Book Description

Sonoma Valley: the name alone evokes a wonderful sense of warmth, beauty, and magic. On hearing it, one envisions landscapes of sparkling rivers, verdant, vineyard-banked hillsides, and sunshine―in short, paradise. Having had this dream, those lured by the spell of Sonoma arrive to discover a place far more spectacular than imagined. In Sonoma Valley Style, author Kathryn Masson and award-winning photographer Steven Brooke offer us an intimate tour of this extraordinary place. By way of brilliant, full-color photography and lucid prose, we gain privileged entry into the stunning houses and easy lifestyle of this lush Eden.
Sonoma Valley Style illustrates, in full color, extraordinary, restored and lived-in Mexican-period adobes, 19th-century Victorian farmhouses, early 20th-century craftsman bungalows, modern “California” ranch houses, and contemporary residences on the cutting edge of design.

5 out of 5 stars Contrasts and highlights a variety of elegant homes, from restored Mexican adobes to Victorian farmhouses.......2005-10-12

Author Kathryn Masson is a native Californian with access to some of the finest private homes and gardens in the area: Sonoma Valley Style: At Home In California's Wine Country pairs lovely color photos by Steven Brooke of both exteriors and interiors with Masson's feature of wine country homes and weekend retreats. Each home receives descriptions of the homeowner's goals, collaborations between architects and builders, and review of unique design attributes and challenges. From a historic Craftsman farmhouse to a 21st century interpretation of Arts and Crafts style, Sonoma Valley Style contrasts and highlights a variety of elegant homes, from restored Mexican adobes to Victorian farmhouses.

5 out of 5 stars High Quality Writing/Photography/Printing.......2005-08-26

Sonoma Valley is not far from it's better known neighbor Napa Valley. What that really means is that it's not nearly as crowded with tourists. Still prime wine growing country the first vinyards date from the middle 1800's. It also seems that wine people tend to not be poor. The houses from the old vinyards are classical and elegant. The houses from the new vinyards are not bad either.

In this book you'll see a lot of kitchens with Viking type stovetops. There aren't many stoves from Sears purchased second hand. The book is a description of some of the more elegant houses in Sonoma Valley. It is profusely photographed by Steven Brooke an architectural photographer of reknown. His works include books on Rome, Jerusalem, Savannah, Napa and others. His pictures have a warm, creamy look that I find very inviting. The description that goes with the houses combines descriptive information with history and tales of the people who buile/remodeled them.

The book is about what you would expect of a coffee table book on a region: high quality pictures, high quality writing, high quality printing.

    5 out of 5 stars Making Watercolors.......2001-09-23

Harrison defines and employs standard language used in identifying watercolor effects. She also identifies watercolor usages and materials and is consistent in this regard. Her illustrative material is literally a survey of the watercolor world, with no histrionics, from abstraction to the tightest realism. It is a beautiful book and gratifyingly complete. She has no 'method' to push. With her insistence on planning as the key to realizing one's concept, she leaves the reader in peace to enjoy the experience the book offers of seeing how accomplished watercolorists plan their work.
The index is excellent. I will admit disappointment that Harrison touches only lightly on the qualities of now very expensive materials that would enable one to make useful choices. Her remarks on paper by type and maker I find useful and I wish this knowledgeable woman had given the reader more insights on other materials.

1 out of 5 stars Almost half of this book is a reprint of a previous edition........2001-02-14

Some years ago I purchased the previous edition of this book and found it very useful. When I saw what appeared like a new edition of this book I decided to purchase it. On the cover it is marked REVISED AND UPDATED. The techniques are described well and most are new material but Part 2 - Themes is exactly the same as the first edition and this was very disappointing and will make me think carefully about purchasing a book unless I can view it in a bookshop.

3 out of 5 stars Not my favorite book however.......2001-01-29

You might find it useful. If you can only have a few watercolor books, and you are short on technical experience, this might be just the thing for you. But if you are looking for a lot of creative inspiration rather than technique, this isn't so useful. I wasn't inspired by the contents, but the techniques are certainly ones that I do use.

5 out of 5 stars A book that shows how to master the art of watercolor.......1999-12-01

I was requested by my editors to write the introduction to the Brazilian edition of this book and immediately accepted, because, unlike o most books on art techniques, Hazel Harrison concentrates on demonstrating how to master all the resources and effects that watercolor offers, without implying that there is any preferable way in which to paint. The techniques are clearly explained and well illustrated and, in the second part of the book, she includes many examples of how different artists used the effects described in the first part to interpret various subjects. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to master the art of watercolor.

      Book Description

This book accompanies an exhibition at the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution, on the role of photography in Central Africa. This is the first book to link two related themes: the role of photographic images in constructing and circulating fantasies, ideas, and sentiments in Europe and the US relating to the peoples of Central Africa; and the role of photography in enabling Africans to project images of themselves by becoming familiar with photographic technology. Broad in thematic and temporal scope, the book focuses on several time periods, especially on the years before and between the two world wars.

This is also the first publication devoted to the important holdings of the Eliot Elisofen Photographic Archives, a department of the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution and a unique repository with more than 200,000 historical and contemporary images from all over Africa.

This book raises important issues associated with photographic practice in Africa, the distribution of images, the circulation of ideas in Europe and the US, and African responses to photography through several poignant case studies. This book also advances the scholarly discourse on colonial/anthropological photography, and contributes to a better understanding of African responses to photography.

When Nexus and his buddy Dave journey to Dave's home planet in search of long-lost friends, they find that things have changed for the worse since their last visit: the once-thriving world has been ravaged by pollution and famine that seem to be spreading from a mysterious factory. Is this merely another case of industry run amuck, or do ancient Thune legends of a planet-devouring creature somehow figure into the picture?

                  Book Description

1834. In these literary poems and prose, Pike became New Mexico's first Anglo- American short story writer and poet. The narrative portion of this book is one of the earliest accounts of travels from the Mexican borderlands by an American. His writings are some of the first that give the reader a detailed account of the Southwest and its people at that time from an outsider's point of view. His brilliant and concise impressions were recorded in his poetry and reminiscences.

                            4 out of 5 stars Breathtaking adventure.......2001-05-21

It's amazing to me that this wasn't written from a hospital bed. The incredibly wild adventures described in Kiwi Extreme make me jealous in that I don't live this sort of life, but at the same time make me appreciate the comfort and safety of home a great deal more. This is a true page-turner, with both danger and humor on every page. I couldn't put it down. I laughed, I cried. Better than Cats! No really, a very good book and well worth reading.

This book relates adventures of what the reader would like to do through the eyes of an exciting young man. With the world growing smaller and travel getting duller, this book will want you to hop on a plane, and go "down under."

The conversational tone is most enjoyable, and entertains the reader through the author's many exciting adventures.

As I read this book of prayers for the first time, I was so filled with emotion. Someone had written MY thoughts and prayers for me. It was amazing that another mother had my same feelings, and it comforted me to pray the prayers she had written.

This book was sent to me from Heaven, and it is something that I now give to every new mother I know.

This book provides, in the usual Osprey Battles format, a nice overview of the Dardanelles campaign. There are plenty of black and white photos, as well as color drawings featuring uniforms, armament, and so on.

From a modeler's point of view, you should add Osprey's THE OTTOMAN ARMY 1914-1918 for a more complete vision of the turkish army.

                              Book Description

At the tactical level of war the Germans are widely regarded as having had the most innovative and proficient army of World War I. Likewise, many historians would agree that the Germans suffered from serious, if not fatal, shortcomings at the strategic level of war. It is at the middle level of warfare, the operational level, that the Germans seem to be the most difficult to evaluate.

Although the operational was only fully accepted in the 1980s by many Western militaries as a distinct level of warfare, German military thinking well before the start of World War I clearly recognized the Operativ as a realm of warfighting activity between the tactical and the strategic. But the German concept of the operational art was flawed at best, and actually came closer to tactics on a grand scale. The flaws in their approach to operations cost the Germans dearly in both world wars.
Through a thorough review of the surviving original operational plans and orders, this book evaluates the German approach to the operational art by analyzing the Ludendorff Offensives of 1918. Taken as a whole, the five actually executed and two planned but never executed major attacks produced stunning tactical results, but ultimately left Germany in a far worse strategic position by August 1918. Among the most serious operational errors made by the German planners were their blindness to the power of sequential operations and cumulative effects, and their insistence in mounting force-on-force attacks, instead of attacking key Allied vulnerabilities.

The Allies, and especially the British, were exceptionally vulnerable in certain elements of their warfighting system. By attacking those vulnerabilities the Germans might well have achieved far better results than by attacking directly into the Allied strength. Specifically, the British logistics system was extremely fragile, and their rail system had two key choke points, Amiens and Hazebrouck. During Operations MICHAEL and GEORGETTE, the Germans came close to capturing both essential rail centers, but never seemed to grasp fully their operational significance. The British and French certainly did. After the Germans attacked south to the Marne during Operation BLUCHER, they fell victims themselves to an inadequate rail network behind their newly acquired lines. At the operational level, then, the respective enemy and friendly rail networks had a decisive influence on the campaign of March-August 1918.

                              Book Description

On March 21, 1918 the German Army launched a massive offensive on the Western Front in a last desperate attempt to score a decisive victory. The results were spectacular. They advanced up to 60 kilometers, further by far than the British and French had managed in their offensives on the Somme, the Aisne, and at Ypres. Then the offensive gradually lost momentum, the French counter-attacked in July, the British in August, and the Germans finally lost the initiative. Martin Kitchen, a leading authority on the military history of Germany, provides a gripping account of this critical campaign during which the Germans seemed so close to victory and yet were soon to face a humiliating defeat.

3 out of 5 stars A Tedious but Comprehensive Account.......2002-10-10

Martin Kitchen's The German Offensives of 1918 is a tedious but comprehensive account of the final, desperate German efforts to achieve a military victory in the First World War before the American Expeditionary Force arrived in strength. The main value of this book is that it covers all the German offensives from March-July 1918; most accounts only cover Operation "Michael" in March 1918 and the US action at Belleau Wood. Kitchen's account fills in the gaps between the beginning of the offensives and the final German realization that they had lost the initiative. On the negative side, a lack of adequate maps, a plodding writing style and poor editing weaken this book. Nevertheless, the German Offensives of 1918 is a valuable addition to a First World War library.

The German Offensives of 1918 consists of thirteen chapters, beginning with a summary of the strategic situation on the Western Front from February 1917 to February 1918. This introductory chapter is a near-disaster and spends several pages mired in discussing obscure German labor union unrest before awkwardly veering back toward a military discussion of the Western Front. While the authors hits the highlights of Germany's strategic position in the winter of 1917-1918, he really only scratches the surface concerning the doctrinal transformation that made the 1918 offensives possible. The second chapter, discussing the plans for the offensives, is useful for illustrating the diverse opinions in the Army High Command (OHL) about the paths to victory, but taxes the reader's patience. Opinion in the OHL was split over whether Germany should mount one large offensive, or several smaller attacks, or finish off Italy or even to stay on the defensive and just defeat the inevitable Allied attacks. Kitchen has written other books on the OHL and this is clearly where he is comfortable, but it makes for an overly high level discussion of the campaign where a few decision-makers like Ludendorff and Hindenburg appear in individual dramatic roles but the vast majority involved are cast as ciphers. The remaining chapters cover each of the nine German offensives and the British counterattack at Amiens on 8 August 1918. The author provides only a terse order of battle for the Germans on 21 March 1918, but does not list even corps or divisions. The maps provided are also totally inadequate, with virtually no detail concerning dispositions or movements. Given these weaknesses, this book is difficult to use for a campaign study.

Kitchen's conclusion is that Ludendorff was able to utilize a formula for tactical breakthroughs to end the trench deadlock, but that he was unable to translate these local successes into an operational level victory. Essentially, Ludendorff allowed his storm troopers to take the path of least resistance that provided for dramatic advances, but failed to seize key towns like Amiens, Arras or Reims. Germany's new doctrine used in the offensives of 1918 succeeded in integrating firepower and maneuver, but was undermined by a "chronic lack of manpower and a desperate shortage of horses and motor vehicles." Furthermore, the OHL's refusal to consider a compromise peace severed the link between the offensives and the pursuit of Germany's greater political objectives. Kitchen writes that, "they [the OHL] were blinded by their conviction that the alternatives facing Germany were world power or extinction." Ultimately, the failure of the offensives was due to, "the overbearing hubris of a military elite that refused to abandon its fantastic ambitions and denied the bitter fact that for all their professional skill and tactical brilliance their ingenuous plans had come to nothing."

The German offensives did score two major accomplishments: the rout of the British 5th Army and storming the French-held Chemin des Dames ridgelines. Both these actions resulted in heavy Allied manpower losses and significant German advances, yet the Germans failed to capture any significant communication hubs or to split the Anglo-French front. German losses were also very heavy and more difficult to replace. Kitchen fails to appreciate the great assistance provided by fog and mist to the German infiltration tactics, but he is closer to the mark in his evaluation of tanks. In Kitchen's view, tanks allowed the Allies to launch counterattacks without assembling so much artillery, but they were not decisive in themselves. On the other hand, Allied air supremacy was a significant impediment to German freedom of maneuver on the battlefield.

Kitchen's book also serves to expose the base falsehoods presented in the recent revisionist account, The Myth of the Great War by John Mosier, which claims that it was the minor American action at Belleau Wood that stopped the German offensives and thereby turned the tide of war. Kitchen account clearly indicates that the German offensives had reached their culminating point weeks before Belleau Wood and that the final attacks were futile gestures born of frustration to break the Anglo-French front. Indeed, the Americans played no part at either Arras or Reims, where the British and French stopped the German offensives dead in their tracks. Even as far as the so-called Second Battle of the Marne, it is clear that the French counterattack at Soissons and their tenacious defense of Reims far out-shadowed the efforts of the solitary US division in ending the final German offensive. Furthermore, Kitchen clearly details the decline of the German army's strength and morale, all of which began well before the Americans arrived in strength at the front. In fact, Kitchen notes that the OHL promised that the U-Boat offensive of 1917 would win the war but this failed, and then promised that the 1918 offensives would win the war but these also failed. In promising victory twice to a war-weary nation and then failing to deliver, the OHL fatally compromised German morale.

                                Book Description

The entry of the United States into World War One spelled disaster for Imperial Germany. The massive superiority in men and materials that the Americans could provide meant that if Germany had any chance of winning the war she must do so quickly. Randal Gray describes how, using special "Storm Trooper" units and high-mobility tactics, the Germans shattered the frontline, broke into open country and came within a hair's breadth of winning the war. Gray shows how the armies of 1918 had more in common with those of the 1939-42 Blitzkrieg era than to their immediate 1914 forebears. Finally, the outcome of the battle is investigated: although the British suffered 177,739 casualties, they could replace their losses in both men and material far more easily than the Germans could. Although the Kaiserschlacht was Germany's greatest tactical success of the First World War, it could not prevent her inevitable defeat.

                                            Book Description

Esau's Tears explores the rise of modern racial-political anti-Semitism in Europe and the United States. Previous histories have been more concerned with description than analysis and most have lacked balance. The evidence presented in this volume suggests that anti-Semitism in these years was more ambiguous than usually presented, less pervasive and central to the lives of both Jews and non-Jews, and by no means clearly pointed to a rising hatred of Jews everywhere, even less to the likelihood of mass murder. Hatred of Jews was not as mysterious or incomprehensible as often presented, but may be related to the differing perceptions of the rise of the Jews in modern times.

1 out of 5 stars called 'deeply pernicious' by most respected authority .......2004-09-29

The title, as one other reader said, is a giveaway that this author has a strange attitude about antisemitism. Esau cried when Jacob, one of the founders of Judaism, 'stole' his birthright. As the title implies, so the theme of the book: Jewish success and competition causes others to hate them. While this is undoubtedly one factor in antisemitism, no respected authority in the field gives it dominance over the teaching of hate by the Church, the need of dictators for scapegoats, or how societies mistreat helpless subgroups.

For of course, there are many elite groups in society whose success invites both emulation and envy (the rich, celebreties, sports heros, old money etc) without leading to conspiracy theories and murderous movements towards those successful people.

Robert Wistrich ("Antisemitism: The Longest Hatred") is one of the most respected authorities today on antisemitism. His review of this books says, "... in this deeply pernicious book. Although some chapters are more balanced than others, Lindemann's presentation throughout is marked not only by sympathy for the arguments of anti-Semites but by an undisguised antipathy toward Judaism and Jews. It is appalling that Cambridge University Press has put its distinguished imprint on so profoundly biased and ignominious a work.

5 out of 5 stars lucid, frank, serious, informative.......2004-06-28

This is the second book by Albert Lindemann i read - again with pleasure. Being a professional historian, he's also a gifted, even talanted writer and philosopher. He has his own, very recognizable style, sometimes witty and aphoristic, sometimes deep and thoughtful.

The book touches upon many "uncomfortable" issues, especially for a Jew, because any Jew, who attempts to come up with some more balanced approach to those issues, is immediately labeled "self-hating".

Fortunately, Lindemann's credentials as a historian let his voice be heard, even if there are attempts to discredit his work. What is especially attractive, Lindemann never degrades himself (neither in his books nor in the exchanges on the Internet) by indulging in acrimony and accusations, so pervasive in writings of his opponents.

To appreciate Lindemann's depth as a philosopher, one only needs to read the last chapter of this book, "Epilogue and Conclusions". It deserves, to my taste, to be published separately, as a very profound essay of Jewish history and their position in the modern world.

I found chapters about Jews in Italy, about history of fascism in that country, especially interesting, but the chapters on Russian Revolution and Nazi Germany also contain many interesting facts about such supposedly well-known figures like Trotsky and Hitler.

Here's a quote from the last chapter of Lindemann's book: "My inspiration ... is captured in the deceptively simple words of a famous Jew, Baruch Spinoza: "With regard to human affairs, not to laugh, not to cry, not to become indignant, but to understand."

                                            4 out of 5 stars Honest effort.......2004-02-25

This is a scholarly work on the origin and nature of anti-semitism and its history from the 1870's to the eve of the holocaust. It very efficiently refutes the failed interpretations of the Jewish apologists, whose claim that it is a causeless, inexplicable pathology of the non-Jews--independent of anything the Jews do, or even of their very presence, and is rooted in the Christian theology of deicide. It is, according to these morons, the province of a primitive impulse of the ignorant, something like the primitive's unreasoned abhorrence for ghosts and goblins.

Lindemann painstakingly shows the real complexity of the phenomenon, varying in time and place. He effectively proves that it is just another manifestation of the interaction of distinct peoples, with its quite understandable jealousies and hatreds brought on by competition for the goods of capitalism and modernity. There is nothing transcendental or ineffable about it, and can be understood by anyone able to think dispassionately and are susceptible to the arguments of the historical science. Most of what is written about it today, colored as it is by the propaganda of the holocaust, he persuasively claims, is the hooey of hysterics and the balderdash of the self-deceived. Moving decisively away from the by now traditional, emotional recitation of the injustice found in their over-worked narrative, toward a reasoned view enlightened by facts and data, he rises above such unreasoned nonsense and so will surely be accused of anti-semitism himself.

I especially appreciated his analysis of the phenomenon in Russia, and the background for the pogrom in Kishenev, is described in some detail. I was amazed to read how the Jews greatly exaggerated their claims, hoping for greater compensation from the West, which Lindemann is unafraid to relate.

His tools and method of analysis unfortunately ignores the important insights afforded by evolutionary psychology, a la Kevin MacDonald in his three volume series. Read together, they usefully complement one another.

His writing style, while rather that of an academic, is quite lucid and the material is well organized. This is a big book, perhaps a bit longer than it needs to be, but it is a serious antidote to all the baloney written on this topic, and the interested reader will be well rewarded by the exposure to an honest treatment of it.

1 out of 5 stars Rationalization of antisemitism.......2003-12-28

This book is a catalog of what anti-semites regard as the crimes of the Jews. A similar list can be drawn up for many groups. (Imagine the list of American crimes drawn up by Al-Qaida.) The irrational leap inherent in anti-semitism is that these alleged crimes spring from the nature of "the Jew, " or from the character of Jewish culture. Anti-semites do not see individuals but only representatives of an inherently evil race or religion. There is nothing rational or "plausible" about that.
PS Even the title is offensive: Esau was deprived of his birthright by Jacob-- by implication the Jews' first crime against the gentiles.

1 out of 5 stars Al Shirk Strikes Again.......2003-11-11

Al Shirk (he changed his surname to his wife's, Lindemann, back in the glory days of sensitive feminism) is a socialist historian of European socialism, who has been trying to indoctrinate students at UC Santa Barbara for more than 30 years. In my experience with him as a graduate student, he viewed everything through a filter that ignored contrary evidence and accepted only information that placed socialism in a good light. Clever, he was not profound. In seminar, getting him to agree with silly, but pro-socialist, propositions was a sport. Several Jewish graduate students described him then as a self-hating Jew. This book seems consistent with his ideological bent.

                                                Book Description

Three main factors affect the quality and composition of meat in farm animals. Production conditions determine the composition of the meat, while marketing and postmortem periods have a major bearing on the visual appearance and ultimate eating experience for the consumer. It is often difficult to compare research results from different countries since meat quality is assessed by a wide variety of procedures. Quality and Grading of Carcasses of Meat Animals reviews the development of commercial grading or classification schemes on a world-wide basis, and it provides a broad outline of the most common subjective and objective procedures for the assessment of meat quality. The book provides reviews on: o Ante- and post-mortem effects on meat quality o Reducing fatness in meat animals o Prediction of carcass composition and meat quality o World carcass and grading systems o Electronic identification of animals
