Book Description

The world of work refuses to stand still: new technologies have a huge impact on office design and now that a great many employees have the freedom to do their work anywhere - on the road, at home, with clients - the general role of the office has altered significantly. The projects that make up The Other Office identify those offices that keep abreast of the rapid pace of change and, more importantly, set the pace. They achieve their goals in unique and creative ways. Their common denominator is that special quality with which they transcend the mundane requirements of planners' programs, a creative synthesis of the intuitive and the analytical, bringing a new sensibility to the workplace.

A good basic classic book. Every watercolorist must have in their library

5 out of 5 stars Not your ordinary watermedia book.......2006-03-16

This book is not for beginners, but if you are searching for inspiration to move beyond more conventional approaches to painting in watercolor and acrylic, this might be a book worth owning. Edward Betts' observations are well-grounded in his academic experiences (at the U. of Illinois, where he went to grad school and later taught painting for many years, and at Yale, where he studied art history). As a result, he gently but insistently nudges his readers away from more traditional sorts of painting methods (although he still finds some value in doing that sort of painting from time to time, and he provides examples of such work). Betts advocates a much more experimental, abstract, painterly and, therefore, a more personal approach. Some readers may find that his painting style is not all that much to their liking, but if they keep an open mind, they still should find value in the ideas about painting that Betts articulates so well. These ideas have been around for quite a while now, but he does a fine job of explaining them to those readers who still think of painting in more traditional, illustrative terms. Betts challenges such painters to create art that is distinctive and inspired, rather than imitative and predictable.

What a wonderful book.
Better than a class.
Not a step by step kind of book, but one to give you good solid art
methods so you can explore in your own style.
It opened my mind.
I haven't been this excited about my work in ages.
Thank you Edward Betts for sharing your wisdom.

This book is an inspiration for any artists interested in mixed media and developing their skills towards non-representational painting. It is very well written and aimed at the more advanced painters in water media. Edward Betts uses his own paintings for illustrating and inspiration. This is one book that is a must for your studio bookshelf - borrowing it from the library for a quick read will not satisfy the need to return again and again to its inspirational pages.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL ADDITION TO YOUR ART LIBRARY.......2007-09-15

This work has been around since around 1993 in its revised edition. This is one of the better books I have found for those who want to push their skills and test their curiosity. Edward Betts has given us some real challenges here. The book covers such areas as sketching on location, sketching in the stuido, sketching from photographs, transparent water color techniques, mixed media, painting with a brush and even delves into the subject of abstract techniques. It should be noted that this work is not ment for the beginner and is, at times, quite complex. That being said, I cannot help but feel that those at any level can and will learn from using this work. I did enjoy the author's ability to go from water color to acrylic, covering both areas quite well. As with all art books, no single book can do it all, but, as with others, this is a great tool when used with your present knowledge and other works. This is a book I have enjoyed over the years and still use it. Recommend highly.

IF YOU LIKE EXPERIMENTING, THIS BOOK WILL GIVE ME SO SO MANY WAYS TO USE WATERCOLORS, ACRYLIC AND OTHER MEDIUMS TOO. I REALLY ENJOYED USING THE IDEAS AND DETAILED WAYS TO CREATE NEW WAYS TO PAINT.

Book Description

In 1962, a young John Cohen and the young songwriter Bob Dylan went to Cohen's East Village loft and rooftop for a few hours to make some photos in "a moment of invention…without planning, and with the freedom that comes from uncertainty," recalls Cohen. The never-before-published, black-and-white photographs in Young Bob: John Cohen's Early Photographs of Bob Dylan reveal the soon-to-be-legendary musician of the cusp of fame, just before the release of his revolutionary self-titled first album. "These are pictures from a more innocent time at the beginning of Bob Dylan's career," Cohen recalled. "his is what he might have looked like when he first arrived in New York…. the making of these photographs was quite naïve. We weren't into creating a persona for Bob. I was more interested in documenting what was before the camera, and what I was seeing wasn't so clear. The session was just a free-flowing pursuit of picture making and taking poses. We didn't know what he was going to look like." To complement the images, Cohen has painstakingly transcribed and edited forgotten radio interviews that aired between 1961 and 1963. The interviews conjure up voices from the past, where you can hear a youthful Dylan joking and quipping with WBAI's Cynthia Gooding, WNYC's Oscar Brand, and WFMT's Studs Terkel. With a flourish of color, Cohen's recently rediscovered Ektachromes shot in 1970 for the album "Self Portrait" appear at the end of Young Bob. These finely constructed "self portraits," art directed by Dylan himself, offer a contrast to the uninhibited loft and rooftop photos and serve as a reminder that just a few years later the famed persona of Dylan had truly been formed and that the young Bob we caught a glimpse of on Cohen's rooftop was now and forever gone.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb photos & splendid edition.......2006-02-28

I bought this book together with Douglas R. Gilbert's 'Forever Young' and they are both interesting portraits of Bob Dylan as a young artist. Yet taken as a book, John Cohen's is in a different league altogether. The paper on which this book is printed is wonderful (compared with the cheap seeming one used for 'Forever Young') and the printing of both B&W and colour images is first-rate.

As accompanying text there are three transcribed radios interviews with Bob Dylan which are contemporaneous to the photographs. This is also a winning point of this book; having both the photographs and the young Dylan speak for themselves.

Ever since the conclusion of Ranma 1/2, Rumiko Takahashi's many fans have been eagerly awaiting her next long, serialized project. The wait is over with the first volume of Inu-Yasha. The story begins in Feudal Japan (technically, the Warring States period of the Muromachi era) where a mythical creature named Inu-Yasha, half dog and half boy, pillages a small town in search of a magical jewel. He is stopped by the village priestess who takes the jewel with her to the afterlife. Cut to modern times where Kagome (a splitting image of the village priestess) finds herself lost in a time portal and runs into Inu-Yasha himself. Her reaction is priceless: "Is he a demon or a junior high school kid?" This is the magic of Rumiko Takahashi--she has woven an intriguing historical fantasy that is filled with horror, humor, and romance in a way that most people would not think possible. --Jim Pascoe

Book Description

In this installment from the world's most popular female comic artist, a local temple erupts into battle and a de facto water god armed with an incredibly powerful magic spear attempts to destroy the surrounding village. Kagome and Inu-Yasha must find the real water god in time to stop the destruction. Then Kagome discovers that Sango's supposedly dead brother, Kohaku, has decimated another village.

Inuyasha (1997.)

INTRODUCTION:
When I was younger, I was a big-time anime fan. Although little of the Japanese animation was being shown on American TV back then, what little I saw, I liked. It fast became apparent that the Japanese had a much better way of creating animation - one that fused seriousness and comedy perfectly, and one that would appeal to people of all ages - NOT just children. And in recent years I had pretty much abandoned my interest in anime altogether. However, I had always remained curious, and in the more recent years I had heard of a series called Inuyasha that was constantly getting praised. I watched a few episodes, and it wasn't hard to see why. The series was created by Rumiko Takahashi, creator of Ranma 1/2 (a series that remains VERY popular.) Although I liked the episodes I saw on TV, they started somewhere in the middle of things, and I wanted to get the story from the beginning. Since the episode DVDs were too pricey, I opted for the manga (comic/graphic novel) version (most animes are based on manga.) Read on for my review.

STORYLINE OVERVIEW:
Inuyasha has one of those stories that's EXTREMELY tough to put into words, but I'll try my best. Bear with me here, people. Several centuries ago in Japan, there were ongoing wars, between humans and demons alike. In modern-day japan, a girl named Kagome lives on a shrine with her family, and one day one of the demons from the past pulls her down the shrine's well. The well is a linking point between the modern age and the age in the distant past, in which wars were raging constantly. She is revealed to be the reincarnation of a priestess who, several years earier, killed an evil half-demon called Inuyasha. But, through several odd twists of fate, she is forced to join forces with the resurrected Inuyasha, to recover the shards of a sacred jewel, which could be used to greatly increase the powers of and demon, good or evil, who gets their hands on them. Although reluctant to help at first, Kagome finally decides to help Inuyasha, realizing that the well is the warp point between times, she doesn't want to put her family in immediate danger. (I KNOW, that's not the best possible summary. If you want a better one, visit one of the various fansites.)

OPINIONS:
Overall, I am very satisfied with this series - it's been a LONG time since I liked an anime and/or manga this much. Rumiko Takahashi has once again succeded beautifully, combining seriousness with comedy, and creating an excellent storyline fusing history and fantasy alike. It was great to finally get the proper introduction to the series. I urge you to get the proper introduction yourself, as well. If you just start watching/reading somewhere in the middle of the series, you may be left dazed and confused and judge the series based on an awkward first impression. DON'T make that mistake.

CURRENT EDITION:
The edition of this manga currently available is actually a second edition - the first edition is now out of print and is no longer readily available. I'm VERY satisfied with the way the Inuyasha manga got ported to America. First and most importantly, it's uncensored. Many manga series get heavy editing when they get an American release, as do their anime counterparts. Another thing I am happy about is they "Americanized" the reading style, while at the same time staying true to the original projected vision. For those of you who don't know, the Japanese read from right to left, and sometimes mangas are ported in that fashion. Being an American, I'm used to reading from left to right, so I was glad to see that it was ported into English in a "left to right" reading style (and all of the images have been reversed to reflect the change and to stay true to the original vision.) Likewise, these graphic novels are almost two hundred pages each, and since each one costs less than ten bucks, they're a pretty good deal. Overall, it's great to see Inuyasha didn't butchered the way some series do.

OVERALL:
Inuyasha is the best anime/manga series to come along for me in a long time. It's not hard to see why so many people call it one of their favorites. I personally recommend the manga over the anime, since the manga came first and is, therefore, Takahashi's original vision. Likewise, the DVDs are kind of a rip-off pricewise. But whether you decide to do the anime, the manga, or both, you're likely to agree it's an excellent series.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Manga.......2005-05-07

"Inu-Yasha" has one of the best stories I've ever read. It starts off simply, maybe a bit generic. From there though, you get to know the characters, and you really do sympathize with them. The relationships between them are not rushed, and the romance is done very well. The story gets better in every volume, too.

Anyone who loves manga should try out Inu-Yasha. It's popular for a reason.

There is a little nudity, but it's not done in a sexual way. Still, it's not something for small children.

5 out of 5 stars A well that serves as a time machine? Pure Genius........2004-08-04

Honestly the first time I saw this anime on T.V., I was turned off by the whole crazy psychotic demon stuff. Then I decided to give this anime a chance, and after the first episode, I was hooked. The story is about a girl who falls into a well and she ends up in feudal Japan. Bizzare? Maybe at first, but after a while you'll say, wow that well gos great with the story.
So I decided to purchase the first volume of the manga, and now I will definately say, this is one of my most favorite series. The story involving and thrilling which also leaves for many unexpected events to happen where they end up fighting countless hordes of demons. All in all, this first volume of the manga will make you want to buy volume 2 of this great series.

1 out of 5 stars Beware of this book for kids.......2004-01-31

Violent, gruesome, nudity. Should be removed from the shelves. My 7 year old son told me he read one of these books that a friend in his second grade class brought in. I purchased a few books in the series and we reviewed one for content. I was horrified to see that it talked about murder, a person saves a bucket of human livers and has to move to another town because he has run out of victims. There were pictures of nude girls on a few of the pages. Although it says it is for Teen on the back cover- Young kids are reading these books. My nephews, who are teens, think these books are for young kids. Most teens are not interested in reading them. Which shows that these books although labeled for teens have a young child audience. I am bringing the books I purchased last night, back to the store this morning.

3 out of 5 stars Inuyasha is pretty darn good........2004-01-18

I ordered the first two of the series.
I was pleased with the fact that they were a pretty good length, but I'm still reeling over the cost!
American dollars are bad. Very bad. Am so broke *droops*.
I love the story very much however, and Inuyasha makes a most adorable villian/good-guy. (confusing isn't it?)
I have shared it with a few of my friends. (Trusted ones mind you. Sooooo expensive to replace!)
They had a lot of reactions ranging from:
*yoink* "I'll see you after Japanese" *runs off clutching book muttering 'My preciousssss'*
To:
"Oh, they aren't very good quality drawings, are they?" *gets head bashed in by me*
And even!:
*Opens first page* "That girl looks really mad. Who is she?"
"Oh! He's a guy??? Are you sure???"
Yes. That really happened. That particular person also mistook Sesshoumaru for a female but I can forgive her for that.
I'd love to buy the rest of the series, but I'm pretty darn sure that I can live without it until the prices go down. One day.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A summary, a reflection.......2006-03-13

The great essayist Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher wrote this last volume, starting in 1943 and then in the 1990's, when Parkinson's Disease began to make it impossible for her to speak, as a sort of summary of her writings. This book gives a lot of insight into MFK Fisher's life when she returned to the US from Europe, married again after her first husband's death. Some of the writing is familiar, subjects visited before such as her life in Europe, and some is quite new, if all you've read are her classic essays in "Serve it Forth", for example.

The Last House is one designed for her in Glen Ellen, California. In this house, she writes honestly of the ravages of age, incapacity, fright and regrets. It's brutally honest, as all her writing is. If you love the works of this author, this is a must-read.

4 out of 5 stars A sharp, unsparing honesty.......2004-02-11

These autobiographical essays can be returned to again and again for the beauty of the writing and the startling frankness of the writer. The earlier essays explore the experiences that shaped her - trips to her beloved France, caring for an aging and difficult father, lifelong regret over an impulsive rejection of her sister, musings on literary characters, minor thieving, incidents that retain their emotional charge over decades.

The second half of the book is a portrait of her own aging and increasing illness - her rages, fears and love of life. Whether baring her soul or keeping a whimsical distance, Fisher's writing has an immediacy that connects with the reader.

5 out of 5 stars brutally honest, reflections on ageing.......1998-09-21

I marveled at her honesty, such as resenting looking after an ageing father or her unsent, unsympathetic letter to an elderly friend, her frustration and rage at her own diminishing health and her observation that none of us is prepared for the inevitible process leading to death.

    Book Description

In this new work, historian David F. Schmitz analyzes what is arguably the most important event in the history of the Vietnam conflict. Schmitz situates the Tet Offensive in the context of American foreign policy and the state of the war up to 1968 while carefully considering the impact of the media on American public opinion. Through his up-to-date analysis of recently available sources, Schmitz works to dispel myths and clarify the central debates surrounding this pivotal event that brought an end to American escalation of the war and led to LBJ's decision to withdraw from the presidential race.

5 out of 5 stars Did the msm sink the US in Vietnam?.......2006-03-12

There's nothing like a well-researched, well-written book to equip people to understand history and to gain perspective on conventional wisdom. Schmitz addresses arguments that it was the media's portrayal of the Vietnam War that led to the US's first loss, and he decides that this was not the case. Using excellent research skills, exhaustive reading of available materials both primary and secondary (lots of notes, plus an annotated bibliography), Schmitz shows that Johnson and his advisors decided, in the weeks following the Tet 'victory' that despite the assurances of Westmoreland, et al, the war had lapsed into a stalemate. Even granting Westmoreland's request for another 200,000 troops could guarantee no foreseeable success. An excellent analysis of the effects of the Tet offensive on America and Sout Vietnam, plus a discussion of the Bretton Woods conference, the gold standard, and the effect of the protracted war on US domestic policy and global economic standing.

Part of a series, this book is terse and brief, yet thorough and persuasive.
