Customer Reviews:
A rare find.......2001-04-17
First off, I must admit that I do not own this book - yet. I picked it up at random at a friend's house or, more correctly, hoisted it up, as it is printed on good paper and is very thick. Once started, I could not leave it until the end. Most books of this nature do not appeal to me very much, because they only warrant a cursory paging-through. I am sure there are many excellent books of this genre, it is just my ignorance which prevents me from appreciating them. But this one is different. The selection of the photographs is such that the pictures are never boring, and the descriptions, in spite of, or perhaps because of, their brevity, contain a surprising amount of information, which encourages one to read more about the many different subjects touched upon. This is not just a book about houses, it is a book on which one could base a study of the Russian people in its entirety, such as their history and culture in all its forms. Definitely a book I am buying.
very touching!.......1999-02-05
For those who have been to Russia and Europe in the past, or lived there, this book highlights all beautiful details of Russia. I bought this book for my father years ago as a gift and later wanted to buy one for myself. I couldn't find it anywhere until I saw it here. I was in tears when I received it since this book has everything about the design and the heart of the country that I came to love and to know. Excellent photography!

Customer Reviews:
author makes it fun.......2007-09-08
One of the best things about this book, is that Ms. Black has a contagious sense of fun. She focuses on spontaneity rather than rigid outcome. She leads a reader through a series of techniques (sorry for the over-used word) that help discourage intellectual interference. Great book for doing, in addition to reading about, the craft. I go back to this book time and time again.
awesome!.......2007-08-11
This book really gets me going. I'm a beginner in painting 'cause I use different art media. But this book made it really easy for me to start in painting. I like EJ Black's ideas and techniques. Really good for beginners and act like a pro. I highly recommend this book for children and beginning adults!
Simply Inspiring!.......2002-12-08
This book has been a truly wonderful find! I enjoy the creative process, but watercolor has never been my strong suit. I purchased this book just a few days ago, and have already created several pieces of art that amaze even me! My intention in buying this book was less to make cards (though that's something I've long done) but more to use Elizabeth Joan Black's techniques in hopes of finding a new creative outlet. I definitely got that and more. Her book gives wonderful details, with colorful pictures that would help anyone achieve results they would be pleased with. I highly recommend this book for the novice to the experienced. It really is inspiring!

Book Description
Revealing the infinite variety of the "World's Hottest Woman" (Rolling Stone)
She's the hottest French export since Brigitte Bardot. She's graced the runways of Galliano and Gaultier and appeared on hundreds of magazine covers worldwide. And in a world of gaunt, underfed, pale models, she's a bodacious, curvy, voluptuous breath of fresh air. She's Laetitia Casta. Called "the sexiest model" by Details and "the most beautiful woman in the world" by Paris Match, Laetitia Casta is on her way to becoming the supreme supermodel of the decade.
Featuring the stunning, revealing, and erotic photography of Ritts and Isserman, Laetitia is filled with the most sensuous photographs ever taken of this modern-day Aphrodite. Complete with accompanying essays on Laetitia's world and her outlook on life, and including previously unpublished photographs and a full-color poster, Laetitia is the sexiest book in bookstores this year.
Already a frequent cover girl, Laetitia is the new face of L'Oreal and a featured model for the Victoria's Secret catalog. She has starred in ads for Chanel, Ralph Lauren, Isaac Mizrahi, and several Guess campaigns. She made her screen debut in this year's film Asterix and Obelix, with Gerard Depardieu, and she has appeared in three Sports Illustrated swimsuit issues.
Customer Reviews:
mostly fantasy.......2007-02-16
I recently asked a very reputable plastic surgeon in Atlanta if, in his professional opinion, he thought that Laetitia's breasts were real. After looking at her nude photos, he said that they were most likely NOT real. I always believed that they weren't. I have read in publications that she claims that they are. IT doesn't really matter, though. She'd be just as beautiful with smaller breasts. I suppose that money was spent on expensive implants to make her even more sensual (if she indeed has them).
Back in the late '90's, I was in awe of Miss Casta (along with most of the world). She seemed to good to be true. I love men, of course, but I was in awe of her beauty and eagerly purchased many magazines which featured her on the cover and/or inside. I poured over the pages of the Victoria's Secret catalogs which regularly featured her. She stood out among the rest. In fact, I adored her so much that I even bought this book. She is indeed a work of art and so is the photography contained in the book. I realize that the book is meant to portray her in a positive light...not only for her physical beauty but her inner beauty as well.
I have never seen Laetitia in any films. She must be about 30 by now. I often wonder why she has pretty much abandoned modeling. I don't agree with the comparisons to Raquel Welch and Sophia Loren. They have nothing on her.
Keep in mind that this book is fantasy. I realize that many folks don't want the ugly truth...they want a beautiful fantasy. Laetitia is a human being like the rest of us. I have no doubt that she is a beautiful person both inside and out; however, airbrushing, the right lighting, the right camera angles, a good boob job, and a deprivation diet (yes, DIET...no matter how much she claims she loves to eat because all models must weigh well below what is considered normal) do work wonders. So, I generously give it only four stars. I feel as if we've been lied to.
A Treasure Chest.......2006-01-27
I have had this book for years and I think it is a treasure. It has several pictures that span the career of Laetitia up to the publication date of 1999. The book mainly consists of fashion and glamour photos, but it has numerious covers as well as some personal photos. Laetitia also writes a brief intro to each section and she has some of her own art in the book. She has a very cheery and sunny personality! If you are a fan of Laetitia you will treasure this book as much as I do.
beautiful.......2004-02-07
This book let all my dreams come true. The best Laetitia pictures, her views on life/career, and what the designers think of her. This is the best book I have of art and she is indeed the best model ever. Everyone should be able to adleast see this book once in their lives to see what perfection is.
the most gorgeous of God's creation.......2004-02-03
A beautiful woman is God's ultimate creation and gift to mankind. Laetitia Casta stands above as the most gorgeous female of her generation. Only Raquel Welch of the last generation or Sofia Loren of the generation before that can challenge Laetitia as the most gorgeous woman since the invention of the photograph. I am not interested in Laetitia's inner beauty or her mind. I admire her for the work of art that she is. With the help of make-up artists and photographers, this book presents to us the ultimate beauty. Laetitia's physical beauty surpasses the art of a Rembrant, the music of Wagner, the poetry of Dante, or the sculpture of Michael Angelo.
intelligence.......2003-05-20
Laetitia has such a beautiful heart, I am so pleased to see that she hasnt changed such a positive oulook on life. Brilliant book, I almost love her body as much as she does.

Customer Reviews:
Hemingway.......2005-09-19
It is no secret that Ernest Hemingway went to Italy in 1918 with a volunteer ambulance unit, was wounded in the leg, and had an affair with one of the nurses (Agnes Von Kurowsky) while recovering in a hospital. (Many of the scenes in his A FAREWELL TO ARMS are based on these experiences.) This volume contains her diary and letters she wrote to him at the time (his letters to her are lost), as well as a few other pieces. One significant revelation is that it seems their relationship was platonic: when Agnes broke it off she said she felt more like "a mother than a sweetheart" (she was also 7 years older than he was). The letters reveal interesting insights into who Hemingway was at a time before the macho aura completely took over his personality. A so-so movie was based on this book.
You are so right: Dr. P. Verheyen.......2003-06-06
Its just really a deep analyse of the dream in Ernest his life.
I agree agree totally with Dr. Verheyen:
Hemingway and (the false) Agnes in projection of real life!.
Romance of oné site (Ernest Hemingway anyway).
I am doctorating in psychology in beautiful Rome: Italy.
I live back in New York City (after my doctorating?).
Psychologic proven!.......2002-07-13
As a Dr. in Psychology, I can antherstand Hemingway and obvious Agnes. I suppose this romance was to beautiful to hold stand!. Anyway I antherstand 1961( Ernest did suicide WITH Agnes her letters next to him) AFTER 4 TRYING? to forget Agnes! MARRIAGE'S. This prover real eternity love exists, only both have to FORGIVE, and that's the hard way (I do know personnell). They were really made for each other, sad, so sad: stubborn Ernie and WHY?. Dr. Patrick Verheyen (U.S. Graduated ;-).
ITALIAN.......2000-02-04
Please, does anyone knows if the book "Hemingway, in love and war" has been traslated in italian?. Thank you very much, Massimo.
Bittersweet Love Story that hit close to home:.......1999-08-24
After seeing the movie "In Love and War" with Sandra Bullock and Chris O'Donnell, I was left wanting to learn more of the events of this tragic love story. The book clued me in to the actual events that led to the affair and the events that occured afterwards and the truth was actually more tragic than the movie had let on. I was once involved in a romance with a much younger man, he was 18 and I was 24, and there was so much passion but eventually the fantasy fades and reality sets in and sometimes you make decisions that at the time seem like the most sane but later on wonder "what if....?" This book is for anyone who has ever loved and lost. A must read for every romantic.

Book Description
On July 14, 1895, Samuel Langhorne Clemens, fifty-nine years old and deeply in debt, boarded a night train to Cleveland, launching a performance tour designed to alleviate his financial woes, and, more importantly, resuscitate his alter ego, Mark Twain. The journey took him to Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, India, and South Africa, and led to the resurrection of Twain as a celebrity. Equal parts travelogue, social history, and biography, Around the World with Mark Twain paints a decidedly different portrait of Clemens: a more tragic, darker figure who faced financial ruin and personal loss throughout his life. Around the World with Mark Twain delights while deepening our understanding of this magnificent personality.
Customer Reviews:
Innocents in Twain.......2001-04-29
It was mere chance that my wife and I came to read this book. Previously our experience of Clemens/Twain was limited to films and television, both frequently the products of the producers rather than of Twain. We found Mr. Cooper's book to be absorbing. His narrative style is delightfully readable without inhibiting his attention to detail; in particular his comparisons between the conditions of then and now. We are indebted to this author for introducing us to the real Mark Twain.
A wonderful, leisurely read!.......2001-01-13
My wife and I both enjoyed following the author following in the footsteps of Mark Twain. We could easily imagine ourselves with the author, visiting exotic and not so exotic locales, both a century ago along with Mark Twain and one hundred years later with the author. The stories about Mark Twain and the stories told by Mark Twain were both very enjoyable and gave us a flavor of the time and a feeling for the complex man. The observations about the changes and similarities in the world over the last century were fascinating.
Poorly executed.......2001-01-01
The idea for this book was a good one. Unfortunately, Cooper has no sense of humor and little writing ability. I'm afraid I abandoned the journey in Australia.
Read Twain instead.......2000-09-24
This is a transparent attempt by an untalented writer to use Mark Twain's name to sell books. The book doesn't merit enough of my attention to write more.
When I was a kid Mark Twain . . ........2000-08-27
was a favorite author of mine. I bought the book based on the title alone thinking I would be riding through casinos and chasing women trying to amass a fortune that was lost. I was right, but not in the way I expected. The book takes you with Mark Twain but he is not the main character of the story. Mark Twain is a steamboat and you are left in the wake of his journeys to ponder what the world was like 100 years ago. What initially was a disappoint to me was quickly replaced by actually checking the facts that the author had written (okay I only checked a few) and enjoying a book that I think most would enjoy. The fifth star is not there because had I known what the book was about I probably wouldn't have bought it. Don't make that mistake if you enjoy Mark Twain, history or both.
Book Description
Practical, applicable, warm and honest, Empowered Parents: Putting Faith First is a Christian faith-based parenting guide for the real world of raising children, filled with both successes and challenges. Shape up with twelve godly characteristics and how to implement them within the family. It's the incredible, unexpected journey of parenting!
Customer Reviews:
A Gift to All Parents!.......2003-05-02
Lori and Becky use a solid faith-based framework in walking us through a practical approach to Christian parenting. Their book guides parents in their journey to raise children with a foundation of strong values. It is truly a gift to all parents!
Practical and "Real"!.......2003-04-26
This is a parenting book that works because of what it is NOT. Too often, parenting manuals are formula based...a "how-to" list of suggestions that will work if followed; only to bring the inevitable shame upon parents when they don't. Lori and Becky's book has a different approach The love they have for their own families is very apparent! The stories they share about their own families and heart-warming and humorous! They discuss real issues and decision-making skills without the formula based answers. Most importantly, the book incorporates the concepts of faith, grace, and prayer in the parenting process. It is a book that leaves one encouraged to carry out the great commission of Christian parenting!
A Must Have Parent Manual.......2003-04-10
"Empowered Parents" is an incredible book that every parent should own. It teaches the basic principles for a successful family, not just for Christians, but for anyone that wants healthy, stong and happy relationships. Very easy to read, with questions to think about at the end of each chapter. Great for book studies. Wonderful references from scripture that apply to our daily lives. Lovingly written from the hearts of two women who understand the importance of giving a solid foundation to our children and in turn the family.

Book Description
Can the educated women of the 1990s have both a career and a fulfilling personal life? This book traces the history of women's responses to changes in education, employment, reproductive science and law since the 1890s. Increased work and education opportunities and knowledge of contraception meant choice about when, and indeed whether, to marry and have children. The author utilizes social and government history, autobiography and statistical analysis. This incisive interdisciplinary book will find broad appeal.
Book Description
The results, conclusions and claims of science are often taken to be reliable because they arise from the use of a distinctive method. Yet today, there is widespread skepticism as to whether we can validly talk of method in modern science. This outstanding survey explains how this controversy has developed since the 17th century, and explores its philosophical basis.
Customer Reviews:
Solid presentation.......2002-03-30
Gower's survey begins with Galileo and ends with Carnap. In between, he covers a number of prominent scientists - the ones you expect, like Bacon and Newton; and a few you don't, like John Maynard Keynes. He has grouped his subjects according to the nature of their contribution, which means that this reads as the series of essays that it is. Each essay is separately referenced.
There are a few odd omissions, like Descartes (who is nonethless mentioned in passing). But the net result is that, instead of being presented with the historical panorama, one is confronted with a series of ideas - and how they fit into the overall understanding of contemporaries.
