4 out of 5 stars Excellent book for stair enthusiasts/history buffs........2005-02-06

Personally, I think this is the Mother of All stairbuilding books. It will NOT turn anyone into a stairbuilder. It is a classic historical reference, with terminology consistent with its time. It is one of the first books to take a stab at comprehensively describing the accumulated knowledge and methods applicable to this craft at the time of publication. Is it an easy read? No. Is it worth it? Yes, if you are a serious craftsman. Regardless, if you are a woodworker, particularly a stairbuilder, you are not complete without a copy of this book on your shelf.

The most applicable knowledge for the money? A Simplified Guide - G. di Cristina

3 out of 5 stars A conversation piece.......2003-10-03

As a stairbuilder and professional woodworker, I really would love to own a copy of the original English edition. This re-print is a service to all of us who enjoy old or antique books on the traditional crafts. The illustrations are fascinating

Granted, any book attempting to explore tangent handrailing is an advanced text written for the architectural woodworker with some grounding in stairbuilding, however, if you are intent on learning classical handrailing in solid wood, Mowatt is pretty useless. George DiChristina's "A Simplified Guide to Custom Stairbuilding and Handrailing" is a far better choice. It is well organized, and about as clear a manual for the craft as one could hope for.

2 out of 5 stars Table of contents don't say it all.......2002-03-19

This is a very old book, written in 1900. It's table of contents list circular staircases as one of the items discussed in the book. However, it gives you virtually no info on constructing such a staircase.

4 out of 5 stars good buy .......2007-06-10

I bought this and h How to Draw Manga Volume 2 Compiling Techniques (How to Draw Manga). But i used This book way more than the other one.
Its got a very nice Creating Characters section and a Expressions one. And creating a Story.

2 out of 5 stars It's an okay book.......2006-04-25

I remember this book well because it was the very first "How To Draw Manga" book that I purchased. IMO I think some things might be a bit confusing because some of the translating wasn't the best. I also wouldn't reccomend this book for kids because some of it was a bit innapropriate. As far as learning goes...it was okay. I'd still reccommend another book to someone that is a total beginner in drawing manga. I know I was able to learn more when I purchased a book that was more strait to the point and had very clear directions.

4 out of 5 stars Great intro .......2006-03-23

Most people will just think that this book will teach you how to draw, in essence it goes further explaining the work putting together the whole Manga. It had my attention from the first moment that I picked it up. This'll let you get a good feel for every section without all the fluff. All that I found out I have to apply it but I'm having a hard time a dedicated manga supply store...... I wish that HTDM would include individual supplies on their website.

4 out of 5 stars Looking for help?.......2005-08-05

Looking for help? Want to go beyond the beginner stage but not ready for tones and the like? Well then this book is perfect! I would reccomend this book for those who are past the beginner stage since the book doesnt go too indepth in certain areas, so it Isnt perfect for nooobs.this book will teach youhow to express emotions, ages, the facial differences between genders and more. it is devided into:
Chap. 1: drawing the face, this chapter is self-explanatory, yet I wish it delved more deeply into its subject, so this was the runt of the chapters when it comes to Quality.
Chap.2 : drawing the body, Quite handy, it goes into Drawing the body as blocks (though personally I like the way I draw my blocks, but to each his/her own), deformation, proportions (shouldnt proportions have been at the front of thr Chapter?), hand and feet (brilliant!!) and more.
Chap. 3: drawing characters, The best section in the book, it shows you how eyes ,clothing and surroundings add to 1st impresssions and the step to creating characters and storys. i can find a few minor complaints, thought the worst was the translation, it could have been better (they mistranslated right to left!)But it is still comprehendable.happy reading

2 out of 5 stars Not much for the price.......2005-07-06

I bought this book from here on Amazon about a year ago. Since then I have rarely used it except for a few times for refrences if Im not able to get online at the time. It has some helpful information but for the price it isnt really worth it since you can find EVERYTHING in that book online for free. The first half of the book just goes through the types of pens and ink you should use and the life of a manga artist etc. Then it finally gets to the good stuff but it barely touches anything before moving to the next subject. And the part I was mostly upset with was the hair section. It shows you how to draw hair flowing and such but thats it. Does not give tips how to draw hair at all. So basically, the only reason you should by this book is if you want to waist money for something you will probably only end up using for quick reffrinces. There are better books out there for that... like an actual Manga comic or something. Or a gallery book from your favorite anime show.

If you want to learn the basics of drawing manga, this book is useless and I can save you money right now. Just visit BakaNeko, PolyKarbon, MangaTutorials websites or Julie Dillons tutorial located on the [...] website. Everything you need is on those sites and all contain more info than this book.

There are some other good How to Draw Manga books out there when you wanna start honing on a certain area but this isnt one of them. Save some money and visit one of the above manga sites or go purchase on of the other How to Draw Manga books that are spicificly for what you wish to get better in.

    Book Description

Vicki Goldberg, one of the leading voices in the field of photography criticism, is well known for her cogent and perceptive writing, which is regularly featured in such national publications as the New York Times, American Photographer, and Vanity Fair. Aperture’s Vicki Goldberg: Light Matters gathers for the first time a selection of this remarkable author’s essays and criticism, culled from her writings published over the past twenty-five years.

Goldberg’s take on photography is both insightful and encompassing: her subjects range from pop imagery to war journalism, from photo-booth portraits to manipulated digital imagery, from the “boredom” of voyeurism to the great preponderance of tragic photographs in the news. She brings new light to the work of the medium’s “old masters,” among them Walker Evans, Lotte Jacobi, and Lartigue, writing with equal acuity about contemporary trailblazers such as Bill Viola, Daido Moriyama, and Bastienne Schmidt. Goldberg also tackles provocative larger issues facing the medium, such as the potentially “transgressive” nature of photographs, and the camera’s powerful role in a culture of commodification.

Dismissing clichés and deftly negotiating the many diverging paths photography now follows, Goldberg demonstrates how to consider not just photographic images themselves, but their impact, and the meaning of that impact. Vicki Goldberg: Light Matters showcases a writer of great intelligence, wit, and insight, whose understanding of this multifarious and evolving medium is unsurpassed. Vicki Goldberg is the author of The Power of Photography: How Photographs Changed Our Lives (1991), and editor of Photography in Print: Writings from 1816 to the Present (1981). In 1997 she was the recipient of the International Center of Photography’s prestigious Infinity Award. Goldberg writes on photography and the arts for the New York Times, Vanity Fair, American Photo0 , and other publications.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars YAY!!!.......2003-03-06

oooh, me likes, me likes and wants more!!! Yes, it is quite wonderful to see beautiful classics like this come from Japan. This is some serious old school manga from the seventies, back when the characters' eyes defied logic with sparkles!! I mean, these people have got some humongous, glittery eyes, and a whole lotta hair. In other words, the art is gorgeous. Plus, at the same time its got this creepy feel to it and each story plays out as an individual horror story that links together into one tragic and exciting tale.

The story is about a girl named Minako. A demon has showed up out of nowhere claiming that she is his bride. It turns out this demon has been searching for the reincarnation of his long lost love, and they are mythological beings that were forsaken by the gods. Apparently, the two lovers had been twins, brother and sister, and as punishment for their sins, the brother was turned into a demon and the sister was sent to the world of the dead where her body is slowly rotting away. Which leads us back to the main character Minako who is the sister's reincarnation, and the only way to bring his sister back is to kill Minako and give her body in place of his sister's rotting one. So now the demon, Deimos has a bit of a dilemna because in order to be with either his sister or Minako, one will have to be sacrificed (well in in his sister's case, she will just continue to rot away if he doesn't hurry and help her).

So anyway, this is a cool story and I enjoyed all the japanese fork lore added into the chapters in addition to the whole thing between Minako and the twins. This being such an old manga, you can see where many newer popular mangas may have gotten their ideas. The forbidden love between brother and sister and the troubles that resulted made me immediately think of Angel Sanctuary. In addition, the idea of choosing between your original love or your love's reincarnation who is so similar yet so different reminded me of Inu Yasha and the love triangle between the hot headed dog demon, Kagome, and Kikyou. Yes, all good series that should be checked out... but I digress. Anyway, please read this series and enjoy! :D

5 out of 5 stars Shoujo horror at it's finest!.......2003-02-09

It's wonderful to see classic shoujo manga stories like this being published in the USA! The main story develops slowly throughout this many volume series and is tucked away - hidden like a mystery - within the short horror stories collected in each manga volume. The artwork is amazing and beautiful, but like other older shoujo series from the 70s being released in the USA now (Banana Fish, etc.), it develops and gets better with each volume. In many ways it started the whole shoujo horror craze and the storytelling style - of telling the main story within a collection of short stories - can be seen in other shoujo manga and anime horror series like "Tokyo Babylon" and "Vampire Miyu". And if you enjoyed the subtle horror of "Tokyo Babylon" and "Vampire Miyu", you should also enjoy this classic gothic horror series, the "Bride of Deimos".

    2 out of 5 stars Mmmmmmmmm.............2003-01-26

I picked this book up and read the back of it and it sounded great, but considering I had never really heard anything about it I was kind of sketchy, but I put the investment in it and bought it anyway(it was only [$$]). The story overall is very jumpy and it almost feels like I'm reading a lot of filler chapters just to get piece by piece of the plot of the story. It moved kind of slow and the artwork is kind of rough. The artist draws the female of the story well, but the other characters didn't get as much as the nicer treatment she did, but let me briefly tell you what the story is supposed to be about. Long ago there was a brother and a sister(they are supposed to be like some Greek gods) that fell in love which each other, the almighty god(Jupiter) ashamed and mortified of that love turned the brother into a demon and trapped the sister in her grave at the bottom of the ocean, the sister then tells her brother to find her "reincarnation" and bring her back to life with this girl so that they could be back together again. That's where the heroine of the story comes in. Venus(the happy go luck school girl) starts having dreams and then starts seeing Deimos(who is the shunned brother), so this is where the jumping starts, either the author starts explaining things too fast so that it's too rushed or they don't say anything at all, and your just confused, but I did decide this. I will buy the second volume just to see if the story gets better. I know that some manga artists and authors sometimes had rough spots with their early works but had progressed a lot as the story continued. So I would say that if you might be looking for something to fill in the boring minutes of the day you might want to take a look at this story, I do believe in second chances and will wait for the second novel...so I guess when it comes out I will have to write a review on that one!! :)

    Book Description

The delirious pursuit of love is a search that inevitably takes us all both down the well-beaten path and into new, uncharted territory. In this collection of thirty-three heart-tugging and hilarious essays, celebrated Electronic Urban Report columnist Steven Ivory chronicles his lifelong quest for that thing we all crave: The Meaningful Relationship.

The journey begins with his first love -- his mother -- before making an amusing pilgrimage through lust-filled adolescent affections, an awkward introduction to sex, and a series of poignant and funny adventures of unrequited love, bungled blind dates, and the Ones That Got Away.

Propelled by a wit rivaled only by a willingness to bare his soul, Ivory's revelations on kissing, game-playing, sexual satisfaction, and personal insecurities culminate in a startling, life-altering discovery that touches your funny bone as well as your heart.

    5 out of 5 stars Outrageous!.......2006-03-06

I love this book! If you're a fool in love and searching for Mr/Mrs Right, this book will do it for you. Read it, I'll betcha you enjoy it! It's funny, witty and romantic and it will give you some interesting ideals for your next date!

    4 out of 5 stars Funny & Nostalgic.......2006-02-17

I didn't want to put this book down! I appreciate the nostalgia found in Mr. Ivory's descriptive childhood stories. Each about his mother and friends were particularly endearing.
I expected his adult romantic recollections to be graphic, but was pleased that he was able to convey his memories without the use of totally explicit language. At times, however, I needed to skim a paragraph to avoid feeling uncomfortable. I recommend this book for it's humor and good-natured stories, but would discourage anyone offended by occasional explicit language.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2005-09-21

Admittedly I'm a Steven Ivory fan. I've read his column in Electronic Urban Report from the beginning. This book exceeded even my expectations and leaves me looking forward to the next one......

    5 out of 5 stars Soul Food!.......2004-09-08

Steven Ivory took me on a journey that satisfied my hunger for intellect and served me humor for dessert! What a joy to read such an honest and poignant work on love and relationships from the male point of view. A secret window through which to gaze upon the masculine spirit, Ivory offers a rare treasure for a women everywhere; as well as a "What, you too?!" for the men. Write on my brother, write on.

    5 out of 5 stars What a Birthday Gift!.......2004-07-15

My husband gave me this thing for my birthday and I have to say it is one of the best gifts he ever gave me. I have always been a Steve Ivory fan. I read his weekly column every week on the EUR website. However, recently, I had a bad experience with laser eye surgery and I haven't been able to see clearly let alone read for the past four months. My doctor gave me the okay to read again after my last visit and Mr. Ivory's Fool in Love was just what a girl needed to welcome sight back in her life. I love this book, it is so funny, and every story is about him, something he should write about more in his weekly column.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, "Penis Gourds and Moscow Muggings, " and I look forward to more of the same. Written in a style reminiscient of Richard Feynman's "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!", the stories reveal a certain insatiable curiosity
about the world and a desire to bridge the gaps (and occasional chasms) which separates one culture from another. The photographs are, of course, first rate.

Maybe it will get the creative juices flowing enough to give you your own techniques for getting your kids to listen and DO what you ask.

    3 out of 5 stars Marine Review.......2007-08-07

I generally don't give negative reviews, but overall, I was disappointed. First, the book is written in Military "Class Outline" format, (and yes I knew this buying the book, and yes I was a Marine Corps Combat Instructor and VERY familiar with these type of outlines), but this means that almost half of the written content has nothing to do with accual useable information but about "instructor prompts" such as gaining attension of the class and how to motivate them to learn the material. The BIGGEST FLAW is that the book constantly references charts and slides (TP#1, TA#6 etc...) but DOESN'T INCLUDE THEM IN THE BOOK! It appears very DATED, if you are at all familiar with older military printouts, this is still one. I hope they (USMC SS School) have updated thier outlines, in look if not for material. If you looking for indidual skills you'll LEARN more just studing a Data Book or reading on line, but then the little info it does include I learned in basic Infantry school and am presuming if you are studing this type of material you already know most of it. For example, total amount of info on "Gillie Suit"; about one paragraph basicly saying to use one. If you are looking into weather or not to employ military snipers, or gain a basic knowledge of thier use in various operations, it may be interesting. Good Luck and Be safe.

4 out of 5 stars Clarifies Raphael Lemkin on the Genocide of Poles and Other Non-Jews.......2006-09-07

There are many perspectives presented in this anthology, and this review is necessarily confined to some of them. The Judeocentric dominance of the subject of genocide is striking, as pointed out by Richard L. Rubenstein: "Although there have been thousands of books written about the destruction of the European Jews, few have been devoted to the more general problem of genocide per se."(p. 283). And Rubenstein wrote those words now 20 years ago!

Much has been made of the widespread admiration of Hitler before WWII, but German Jews also engaged in this: "Their loyalty was shown even after Hitler came to power in 1933. One example: the Riechsbund judischer Frontsoldater (National Association of Jewish War Veterans) hailed the advent of Hitler in 1933 and publicly promised support of his government. (They soon changed their minds)."(Robert G. L. Waite, p. 165).

Against the tacit supposition that Jews were never rivals of the Germans, Barbara Harff remarks: "If Jews in Germany were at all special as a group they were so because of achievements in the professions. A disproportionate number of them were doctors, scientists, literary greats, and artists. Leading lights of Marxism/Socialism included many Jews, e. g., Karl Marx, Rosa Luxembourg, Ferdinand Lasalle, and Eduard Bernstein...The successful merchant image of the Jews spelled competition for the average shopkeeper in Germany; the dominance of Jewish scientists may have caused envy among their colleagues; legendary Jewish international finance connections added to the image resented by others. The liberal image of artists residing in the capital did nothing to persuade the provincial German that the Jew was part of their world."(p. 51).

Against the belief that there is some sort of incongruity between the assimilated status of Jews and the persistence of anti-Semitism, Walter P. Zenner comments: "It should also be pointed out that those who were most integrated into society, whether in Poland or Germany, often competed most directly with members of the majority ethnic group. It was the German-speaking or Polish-speaking Jew who sought to enter the university, become a professional or civil servant, or pursue success as an artist. When positions of this kind are limited, competition is often intense."(p. 273). What Zenner does not mention is the fact that Poland, unlike Germany, had a much larger relative Jewish population and was poverty-stricken. Yet genocide against Jews originated in Germany, not Poland.

Alan Rosenberg (pp. 145-161) addresses the question of the uniqueness of the Holocaust. To some, the Holocaust was unique only in the trivial sense that every historical event is unique. To others it was the unprecedented attempted murder of every single member of a specific group. Still others (p. 147) felt that the stress on the uniqueness of Jewish deaths created unnecessary divisions between groups that experienced mass murder. Along the same vein, Irving Louis Horowitz comments: "The difficulty with this exclusivist formula is that while Jews were singled out, so too were Gypsies, Poles, and Slavs."(p. 70).

Yehuda Bauer has accused Raphael Lemkin of being internally inconsistent in his conception of genocide. Actually, as pointed out by Alan Rosenberg, Yehuda Bauer has distorted Lemkin's position: "[Bauer]...argued that Lemkin's `definition of genocide' `contains a contradiction', for if it is total annihilation that is intended it makes `no sense' for Lemkin to talk about such methods as `interfering with the activities of the church', or the `debasement' of morality through dissemination of pornography and the encouragement of alcoholic consumption. The fact of the matter is that Lemkin mentions such factors as these as constituent elements of planned total destruction because he recognized that such planning `does not necessarily mean the immediate destruction of a nation.'...It is clear that the elements that `make no sense' to Bauer in Lemkin's description of genocidal techniques are all part of the `coordinate plan' to weaken `the essential foundations' of various groups with the long-run aim of annihilating the groups themselves."(pp. 160-161). Furthermore, "Bauer does not appear to recognize that Lemkin himself was fully satisfied that the Nazi policy of genocidal destruction was aimed at total annihilation, whether directed at the Jews or at the Czechs or the Poles."(p. 155).

Elsewhere, David Engel has suggested that the Polish government in exile mentioned the fate of the Jews primarily because of prodding by Jewish groups. However, Engel's argument is weakened by the fact that Jews at the time possessed relatively little political clout: "International sympathy for Jews was virtually nonexistent, evidenced by the refusal of other countries to grant entry permits to fleeing Jews."(Barbara Harff, p. 50).

In his recent books, NEIGHBORS and FEAR, Jan Thomas Gross has argued that Jewish Communism (the Zydokomuna) was irrelevant to Polish-Jewish tensions. Walter P. Zenner would have disagreed: "But why has anti-Semitism been so potent in postwar Poland, where the numerical decline of Jews was even more precipitous? Ideological anti-Semitism was much more of a force in Poland during the twentieth century, and Jews were prominent in the ruling Communist elite during the early phases of post-World War II Poland..." (p. 279).

Robert G. L. Waite recounts Milgram's much-quoted experiments (p. 172). But left unanswered is the question why, if it is so easy to get ordinary, decent people to torture their colleagues at the behest of authority figures, such unspeakably barbaric events as genocide had not been much more common in human history. The constant citing of Milgram sounds suspiciously like an attempt to whitewash the Germans by implying that the Holocaust could have just as easily have taken place anywhere else--it just happened to occur in 20th-century Germany.

Richard L. Rubenstein (p. 292) repeats the false claim that Christian theology considers Jews to be demonic. In actuality, Christianity taught that Jews were human sinners who had rejected Jesus the Messiah, but who could nevertheless repent and get right with God.

      Book Description

Wagman offers a critical analysis of current theory and research in the psychological and computational sciences, directed toward the elucidation of scientific discovery processes and structures. It discusses human scientific discovery processes, analyzes computer scientific discovery processes, and makes a comparative evaluation of the two. This work examines the scientific reasoning of the discoverers of the inhibition mechanism of gene control; scientific discovery heuristics used at different developmental levels; artificial intelligence and mathematical discovery; the ECHO system; the evolution of artificial intelligence discovery systems; the PAULI system; and the KEKADA system. It concludes with an examination of the extent to which computational discovery systems can emulate a set of 10 types of scientific problems.
