The book is great, easy to understand and great images.

5 out of 5 stars It's All Here.......2005-12-01

Beautiful gardens and parks don't simply settle themselves on a site. They are planned, developed and planted by caring human beings. Those of us who are amateur gardeners and landscapers are influenced by the great public gardens and parks of the world. And the public gardens and parks didn't just appear out of thin air. All of what we find beautiful was influenced by something older or from somewhere else. And this wonderful book takes us back in time and on the highways and byways to times and places where man first came upon natural sites and imagined the possibility of recreating at least the impression of what his eye beheld.

This beautiful volume with its fine black and white photographs and drawings makes everything seem simple. It takes us down two main roads, the formal and informal. What could be more basic? Yet over half a century or more of shaping the land around half a dozen houses and reading dozens of books, some very useful and beautiful, I do not recall seeing an explanation of how these two main roads came to be trod. But in The Landscape of Man, it is all here from the beginning, from the time when farmers gathered on the banks of the Tigris and the Euphrates gazed upon the fields spreading before them and other such early independent beginnings.

We are the descendants of those who sought beauty and consolation in gardens large and small in the great civilizations of the past. Each of these, over great time frames, came to influence and cross pollinate with one another. And the Jellicoes trace all of these rivulets and streams from their headwaters down to the well established gardens of the world to which we are heirs. The writing is simple and direct, the photos illuminate their points, and their site drawings are clear and useful.

This is a book for gardeners to enjoy over the winter so that they may dream about how they might shape their little spaces and understand a little more of the shoulders on which we all stand as we place our first trees and shrubs in the bare ground before us. It is a great book, and I recommend it not just for professionals but for those whose gardens lie far in the future. It is the best book I have ever come across in explaining the history and possibilities of landscaping.

I have owned my copy for years. Hundreds of sentences are highlighted and notes fill the margins. I should have reviewed this fine work many years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect to understand man's perception of the unbuilt.......2004-06-01

This book as a classic. It is not only for those who want to study our changing perceptions of our landscape and our moves to define it over the past few millennia, but also to architects who build 'buildings'. This tome takes us through man's history, and outlines our aesthetic evolution with our landscape as a changing canvas that represent our different social conditions. A must-have if you are a student, an architect, or just a person who wants to see how we became what we are!

5 out of 5 stars History in magnificent photographs - by the hundreds.......2002-12-10

The original edition, hardcover with beautiful dust jacket, was printed in 1975 in England. It is one of my favorite all-time photo books, since in includes shots of Borobudur, the Ziggurat, the Red Fort in Delhi, Angkor Wat, Ctesiphon in Iraq - lots of photos hard to find even on the net. History all the way to the opera house in Sydney. A most fascinating book. Large: 9 1/4 x 11 3/4, 383 pages, a sound minimal text with each plate numbered and easily referenced - to me this is one of the great books. Everyone who has travelled, or who wants to travel, will enjoy this tremendously. (Many of the areas shown are difficult and often dangerous to visit, now.) Try it. You'll like it.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent start in the study of landscape architecture.......2000-04-28

This volume should be among the first 5 books anyone interested in the history of landscape must buy, no wonder it's included in the academic readings in many fine schools. The B&W photographs are remarkable, and it's filled with plans and diagrams from all over the world. In the last revised edition, covers the actual trends in landscape architecture, as well as asian and pre-columbian cultures. As an architect starting out in this field of study, I found it very helpful, and I'm sure others will!

Throughout history men have molded their environment to express or to symbolize ideas -- power, order, comfort, harmony, pleasure, mystery. The means by which this has been achieved have varied in scale and composition, from small gardens to complete cities, but it is Geoffrey and Susan Jellicoe's distinction to have realized that they are manifestations of a single process, and to have linked them all together. With 734 illustrations and six maps.

5 out of 5 stars Ever made pens ? You need this book even if you have........2007-05-20

He explains things that make your pens unique and different. It's nice to have pens everyone wants in your pocket!

      2 out of 5 stars Just Ok.......2005-09-07

The book does contain a lot of pens that are unusual; however, I wanted more information about turning small coves or other decorations. I also wanted some unusual design ideas - not just using different wood or putting in blocks of different wood, but designing the pen itself. Making it easier to hold or write with or changing the balance or length etc for the purpose of improving the product, not just the look.

Anyway, the book does have a lot of pens displayed and gives the pen turner a lot of ideas about changing the look by changing the wood and how the wood is cut and glued together. The key is using different materials for the pen itself.

I have just started a small pen company and this book has helped my considerable. Various well illustrated and easy to follow. It is an asset to my work.

4 out of 5 stars View Camera - A guide to Photographic art .......2007-05-17

I thought this book was just about excellent in its thoroughness for informing the reader how view cameras work. There are lots of photographs displayed as examples of what the author is discussing at the time. This book is excellent for those either just getting into view camera photography, or, like me, interested in moving into that area of the art. I am a digital photographer, and have been since the early days of digital, but have been drawn to medium and large format work because of their reliance upon the shooter's eye and the absolute skill required of the shooter. Anyone can point and shoot a picture, but it takes intimate knowledge of the camera's capabilities and the patience to move the photograph from the mind's eye to the camera's eye. The quality of large format is unsurpassed, and ught to be around for a long time. Kudo's for the author for this instructional, yet inspirational book on view camera photography.

4 out of 5 stars Great for starting in Large Format Photography.......2006-11-10

The only reason I gave this a 4 star instead of five is that it doesn't cover digital backs. That said I guess this was written a few years ago before the digital revolution came on so strong. I had some information on large format cameras because I took the NYIP correspondence course and knew a little about them, but wanted to know things like how to load film in them, which the NYIP course didn't cover. He went into how the tilt and rise adjustments can make your photography like no other camera can. I found this book very complete and is a great book to find out if LF is for you. I also bought the book Large Format Nature Photography and that does go into digital a little, however he doesn't think much of it so maybe that is why this author left it out. I don't think you would be disappointed with this book.

5 out of 5 stars The best intro to LF .......2006-05-12

This book is very well organized, clearly written. Everything you need to know to start to LF Photography is there, even the zone system. But I believe it's not only a novice's handbook, it may be very useful even for experienced photographers.
I liked the 2nd section where LF images, of super quality, are explained in a detailed manner.
Buy this book, you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars A little bit of a lot of things in a small book.......2006-02-24

This short book contains more than enough information for the large format novice to get started. From pictures showing effects of all the movements, to instructions on film handling and processing, to basic background on the Zone system, and finally many example photos, there's a lot of substance here. I needed a couple of re-readings to "get" some of the sections. The pages on the Zone system are the best introduction I've seen in print. The "expose for the shadows" mantra of the Zone system finally made sense after this explanation. There aren't many books about LF cameras, but this is the one to get.

4 out of 5 stars Good book to start learning with, needs updating.......2006-01-04

I've been curious about these cameras for some time and saw this book recommended on a photographer's website so I bought it.
I found it to be written more for someone who is already a photographer. The total novice will need more information, this book isn't a do it all text book.
There's quite a bit of information on the types of view cameras, the film and lenses. The reader will also see many examples of photographs, some info on technique and how to work the various cameras (and their various parts).
I think it probably is a good book for the trained photographer, I wish it had more information for a near total novice such as myself.
This is a 2002 edition so no doubt some of the film information is out of date, there's nothing about digital photography. No bibliography or resource guide of any sort.

2 out of 5 stars This Book Needs Updating or Another Publisher.......2007-02-24

This 7th Edition was published in 1999, but a good bit of the material seems to date from an earlier era. Remarks about 35mm photography, for example, refer to a level of technology that prevailed much longer ago. The photographs (none in color) are very, very dated in style (were they made in East Germany?), and in fact many of them are held over from the 1st edition (1967). Worse, the pictures are disturbingly bizarre and creepy. I ripped page 78 out of the book to avoid having to see it again. This may the most comprehensive work available on the subject, but let's hope the 8th edition is a thorough revision - and please include a few marvelous color landscapes and fine B&W portraits that are the reasons we love the LF format.... and lose those awful distorted photographs of 1950s mannequins. Luckily, though, a lot of things about view cameras are the same as they have always been, so the basic content of this book remains altogether usable.

      3 out of 5 stars Too complete.......2005-02-12

I probably found this book too complete; sure Prof. Stroebel gives all concepts for large format photography, but in my opinion all these concepts are put in the book one near the other without a logical education steps for the reader. So in my opinion if you already have got those concepts you will sure understand them, but if you don't know those concepts, you will have a lot of difficulties to learn them by this book.

      5 out of 5 stars THE authority........2004-06-12

This is THE reference standard for view camera photography. Prof. Strobel fully explains the different types of view cameras and how to best take advantage of the bellows and various camera movements. This book first appeared in 1967 and has only gotten better with each printing. Prof. Strobel was one of my professors at RIT 30 years ago and I still find myself using his excellent book as a reference.

5 out of 5 stars The "Complete" book on photogrpahy.......2004-04-24

View Camera Technique is a fantastic, all encompassing book covering not only view cameras, but all aspects of photography. Everything you've ever wanted to know is in this book. It will be a reference book that I will pull off the shelf for years and years. Well done and well worth the price!

      5 out of 5 stars Required reading.......2000-07-31

This is THE work on view cameras. Probably the most comprehensive single-volume work, it should be required reading for everybody.

It does not cover all the latest models (use the internet for that) but view cameras have not changed fundamentally in decades. The work covers all basic and intermediate topics, as well as many advanced techniques.

A book to read and re-read several times.

From the author: The Mongols conquered Inner Asia, China, Russia, and much of the Middle East, creating the largest empire of all time. But they failed to take Syria, despite efforts continuing for over half a century. They could not overcome the resistance of the Mamluks, slave-soldiers who dominated the government and army of Egypt. In Mongols and Mamluks: The Mamluk-Ilkhanid War, 1260-1281, a work of meticulous and masterful scholarship, Dr. Reuven Amitai-Preiss studies the first part of this long war in detail, and attributes the Mamluks' success to their morale and determination, the leadership of Baybars (the Mamluk ruler, 1260-77), the failure of Mongol-Crusader cooperation, enlargement of the Mamluk army, and the distraction of the Mongols by internecine wars. The reviewer, reasserting views questioned by Dr. Amitai-Preiss, opines that while these factors - except perhaps that involving the Crusaders - were essential, they were not sufficient. Although the Mamluks won all the battles during the period under study, 1260-81, they subsequently, in 1299, lost a major engagement and, in Dr. Amitai-Preiss' description, "fled the battlefield in complete disarray." Despite this victory, the Mongols had then to evacuate Syria, not because of Mamluk or other pressures, but because Syria lacked pasture and water sufficient to the strategic and logistical needs of the big, high-horsepower army essential to Mongol conquest.

                                  Book Description

Synaesthesia is a confusion of the senses, whereby stimulation of one sense triggers stimulation in a completely different sensory modality. A synaesthete might claim to be able to hear colours, taste shapes, describe the colour, shape, and flavour of someone's voice, or music, the sound of which looks like 'shards of glass'. Throughout history, many notable artists and writers have claimed to suffer from synaesthesia, including, Arthur Rimbaud, Wassily Kandinsky, Vladimir Nabakov, and David Hockney. The condition remains as controversial now as when first brought to the public eye many years ago - one notable scientist dismissing it as mere 'romantic neurology.' In Synaesthesia: the strangest thing, a world authority on synaesthesia takes us on a fascinating tour of this mysterious condition, looking at historical incidences of synaesthesia, unraveling the theories for the condition, and additionally, examining the claims to synaesthesia of the likes of Rimbaud, Baudelaire, and others. The result is an exciting, yet scientific account of an incredible condition - one that will tell us of a world rich with the most unbelievable sensory experiences. From the foreword by Simon Baron-Cohen, University of Cambridge '...Aside from inspiring fellow researchers, this book will do much to educate the general public about the important but often overlooked point that we do not all experience this universe in the same way. For the most part, synaesthetes would not wish to be free of their synaesthesia and if anything feel somewhat sorry for the rest of us as we go about our unisensual existence. My guess is that John Harrison's valuable book will ring a colourful bell for many people who until now did not realize that their experience had a name, and who will now be able to identify themselves with like-minded others. For all these reasons, this is quite a book.'

2 out of 5 stars Synaesthesia: The Strangest Thing.......2004-01-20

This book was more of an "Introduction to Everything" textbook than what it was supposed to be about...Intro to Psychology, Intro to Genetics, Intro to Statistics, Intro to Neuroscience...The topics may have been somewhat interesting at times, but not necessary to understanding Synesthesia. He certainly hopped, skipped, and jumped all over the place.
