I ordered this book after first glance at it in my North Light catalog this month! I have just touched the surface on admiring the first few works of art in the book and am so impressed with the artist's expert use of color, technique and eye for beauty. I look forward to exploring the book in depth and trying some of the demonstrations. This is a wow book, very inspiring and uplifting, one every artist should have for reference! Strong evidence of the seductive power of the establishment press is that few folks who've worked in it at a level of real responsibility ever leave, much less leave to become press critics. A notable exception is Ben Bagdikian, who after rising through the ranks of several papers to become assistant managing editor of the Washington Post chucked it all to become a journalism professor. While in that job he produced a trenchant, prescient book about the rise of the media conglomerate, The Media Monopoly. Double Vision, as the title suggests, is really two projects: one, an autobiography; the other, the updating of Bagdikian's take on various journalistic behaviors and problems. Both agendas work because Bagdikian has had an interesting life and continues to have interesting ideas. So in this book we are entertained by tales of the Army Air Corps in World War II and of working on the Pentagon Papers, and are instructed by a cogent critique of the way the big papers (don't) cover big business.

A Journey of Discovery.......2004-11-10

Desnoyers' A Journey to the East is a fascinating time capsule of a book. Li Gui's account of his trip to the 1876 Phillie Exposition captures an outsiders view of a time and place that we are all now outsiders to. His attempts to make American and European ideas and experiences understandable to his stay-at-home Chinese readers gives us a refreshing look at our own technology and culture as it was becoming what is now the "modern world." I found his surprise at the widespread use of female workers mirroring my own surprise. And I was stunned by the amazing access he had on his trip to politicians and captains of industry. He was completely unphazed by meeting presidents and New York's Mayor, but I suppose if one has an Emperor, even NY's mayor is small potatoes. His concern and care for his countrymen in American is apparant and gives an interesting look at how foreign workers were assimilating into our melting pot. Even Li Gui's little jokes and homilies were endearing. All in all, a very intersting and surprisable readable look into another time.
Desnoyers' introduction is in many ways the meat and potaotes of the volume, especially if Chinese history isn't your field. He very ably distills out and encapsulates enough of the times and conditions of Li Gui's life to give you the picture of the man and the place in history he represents. This is invaluable in understanding how Li Gui was experiencing the wonders he saw and what he was trying to accomplish by writing his account as a travelogue for the large, xenophobic audiance back home. For all his discriptions of the wonders abroad he wanted his Chinese readers to see that people everywhere were not that different from the people back home.

Small volume without much detail.......2007-07-30

Apparently the author spent as much time thinking up a catchy title as writing the book which is very narrow and provides only tiny summaries of many of the commanders. It holds some interest as a reference.

Nice addition to any Civil War library.......2006-06-02

Any Civil War buff would want to add this book to their collection. Patterson mainly follows the West Point grads who served with Lee in the Army of Northern Virginia. In doing so, that kind of makes the title misleading since this only covers less than half of the 306. At any rate, though, the book is valuable in discussing the rifts that grew up between the West Point grads and the non-professinal soldiers. Further, it discusses how pre-war friendships and animosities carried over into the war years. Possibly the most interesting chapter, though, is the final chapter about the fighting amongst each other that occurred, espeically over the Gettysburg Campaign, and how non-professional soldiers actually fared better socially and economically after the war than the West Pointers. Another interesting facet of the final chapter is how some non-professional soldiers blamed the West Pointers for the Confederacy's loss, saying that the professional soldiers were too interested in their image and not the cause. Most Civil War buffs probably won't learn a whole lot of new stuff because of the book being so short, but a fast paced, interesting, well written read just the same.

Politics, war and friendships.......2003-08-16

In Rebels from West Point, Gerard A. Patterson has compiled information on some of the more intersting figures, as well as careers, in the War Between the States. Some mention has been made in larger works, including the movie Gettysburg, about the relationships between men from both sides of the conflict, but this work covers them all, albeit in small bits sometimes.

In this work, however, the conflict between West Pointers and non-professional officers is more clearly covered. From the beginning, the "newcomers" felt looked down upon by their more rigorously trained compatriots. Here, we find this attitude contributing to one of the least known aspects of the war: the professional competition among officers in both armies, and in all grades. Sometimes these attitudes took precedence over conducting the war in a professional manner.

There is also some coverage of the conflicts that rose up after the war -- and particularly after the death of R.E. Lee -- over who was to blame for losing the war. James Longstreet was particularly vilified over his conduct at Gettysburg and later over his friendship with U.S. Grant and membership in the Republican Party. Such things provided fuel for men who were still trying to promote themselves, sometimes beyond their capabilities.

This book is a nice addition to any collection on the Civil War and would be particularly complementary to the biographies and autobiographies which are available in abundance.

The author re-examines the life of the Scottish hero whose flawed character and a lack of success in love influenced his relations with the Royal courts of Europe and played an important part in his role in the history of Scotland and England -- perhaps contributing as much to the defeat of the Jacobite cause as "Butcher" Cumberland's musket fire at Culloden. As well as the torrid affair with the young Duchesse de Montbazon in Paris and the tragic tale of Celmentine Walkinshaw, which resulted in a child, the author looks at the Prince's other relationships with women, from the formative on with his mother, to his disastrous late dynastic marriage to Louise de Stolberg, in which he was left a lonely, elderly cuckold.

Appalling.......2003-09-27

I only finished this book through my own interest in its subject. Its appalling writing - which could have come right out of a school essay by a not particularly good student - should be enough to discourage any reader, but to that there must be added a serious lack of real scholarship, and a complete carelessness and naiveté in jumping to conclusions (whether these be about factual, psychological or historical issues), which became more and more vexing as I plodded through the book.

As if this weren't enough, there are contradictions galore, even in regard to the author's own opinions. For example, Mr. Douglas asserts, on page 170, that "Charles Stuart in love might consider himself a prince, but he certainly was no gentleman". An unremarkable comment in itself, if it weren't for the fact that later on, on page 285, the author tells us that "as a lover, Prince Charlie could be a gentleman, but a gentleman with a sinister, dark side" (???).

There is at least one blatant error of grammatical interpretation, as when, on the first line of page 263, Mr. Douglas explains the word "anyways" as meaning "anyone's", which certainly cannot be the word's meaning on line 7 of the same page. My opinion is that the word means simply "in any way", but that's not the explanation given in the book (wouldn't it have been easier to leave it unexplained, rather than adding that embarrassing little clarification in brackets?).

All in all, a disappointment, and a complete waste of money. I only hope there are better books on Prince Charlie around!!!
