Mrs. Howard not only describes "the stones" of this city , but illuminate the soul with details of great historic relevance.
Beacuse of her I learned about the Ruskin's classic book on
Venice and the influence of the Arabs on the West.
This is a very good start point to explore in detail
(with books and travel) the architectural treasures of
this dream surounded by water.

Light up your paintings big time.......2001-12-24
Wow! Where was THIS watercolor book hiding? The techniques Roland Roycraft shares here are seemingly easy; splashing or flowing paint onto paper, masking and more. He also gives some very good hints for composition with clear details. Also value sketches (black and white, showing the density of darks and lights. This is a valuable technique for painters.)
I may not choose to imitate Roycraft's style, but I sure will be incorporating these techniques into my next paintings. If you want to improve your watercolor, I can't recommend this book and his other book on nature enough. They are just great.
Great Atmospheric Paintings.......1998-10-27
This is a good book for seeing what effective use of masking can do for a painting. Mr. Roycraft's use of masking is an integral (if not THE prime) technique for creating the numerous paintings demonstrated in this book. The other technique he uses is pouring the watercolors onto the surface rather than painting most of it with a brush.
This is not a painting method for anyone not willing or able to know precisely all the places to mask. The sparkling waves of an ocean in one of his paintings must have taken quite some time to mask and most likely needed a detailed pencil sketch beforehand. While the pouring is imprecise the masking is not.
The book has 1 chapter that gives a step-by-step demonstration of his pouring method. One can tell from some paintings produced that this can be a time-consuming method of producing watercolor paintings if the subject matter is intricate or detailed although the results are breathtaking.
I would like to see more demonstrations from Mr. Roycraft and perhaps more details about the masking as part of the process. Statements such as "I masked only the light areas before beginning the painting. This is negative painting in reverse and makes a beautiful abstract pattern." show the thought that guides the final results.
Most of the book shows paintings in a semi-finished state with the final result and some comments on the process and thoughts in creating it. I liked this book very much and would recommend it to any watermedia painter because it helps thinking in terms of positive and negative shapes and light. It also introduces a unique way of painting with watercolors which I suspect would work with fluid acrylics as well.

The book amazes me a lot. I particularly like the effect of the pouring. It seems difficult to learn, how to control the color flowing smoothly across the desired area? Is it time-consuming to prepare the masking(questions for Mr. Roland Rycraft) I would like to know some details of the procedure.

Basic retouching techniques.......2007-02-13
Well, as a photo retoucher with some experience on a more advanced intermediate level, there was very little in this book to actaully learn something new or groundbreaking.
How it is layed out and how the examples work is already described by Michal Stukow and I have nothing more to add to that.
In my opinion it seems a bit too "gimmicy" to use for more serious retouching work and some of the operation results are far too exaggerated and obvious to pass as is.
Never the less, as a basic book for starting out with retouching it quickly introduce some of the useful techniques one can refine and take many steps further, but if you are looking for a more comprehensive volume on the subject there are far more better ones.
Learn to Be a Cosmetic Surgeon the Easy Way - .......2007-01-18
I first came across this book while browsing in a book store, and decided that I had to own it. Since much of my photography centers around people and portraits, this book really concentrates on the many things that you can do to to enhance (or, for some fun do the opposite to) these photos. The explanations are clear and the illustrations make the steps easy to follow. I definitely recommend this book.
Some nice examples for beginers.......2006-08-17
The book contains several examples of basic correction techniques. The examples are well documented, each example consists of before/after and some itermidiate photos. Apart from the photos the book consits of instruction lines like 'set the brush to ...' etc. The week point is that there is hardly any deeper explenation of what is going on.
So this is a nice book if you are learning Photoshop and want to see some baisic Photoshop tools in action. But if you are more serious Photoshop user, I recomend Katrin Eismann 'Adobe Photoshop Restoration & Retouching' which is far more interesting and complete.

Stick with Amherst Books.......2006-05-19
This book is marginal in content, has few new or exciting ideas, and is smaller than the books American photographers are used to seeing from Amherst and some of the other publishers.
This was going to be the first book I ever returned to Amazon but before I could send it back I misplaced it somewhere...and its no loss.

Not very comprehensive.......2007-08-09
I purchased this book based on the picture on the cover, wanting to find out how this effect was achieved in Photoshop but guess what? It wasn't shown in the book at all. I was very disappointed. Although there were a few good tricks, they don't really offer anything new to someone with a little bit of Photoshop skills already know.

Conway's History of the Ship is a very good series indeed, and this is, to my mind, one of the most valuable books in the series because it covers an era in naval history little discussed elsewhere, the years between the end of the Napoleonic Wars and the coming of the dreadnought battleship. Fortunately, this great team effort fills the gap. Among the contributors are Andrew Lambert and David K. Brown, both authors of notable works about this period that are not currently in print. The authors cover developments with a focus on the Royal Navy and French Navy, but do not ignore developments elsewhere, and the chapter on the American Civil War will prove a useful introduction to those who may not realize what a crucible of experimentation that conflict proved to be. Other chapters cover the development of paddle warships, the steam-auxiliary ships of the line, warships built of iron, the introduction of steel as the material of choice, and the final pre-Dreadnought era. Given chapters of their own are the development of the torpedo boat, early submarines, naval armament and armor, and a very useful chapter on the varying kinds of steam engines in use during the period. The book is well illustrated with period photographs and illustrations. It would be a useful addition to your naval history library at any price.

better than I expected.......2003-11-23
I got this book after moving to Philadelphia (where Leeser spent 21 years), and figured I'd learn a bit about local shul history but otherwise be a bit bored. I need not have worried- this book was livelier than I expected, mainly because it is not just a biography but also to some extent a guide to the early years of American Judaism. I learned not only how primitive and weak early American Judaism was (for example, until the 1840s congregations were led by prayer leaders rather than ordained rabbis) but also how in other ways there truly is nothing new under the sun. For example:
1. Concerns over "the Vanishing American Jew"- In 1836 (!) Leeser wrote that "in less than the age of one man the name of Israelite will hardly be known in this land, save as an object of memory"
2. Day school vs. Sunday school- In the 1830s Leeser tried to start a Jewish day school, but the lack of interest was so overwhelming that he closed it down. So he held his nose and started the first Sunday school.
3. Church/state battles- In 1864, a group of Presbyterian ministers endorsed a "Christian nation" amendment to the Constitution because "a Christian nation with an atheistical Constitution is an anomaly." Leeser took a strong stand against such nonsense.
4. Intracongregational warfare- In contract renewal negotiations, Leeser retained an attorney (something that raises eyebrows even today in synagogues).
5. Reconciling Orthodoxy with America- Readers need only look to the illustrations of the clean-shaven Leeser and his congregants to notice that his Orthodox congregation was "modern" at least a century before modern was cool.
An excellent look at American Jewish history.......1997-04-11
Well written biography of one of the most important figures in American Jewish history.
Sussman takes a scholarly approach to the life of Isaac Leeser and gives the reader an intimate portrait of his life.
This is a must read for students of both American history and the American Jewish experience!
