This book is fantastic, the images are first rate and the book is very thorough, I found the text to be highly informative. When someone asks me where I would love to live if I could live anywhere, this is always my first choice, over Provance, over New South Wales, over anywhere, this is the place. The perfect climate, the wonderful architecture, the proximity to L.A., frankly this place is heaven on earth. This book lets you in on what makes Santa Barbara so special and the buildings chosen are perfect. I really can't say enough about this book, it is a book you will referance frequently and be proud to own. I assure you even if you have wonderful books, if you had one or two books to save this would be one, it is that good.

I had purchased the original edition of this book in the 1970's when I moved to Santa Barbara and it was getting a little dog-eared so I got the newest one expecting it to be mainly a reprint. I was surprised to find a large number of new entries done in the same style as the original. The text accompanying the photos by Patricia Halloran is refreshingly factual (rather than art-speak) although very brief. Most of the photos are excellent although all are still in black and white. For those wishing to view the actual buildings, street addresses are given in Santa Barbara proper, but not for those in the "royalty regions" of Hope Ranch and Montecitio.

I browsed this book at Borders today. This is a labor of love. From the turn of the century to the present day, it has at least one photo of every building of significance and by every prominent architect of Santa Barbara, Monticito, and Hope Ranch. There are many buildings by local architects as well as by famous ones. Also, the landscape architect is listed when that is appropriate. I loved this book because I have visited Santa Barbara many times and fantasised about living there. In fact, for me, Santa Barbara is the most beautiful place I have actually been to. For those readers who love architecture, this is a must have book: Mission style, Bungalow style, Spanish Revival, Mission Revival,Hacienda, Classical, Modern, Prarie Style, Californian, all are represented here. More importantly, the homes (mostly, but many government buildings are shown also), were commissioned by clients with the money to make the scale of the project majestic enough to last the ages. I have great pleasure is being inside beautiful homes, and this affords us a chance to see buildings that we ordinarily never would. If you can afford it,buy this book and have many years of browsing and dreaming.

Santa Barbara Architecture, From Spanish Colonial to Modern, is a wonderful informative book for this genre of architecture. It is a survey book, following lovely homes and businesses for blocks and blocks of neighborhoods in Santa Barbara. As an architectural student, I found it very informative and correct. Spanish detailing is abundant. My only criticism is that the pictures would have been better if they were in color, given all the color in Spanish, mission-style architecture. However, it's well worth the price just for the information.

A great book to start out.......2007-03-13

This is my second book by the same people who drew and painted those necklaces and bracelets in the book. One of the person in the book was also a professor of mine at FIT(Fashion Institute of Technology,NYC). He was a wonderful teacher and his works are just amazing.

I recommend this book to anyone who is starting out in something like mechanical drafting or jewelry design. Which is what I am in now. It helps alot. If you need to know how to render a bracelet or a necklace, just look up the book and follow. Its simple enough. It also shows you all varieties of bracelets and necklaces that you can get inspirations and ideas out of if you have problems thinking of your designs.

It helps to have this book at hand because it shows you the techniques and everything.

A Boring Read.......2004-12-07

While Marcia's writing was quite literate, this was actually one of the worst books I've yet read on the subject of ocean cruising. Marcia seems to find something negative to say about nearly everyone she encounters. The entire book is filled with mundane experiences and constant complaints about the people she encounters. Her statement on page 213 says it all, "But much as our days were fraught with incidents, I could never recall any that could be elevated, even in the re-telling, to the status of `an adventure'."

This is a wonderful story of two brave people who do what most people only dream of doing... Marcia is an amazing writer, and this book will make you feel like you are right there with them and Moongazer... It's very well writen, very entertaining, and a very, very good read!

Great book!!

The best of the genre........1999-03-11

Almost everyone who does any significant amount of ocean cruising in a modestly sized sailboat trys to write a book about it. Marcia Pirie just happens to be witty, clever, literate , an unusually keen observer, and a very superior writer so her "we chucked it all, bought a boat and sailed the ocean blue" book is vastly superior to most others of the genre. Not so much a "how to" book as a "why you might want to" book. An armchair sailor's delight.

The Italian states rallied and at Fornovo their alliance, the League of Venice, fought Charles' army to a standstill.

With Osprey, Its Hit or Miss.......2006-09-10

Having beaten the English in the Hundred Years War, France emerged as Europe's most powerful nation. It was a position France was to hold until 1870. In 1495, Charles VIII decided to advance his claim on the Throne of Naples by marching his modern army down the boot of Italy. Having seized Naples, the Italian states rallied to form the League of Venice and block Charles' return to France. A race began to stop Charles before he returned to France and the battle of Fornovo is the bloody climax of that retreat.

Five hundred years have passed since the Battle of Fornovo and it is inherently difficult to explain the ecomomic and military issues of that era. Unfortunately, David Nicolle is not up to this difficult task. He gets too wrapped up in the minor details and does not have the gift to make the complicated simple.

The other weakness of the book is the graphics. This book was originally published in 1996 and in the ten years that have passed, a revolution has taken place in book publishing. This book looks very tired with its washed out, black and white photos and mediocre illustrations by Richard Hook.

The Fornovo campaign is compelling and with all its weaknesses, this book will deliver for the person truly interested in the period. For someone with a more casual interest in the era, I would recommend Osprey's much better book on the battle of Pavia, 1525.

Informative For Wargaming and History.......2000-03-30

This Osprey Campaign Series book about the Battle of Fornovo is very informative. Provides alot of data on French and Italian military thinking of the time and the politics and military aims of the campaigns that lead to Fornovo. The account of the battle itself is also very detailed. My one criticism is that the clor plates don't give a good "feel" of the clothing and uniforms of the time. The book itself neglects this as well. There are some plates and breif description, but not much more. Overall very useful.
