you will enjoy this one. My only complaints were that there did not seam to be enough photos of the equipment for me. Sure they had all the main items, but I wanted a picture of every truck and tractor covered in the book. I also would have liked to have seen a comparison of the other counties main battle tanks - something he did with his Submarine and Aircraft Carrier books. And one last little complaint - what was with his ending every chapter with some junior high school type rah-rah cheer. We are talking about the military; do we need this type of comic book love-fest mentality?

Lacking.......2002-03-10

I'm all for anything Cav related. But this one could have been done a lot better had Mr. Clancey taken the time to set down and talk one on one with the rank and file Armored Cav troopers. While his technical details of the weapons used in a Cav unit are quite accurate, his explanation of how they are used is at times far fetched. The kicker for me was when at the end of the book Mr. CLancey examined a hostage resuce situation in which an Armored Cav unit is parachuted into a soccer field to snatch the hostages. After 11 years in the U.S. Army, serving in both the 82nd ABN and an Armored Cav unit I'm fairly certain that the Airforce hasn't the capbilities to drop either an M 1 Abrams nor Bradley fighting vechicle from the back of a C-130 nor a C-141. And the ideal of using a soccer field as a drop zone is a workable one but only if your talking about an A team or Seal team using High altitude low opening parachute techniques. I'm glad Mr. Clancey is giving some credit to our armed forces, I just wish that he would do more research on these projects and quit relying on his name to sell books.

well, in first place i love clancy's non-fiction book, and this one is great! it makes a full review of a army's cavalry brigade organization and composition, and at the same time a review of all the heavy weaponry used by the US army, the tanks, armored transports, the artilery, well, just abou everything! if u want to learn all about that, just go running to buy this book, u'll love it... i did :)

The authors of this important text explore the processes through which archaeologists analyse their data and how these can be made more rigorous and effective by sound statistical modelling. They assume relatively little previous statistical or mathematical knowledge. Introducing the idea underlying the Bayesian approach to the statistical analysis of data and their subsequent interpretation, the authors demonstrate the major advantage of this approach, i.e. that it allows the incorporation of relevant prior knowledge or beliefs into the analysis. By doing so it provides a logical and coherent way of updating beliefs from those held before observing the data to those held after taking the data into account. To illustrate the power and effectiveness of mathematical and statistical modelling within the Bayesian framework, a variety of real case studies are presented covering areas of common interest to archaeologists. Great treatment of archaeological modelling and probability.......2002-10-09

Although the later chapters are a bit difficult for the mathematically uninitiated, the early chapters provide a very readable and sensible introduction to the use of modelling and probability in archaeology. Those who have been intrigued by some ideas of Bayesian analysis but who found its concepts difficult to follow will benefit from this book. I think it should be in every serious archaeologist's library.
