A Skin of Shingles.......2000-09-03
An historical treasure, this book, The Shingle and the Stick Style: form Richardson to the Orgins of Wright, by Vincent Scully is a chest of Architectual masterpieces. Detailed descriptions, interior and exterior photos, and floor plans make this book a wealth of knowledge for anyone interested in Architecture. The book is laid out as most contempory Architecture books. It describes the perticular building, then has the number that corralates to the photo. There are so many historical photographs in this book, and it is all well explained. It takes you step though step from the beginning of the stick stlye to the evoloution to the shingle to the metamorphis of Wright. Ths book is so detailed it even has the architectual sketches of many houses build in Manchester-by-the-Sea at Cape Ann, Mass. For the price this book is a definate buy!

Right book at the right time.......2005-08-03
Clear and to-the-point visual beauty of a book especially for those of us who have a domain name that has been sitting unused for 2 years! Well-organized, even for right-brain folks, it explains WHY you need to use the web as a promotion tool, in addition to all the other self-promotion activities, and HOW to create a streamlined presentation. If you need the nitties and gritties of HTML, go elsewhere; this book is about the big picture, to get you going in the right direction.
Awesome book.......2004-08-12
I read this book in about an hour. It was an incredible eye opening experience. Its well written and to the point. I've been a madison ave ad exec for 17 years and this was definately worth every penny. I received my copy one day after i ordered it and it was personnely signed from the author. If you have a web site you need this book.
An important book!.......2003-06-14
Careful use of the new technology is an important part of all good marketing plans, and this books shows how to do it. Self-promotion, using every media outlet available is critical to success. And don't be afraid of the of using "self" and "promotion" in the same breath! If we want people to value our skills, we must first show that we value ourselves -- by making sure our accomplishments are visible to targeted audiences. If we want people to buy our services, they have to know who we are, what we have accomplished and why they should do business with us! The first step is to develop a "personal publicity plan," a step-by-step process that will help even the most timid become comfortable with the concept of self-promotion.
Recommended Read.......2003-04-25
"Self-Promotion Online" delivers exactly what the title promises; a full marketing plan for self-promotion via the Internet. The first section starts with a chapter on creating an effective website although you might want to get her other book "Designing Websites" for much more thorough coverage of this area. The rest of the first section covers using the web as an online portfolio and using the website as a showcase for your business.
She does a very commendable job of covering the bane of every Internet user - using e-mail to market without engaging in spam. She also covers items like using strategic linking and doing marketing research online and finishes the book with three different strategies and to-do lists.
Almost every page has full color illustrations and examples to clearly illustrate the concepts presented in the text. The book covers all the most important points of using the Internet to promote your business/self and is a recommended purchase.
Colorful and Easy To Read, Great For Beginners.......2002-04-14
This book is great for those beginning to learn how to promote themselves and their services. It didn't have any information that I didn't already know about, but if you really look at the examples you can get some good ideas. This book is very basic and to the point. You might want to flip through the actual book before deciding if it's really for you.
Book Description
From 1948 to 1976 Ansel Adams produced seven portfolios, each a limited edition of 10 to 15 signed photographic prints. This book reproduces all 90 of these superb images, including many of Adamss most famous monumental landscape photographs and some remarkable, less familiar portraits and architectural studies. The Portfolios of Ansel Adams was first published in 1977. In 1981 it was decided to take advantage of new printing technology and also to have the book redesigned. In this new printing, the typography from the introductory texts of the original portfolios was faithfully reproduced. In addition, new laser-scanned separations were made of all the images to guarantee the best possible reproduction of the photographs. In his eloquent introduction, John Szarkowski observes that of all Adams publications, his portfolios most clearly represent his personal view of the meaning of his work.
Customer Reviews:
A great collection of images.......2005-11-23
This book is a compilation of images that Ansel compiled into portfolios, along with a brief introduction by the author. Some of these images can be found in other compilations, but are more powerful here because they are grouped as Ansel chose to group them. Each of his portfolios is well printed, for a book printing of a silver image that is, and his statement is included for each, just as in the actual editions. Overall, this is a nice compilation of images, and an opportunity to see them grouped as the photographer felt they should be. There are few enough words, with the major focus being on the main subject, his images. This is a great addition to the library of any Adams fan, but is not an indispensable tome.
excellent!.......2000-06-13

Book Description
For eight terrifying days in March, while Baghdad was ablaze with bombs, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Matt McAllester and four other Westerners were imprisoned in Abu Ghraib, the most horrific prison in the Middle East. Crashing from his adrenaline-filled days of reporting the war from the streets of Baghdad and the roof of the Palestine Hotel, McAllester quickly found himself sleeping on a dirty blanket and scrounging cigarettes from guards who had just beaten other prisoners senseless. He ceased being a reporter and became the same as thousands of other innocent Iraqi civilians whose lives had come to an abrupt and violent halt when the MukhabaratSaddam's secret police -- came knocking.
But this is not just a book about a private trauma. McAllester also brings his unsurpassed perspective to bear on the stories and struggles of ordinary people in the brutal world of Iraq under Saddam -- the violence, the paranoia, the endless cycle of repression. In vivid and evocative prose, and illustrated with the powerful photographs of his Newsday coworker and prison mate Moises Saman, he examines Iraq before, during, and after the war, often exposing truths previously hidden by the regime's relentless censorship and obfuscation.
From the excavation of the mass graves in Muhawil to the aspirations of Iraq's first English-language boy band, McAllester explores the reality of living a life paralyzed by fear and punctuated by hope. He describes what it is like to be a torturer and also the tortured. And, finally, he writes painfully of his return to Abu Ghraib and his meetings with men who spent years, not days, inside its walls, and of his obsessive quest to find his interrogator and to turn the tables on him.
As the Western world grapples with the daunting task of helping Iraq to repair itself, we are faced most of all by our lack of understanding of what exactly it is we are trying to fix. Blinded by the Sunlight gives a rare and honest insight into Saddam's terrifying kingdom, from one of the few Westerners who know firsthand what lay behind the facade.
Customer Reviews:
It's about Saddam and the Terror-land he ruled over!.......2004-09-04
This novel answers the question, "What do Iraqis think about Saddam, their government, and their country."
Matthew McAllester shares conversations with Iraqi civilians who lived under Saddam's rule since 1979. This book provides a glimpse of what the average Iraqi was thinking before, during, and after the war.
McAllester has to be a little crazy to go after a story so dangerous. I'm glad he took the risk, because I believe it makes for a great read. His story backs up the atrocities so many have already reported; Saddam's regime needed to fall. That is so obvious after reading this book.
There are a lot of negative reviews on this book. I have to assume others are not happy with McAllester's interpretation of what he discovered in Iraq. But this is HIS story, not theirs.
Don't get it.......2004-04-15
I went to hear Matthew McAllester speak a couple of months ago in Chicago and I was impressed with his articulateness and was really interested in reading about his personal story. That personal story was barely present in this book and what was there was a jumbled mess. A weird stream of consciousness that will confuse you even if you're well-versed on recent Iraqi history. Did McAllester write this book, or did he just give his assembled notes to some editorial assistant who tried to write a story around them? I wanted to know more about his relationships with the other journalists, with his girlfriend, with his family. The attempt at political analysis is so clearly off-base I can't believe that even the author believes it. I don't get the disparity between the moving talk I heard and the boring mess that this book is. And I recommend that others don't get it at all. Total waste of time and money.
A little praise, where it is due!.......2004-04-13
Contrary to what other reviewers have said about Mr. McAllester's book, I found the resonance of personal trauma against the backdrop of totalitarian regime not only insightful, but also frighteningly similar to other scenarios from around the globe (the South African and Chilean situations come immediately to mind). While I was moved by the personal story, I was edified by the greater context against which his trauma occurred. And given the recent situation in the United States (Homeland Security, anyone?) -- also terrifyingly close to home!
a mixed bag.......2004-04-08
this book was a way mixed bag but not meriting some of the praise or the criticism given on this sight. this author does emotions superbly; analysis not so well. perhaps he should have decided earlier what which he wanted this book to be about.
woefully and fatally limited.......2004-04-08
At the centre of this book is an extraordinary tale of how a bunch of journalists got chucked into jail at the peak of the war. As a story that should have sufficed. It is genuinely fascinating in a way that makes you thing, what would I have done
in that situation? Why the author felt the need to stretch that out into a generalisation of the saddam regime, I don't get. Everyone he encounters has a story that dwarfs his entirely and thus robs his own voice of meaning. The sense you get is that he is only interest in iraqis for the way in which they can augment his own theorum and experiences. Their post war suffering goes entirely undocumented. this book is neither one thing nor another, not an account of the war or an analysis of the aftermath. It reads like an opportunity that could have been grasped but wasn't and therefore can tell us nothing enduring of the plight of the iraqi people. At worst, an ego trip; at best, a very limited view on one journalist's very limited world.

Book Description
Jim and Yvonne Claypole have recently returned from a truly remarkable year in Antarctica where they lived in a tiny hut chained to rocks in one of the coldest and most isolated spots on earth.
?
Before their year of living with extreme cold, horrendous blizzards and diminishing daylight began they found that they had captivated the interest of the Australian media and had a huge following. Despite the isolation, technology enabled them to receive e-mails from thousands of well wishers, many of whom were readers hooked to Yvonne's hugely popular articles in a weekly Australian magazine.
?
Everyone was fascinated by her descriptions of their lives in tiny Gadget Hut and the way that they tackled the problems of day-to-day living on the frozen continent.

Just Another Revisionist Sour Portrait.......2007-04-06
I find it funny and irksome to read the writings of these armchair kings and generals calling themselves "scholars" sitting on some moral high horse they erect for themselves. I'm just curious what they get out of it. Worthington is certainly a noteworthy scholar with great credentials, but why he sits in his den or office and think he could apply the morals of today to those of some 2500 years ago is not something I could fathom. Clearly, there is an agenda of some sort that belie the thoroughly researched materials.
The book is certainly well-written and it's obvious that Worthington knows his stuff, but his obvious undisguised bias towards the negative over the positive gets a little old. It's so easy to exaggerate the negative (which we ALL have) into something monstrous and totally unsavory. This is exactly what Worthington does time and time again, selectively citing sources or leaving them out to make his point as some sort of prosecutor/judge.
I've read many books about Alexander by noted historians and scholars and they do indeed run the gamut from gushing positivity to dark sourpuss vitriol like this book by Worthington. It's fascinating that Alexander means so many different things to different people - kind of like the German opera composer Wagner. The thing about Alexander is that - no matter what - he'll be studied, admired, revered, reviled, debated over for many millennias to come (assuming mankind survives that long), long after irrelevant books like these have disappeared...
Surprisingly good.......2005-02-10
This book is a wonderful chronical both of Alexander the Great's life and conquests. It's primary strength is in the amount of sheer details of Alexander's conquests, his social programs, etc. By reading this book you'll get an excellent understanding of the politics during his time, the practical difficulties that Alexander had conquering such vast regions, and the various ramifications of Alexander's decisions.
However, this book does go a bit politically correct when it gets into the issue of whether Alexander the Great should be called "the great" or "the accursed" (which btw the Iranians seem prefer...seems they haven't gotten over Alexander ending their golden age). Although, to be fair the author does lay out a good case for relabeling Alexander "the accursed"...or at least acknowledging that his legacy was mixed.
This book does an excellent job imparting a comprehensive understanding of Alexander the great, his life and his effect on history, etc. You even learn enough to see how thing could have gone differently (if Alexander had an obvious heir when died, if he accepted the proposal of Darius to accept all land west of the Euphrates, if he had lived longer and conquered Arabia and Carthage which he was planning on doing).
