Book Description

The California Pop-Up Book is a creative exploration of the California experience through 3-D op-ups, pull-outs, booklets, and narratives. Produced jointly by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Universe Publishing on the occasion of the LACMA exhibition Made in California: Art, Image, and Identity, 1900-2000, this extraordinary book highlights the dynamic relationship between the arts and the way the Golden State has been portrayed and conceived in the popular imagination. Whether promoted as the Edenic paradise early in the twentieth century or viewed as a mulitcultural metropolis of the future in our own time, California has exerted a profound fascination the world over for more than a century. Arranged chronologically form the Gold Rush to the Walt Disney Concert Hall (scheduled to open in 2003), this commemorative book will be a keepsake for audiences worldwide.

Filled with an array of surprises, the book features many of California's great treasures fashioned into pop-ups pop-ups, including:

-Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco
-Hearst Castle, San Simeon
-The Mission Inn, Riverside
-Sea Ranch, Sonoma County

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pop-up is Tops.......2007-01-11

Now I know why I love California so much - this pop-up book tells it all! Well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars I have lazy eye.......2005-10-14

Even with lack of proper stereoscopic vision, due to serious lazy eye, the figures appear vivid and dimensional. The book includes a set of postcards that may be sent to taunt the less fortunate who haven't witnessed the wonders herein.

5 out of 5 stars A Novelty Worth Having.......2004-07-01

As a California historian and author of the book: SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MISCELLANY, I found this California pop-up to be a charmingly fun novelty book to share when company comes over.

5 out of 5 stars The Real California - in Three Dimensions.......2001-12-03

The book looks like it might just be a decorative coffee table item, but the content belies that impression. The pop-ups are fun and attractive, but the real story is in the choice of objects and the writing. The selections speak to the myth of California that was consciously created by early explorers, developers, and movie moguls but became its own reality as people migrated to the state ready to play the roles the myth-makers created for them. In exposing the history through objects and some remarkable writing by such as Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Carolyn See, Graham Nash, Alice Waters, Terry Gilliam, and Richard Rodriguez, the pre-mythic history and the development of a true California culture emerges...one in which the tinsel is a little tarnished around the edges, but glows as brightly as ever with its own special light.

          Book Description

Fourteen of Walker Evans's evocative photographs of Brooklyn Bridge, most of which have never been published, appear in this edition of Alan Trachenberg's Brooklyn Bridge: Fact and Symbol. In the new afterword Trachenberg explores the history of Hart Crane's The Bridge, especially the poem's integral relationship with the powerful photography of Evans.

"[Brooklyn Bridge] is familiar in so many movies, in so many stage sets and, as Mr. Trachtenberg shows in this brilliant . . . book, it is at least as much a symbol as a reality. . . . Mr. Trachtenberg is always exciting and illuminating."—Times Literary Supplement

"The book is a skillful and insightful synthesis of materials about Brooklyn Bridge from such diverse fields as history, engineering, literature and art. Essentially it asks the question of why Brooklyn Bridge achieved such great impact on the nineteenth century American imagination and why it has continued to have a significant impact on twentieth century art and literature. In addition to its exploration of the bridge's symbolic significance, which includes perceptive analyses of such particular works as Hart Crane's great poem cycle and the paintings of artists like Joseph Stella, the book also includes a solidly researched account of the conception, planning and construction of the bridge. Trachtenberg's account of the intellectual and cultural sources of the bridge is particularly fascinating in its demonstration of the convergence of many different philosophical and ideological currents of the time around this great engineering enterprise, illustrating as effectively as any discussion I know the complex interplay of ideas and material culture."—John G. Cawelti, University of Chicago

"Alan Trachtenberg's Brooklyn Bridge is a fascinating story, the philosophic genesis of the idea in Europe, John Roebling's heroic effort to translate it into masonry and steel, and the meanings that Americans attached to the physical object as an emblem of their aspirations."—Leo Marx, Amherst College, author of The Machine in the Garden

What's a guy who barely knows how to read doing with his own library? Even he couldn't resist the four classic (i.e., reprint) Groo tales collected in this handsome volume, including the acclaimed tale of "Rufferto Reverie" -- the grand fantasy of Groo's constant canine. As usual, the Eisner-winning duo of Sergio Aragones and Mark Evanier make a buck (but not much more) recycling old stories for your pleasure.

Groo has a few problems with speaking, let alone having the skills to enable reading comprehension. A library? You jest. More stories here, including one where Rufferto is daydreaming, and you see how he would like things to be.

Of course, they aren't, and he has to get Groo out of trouble yet again. All the usual suspects are here, the Sage, Arcadio, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Tales of Groo the most devestating bumbler ever.......2002-11-03

                Groo Library

Groo gets involved in his usual mayhem and manages to displace his swords several times - Ruferto exercises in a little hero worship and fantasy, and like a faithful dog that's smarter than his master he manages to haul Groo out of the pit's he digs for himself. Groo get's involved in a scheme to "liberate" the most valuable sapphire in the world; the Minstrel, Arcadio the warrior, Arba and Dakarba, sister Grooella, the Sage and more fools who've never learned to keep away from Groo get involved in machinations. Groo attempts more gainful employment and serving as a village protector he manages to bring the village to destitution. The very last page introduces none other than Chakal - the warrior gal Groo has heart-eyes for!

Note: the printing quality is generally okay to very good for the series, but this is generally a collection for Groo fans and comic book fans. The binding on some of my copies is broken (these are soft backs) and the print is now and then not the greatest. As a fan, I bought every collection I could, and enjoy them despite this! Not though for long-term pristine collectors though.

This book is an intelligent portrayal of the important role of black women journalists in shaping historical events, a role which has been largely ignored or forgotten by many. This book serves not only as a necessary historical record, but as a lasting tribute to the triumphs of these eleven women.

4 out of 5 stars Where Elephants Fight.......2003-02-26

William Ardill presents in truly scarey detail the problems faced in a vey uncivil civil war with 3 different factions. One feels the longing to help people, the fears for native friends especially fellow workers and believers. He describes trying to mend bodies and one can only guess the time it will take to mend emotions and the country itself. The most fearsome part, howver, is the reality that it is happening elsewhere now and can easily happen in further African countries. WHEN ELEPHANTS FIGHT everybody gets trampled but Dr. Bill worked hard with his co-workers to share the love of Christ equally to all whenever possible.

5 out of 5 stars Handbook of Priactical Cutting on the Centre Point System 1866.......2007-02-18

This book works well with the Civil War Man also from R. L. Shep. These books are part of his reprint of first source drafting and cutting books. There is very little around for patterns of the Civil war period. These books require some advanced skills, but the payoff is great if you take the time to read and follow their drafting samples. Both authors use the size 36 as their standard which today is SMALL so beware that their drafts will have to be made larger for most people. But you do get very good style information. These two books work well because you get a "fuller" picture with both of these books. These books have two different methods but if you are really serious about the period this is a very good book for Men's clothing. It has coats, frocks, vest, trousers, everything for a suite of clothes. This book has information on cutting styles for the 1850's, 1860's and 1870's. But it is alittle difficult for a beginner.

5 out of 5 stars A great reference for making men's clothing of any style..........2006-06-03

This is such a good system of measurement and tailoring, I don't know why it's not used today. Devere writes in a semi-formal-but-approachable tradesman's English of the 19th century that is easy for modern minds to follow, and loads of illustrative plates are interspersed with the text. Anyone who has a passing familiarity with a sewing machine and can make a pattern on fabric will find this book invaluable for making men's clothing with a classic line and fit. Using only a few measurements from a common point on the body (Devere's "centre-point"), a "wrapper" of the body is generated which can then be easily modified for anything from loose lounge jackets to trim tailcoats, coats with or without skirts, and overcoats of all styles. By varying the details like collar depth, lapel style, and placement of the shoulder-seam, it is just as easy to make very historically accurate replicas, or modern jackets with classic touches. I have personally made several jackets and vests with the help of this book, and I am by no means a professional tailor!

4 out of 5 stars A fairly good book for learning the center point system.......2001-04-12

Although the order of the sections could be improved, it is a full description of the Center Point System, and has very helpful diagrams. There are several points where it takes a bit of work to understand what he's saying, and to apply the information to make a pattern different from the model, but I think it's worth that bit of effort. I've looked at several books on patternmaking and a lot of them are big disappointments because they only tell you how to draft their specific design. Although this book doesn't go into the intricacies and theory of cutting or how to make any pattern your heart could desire, I think it does give the necessary information to understand how to use this system to generate a pattern of your own design. And although I'm not interested in making historically accurate clothing, this seems like an outstanding book for those who do want to make period clothing from that time. It focuses on the cutting of men's garments, but there are two or three garments for women.

5 out of 5 stars Thirty Years War history.......2001-03-27

This book picks up where "The Lion of the North" left off, in the story of the Thirty Years War. As Hector Campbell answers an officer's questions about the make-believe war that he and his fellow-comrades are doing Hector never imagines it could be the great Turenne. But before long Hector is counted a part of Turenne's household, where he is involved in several dangerous escapades. First Hector, along with his boy-servant Paolo, creep through the town of Turin and send a message into the citadel, where a group of Protestants are holding out against the Catholics and their friends, something that quite a few had found impossible to do. Later, Hector, along with five friends, rescues the Baroness of Blenfiox and her daughter Norah from an attack by several hundred peasants. Hector also stumbles into a robber's den, where he and his retainer must fight for their lives. But the gallant officer does not stop there, instead he not only thwarts a plan to kill Marzarin, but also kills Monsieur de Beauvais, a very good swordsman who challenged Hector to a duel. This book is full of courage, a book that you will benefit greatly from. And for anyone who likes history, this book is a must!

                  Book Description

For many years the term fin de siècle has been used to imply a state of decadence which was thought to have pervaded â€~civilised’ European society in the years around 1900. This volume of essays, which draw on a very wide range of disciplines, argues that the period was in fact one of dramatic change, essentially positive and forward-looking in character. This was the period of the rise of the giant corporation, of mass production and mass consumption, and of the development of the generation and distribution of electrical energy. Novel social features such as mass politics, mass media, and mass sport involved the body of ordinary people and in the arts, complex reactions to contemporary social reality were aroused and expressed. This was also the period which gave birth to the study of quantum mechanics, relativity physics, mental processes and genetics. This volume forms part of a sequence of collections of essays which began with The Enlightenment in National Context (1981) and has continued with Romanticism in National Context (1988). They bring together comparative, national and interdisciplinary approaches to the history of great movements in the development of human thought and actions.
