Book Description
The Second Edition of this best-selling academic guide to irrigation design has been completely rewritten so you can understand it easily. Created for the irrigation designer and installer, as well as students, Simplified Irrigation Design clearly explains irrigation design and related hydraulics, without the need for interpretation by teachers. Each chapter builds on the other, presenting all the fundamentals of irrigation design before getting into the more complicated aspects of irrigation, such as:
- basic hydraulics
- pipe sizing
- friction loss calculations
- determining water pressure.
Photos and illustrations show exactly how every concept and piece of equipment works. In addition, you'll learn how to estimate costs and write specifications. Pipe sizes are described according to ASTM to help you fully understand the limits of irrigation pipe use. The expanded Second Edition of this popular guide to landscape irrigation includes all the latest equipment and techniques. Just a few of the new features include:
- Methods of conserving water to help you anticipate your clients' environmental concerns
- Computerized methods for managing labor and irrigation systems that will help you save money on labor and water costs
- Metric values for every Imperial (U.S.) measurement, enabling you to meet federal metric guidelines and better communicate with an international audience.
Another bonus: the author has combed the minds of irrigation designers, contractors, and equipment manufacturers to help you avoid costly mistakes that even veterans make. Whether you're just learning or brushing up on the latest technology, you'll want to read the Second Edition of Simplified Irrigation Design from cover to cover.

Good Book but, Over Priced.......2006-06-16
I have some basic knowledge of irrigation and right off the bat I was irritated with the way the chapters where laid out. He starts right in with sprinkler head performance and layout before going into the explanation of irrigation, and the basic principles of hydraulics that I believe should be the foundation what you learn first before anything else. The other thing that was that for the money I don't believe it was worth it maybe more like $20-25. Most of the information you can find on the internet searches. But, all in all it was a very easy reading book that did help me fill some holes in my irrigation knowledge.
Simplified irrigation design.......2005-09-17
This resource is excellent. Extreme detail, great illustrations, and information that is not provided by other typical irrigation books you'll find at Home Depot. I'm a landscape designer and highly recommend this resource.
Great book to learn to install a professional system.......2000-06-10
I read this book to get ready to take my Texas Irrigation License exam. It explained how to properly install a professional quality sprinkler system in an easy to read and understand format. This book goes into detail about how to layout the sprinkler heads, how to pipe it all together, and how all the parts work together. I have read many irrigation books...This was the best book to get a good understanding of sprinkler systems without becoming an expert in the field of irrigation. Perfect for the do it yourself homeowner or individual wanting to get into the irrigation industry. I now have my license and highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn to install a good sprinkler system without having to read an irrigation reference manual.
The title should probably read "Over-Simplified...".......1999-08-09
I was very disappointed with this book. The author places emphasis on the use of one brand of irrigation equipment, seldom mentioning other options that may better fit the application. I also found several errors in the enclosed calculations... not simply a typo, but in the methodology of the formulas. I would not recommend this book...

Stunning tribute to a fast-fading culture.......2004-12-06
This is exactly what a photo book should be - full beautifully composed, compelling, and skillfully printed images, with minimal text to bog the reader down. Images should speak for themselves, and these do so with a lyricism and grace that perfectly envoke the glory days of southern plantation culture. The print quality is excellent. Highly recommended.
a well photographed disappointment.......2001-11-10
this book will appeal to photographers but few others. it is mostly arty pictures of rivers, swamps, plantation workers and dogs. there are only a few pictures of the houses and very little insight into plantation life. there is virtually no text. this book seems to be a vanity publication for the photographer. i returned my copy in the next mail.

The Best.......2006-02-04
I love creepy tales with a kick! The illustrations are excellent and the stories are smart and funny. Thanks to her sister for writing the above review! I definitely hope to see more from Black Olive.
Dead on Cool!.......2005-02-14
Okay, so I'm a bit biased, because Ms. B. Olive happens to be my "little" sister, but as the folklore/mytholody/paranormal/creepy-crawlie/comic book/horror buff of my family, I have to admit I was amazed at just how good this comic is! Each issue is a lot of spooky fun to read (I loved the hilarious inserts between story segments! - I don't know where she came up with them but I loved them!)and the artwork is amazing. I always knew B.O. was a bit - different - but her creativity and unique illustrations fill a big sis' heart with pride. Her art is so different that she's easy to pick out of the crowd. Hope you enjoy Outlook Grim as much as I have! Happy reading!

That's how everything started.......2006-06-04
Memoirs written by Vladimir Raitz who organized the first U.K. charter flights to the Mediterranean, interwoven with a factual history of holiday tourism written by Roger Bray. An interesting, informative and enjoyable combination offers the best way to learn how mass tourism started in the 1950s. Undoubtedly, this is a very useful book for the younger generation of tourism professionals and travelers alike. As for the contemporaries of the events in question, the book may stir up a lot of their emotions and sweet memories.

ASIN: 0141001526
Release Date: 2001-07-03 |
Book Description
Expectant parents poring over baby name books-usually tomes as large and as interesting as phone books-are looking for that special name with special meaning. A name with a legacy, a name for the ages. What better place for book-loving parents to look for the right name than in literature?
Elegantly written, easy to use, and delightful to read, The Penguin Classic Baby Name Book is divided into sections of boys' and girls' names. Entries include information on origin, meaning, variations, and most importantly, literary namesakes. Throughout the book are sidebars with mini essays about literary characters and naming trends, as well as pointed quotations from the books themselves.

Top of the Top 25.......2005-08-09
Great literature names , Great stories behind names But need more names. This book is really by CArol MCD Wallace. She has another book out The Penguin Classic Baby name book. Be careful that is a reprint of this book don't buy 2.
More for literature buffs than parents to be.......2003-11-19
This book is not a conventional baby name book - it lists names that are included in the Penguin Classics series of books. It does not include 20th Century classics though, which is a big let down. It is not a book you would probably use solely if you were trying to find a name for your child-to-be - many, if not the majority, of names are not really those you would consider - Minnehaha perhaps? And certain books seem to be mentioned a little too much - `Orlando Furioso' must have a cast of thousands if the number of times it is mentioned in this book is anything to go by.
However, it is interesting, and it gives an insight into the importance of names as indicators in different periods of literature. It also refuses to concentrate on English language books - there are references to Ancient Greek, Scandinavian, Spanish, French, Russian and other non-English literature. If you are a scholar or fan of classic literature, you will probably find something of interest in this book. But if you are searching for an appropriate name for a baby, while it might throw up some you hadn't considered before, you should probably try somewhere else...
Customer Reviews:
US Tank Failures In World War II.......2002-12-06
This book is the best one I have read describing the root causes of our tank failures in the last year of World War II. It also discuses the options that the US had to provide tanks with the 90 MM gun. If the US had been able to provide large numbers of tanks with 90 MM guns by late summer of 1944 it would have considerably reduced American tank losses and increased the confidence level tankers had in their vehicles.
The author goes on to say that while the 90 MM gun was an improvement, it did not initially have ammunition that worked effectively against the highly sloped armor of the Panther tank. New ammunition specifically designed to penetrate the Panthers sloping armor was made avilable in March 1945 in the form of the T33 shot. Considering that captured Panthers were available for firing tests in the fall of 1943, this ammunition should have been available much earlier.
A few basics that the author missed. The 90 MM M3 gun used on US tanks and tank destroyers in WW II was designed for a maximum powder pressure of only 38,000 psi. Other contemporary guns were designed with powder pressures of 47,000 psi such as the British 17 pounder antitank gun introduced in 1942. The British mounted the 17 pounder on 700 American supplied Shermans. If the 90 MM gun had been designed with a powder pressure of 47,000 psi, muzzle velocity could have been increased by 200 feet per second. This change was made shortly after the war ended.
In addition, the army immediately started a program to provide a more powerful engine for the under powered M26. This was an even greater necessity for the much heavier so called Super Pershing. The replacement engine was the 1790 cid, 810 horsepower Continental V12 which replaced the 1100 cubic inch, 500 horsepower Ford V8. Development and tooling times for new engines was at least as great as that of new guns and ammunition and therefore also should have been started earlier. There were several V12's that could have been used, the Chrysler 1568 cid 650 HP, the Ford 1649 cid 770 HP or the Allison 1710 cid 870 HP but none of them were put into production.
If a person has a strong interest in this topic I would strongly recommend the books by R. P. Hunnicutt on the Sherman, Pershing and Patton and Heavy series tanks.
Why Americans did not produce better tanks.......2001-09-04
Since the US was the world's largest producer of cars and trucks, and during the Second World War also made excellent aircraft, it has never been clear to me why the Sherman Tank, the main battle tank for the US during the Second World War, was so inferior to the German Panthers and Tiger IIs. The author explains that the US military learned the wrong lessons from the Battle of France; they concluded that tank vs. tank battles were rare, and that tanks were mainly to be used against infantry and other soft targets. The Sherman was designed to be, at least for a tank, mechanically reliable, light enough to cross most bridges designed for car and truck traffic, and cheap. Huge numbers of them were manufactured. To deal with enemy tanks, tank destroyers, which were antitank guns mounted on a tank-like chassis, but lacking much armor, were developed. The shortcomings of this approach was not made clear until 1944, when the US for the first time came up against large number of first rate German tanks. American tank crews soon found that they could only destroy German tanks by getting very close; before they could do this, the German tank, with a larger gun and heavier armor, would often destroy the American tank. A good fictional discussion of the problem can be found in the novel "761," which is about an African-American tank group during the war. This book is excellent for anyone interested in armored combat during the Second World War.

Book Description
A Species In Denial is Jeremy Griffith's definitive work on the human condition after 30 years writing on the subject. Foreword by Templeton Prize winning biologist, Charles Birch. Addresses the crux issue of the human condition, our capacity for good and evil, describing how humans have coped with the dilemma by living in denial of it. The book then explains the biological reason for the human condition, ending the denial and maturing humanity to psychological freedom. Examines science, religion, politics, psychiatry, mythology, men and women.
There is an Introduction to the subject of the human condition and then four extraordinary essays: Deciphering Plato's Cave Allegory, Resignation, Bringing Peace to the War Between the Sexes and the Denial-Free History Of The Human Race, The Demystification of Religion. The book concludes with a brief profile of the Foundation for Humanity's Adulthood, a non-profit organisation committed to promoting this new frontier of thinking, written by world renowned mountaineer and twice honoured Order of Australia recipient, FHA Director Tim Macartney-Snape AM.
A Species In Denial has become a bestseller in Australia where it has generated extraordinarily positive responses from eminent people and the public.
Customer Reviews:
Like a mirror.......2006-03-23
As all books that tell you there are good reasons why you might feel bad about yourself, this book will give you an opportunity to open your eyes on who you decided to be.
Two possibilities can arise:
1) you are so fed up with what you feel about you that you want to understand why you feel what you feel about yourself.
2) you go on denying that what you decided not to be a problem might be related to your bad feelings about yourself.
If you're in case 1 this book might be interesting for you as it will allow you to be confronted with potential reasons that might related to your bad feelings. This might be useful for you if you ever decide to do something about it. If 2 applies on the other hand then just go on your way since you'll think this book is crap. Don't think that one option is better than the other, it is a matter of your choice only. No choice in life is bad, it is a statement.
A Most Important Contribution to Human Understanding.......2006-01-09
I have read " A Species in Denial "which so excited me that I managed to obtain two other of Jeremy Griffith`s books and read them as well as other of his writings.I also have had personal discussions with significant thinkers and well respected authors in psychiatry, anthropology, physics, and philosophy about Griffith`s ideas.I am a professor of psychiatry, working in the field for over 40 years and chaired two departments of psychiatry in two countries. I have been President of a national psychiatric association and have treated many individals and families in psychotherapy.
I am most enthusiastic about Griffith`s new paradigm and would assure readers not to pass it by.I consider it, one of, if not the most important contribution to both understanding and ameliorating The Human Condition thus far written. Many have written about our seemingly desperate situation, as individuals and as a society. This book explains the reasons and confirms, for me at least my studies and work over many years on Empathy in both humans and Bonobo primates ( one of the great ape family). It really must be read and understood by all who can acquire and carefully study it.
Is this a recruitment pamphlet [...]?.......2005-12-21
I received this 'book' as a birthday present from a well-meaning relative and became increasingly annoyed when reading what is more a pamphlet [...] rather than any serious enquiry into the human condition.
The most amazing thing about this text is how poorly written it is [...]. The author trawls through history, philosophy, high culture and popular culture sampling entirely unconnected quotations with which he attempts to synthesise (or rather yoke) into a cogent body of evidence supporting the proposition that he, the author is a "prophet" and holder of secret revelatory knowledge about the human condition. The result is a specious, tedious unreconstructed 'list' which fails to make any argument at all.
Hundreds of pages repeatedly remind the reader that their entire lives will be different once they have had the paradigm-shifting revelation of this 'secret knowledge'. In best conspiracy-theory practice, opponents' criticisms are polarised and discounted as 'flawed' thinking.[...]
Pathetic.
'Much appreciated book, and most remarkable of discoveries'.......2005-08-06
"A Species in Denial" is a book that is set to test the ego's that all of us have set in place in order to maintain a sufficient lifestyle within our society in it's current state. It will test our previously set opinions, on issues regarding both individual circumstance and humanity, that we have obtained as a result of each one of our private battles in this life.
I quite unintentially stumbled across "A Species in Denial" in an 'Angus and Robertson' bookstore in Melbourne. What initially lured me to the book, in the science section, was it's provocative title and back of the book summary.
This book delves into The Human Condition or simply put, the human beings (or our) non-ideal state. I had never previously encountered such a thorough analysis of what The Human Condition is, and to say the least I was initially fairly confronted and confused when i first read this book. But after subsequent study and re-reading, I am now, to say the very least, unbearably excited about the prospects of such a biological discovery in regards to human nature.
The author, Jeremy Griffith, and the established not-for-profit charity the 'Foundation for Humanity's Adulthood', are involved in an immense task, to put out onto the world table, an understanding of human nature, and the subsequent reconciliation of science and religion, which results from the discovered insight recognizing the importance of love, which has now been scientifically expressed as 'the tendency or desire to be selfless', and being very much the common theme in the development of life on earth and human beings.
It is a book that requires careful study, and for many, the inability to recognise the simplicity in the explanations, is simply due to the fact that much of what is said within this book, has never been discussed openly amongst human beings, in this manner, before. It is rational and concise, not abstract like so many discussions about The Human Condition seem to be. It is a book that explains on a 'macro' scale, the dilemma of The Human Condition.
I feel that all people who enjoy reading about life sciences, psychology, philosophy, sport, art, biology, physics, history, geography, archeology, etc.. will find this book very interesting and it is well worth purchasing.
It may become exhausting to read through, but holding onto a humble interest in society and your place within it, will turn this book into an exciting adventure for you.
I have a few simple messages to people interested in reading it, and to those who have read it:
"If what is written in this book makes sense, keep reading it, if not, throw the thing away"
and
"If you can't relate any of this book to your own experiences, then it is bull sh#t, if you can, then it makes sense"
You would never think that such advice would need to be said, in order to read a book of such simple clarity and explanation, but not all of us are able to remain humble enough to appreciate two sides to every argument within our world.
We all battle through life's little troubles and hiccups. Some of our troubles are huge and can't be discussed out in the open. Some of us block out the pain that arises from certain issues in life, in order to go on, presuming that no satisfying solution could ever be known.
These necessary ways of dealing with our problems, originate from the lack of knowledge about ourselves, and whether we are here on earth to actually fulfill some sort of purpose, and if we are, how we are all doing and whether we are contributing, in order to achieve this ultimate of goals.
We all wonder at the most intimate of our times, whether someone or something is going to recognize and understand each and every one of us and the good deeds we all do and how hard we have tried to make this world a better, more righteous place for all of us.
The purpose of the organisation (FHA) and the roles of all its members, have been clearly outlined at the back of the book, and all within the organisation are readily available to discuss with any readers, the origins and principles of the book and the organisation. I have spoken to many of them, including the author, in order to further my own understandings of the concepts present within the book, and discuss/argue some of the principles of the explanations, and they have been, to say the least, incredibly generous with their time.
It is fundamentally important for all of us to realize what the purpose of knowledge is, and to recognize the extent of our own individual ignorance to the importance of the subject of The Human Condition, keeping in mind, that the only group that needs to be recognized by all of us, is that we are all human beings, a part of humanity.
This book is simply their to allow people to discuss and analyse the latest understandings that biology has found with regards to human nature.
Once the principles that are displayed in the book are understood by whoever becomes interested in this most world-wide of subjects, it will allow each person to be able to discuss the subject of 'The Human Condition', and allow the principles within the book to proceed both through criticism and recognition by each of us. This discussion must proceed, since it is evident that humanity with all its individuals and families, in the worlds current state, is seemingly on a path of increasing levels of alienation, loneliness, and estrangement that is escalating incredibly fast.
It is somewhat thrilling, to merely be able to discuss some of the principles in this book, and I recommend to any person, whatever your level of education, to purchase and have a read of this book.
and finally...
" A truly wise individual is someone who can question themselves and smile, not question themselves and run" (Sam Akritidis, 2005)
Happy Reading, and most important of all, enjoy reading it. :)
Simply the Best.......2005-01-25
This book is certain to become an international best seller, and I thoroughly recommend it.
It is a profound book and a compelling read, as the author explains the truth about the human condition and provides answers to our universal questions about life.
These answers can be very confronting, but the overall picture presented is both compassionate and hopeful.
To finally understand the reasons for the state of denial in which we humans live, was for me a very liberating experience. It brought such relief to know why we are all in this dilemma (of why we are so angry, alienated and selfish when we know deep down that we should be the opposite). How we got to be like this is the amazing and heroic story of the human species.
I am so grateful to know that my (and everyones) grandchildren will not have to resign themselves to a life of living in denial of our upset state, and that healing of this state is now possible.
It takes time to fully absorb the explanations which cover all aspects of human behaviour. It is my experience that A Species in Denial has the power to bring about a radical shift in thinking and attitude to life. At a time of increasing international tension this book brings hope. The breakthrough thinking by the author Jeremy Griffith carves us a new liberating pathway to the future.
With regard to the `sustainability' of Griffith's account of anthropology and physics it is worth considering the positive responses for his work posted on the FHA Publishing & Communications website from some of the world's leading physicists and anthropologists.
For me, this book is simply the best. I'm sure it will become one of the great books of our time.
