Book Description
As the outward and visible symbol of Islam, mosques can be found in all parts of the modern world. The mosque remains central to Islam, serving as the focal point for Muslim communities around the globe. This book, with contributions by sixteen eminent scholars, traces the history and development of the mosque since its origins in Medina and Mecca in the time of the Prophet Muhammad, explaining its traditional religious and teaching role in Muslim society as well as its architectural and decorative features. In the course of its spread from its origins in Arabia, Islam often took over and adapted existing places of worship and styles of building as it gained a foothold from Spain and sub-Saharan Africa to China and Indonesia. The development of the mosque and its architecture is presented region by region, taking into account local building material, climatic factors, and craft skills, as well as major historical events such as the rise of the Ottoman and Mughal Empires. The physical form of the mosque is analyzed and illustrated with plans, elevations, and photographs, and its modern role as a religious and social institution is reviewed in the light of political developments. Contemporary mosques worldwide are discussed in a separate chapter, encompassing both those built by leading Muslim architects such as Abdel Wahid el-Wakil and Hassan Fathy and those built by Western architects.Richly illustrated with material drawn from a wide range of sources, this book provides comprehensive coverage of the architecture of the mosque, and it serves as an invaluable guide to an understanding of the mosque's role in Muslim society and culture throughout the world. With texts by Mohammed Arkoun, Mohammad Al-Asad, Antonio Fernández-Puertas, Martin Frishman, Oleg Grabar, Perween Hasan, Mark Horton, Hasan-Uddin Khan, Do~gan Kuban, Luo Xiaowei, Gülru Neçipoglu, Bernard O'Kane, Hugh O'Neill, Labelle Prussin, Ismail Serageldin, and Wheeler M. Thackston. 378 illustrations and photographs, 170 in color.

REALLY GOOD........2006-03-29
THIS BOOK HAS REALLY NICE PHOTOS OF DIFFERENT MOSQUES IN THE WORLD OF ISLAM. MOST OF WHICH ARE VERY BEAUTIFUL. ONE CAN SORT OF EXPERIENCE THE PASSION THAT THE PEOPLE MUST HAVE FOR THEIR RELIGION AND LIFESTYLE BY VIEWING THE ARCHITECTURAL BEAUTY OF THESE MOSQUES.
good but could be even better.......2004-05-07
The title is right and the books gives you a lot of not very deep information. But good as kind of catalogue. Authors missed a lot of regions. They took only well known to westeners. Somw great monuments are missed as well. But in general I would recommend to buy it for people who are interested in architecture and/or Islamic culture. Good photos.
The Mosque.......2001-07-23
On opening "The Mosque", most readers are likely to wonder that such a book has not been attempted earlier, for the topic is so obviously suitable for comparative study. The editors and their fourteen collaborators explain the mosque as an expression of Islam, analyse the characteristic styles of nine regions ranging from West Africa to China, and then report on the contemporary scene.
The last topic may be the most original and important, for Westerners are far more familiar with the celebrated mosques of the pre-modern period than with those of the twentieth century. Oleg Grabar and Mohammed Arkoun provide typically brilliant insights while Khan surveys the architectural variances ranging from the pseudo-classicism of the Islamic Center Mosque in Washington, D.C. to the astonishing modernism of the Sherefuddin Mosque in Bosnia.
Too often, in a specialized field such as Middle Eastern studies, a reviewer finds himself lamenting the excessive prices of books. How refreshing, then, to be able to compliment Thames and Hudson for including 378 illustrations, 170 of them in color, and yet charging very little more than the average scholarly book. This pricing decision brings The Mosque within the means of individual purchasers-and even pressures them to buy the book to prove that moderate prices do in fact lead to larger sales.

An elementary text on basic drawing shapes.......2007-04-12
"Learn to Draw Now"
by D. C. Dubosque
"There's no reason to go through life saying, "I can't draw!"--from the cover of "Learn to Draw Now"
This book would fall into the classification of Drawing-For-The-Absolute-Beginner. I do not want to be unkind to this book, for it is a nice set of lesson materials on working with the basic shapes. Author D. C. DuBosque covers this basic material and covers it well. For example, the author covers elementary perspective so well that any beginner could acquire sound knowledge very quickly.
The book covers elementary lighting and shading with a nice introduction to techniques that work. The books is very affordable and it is a good buy, especially for those who are frustrated and want another book covering the basics.
Another thing to admire about this book is that it avoids using an excess of wordy text. There is brief instruction and good illustration. Author D. C. DuBosque could expand this book I think, into sections that move beyond the elementary. The author's grasp of how to write a book specifically for discouraged beginners is evident.
This book has no instruction concerning figure drawing, but for a concise book of 64 pages it is okay. I think it is just the sort of thing that a parent might want to introduce a child to basic drawing, or that an adult might use for self-teaching; but the student will soon find himself needing still more books.
Learn to sketch.......2000-07-06
This book is somewhat mistitled. Learn to sketch would be better. Very good introduction that will have you sketching the basic shapes and having fun with it. He has cool little rules (he calls them strategies) that he hammers home. He will state a strategy on page 3 and then just when you have forgotten it he will tell you to draw something and use "strategy number 1." You scratch your head then start flipping pages back to see what the rule was. But next time you read a strategy YOU MEMORIZE IT so that you don't have to keep flipping. That is exactly his plan of course. I like this book - give it a try.

Customer Reviews:
This is an excellent starter set of drawing materials & instruction book.......2006-07-27
General's Learn to Draw Now! (Graphite & Charcoal Pencil Technique) by General Pencil Co.
I found one of theses boxed sets in a Hobby Lobby. For a modest price you get:
2 charcoal pencils, 2 graphite pencils, etc, a sharpener, erasor, small drawing pad and....
... a nice booklet covering:
Light & Shadow, Stroke & Texture, Composition, Perspective, Still Life, Landscape, Animals, "Draw What You See" Drawing the Human Figure, and what for me is the greatest surprise of all, CARTOONING. (any kid would just love this!)
This is really a great buy, because the books is really packed with good basic information, and it works, because it does not overstep its boundary. It will work well for a beginner. It is great especially for children or beginning adults who want to try drawing out before spending serious money for books and art materials. The booklet will give the student a chance to grasp basic concepts before moving on to books of greater depth.
Get this set for a winter day, a rainy day, or for a weekend indoors and someone is going to be very excited. I saw right away that the booklet has a lot of the basic information that I demand in "adult-sized" drawing books.
An insult to intelligence.......2006-06-20
Can a 20 sheet pad, six pencils,an eraser, a sharpener and a TWENTY FIVE page book teach anyone to draw?
This is all you get when you buy this kit. As everything comes packed in a box, carefully wrapped in cellophane, there's no way one can know in advance the "book" is only 25 pages long.
What is it that certain companies don't do in order to sell their stuff?

How to capture water in all its forms as the subject in nature photos
Technical and artistic advice from an acclaimed nature photographer
Water is often the most dramatic element in a landscape reflections on a still pond, waves along a rocky coastline, mist shrouding a forest clearing, ice coating the branches of a tree. But capturing water on film can be a challenge. Look over the shoulder of an expert as she shows how to recognize great water shots and realize them on film. In clear, detailed text and a wealth of color photos, Heather Angel covers equipment and technique and presents a gallery of her most stunning scenes.
Customer Reviews:
Not "All Wet".......2005-02-18
This book takes a slightly different approach from most nature photography books. Rather than attempt to cover the entire range of nature photography, Angel focuses on just one aspect of the environment, water, but she views it in all its forms and she looks at other subject matter that interacts with water.
She starts the book with a rather general discussion of the photography of water, including equipment, films, lighting and exposure. The reader who is already a nature photographer will probably find that the equipment he or she already owns is just fine for the task at hand, although there are a few things the author suggests adding to the water photographer's tool box that one might not have considered.
Next the author provides a gallery of her own work that is both inspirational and instructive. This is followed by chapters on water in its various forms: calm water, moving water, frozen water and water vapor. These chapters are chock full of useful tips. However they come at you so fast that you probably won't remember them all. Instead, the photographer would be wise to review an applicable chapter before going out and shooting in one of these environments.
Finally she mentions several kinds of photography that couldn't be neatly categorized into a prior chapter, like water and wildlife, water abstracts and close-ups.
The book is illustrated with the author's excellent pictures, and in each case she tells you what influenced her to approach the subject in a particular way. She does not dwell on questions like exposure. Instead the book is aimed primarily at intermediate to advanced photographers who do not expect a quick solution to problems but are happy to accept a few suggestions.
Unfortunately the book, published in 1999, makes no reference to digital photography. In fact, a good deal of material deals with the problems of film. While a competent digital photographer can make the translation to the digital world, much of the film talk will just be excess material to digital camera owners. I look forward to a digital edition of this book.
I was interested in this book because I've noticed that certain of my pictures of water needed improving. I didn't get a simple answer to solving my problem. However, I felt the author pointed me in the right direction and that she made me aware of approaches to water photography that I had not considered.
How to look at photographs of Water.......2000-08-09
This book contains some nice photographs of water-based landscapes, but teaches little about technique, composition, shutter speed etc. for photographing water.
Living close to the beach and waterfalls, I was somewhat disapointed in the content. Too much of the early chapters were taken up with general photographic principles and not enough specifics were provided on the actual subject - how to photograph water. Good pictures, but if you are looking for a comprehensive instructional source, this is not it.
Good for bookshelf, not for learners.......2000-08-05
First of all, I never understood why the name of the book is "How To ....". All you get here some nice and spectacular pictures which contain some sort of water. This book never explained how to photograph various styles like stucco effect, rococo or cloudy effects. What are suitable film speed, shutter speed and weather condition required for a particular style. All you get here are what camera, what lens and what film used for the pictures. For taking water pictures, especially moving water, the most important thing is shutter speed. Choosing the shutter speed makes the style. Surprisingly the writer ignored it. If you want to get a book with beautiful pictures from all over the world, go ahead and buy it. If you want to learn HOW TO photograph water, DO NOT buy this book.
Informative and beautifully photographed.......2000-01-05
This book is a must for any budding landscape photographer with an interest in capturing that most elusive of elements- water. Angel includes expert tips on photographing water in all its forms- liquid, frozen, mist, with wildlife, abstract & macro and is superbly presented and photographed to boot. This volume is destined to become a well thumbed fixture on my bookshelf

Book Description
Nineteenth-century newspaper editor Jane Grey Swisshelm (1815-1884) was an unconventionally ambitious woman. While she struggled in private to be a dutiful daughter, wife, and mother, she publicly critiqued and successfully challenged gender conventions that restricted her personal behavior, limited her political and economic opportunities, and attempted to silence her voice.
As the owner and editor of newspapers in Pittsburgh; St. Cloud, Minnesota; and Washington, D.C.; and as one of the founders of the Minnesota Republican Party, Swisshelm negotiated a significant place for herself in the male-dominated world of commerce, journalism, and politics. How she accomplished this feat; what expressive devices she used; what social, economic, and political tensions resulted from her efforts; and how those tensions were resolved are the central questions examined in this biography. Sylvia Hoffert arranges the book topically, rather than chronologically, to include Swisshelm in the broader issues of the day, such as women's involvement in politics and religion, their role in the workplace, and marriage. Rescuing this prominent feminist from obscurity, Hoffert shows how Swisshelm laid the groundwork for the "New Woman" of the turn of the century.
Customer Reviews:
You can judge this book by its cover.......2003-11-20
I confess I was drawn to this book by a)the inside jacket cover photo of the exceptionally attractive young female memoirist who seemed posessed of an enigmatic, almost haunted look, and b) the mysterious suggestiveness of the book title and partially obscured cover photo -- redolent of dark family revelations -- and I was not disappointed. 30-year old Jill Christman writes a searing account of harrowing family traumas, including her own recovered memory of childhood sexual abuse, the tragic auto accident that killed the young man who was the love of her life, her older brother's being nearly scorched to death by a freak shower incident, her near life-long estrangement from her father, and the wretched death in jail of a beloved uncle incarcerated for growing marijuana. All of these dark tales are leavened with ironic humor and described in superb detail. For me, the near 20 page account of Jill's preparation of a melted cheese sandwich for her frail grandmother, the ingestion of which led to her not untimely demise, was the piece de resistance.
excellent work.......2003-02-28
If you have not read this book I suggest you do. I laughed out loud, cried, and was at a loss for words with this book. I really liked how the author used the nameless voice to bring out the questions and answers from the inside. I love to read and this is by far the best memoir that I've read.
Simply breath taking.......2003-02-27
I laughed out loud, cried, and was at a lost for words while reading this book. The element that sticks out is the second voice that appears throughout the piece. I encourage everyone who loves to read to read this book. I couldn't put it down once I started. I read it in one day. Job well done Professor Christman!
A good read!.......2003-01-12
This book is a perfect example of the possibilities of creative nonfiction. Like the originator of the personal essay, Montaigne, Jill Christman chooses her self as her subject-the "I"-yet, in doing so, is really writing about all of us-the "we"-of humanity. Like more modern writers-Woolf, Stein, Eliot and so on-Christman also brings to her work a richness of prose, an understanding of arrangement and construction, and the confidence to employ such techniques as flashbacks, photo collages, and intertextuality. As a teacher of literature, I enjoyed this book for all of the reasons listed above. As a person who simply loves to read, I enjoyed this book because it is a GOOD READ! Sometimes sad, sometimes happy, sometimes terrible, sometimes funny-this book consistently had me turning the pages. I certainly recommend it.
Darkroom: A Family Exposure -- A Poigniant Narrative.......2002-11-08
Christman does a remarkably good job of solving the problems of telling about parts of her life and family in a creative new way. Like an outstanding photographic exposure, she brackets her frames by under exposing and over exposing in all the right places until she comes up with that perfect balance between light and dark, with remarkable shadow detail in the final image. She dodges and burns, weaves in and out, and through, the painful events in her life by the use of crisp transitions, and, in many cases, unexpected humor/irony. The accounts of her life experiences are compelling -- almost too much to take in even at proper viewing distances, but her clever use of photographic imagery and her references to technical aspects of the art during some of these transitions seem to require use of both sides of the readers' brain -- making the trauma somewhat easier to allow in. The clear presense of Christman's soul in this book keeps the reader engaged in a way that makes her/him feel as though s/he is there with her. So few people are willing to risk this exposure -- to allow others to see past a seemingly "circle of confusion" to the true image on the other side of the lens without hiding behind "fiction."
Christman, a courageous woman, is also a master of her craft.
Customer Reviews:
Good read but a little long.......2002-12-15
This book delivers more details on the battles than what was available in Jack Hurst's book. It has little about Forrest's personal life (none after the war as it was written in 1866). At close to 700 pages it gets a little too detailed in places but is overall a very good book.
A FANTASTIC read!.......2001-01-06
I have read many different books written by people that lived in the era of the War Between the States, and this one has to be one of the best that I have read on one of the most audacious leaders that came out of the war on either side. I THOROUGHLY enjoyed reading this book. There were plenty of maps, and since the book was written under the watchful care of Nathan himself from his notes during the war, I believe it is one of the most complete works of this nature. I highly recommend the book to anyone. It is not just another boring read!
detailed account.......2000-01-15
A meticulous and detailed account of the military operations that Gen. Forrest was involved in, showing the skill he had in combat, and the man that he was. Also provides short insights into many of the men that served under him. At times, I wished there were more (and more detailed) maps, so that I could follow the movements of Forrest's Cavalry and their enemy more precisely. Provides fair treatment of analysis of both sides of the war, as well as some feelings and evidence that dispute some of the myth and legend surrounding Gen. Forrest. I would suggest re-reading the introduction after you finish reading the book, as it works as a good post-commentary. This book is excactly what I was looking for to learn about cavalry operations during the Civil War.
An excellent resource of the distinguished cavalry general........1998-07-20
The book was written for the most part by a contemporary of General Forrest's, himself a Confederate general. Nathan Bedford Forrest read the proofs, suggested some changes, and approved of the product. It is easily read and gives great insight into this greatest of all cavalry wizards.

Book Description
The Jewish experience on Polish lands is often viewed backwards through the lens of the Holocaust and the ethnic rivalries that escalated in the period between the two world wars. Critical to the history of Polish-Jewish relations, however, is the period prior to World War I when the emergence of mass electoral politics in Czarist Russia led to the consolidation of modern political parties. Using sources published in Polish, Yiddish, Hebrew, and Russian, Joshua D. Zimmerman has compiled a full-length English-language study of the relations between the two dominant progressive movements in Russian Poland. He examines the Polish Socialist Party (PPS), which sought social emancipation and equal civil rights for minority nationalities, including Jews, under a democratic Polish republic, and the Jewish Labor Bund, which declared that Jews were a nation distinct from Poles and Russians and advocated cultural autonomy. By 1905, the PPS abandoned its call for Jewish assimilation, and recognized Jews as a separate nationality. Zimmerman demonstrates persuasively that Polish history in Czarist Russia cannot be fully understood without studying the Jewish influence and that Jewish history was equally infused with the Polish influence.

An excellent reference to start your research from.......1999-08-31
This book is a very good reference for those who believe that scientific computing needs a little bit more of software engineering practice. It provides a collection of papers from the major researchers in this area, with interesting examples of real applications. It is not a text book for undergrads, but it provides good pointers to the main subjects, from where the reader can go by him/herself. I have been following HPC research for eight years and OOD for three, and this is for me the best reference in this subject so far.
